Indra's Sacrifice and the Sages' Dispute over Offerings
Janamejaya asks why the mongoose scorned Yudhishthira's sacrifice when sacrifice seems to bring the highest fruit. Vaishampayana answers with the story of Indra's sacrifice, where the sages objected to the slaughter of animals and the dispute ended when King Vasu gave a false ruling and sank into the nether world. He teaches that gifts from wealth wrongly gained bring no merit, while small gifts lawfully earned and freely given lead to heaven, as they did for Vishvamitra and other kings.
