Krishna Teaches the Fates of the Four Orders
Krishna promises that hearing his teaching destroys sin, and the assembled gods and sages bow in wonder. Yudhishthira asks what becomes of a Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya and Shudra after death. Krishna describes the heaven each reaches by living its own duty and the rank of its next birth, then explains how great merit and great sin overpower the lesser, and why sin should be confessed and dharma kept quiet.

Verse 34 (14.97.34)
तस्माद्धर्मः सदा कार्यो मानुष्यं प्राप्य दुर्लभम् । न हि धर्मानुरक्तानां लोके किंचन दुर्लभम् ॥
tasmāddharmaḥ sadā kāryo mānuṣyaṃ prāpya durlabham | na hi dharmānuraktānāṃ loke kiṃcana durlabham
Therefore dharma must always be practised, since a human birth is hard to obtain; for nothing in the world is hard to gain for those devoted to dharma.

sahajaṃ yadbhavetkarma na tattyājyaṃ hi kenacit | sa eva tasya dharmo hi tena siddhiṃ sa gacchati
The work that is born with a man should not be abandoned by anyone; that is his own dharma, and through it he reaches perfection.

viguṇopi svadharmastu pāpakarma vyapohati | evameva tu dharmopi kṣīyate pāpavardhanāt
Even a duty of one's own that is flawed wipes away sinful acts; in the same way dharma itself is wasted by the growth of sin.

Listen, king, to all of it: a subtle and eternal dharma, most hard to understand, in which great men have foundered.

samatve sati rājendra tayoḥ sukṛtapāpayoḥ | gūhitasya bhavedvṛddhiḥ kīrtitasya bhavetkṣayaḥ
When the two, merit and sin, are equal, O king of kings, the one that is concealed grows and the one that is proclaimed is diminished.
