Krishna on Vain Gifts and the Honour Due to Brahmins

Yudhishthira asks which births, gifts and lives are in vain and how a gift bears fruit through the stages of life. Krishna lists the wrongful recipients and the wrongdoers whose gifts and lives are wasted. He then describes the sattvic, rajasic and tamasic gifts, who consumes each, and the three destinations they lead to, and ends by urging reverence for Brahmins who are devoted to him.

daive śrāddhepi vipraḥ sa niyoktavyo'jugupsayā | jugupsitastu yaḥ śrāddhaṃ dahatyagnirivendhanam

A Brahmin should be engaged without disdain even at a rite for the gods or at a shraddha. One who is despised burns up the shraddha like fire burning fuel.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition proper (vulgate Vaishnava-dharma section); found in Appendix I No. 4, lines 390–391 (printed inline as 14,096.015d@004_0390–0391).

bhārataṃ mānavo dharmo vedāḥ sāṅgāścikitsitam | ājñāsiddhāni catvāri na hantavyāni hetubhiḥ

na brāhmaṇānparīkṣeta daive karmaṇi dharmavit | mahānbhavetparīvādo brāhmaṇānāṃ parīkṣaṇe

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition proper (vulgate Vaishnava-dharma section); found in Appendix I No. 4, lines 394–395 (printed inline as 14,096.015d@004_0394–0395).

brāhmaṇānāṃ parīvādaṃ yaḥ kuryātsa narādhamaḥ | rāsabhānāṃ śunāṃ yoniṃ gacchetpuruṣadūṣakaḥ

The vilest of men who slanders Brahmins goes to the womb of donkeys and dogs, a defiler of men.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition proper (vulgate Vaishnava-dharma section); found in Appendix I No. 4, lines 396–397 (printed inline as 14,096.015d@004_0396–0397).

manyuṃ notpādayetteṣāṃ na cāriṣṭaṃ samācaret | manyupraharaṇā viprā na viprāḥ śastrapāṇayaḥ

One should not provoke their anger or do them any harm. Brahmins have anger for a weapon; they do not carry weapons in their hands.
