Dhritarashtra's Question; Brahma's Hymn to Vishnu

Shaken by his sons' defeats, Dhritarashtra asks Sanjaya why the Pandavas cannot be slain. Sanjaya answers that they win because they fight by dharma while his sons have wronged them and ignored every warning, and recounts how Duryodhana, grieving at nightfall, put the same question to Bhishma. Bhishma, renewing his plea for peace, replies that no one can conquer the Pandavas while the wielder of the Sharnga bow protects them, and begins an ancient tale: on Mount Gandhamadana Brahma saw a blazing celestial car in the sky, praised the Supreme Lord Vasudeva with a long hymn, and begged him to divide himself and be born among men in the line of Yadu to slay the demons and establish dharma.

Verse 1 (6.65.1)

bhayaṃ me sumahajjātaṃ vismayaścaiva sañjaya | śrutvā pāṇḍukumārāṇāṃ karma devaiḥ suduṣkaram

Great fear has arisen in me, Sanjaya, and wonder too, on hearing of the deeds of the sons of Pandu, deeds hard even for the gods to accomplish.

Note on the text: Corrected सुमहञ्जातं → सुमहज्जातं (misprint in Wikisource; ञ्ज for ज्ज in the sandhi सुमहत् + जातं; the critical edition reads sumahaj jātaṃ).

Verse 2 (6.65.2)

putrāṇāṃ ca parābhavaṃ śrutvā sañjaya sarvaśaḥ | cintā me mahatī sūta bhaviṣyati kathaṃ tviti

And hearing, Sanjaya, of the defeat of my sons on every side, a great anxiety has seized me, O Suta: how will it all end?

Note on the text: Corrected पराभावं → पराभवं (misprint in Wikisource; a stray long ā, the noun is पराभव "defeat"; the critical edition reads parābhavaṃ).

Verse 3 (6.65.3)

dhruvaṃ viduravākyāni dhakṣyanti hṛdayaṃ mama | tathā hi dṛśyate sarvaṃ daivayogena sañjaya

Surely Vidura's words will burn my heart, for so, Sanjaya, everything is seen to come about through the working of fate,

Note on the text: तथा (CE yathā) kept as a recension variant.

Verse 4 (6.65.4)

yatra bhīṣmamukhānsarvāñśastrajñānyodhasattamān | pāṇḍavānāmanīkeṣu yodhayanti prahāriṇaḥ

now that, in the ranks of the Pandavas, those hard-striking men fight against all our foremost warriors, masters of weapons, with Bhishma at their head.

Note on the text: सर्वाञ्शस्त्रज्ञान् and अनीकेषु (CE śūrān astrajñān, anīkāni) kept as recension variants.

Verse 5 (6.65.5)

kenāvadhyā mahātmānaḥ pāṇḍuputrā mahābalāḥ | kena dattavarāstāta kiṃ vā jñānaṃ vidanti te

Why can the mighty, great-souled sons of Pandu not be slain? Who has granted them boons, dear Sanjaya, or what knowledge do they possess,

Note on the text: = 6.61.5ab + 5cd; the critical edition's third line (5ef) opens the next verse. From here to verse 30 Wikisource divides the critical edition's three-line verses here into couplets, so its verses run half a verse out of step and the automatic alignment missed them (all of verses 5–13 and 15–30).

Verse 6 (6.65.6)

yena kṣayaṃ na gacchanti divi tārāgaṇā iva | punaḥpunarna mṛṣyāmi hataṃ sainyaṃ tu pāṇḍavaiḥ

by which they suffer no loss, like the hosts of stars in the sky? Again and again I cannot bear that my army is slain by the Pandavas.

Note on the text: = 6.61.5ef + 6.61.6ab (तु for sma).

Verse 7 (6.65.7)

mayyeva daṇḍaḥ patati daivātparamadāruṇaḥ | yathā'vadhyāḥ pāṇḍusutā yathā vadhyāśca me sutāḥ

Upon me alone falls the most dreadful rod of fate. Why is it that the sons of Pandu cannot be slain, and that my sons are being slain?

Note on the text: = 6.61.6cd + 7ab. Corrected वाध्याश्च → वध्याश्च (misprint in Wikisource; a stray long ā makes a non-word against अवध्याः in the same line; the critical edition reads vadhyāś ca).

Verse 8 (6.65.8)

etanme sarvamācakṣva yāthātathyena sañjaya | na hi pāraṃ prapaśyāmi duḥkhasyāsya kathaṃcana

Tell me all this exactly as it is, Sanjaya. For I can see no farther shore to this sorrow at all,

Verse 9 (6.65.9)

samudrasyeva mahato bhujābhyāṃ pratarannaraḥ | putrāṇāṃ vyasanaṃ manye dhruvaṃ prāptaṃ sudāruṇam

like a man trying to swim across the great ocean with his arms. I think a most terrible calamity has surely come upon my sons.

Note on the text: = 6.61.8cd + 9ab.

Verse 10 (6.65.10)

ghātayiṣyati me sarvānputrānbhīmo na saṃśayaḥ | na hi paśyāmi taṃ vīraṃ yo me rakṣetsutānraṇe

Bhima will kill all my sons, there is no doubt of it. For I see no hero who could protect my sons in battle.

Note on the text: = 6.61.9cd + 10ab. Corrected स्रवान् → सर्वान् and शंसयः → संशयः (misprints in Wikisource; transposed letters in both; the critical edition reads sarvān, saṃśayaḥ).

Verse 11 (6.65.11)

dhruvaṃ vināśaḥ saṃprāptaḥ putrāṇāṃ mama sañjaya | tasmānme kāraṇaṃ sūta śaktiṃ caiva viśeṣataḥ

Surely the destruction of my sons has come, Sanjaya. Therefore, O Suta, the cause of it, and above all their power,

Note on the text: = 6.61.10cd + 11ab. Corrected पुत्रामां → पुत्राणां (misprint in Wikisource; म for ण; the critical edition reads putrāṇāṃ). संप्राप्तः and शक्तिं (CE samare, yuktiṃ) kept as recension variants.

Verse 12 (6.65.12)

pṛcchato vai yathātattvaṃ sarvamākhyātumarhasi | duryodhanaśca yaccakre dṛṣṭvā svānvimukhānraṇe

you should tell me in full and truly, since I ask. And what did Duryodhana do when he saw his own men turned back in battle?

Note on the text: = 6.61.11cd + 12ab (वै for 'dya, दुर्योधनश्च for duryodhano 'pi).

Verse 13 (6.65.13)

bhīṣmadroṇau kṛpaścaiva saubalaśca jayadrathaḥ | drauṇirvāpi maheṣvāso vikarṇo vā mahābalaḥ

Bhishma and Drona, Kripa, Saubala (Shakuni) and Jayadratha, the great archer Ashvatthama, or the mighty Vikarna:

Note on the text: = 6.61.12cd + 12ef (सौबलश्च for saubaleyo).

Verse 14 (6.65.14)

niścayo vāpi kasteṣāṃ tadā hyāsīnmahātmanām | vimukheṣu mahāprājña mama putreṣu sañjaya

what resolve did those great-souled men form then, O wise one, when my sons had turned away, Sanjaya?

Note on the text: Corrected महात्मानाम् → महात्मनाम् (misprint in Wikisource; a stray long ā, the genitive plural of महात्मन् is महात्मनाम्; the critical edition reads mahātmanām).

śṛṇu rājannavahitaḥ śrutvā caivāvadhāraya | naiva mantrakṛtaṃ kiṃcinnaiva māyāṃ tathāvidhām

Listen attentively, O king, and having heard, take it to heart. The Pandavas use no spell at all, nor any such magic,

Note on the text: = 6.61.14ab + 14cd. Corrected श्रृणु → शृणु (misprint in Wikisource; श्रृ is a broken spelling of शृ; the critical edition reads śṛṇu).

Verse 16 (6.65.16)

nor do they work any trick to cause terror, O king. They fight fairly, and they are strong in battle.

Note on the text: = 6.61.14ef + 15ab.

Verse 17 (6.65.17)

dharmeṇa sarvakāryāṇi jīvitādīni bhārata | ārabhante sadā pārthāḥ prārthayānā mahadyaśaḥ

By dharma, O Bharata, the sons of Pritha always undertake all their tasks, their very livelihood included, seeking great fame.

Note on the text: = 6.61.15cd + 15ef (जीवितादीनि for kīrtitānīti).

Verse 18 (6.65.18)

Note on the text: = 6.61.16ab + 16cd.

Verse 19 (6.65.19)

tenāvadhyā raṇe pārthā jayayuktāśca pārthiva | tava putrā durātmānaḥ pāpeṣvabhiratāḥ sadā

That is why the sons of Pritha cannot be slain in battle and are crowned with victory, O lord of the earth. Your sons are evil-minded, ever delighting in wickedness,

Note on the text: = 6.61.16ef + 17ab.

Verse 20 (6.65.20)

niṣṭhurā hīnakarmāṇastena hīyanti saṃyuge | subahūni nṛśaṃsāni putraistava janeśvara

harsh and base in their deeds; that is why they are worsted in battle. Very many cruel wrongs, O lord of men, have your sons

Note on the text: = 6.61.17cd + 18ab. Corrected जनेश्वरे → जनेश्वर (misprint in Wikisource; a stray e-sign turns the vocative into a locative that has no sense here; the critical edition reads janeśvara).

Verse 21 (6.65.21)

nikṛtānīha pāṇḍūnāṃ nīcairiva yathā naraiḥ | sarvaṃ ca tadanādṛtya putrāṇāṃ tava kilbiṣam

done to the Pandavas here, like base men. Yet, disregarding all that wrongdoing of your sons,

Note on the text: = 6.61.18cd + 19ab.

Verse 22 (6.65.22)

dharmamūlāḥ sadaivāsanpāṇḍavāḥ pāṇḍupūrvaja | na caitānbahumanyante putrāstava viśāṃpate

the Pandavas have always held to dharma as their root, O elder brother of Pandu; and still your sons, O lord of the people, do not respect them.

Note on the text: = 6.61.19cd + 19ef (धर्ममूलाः for sāpahnavāḥ; the page's own gloss mentions सापह्नवाः as another reading; kept). The page closes this verse with a single danda; the closing ॥ is kept.

Verse 23 (6.65.23)

by Vidura, by Bhishma and by the great-souled Drona. And though I too held you back again and again, you did not understand

Note on the text: = 6.61.21cd + 22ab. Corrected द्रोणेन न → द्रोणेन च (misprint in Wikisource; the negative न makes nonsense of the list of those who warned him; the critical edition reads droṇena ca). (CE na gṛhṇasi) kept as a recension variant.
