The Mountains, Rivers and Peoples of Bharatavarsha

Dhritarashtra asks Sanjaya about Bharatavarsha, the land over which his sons and the Pandavas are about to fight. Sanjaya names the seven principal mountain ranges, a long roll of rivers, and the realms and peoples of the middle country, the south and the north. He ends by explaining why kings contend for the earth: well tended, she yields the fruits of dharma, wealth and pleasure like a wish-granting cow, and no one's hunger for her is ever sated.
