Satyaki Reports Arjuna's Charge; Yudhishthira Sends Him On

Satyaki answers Yudhishthira's order to go after Arjuna: he will obey, but he reports Arjuna's repeated charge to guard the king against Drona, who is bent on seizing him, and says he cannot leave Yudhishthira without a protector. Yudhishthira names those who will guard him, Bhima, Dhrishtadyumna, the sons of Draupadi, the Kekayas, Virata, Drupada and the rest, and sends Satyaki off without anxiety.

Verse 1 (7.111.1)

prītiyuktaṃ ca hṛdyaṃ ca mānanīyaṃ ca sarvaśaḥ | kālayuktaṃ ca citraṃ ca svadhiyā cābhibhāṣitam

The speech was full of affection and warmth, worthy of honour in every way, suited to the moment and richly varied, spoken out of his own good judgment.

Verse 2 (7.111.2)

śrutaṃ te gadato vākyaṃ sarvametanmayā'cyuta | nyāyayuktaṃ ca satyaṃ ca phalgunārthe yaśaskaram

I have heard all these words you have spoken, O unfallen one; they are just and true, and they bring glory to Phalguna's cause.

Note on the text: Speaker: Satyaki. The page prints only "सञ्जय उवाच" (before verse 1) and "युधिष्ठिर उवाच" (before verse 41); verses 3-40 are Satyaki's direct speech to Yudhishthira (verses 11-21 are Arjuna's charge to Satyaki quoted within it), so the input's carried-over Sanjaya is corrected throughout.

Verse 4 (7.111.4)

evaṃvidhe tathā kāle mādṛśaṃ prekṣya sattama | vaktumarhasi rājendra yathā pārthaṃ tathaiva mām

At such a time, O best of men, you should look to one like me and speak to me, O king of kings, just as you would to Partha.

Verse 5 (7.111.5)

na me dhanañjayasyārthe prāṇā rakṣyāḥ kathañcana | tvatprayuktaḥ punarahaṃ kiṃ na kuryāṃ mahāhave

For Dhananjaya's sake my life is in no way to be spared. Sent by you, what would I not do in the great battle?

Note on the text: Corrected नकुर्यां → न कुर्यां (misprint in Wikisource; missing word space).

Verse 6 (7.111.6)

lokatrayaṃ yodhayeyaṃ sadevāsuramānuṣam | tvatprayukto narendrendra kimpunastānsudurbalān

Sent by you, O lord of lords of men, I could fight the three worlds with their gods, asuras and men; how much more these weaklings!

Verse 7 (7.111.7)

suyodhanabalaṃ tvadya yodhayiṣye samantataḥ | vijeṣye ca raṇe rājansatyametadbravīmi te

Today I shall fight Suyodhana's army from every side, and I shall defeat it in battle, O king; I tell you this truth.

Verse 8 (7.111.8)

avaśyaṃ tu mayā sarvaṃ vijñāpyastvaṃ narādhipa | vāsudevasya yadvākyaṃ phalgunasya ca dhīmataḥ

But I must report everything to you, O lord of men: what Vasudeva said, and what wise Phalguna said.

Verse 10 (7.111.10)

dṛḍhaṃ tvabhihitaścāhamarjunena punaḥpunaḥ | madhye sarvasya sainyasya vāsudevasya śṛṇvataḥ

Arjuna charged me firmly, again and again, in the midst of the whole army, with Vasudeva listening:

Verse 11 (7.111.11)

adya mādhava rājānamapramatto'nupālaya | āryāṃ yuddhe matiṃ kṛtvā yāvaddhanmi jayadratham

Verse 12 (7.111.12)

tvayi cāhaṃ mahābāho pradyumne vā mahārathe | nṛpaṃ nikṣipya gaccheyaṃ nirapekṣo jayadratham

Having entrusted the king to you, O mighty-armed one, or to the great warrior Pradyumna, I could go after Jayadratha free of care.

Verse 13 (7.111.13)

jānīṣe hi raṇe droṇaṃ kuruṣu śreṣṭhasammatam | pratijñā cāpi te nityaṃ śrutā droṇasya mādhava

You know Drona in battle, held in the highest esteem among the Kurus, and you have always heard Drona's vow, O Madhava.

Verse 14 (7.111.14)

grahaṇe dharmarājasya bhāradvājo'pi gṛdhyati | śaktaścāpi raṇe droṇo nigrahītuṃ yudhiṣṭhiram

Bharadvaja's son is eager to seize Dharmaraja, and Drona is able in battle to take Yudhishthira captive.

So today, O Madhava, be vigilant in battle and guard the Pandava; if Dharmaraja is guarded, my victory is certain.

Note on the text: Stray quote marks removed. Corrected रक्षेणे → रक्षणे (misprint in Wikisource; e for a; the CE star line has rakṣaṇe). Not in the critical edition's main text; star passage 7.86.15d*0583_01-02 (placed after 7.86.15). The automatic alignment found no match. Speaker: Satyaki, still reporting Arjuna's charge.

Verse 17 (7.111.17)

jayadrathaṃ ca hatvā'haṃ drutameṣyāmi mādhava | dharmarājaṃ na ceddroṇo nigṛhṇīyādraṇe balāt

And having killed Jayadratha I shall come back quickly, O Madhava, provided Drona does not seize Dharmaraja by force in battle.

Verse 18 (7.111.18)

nigṛhīte naraśreṣṭhe bhāradvājena mādhava | saindhavasya vadho na syānmamāprītistathā bhavet

If the best of men is seized by Bharadvaja's son, O Madhava, the Saindhava will not be killed, and that would grieve me.

Verse 19 (7.111.19)

evaṅgate naraśreṣṭhe pāṇḍave satyavādini | asmākaṃ gamanaṃ vyaktaṃ vanaṃ prati bhavetpunaḥ

If it comes to this for the truthful Pandava, best of men, we shall clearly have to go to the forest again.

Note on the text: Corrected सत्यवादिति → सत्यवादिनि (misprint in Wikisource; locative ending lost; the CE has satyavādini).

Verse 20 (7.111.20)

so'yaṃ mama jayo vyaktaṃ vyartha eva bhaviṣyati | yadi droṇo raṇe kruddho nigṛhṇīyādyudhiṣṭhiram

This victory of mine will plainly turn out to be in vain if Drona, enraged in battle, seizes Yudhishthira.

Verse 21 (7.111.21)

sa tvamadya mahābāho priyārthaṃ mama mādhava | jayārthaṃ ca yaśorthaṃ ca rakṣa rājānamāhave

So today, O mighty-armed Madhava, for my sake, for victory and for glory, protect the king in the battle.'

sa bhavānmayi nikṣepo nikṣiptaḥ savyasācinā | bhāradvājādbhayaṃ nityaṃ manyamānena vai prabho

You, my lord, are a trust that Savyasachin has placed with me, for he always sees danger to you from Bharadvaja's son.

Verse 23 (7.111.23)

tasyāpi ca mahābāho nityaṃ paśyāmi saṃyuge | nānyaṃ hi pratiyoddhāraṃ raukmiṇeyādṛte prabho

And of Drona too, O mighty-armed one, I always see, in battle, no other opponent but Rukmini's son, O lord.

Note on the text: Lines 1-2 are CE 7.86.22a-d (CE has पश्यति for Wikisource पश्यामि); the critical edition's 7.86.22 runs to three lines, its third line opening the next verse here. The automatic alignment found no match.

Verse 24 (7.111.24)

Note on the text: Corrected संभावनानं चैता → संभावनां चैता (misprint in Wikisource; case ending garbled; the CE has saṃbhāvanāṃ caitām). Line 1 is CE 7.86.22e (CE has मां वापि for Wikisource मां चापि); lines 2-3 are CE 7.86.23. The automatic alignment found no match.

ācāryo laghuhastatvādabhedyakavacāvṛtaḥ | upalabhya raṇe krīḍedyathā śakuninā śiśuḥ

Verse 26 (7.111.26)

udyuktāḥ pṛthivīpāla sasurāsuramānuṣāḥ | sarākṣasagaṇā rājansakinnaramahoragāḥ

Even if they all rose up together, O protector of the earth, the gods, asuras and men, the hosts of rakshasas, the kinnaras and the great serpents,

jaṅgamasthāvaraiḥ sārdhaṃ nālaṃ pārthasya saṃyuge | evaṃ jñātvā mahārāja vyetu te bhīrdhanañjaye

together with all things that move and do not move, they are no match for Partha in battle. Knowing this, O great king, let your fear of Dhananjaya leave you.

visrabdhaṃ gaccha śaineya mā kārṣīrmayi sambhramam | dhṛṣṭadyumno raṇe kruddhaṃ droṇamāvārayiṣyati

Go without anxiety, Shaineya, and do not be troubled about me; Dhrishtadyumna, angry in battle, will hold Drona back.

Note on the text: Corrected विक्रुधं → विस्रब्धं (misprint in Wikisource; not a word; the CE has viśrabdho, the vulgate विस्रब्धम्).
