Bhima Slays Seven of Dhritarashtra's Sons

Stung by Bhima's bowstring, Karna attacks him, and the two bury each other in arrows while ten great warriors cheer. Duryodhana sends seven of his brothers to guard Karna, but Bhima kills all seven — Shatrunjaya, Shatrusaha, Chitra, Chitrayudha, Dridha, Chitrasena and Vikarna — before Karna's eyes, and Yudhishthira, hearing his roar, advances on Drona. Sanjaya then recalls the insults to Draupadi and Vidura's unheeded counsel, and tells Dhritarashtra that he himself is the cause of his sons' ruin.

Verse 1 (7.137.1)

भीमसेनस्य राधेयः श्रुत्वा ज्यातलनिःस्वनम् । नामृष्यत यथा मत्तो गजः प्रतिगजस्वनम् ॥

bhīmasenasya rādheyaḥ śrutvā jyātalaniḥsvanam | nāmṛṣyata yathā matto gajaḥ pratigajasvanam

When Karna, the son of Radha, heard the twang of Bhimasena's bowstring, he could not bear it, as a rutting elephant cannot bear the trumpeting of a rival elephant.

Note on the text: Joined from the two half-verse rows the page prints separately (7-137-1a/b); text as printed. Corrected ज्यातलनिः स्वनम् → ज्यातलनिःस्वनम् (misprints in Wikisource; stray space inside the compound). Both lines are the critical edition's 7.112.1; the CE reads jyātalanisvanam (no visarga) for the page's ज्यातलनिःस्वनम् (kept). Adhyaya note: the input for this adhyaya was mis-parsed (each half-line of the raw page was taken as a separate row, so the numbers ran 1, 1, 2, 2, … and nothing was aligned to the critical edition). The text was rebuilt from the raw Wikisource page, joining the a/b half-lines of each numbered verse (53 verses, the page's own numbers kept; verses 27 and 44 have three lines). The whole page is the critical edition's adhyaya 7.112 (7.112.1-45, with the star passages *0877, *0879-*0882, *0884-*0886 and *0888); the page omits the CE's star passages *0878, *0883, *0887 and *0889 and lines 7.112.2cd and 7.112.39c. The page prints headings "सञ्जय उवाच" before verses 1, 20 and 36; the unheaded speeches of Duryodhana (18-19) and Bhimasena (32-35) are assigned to them, as the sense requires.

Verse 2 (7.137.2)

सोऽपक्रम्य मुहूर्तं तु भीमसेनस्य गोचरात् । पुत्रांस्तव ददर्शाथ भीमसेनेन पातितान् ॥

so'pakramya muhūrtaṃ tu bhīmasenasya gocarāt | putrāṃstava dadarśātha bhīmasenena pātitān

Then Karna, having drawn away for a moment from the range of Bhimasena's arrows, saw your sons who had been struck down by Bhimasena.

Note on the text: Joined from the two half-verse rows the page prints separately (7-137-2a/b); text as printed. Corrected सोपक्रम्य → सोऽपक्रम्य, मुहूर्तै → मुहूर्तं (misprints in Wikisource; missing avagraha; the critical edition reads apakramya sa; stray vowel sign; the critical edition reads muhūrtaṃ). Line 1 is a variant of the critical edition's 7.112.2ab (sa … apakramya … śaragocarāt); line 2 is the star line 7.112.2d*0877_01. The CE's own line 7.112.2cd (tava cādhirathir dṛṣṭvā syandanebhyaś cyutān sutān) is not on the page.

Verse 3 (7.137.3)

तानवेक्ष्य नरश्रेष्ठ विमना दुःखितस्तदा । निःश्वसन्दीर्घमुष्णं च कर्णः पाण्डवमभ्ययात् ॥

tānavekṣya naraśreṣṭha vimanā duḥkhitastadā | niḥśvasandīrghamuṣṇaṃ ca karṇaḥ pāṇḍavamabhyayāt

Seeing them, O best of men, Karna was downcast and grieved; sighing long and hot, he advanced against the Pandava.

Note on the text: Joined from the two half-verse rows the page prints separately (7-137-3a/b); text as printed. Corrected निः श्वसन् → निःश्वसन् (misprints in Wikisource; stray space inside the word). A variant of the critical edition's 7.112.3 (the CE has bhīmasenena nihatān vimanā duḥkhito 'bhavat / … punaḥ pāṇḍavam abhyayāt); kept as printed.

Verse 4 (7.137.4)

स ताम्रनयनः क्रोधाच्छ्वसन्निव महोरगः । बभौ कर्णः शरानस्यन्रश्मीनिव दिवाकरः ॥

sa tāmranayanaḥ krodhācchvasanniva mahoragaḥ | babhau karṇaḥ śarānasyanraśmīniva divākaraḥ

His eyes red with rage, hissing like a great serpent, Karna shone as he shot his arrows, like the sun sending out its rays.

Note on the text: Joined from the two half-verse rows the page prints separately (7-137-4a/b); text as printed. Corrected रशमीनिव → रश्मीनिव (misprints in Wikisource; broken conjunct). Line 1 is the critical edition's 7.112.4a; line 2 is a variant of 7.112.4c (the CE reads raśmivān iva bhāskaraḥ).

kiraṇairiva sūryasya mahīdhro bharatarṣabha | karṇacāpacyutairvāṇaiḥ prācchādyata vṛkodaraḥ

O best of the Bharatas, as a mountain is covered by the sun's rays, so Vrikodara was covered by the arrows shot from Karna's bow.

Note on the text: Joined from the two half-verse rows the page prints separately (7-137-5a/b); text as printed. Line 1 is a variant of the critical edition's 7.112.5a (raśmijālair ivārkasya vitatair); line 2 is 7.112.5c.

te karṇacāpaprabhavāḥ śarā barhiṇavāsasaḥ | viviśuḥ sarvataḥ pārtha vāsāyevāṇḍajādrumam

Those arrows born of Karna's bow, clothed in peacock feathers, entered the son of Pritha on every side, as birds enter a tree to roost.

Note on the text: Joined from the two half-verse rows the page prints separately (7-137-6a/b); text as printed. Line 1 is a variant of the critical edition's 7.112.6a (karṇacāpacyutāś citrāḥ śarā barhiṇavāsasaḥ); line 2 is 7.112.6c.

karṇacāpacyutā bāṇāḥ saṃpatantastatastataḥ | rukmapuṅkhā vyarājanta haṃsāḥ śreṇīkṛtā iva

The arrows falling from Karna's bow, dropping this way and that, golden-shafted, looked like geese flying in ordered rows.

From his bow, his banner, his fittings, his umbrella, the tip of the chariot-pole and the yoke, O king, the arrows of Adhiratha's son were seen streaming out.

Note on the text: Joined from the two half-verse rows the page prints separately (7-137-8a/b); text as printed. Identical to the critical edition's 7.112.8.

Filling the sky with great speed, Adhiratha's son loosed arrows that sped through the air, vulture-feathered, wondrous, wrought with gold.

Note on the text: Joined from the two half-verse rows the page prints separately (7-137-9a/b); text as printed. Corrected सुवर्ण्विकृतांश्चित्रान् → सुवर्णविकृतांश्चित्रान् (misprints in Wikisource; stray virama).
