Drona Kills Drupada and Virata
As the last third of the night runs out, dawn reddens the sky and both armies break off to pray to the sun. Fighting resumes; at Krishna's word Arjuna keeps the Kurus on his left, and Bhima urges him to break their ranks, so that dust and arrows blot out the field. Drona withdraws, then cuts down Drupada's three grandsons, Virata and Drupada. Dhrishtadyumna swears a terrible oath, Bhima taunts him into action, and the Panchalas and Pandavas press on Drona until the sun reaches the twilight hour.

Seeing Drona, radiant with splendour and blazing as it were with energy, the foe shook, wavered and wilted, O Bharata.
Note on the text: Corrected चेरुर्मम्लुश्च → चेलुर्मम्लुश्च (misprint in Wikisource; “moved about” makes no sense in the series त्रेसुः, चेलुः, मम्लुः “trembled, shook, withered”; CE celur mamluś ca). Some lost heart; some, being proud-spirited, were enraged; some were astonished, and some grew bold in the fight.
Note on the text: Corrected केचिद्वृष्टा → केचिद्धृष्टा (misprint in Wikisource; वृष्टा, “rained”, is meaningless here; read केचित् + हृष्टाः/धृष्टाः, which coincide in sandhi, here taken as “bold”). Line 2 is a recension variant (the CE has ke cid āsann amarṣitāḥ); kept.

Having thus pledged himself in the midst of all the bowmen, the Panchala prince, slayer of enemy heroes, advanced on Drona with his troops.
Note on the text: Corrected पाञ्चाल्यऋ → पाञ्चाल्यः (misprint in Wikisource; a stray ऋ for the visarga; CE pāñcālyaḥ). Lines 1–2 are CE 7.161.38a and 38c (the alignment left it unmatched); the CE's third line (38e) is line 1 of the next verse.
Verse 47 (7.187.47)
pāñcālāstvekato droṇamabhyaghnanpāṇḍavaiḥ saha | duryodhanaśca karṇaśca śakuniścāpi saubalaḥ | sodaryāśca yathā mukhyāste'rakṣandroṇamāhave
On one side the Panchalas, together with the Pandavas, struck at Drona; and Duryodhana, Karna, Shakuni, son of Subala, and the foremost of his brothers guarded Drona in the fight.
Note on the text: Corrected द्रोणभ्यघ्नन् → द्रोणमभ्यघ्नन् (misprint in Wikisource; a dropped म; CE droṇam abhyaghnan). Line 1 is CE 7.161.38e (the page reads पाण्डवैः सह where the CE has pāṇḍavānyataḥ, a variant); lines 2–3 are CE 7.161.39a and 39c. The alignment left it unmatched.
Verse 48 (7.187.48)
rakṣyamāṇaṃ tathā droṇaṃ sarvaistaistu mahārathaiḥ | yatamānāstu pāñcālā na śekuḥ prativīkṣitum
Though the Panchalas strove hard, they could not even look at Drona, guarded as he was by all those great chariot-warriors.
Verse 49 (7.187.49)
tatrākrudhyadbhīmaseno dhṛṣṭadyumnasya māriṣa | sa enaṃ vāgbhirugrābhistatakṣa puruṣarṣabhaḥ
Then Bhimasena, O Marisha, grew angry with Dhrishtadyumna, and that bull among men lashed him with fierce words.

Verse 50 (7.187.50)
drupadasya kule jātaḥ sarvāstreṣvastravittamaḥ | kaḥ kṣatriyo manyamānaḥ prekṣetārimavasthitam
Born in Drupada's line, foremost of all who know the use of weapons — what kshatriya who thought himself one would stand and watch while the enemy holds his ground?
Verse 51 (7.187.51)
pitṛputravadhaṃ prāpya puṃstvaṃ ko vā praharṣayet | viśeṣatastu śapathaṃ śapitvā rājasaṃsadi
Who, having suffered the slaying of his father and his son, could still feel proud of his manhood — above all one who has sworn an oath in the royal assembly?
Verse 52 (7.187.52)
eṣa vaiśvānara iva samiddhaḥ svena tejasā | śaracāpendhano droṇaḥ kṣatraṃ dahati tejasā
Here is Drona, blazing with his own energy like Vaishvanara, the fire, with bow and arrows for fuel, burning the kshatriyas with his fire.
Verse 53 (7.187.53)
purā karoti niḥśeṣāṃ pāṇḍavānāmanīkinīm | sthitāḥ paśyata me karma droṇameva vrajāmyaham
Before he makes an end of the Pandava army, stand where you are and watch what I do. I go straight at Drona.

Verse 54 (7.187.54)
ityuktvā prāviśatkruddho droṇānīkaṃ vṛkodaraḥ | śaraiḥ pūrṇāyatotsṛṣṭairdrāvayaṃstava vāhinīm
Saying this, Vrikodara entered Drona's host in rage, driving your army before him with arrows loosed from his fully drawn bow.
Note on the text: Corrected पूर्णायतोत्सृष्टौर् → पूर्णायतोत्सृष्टैर् (misprint in Wikisource; CE pūrṇāyatotsṛṣṭair). Speaker corrected to Sanjaya: Bhima's speech (printed heading at verse 50) ends with verse 53, and verses 54–59 are narration (the input carried Bhimasena over).
Verse 55 (7.187.55)
dhṛṣṭadyumno'pi pāñcālyaḥ praviśya mahatīṃ camūm | āsasāda raṇe droṇaṃ tadāsīttumulaṃ mahat
Dhrishtadyumna too, the Panchala, plunged into the great host and reached Drona in the battle, and a mighty tumult arose.
Verse 56 (7.187.56)
naiva nastādṛśaṃ yuddhaṃ dṛṣṭapūrvaṃ na ca śrutam | yathā sūryodaye rājansamutpiñjo'bhavanmahān
We had never before seen or heard of such a battle as the great confusion that arose at sunrise, O king.
Verse 57 (7.187.57)
saṃsaktānyeva cādṛśyanrathavṛndāni māriṣa | hatāni ca vikīrṇāni śarīrāṇi śarīriṇām
Masses of chariots were seen locked together, O Marisha, and the slain bodies of living beings lay scattered about.
Note on the text: Corrected सरीराणि → शरीराणि (misprint in Wikisource; CE śarīrāṇi).
Verse 58 (7.187.58)
kecidanyatra gacchantaḥ pathi cānyairupadrutāḥ | vimukhāḥ pṛṣṭhataścānye tāḍyante pārśvataḥ pare
Some going one way were assailed on the road by others; some, turned away, were struck from behind, and others from the side.
Verse 59 (7.187.59)
tathā saṃsaktayuddhaṃ tadabhavadbhṛśadāruṇam | atha sandhyāgataḥ sūryaḥ kṣaṇena samapadyata
So the fight, locked in close combat, grew fearfully savage; and then in a moment the sun had reached the twilight hour.
