The Carnage on the Field

Sanjaya describes the battle in its full fury: chariots, horses, elephants and foot-soldiers crash together, the earth turns red with blood, and severed heads, arms and ornaments cover the ground. Wounded elephants and horses fall, rivers of blood flow among the dead, spirits and scavengers feast, and the warriors, fearless, shout their names and lineages as the Kaurava army begins to sink like a shattered ship.
