Arjuna Overcomes the Samshaptakas and Susharma
Sanjaya tells how Susharma wounds Arjuna and Krishna and pierces Arjuna's banner, whose monkey roars and freezes the Kuru army with fear. The Samshaptakas swarm over Arjuna's chariot and bind it fast, but Arjuna throws them off, sounds Devadatta (answered by Krishna's Panchajanya), and slays them after binding their feet with the serpent weapon. Susharma frees them with the Suparna weapon and wounds Arjuna, who sinks down for a moment, then recovers and kills thousands more with Indra's weapon before the Samshaptakas close round him again, resolved to conquer or die.

Slaying horses and foot-soldiers by the hundred thousand with his weapons in the battle, he shone, O king, like Shakra smiting the asuras.
Note on the text: Line 1 echoes CE 8.37.32c (hayān rathāṃś ca samare śastraiḥ śatasahasraśaḥ); line 2 = CE star line 8.37.32d*0499_01 (rarāja samare rājañ śakro nighnann ivāsurān). The automatic alignment found no match.

There was no man there who could stand against Arjuna; before the eyes of the heroes, your army was being destroyed.

And, being struck down, it became powerless in its valour.
Note on the text: A single line on the page (8-48-47a only), kept as printed. It is a variant of the second half of CE 8.37.34 (hanyamānam apaśyaṃś ca niśceṣṭāḥ sma parākrame); the CE verse (34ab = this page's verse 46, line 2) is divided differently here, so no line is judged lost. Fourteen thousand were seen there, O Bharata, together with ten thousand chariots and three thousand elephants.
