Karna Is Consecrated as Commander

After Drona's fall the Kaurava army is called back at dusk, and Duryodhana asks his captains in council what is to be done. Ashvatthama proposes Karna as general, and Duryodhana, pleased, begs Karna to take up the burden that Bhishma and Drona carried. Karna accepts and is consecrated by the kings with the rites of the scriptures, while bards and Brahmins hail him and urge him to destroy the Pandavas.

Note on the text: Adhyaya note: this page (Wikisource adhyaya 7) corresponds to critical-edition adhyaya 8.6 (verses 8.6.1–46). The input agrees with the raw page's table row for row (65 verses, numbers 1–65), so no rebuild was needed. The page's first line (अश्वत्थामवचनाद्… ॥ 1 ॥) is a chapter-summary heading, not a verse, and the closing colophon is not a verse. Wikisource includes CE star passages 8.6.5d*0062, 15b*0064, 15d*0065–0068, 32d*0070, 38d*0072, 38d*0074 and 42d*0075; CE star passages 8.6.7d*0063, 32d*0069, 34d*0071 and 38d*0073 are not in Wikisource. Speeches with no printed heading: Duryodhana's question (verse 11) and speech (25–40), Ashvatthama's speech (14–19), the bards' and Brahmins' acclamation (55–57), Karna's speech (59–61).

and while the ocean of the Kaurava host was fleeing, O great king, Partha drew up his own army in array and stood there surrounded by his brothers.

Note on the text: Corrected अतिष्ठद्वातृभिर् → अतिष्ठद्भ्रातृभिर् (misprint in Wikisource; the conjunct भ्रा is broken; the critical edition has bhrātṛbhiḥ saha).

The enemy, elated and having gained their aims, had been straining themselves for long; so when evening came he had the troops called back.

Verse 6 (8.7.6)

He settled the mighty, fearsome host in camp, though it was oppressed by hunger and thirst, worn down by great weariness and by the death of Drona,

Note on the text: Corrected बलवद्वोरं → बलवद्घोरं (misprint in Wikisource; the conjunct घ is mistyped as व; the critical edition has balaṃ ghoraṃ). "Devotion, favourable conditions, skill and policy: these, the learned say, are the means of accomplishing an aim; but all of them rest upon fate.

Note on the text: Corrected दाक्ष्यां → दाक्ष्यं (misprint in Wikisource; a stray ā; the word is neuter दाक्ष्यम्, as in the critical edition (dākṣyaṃ)). Ashvatthama's speech (verses 14–19) has no printed heading; it follows verse 13 (वाक्यमाददे). Wikisource's "ते तु दैवमुपाश्रिताः" (CE: sarve daivasamāśritāḥ) is kept as a recension variant.

Holding that hope in his heart and taking comfort, O Bharata, Duryodhana, pleased on hearing those words of his, which were kind, respectful, true, auspicious and good for himself,

Note on the text: Removed the square brackets that Wikisource prints round lines 2–3, and corrected शूभम् → शुभम् (misprint in Wikisource; stray long ū; the critical edition has śubham). vṛddhau ca tau maheṣvāsau sāpekṣau ca dhanañjaye | mānitau ca mayā vīrau rādheya vacanāttava

Both of them were old, and both had a tender regard for Dhananjaya; yet at your word, Radheya, I showed those two heroes every honour.

Note on the text: Corrected वृद्धो → वृद्धौ (misprint in Wikisource; dual ending mistyped; it must agree with तौ महेष्वासौ, and the critical edition has vṛddhau). Corrected सापेक्षो → सापेक्षौ (misprint in Wikisource; dual ending mistyped; the critical edition has sāpekṣau).

You alone are able to bring us victory, without doubt; at the beginning, in the middle and at the end, what was good for us has been provided likewise by you.

Note on the text: Corrected पश्चाश्च → पश्चाच्च (misprint in Wikisource; the final consonant is mistyped; the critical edition has paścāc ca). Wikisource's second line ("तथैव विहितं हितम्") is a recension variant of CE 8.6.27c ("tavaiva viditaṃ hi tat"); the commentary supplies "विहितं त्वया".

So, like a bullock under the yoke, you ought to take up the burden in battle. Have yourself consecrated as general, yourself, by yourself.

Note on the text: Corrected धुरमुद्वोऽढुम् → धुरमुद्वोढुम् (misprint in Wikisource; a spurious avagraha and a doubled अ break the infinitive उद्वोढुम्; the critical edition has udvoḍhum).
