Karna Marshals the Makara Array and Yudhishthira Answers
Dhritarashtra asks what Karna did once he was general. Sanjaya tells how the muster was sounded in the last watch of the night, how Karna rode out and drew up the Kaurava host in the makara (crocodile) array with each chief at his post, and how Yudhishthira, pointing out Karna as the one great warrior left, bade Arjuna array the Pandava host. Arjuna formed the half-moon array, the two armies faced each other with a roar of instruments, and the battle of men, elephants, horses and chariots began.

Note on the text: Adhyaya note: this page (Wikisource adhyaya 8) corresponds to critical-edition adhyaya 8.7 (verses 8.7.1–42). The input agrees with the raw page's table row for row (43 verses, numbers 1–43; the raw page's "8-1-29a" is a typo for 8-8-29a), so no rebuild was needed. The page's first line (कर्णार्जुनाक्ष्यां… ॥ 1 ॥) is a chapter-summary heading, and the closing colophon (with its added note about the opening of the sixteenth day's battle) is not a verse. CE star passage 8.7.2b*0076 is line 1 of Wikisource verse 2, and CE star passage 8.7.14b*0077 is not in Wikisource; the CE's 8.7.2a line ("yogam ājñāpya senāyā …") has no counterpart in Wikisource, whose Dhritarashtra question is complete without it and was left as printed. Yudhishthira's speech (verses 23–27) has no printed heading.
