Duryodhana Humiliated in the Hall

Lingering in the Pandavas' hall with Shakuni, Duryodhana is fooled again and again by its illusions: he lifts his robe on a crystal floor, falls into a pool he takes for dry ground, and strikes his head on a crystal door, while Bhima, Arjuna, the twins and the servants laugh at him. Returning to Hastinapura consumed by envy, he confesses to Shakuni that he cannot bear the Pandavas' fortune, that fate seems all-powerful and his own efforts useless, and that he would rather die; he asks Shakuni to tell Dhritarashtra of his anguish.

vasanduryodhanastasyāṃ sabhāyāṃ puruṣarṣabha | śanairdadarśa tāṃ sarvāṃ sabhāṃ śakuninā saha

Staying on in that hall, bull among men, Duryodhana slowly looked over the whole of it together with Shakuni.

Verse 2 (2.74.2)

tasyāṃ divyānabhiprāyāndadarśa kurunandanaḥ | na dṛṣṭapūrvā ye tena nagare nāgasāhvaye

Verse 3 (2.74.3)

sa kadācitsabhāmadhye dhārtarāṣṭro mahīpatiḥ | sphāṭikaṃ sthalamāsādya jalamityabhiśaṅkayā

Once, in the middle of the hall, the son of Dhritarashtra, lord of the earth, came upon a crystal floor and, suspecting it to be water,

Verse 4 (2.74.4)

svavastrotkarṣaṇaṃ rājā kṛtavānbuddhimohitaḥ | durmanā vimukhaścaiva paricakrāma tāṃ sabhām

the king, his judgement deluded, drew up his garment. Then, downcast and turning away, he went on around the hall.

Verse 5 (2.74.5)

tataḥ sthale nipatito durmanā vrīḍito nṛpaḥ | niḥśvasanvimukhaścāpi paricakrāma tāṃ sabhām

Then, having fallen on dry ground, the king, downcast and ashamed, sighing and turning away, went on around the hall.

Note on the text: Joined निः श्वसन् → निःश्वसन् (spacing error in Wikisource splitting the word). Not in the critical edition (found in the vulgate recension); the first line is in the critical edition's apparatus as star passage 421, after 2.43.4; the second is not there.

Verse 6 (2.74.6)

tataḥ sphāṭikatoyāṃ vai sphāṭikāmbujaśobhitām | vāpīṃ matvā sthalamiva savāsāḥ prāpatañjale

Then, taking a pool of crystal-clear water adorned with crystal lotuses for dry ground, he fell into the water with his clothes on.

Verse 7 (2.74.7)

jale nipatitaṃ dṛṣṭvā bhīmaseno mahābalaḥ | jahāsa jahasuścaiva kiṅkarāśca suyodhanam

Seeing Suyodhana fallen into the water, mighty Bhimasena laughed, and the servants laughed at him too.

Note on the text: Only the opening words match CE 2.43.6a (jale nipatitaṃ dṛṣṭvā kiṃkarā jahasur bhṛśam); the second line is not in the critical edition (found in the vulgate recension; star passage 422, after 2.43.6).

Verse 8 (2.74.8)

vāsāṃsi ca śubhānyasmai pradadū rājaśāsanāt | tathāgataṃ tu taṃ dṛṣṭvā bhīmaseno mahābalaḥ

At the king's command they gave him fine clothes. Seeing him in that state, mighty Bhimasena,

arjunaśca yamau cobhau sarve te prāhasaṃstadā | nāmarṣayattatasteṣāmavahāsamamarṣaṇaḥ

Arjuna and both the twins all laughed then. Duryodhana, who could not bear slights, did not endure their laughter.

Note on the text: Corresponds to CE 2.43.7cd and 8ab (the verse division differs).

Verse 10 (2.74.10)

Guarding his expression, he did not look at them. Again he lifted his garment, as if about to wade across, at a spot of dry ground

Note on the text: Corrected प्रतिरिष्यन्निव → प्रतरिष्यन्निव (misprint in Wikisource; प्रति- gives no verb form here, the sense being 'as if about to wade across' — the critical edition reads pratariṣyann iva). Corresponds to CE 2.43.8cd and 9ab.

Verse 11 (2.74.11)

āruroha tataḥ sarve jahasuśca punarjanāḥ | dvāraṃ tu pihitākāraṃ sphāṭikaṃ prekṣya bhūmipaḥ | praviśannāhato mūrdhni vyāghūrṇita iva sthitaḥ

and climbed onto it; and again everyone laughed. Then, seeing a crystal door that appeared shut, the king tried to pass through, struck his head, and stood there reeling.

Note on the text: The first line is CE 2.43.9cd; the other two are not in the critical edition (found in the vulgate recension; star passage 424, lines 1–2, after 2.43.9).

Verse 12 (2.74.12)

tādṛśaṃ ca paraṃ dvāraṃ sphāṭikorukavāṭakam | vighaṭṭayankarābhyāṃ tu niṣkramyāgre papāta hā

At another such door, with great crystal panels, he pushed with both hands, came out, and, alas, fell headlong in front of it.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition (found in the vulgate recension; the critical edition prints it in the apparatus as star passage 424, lines 3–4, after 2.43.9).

Verse 13 (2.74.13)

dvāraṃ tu vitatākāraṃ samāpede punaśca saḥ | tadvṛttaṃ ceti manvāno dvārasthānādupāramat

Again he came to a door that stood wide open, and, thinking it would turn out the same way, he drew back from the doorway.

Note on the text: A variant of CE 2.43.10 (dvāraṃ ca vivṛtākāraṃ lalāṭena samāhanat / saṃvṛtaṃ ceti manvāno dvāradeśād upāramat).

Verse 14 (2.74.14)

apahṛṣṭena manasā rājasūye mahākratau | prekṣya tāmadbhutāmṛddhiṃ jagāma gajasāhvayam

and, joyless at heart after seeing the wondrous splendour at the great Rajasuya rite, went to the city named for the elephant.

Verse 16 (2.74.16)

pāṇḍavaśrīprataptasya dhyāyamānasya gacchataḥ | duryodhanasya nṛpateḥ pāpā matirajāyata

As King Duryodhana went along brooding, scorched by the fortune of the Pandavas, an evil resolve was born in him.

Verse 17 (2.74.17)

pārthānsumanaso dṛṣṭvā pārthivāṃśca vaśānugān | kṛtsnaṃ cāpi hitaṃ lokamākumāraṃ kurūdvaha

Seeing the sons of Pritha glad at heart and the kings obedient to them, and the whole world, down to the children, well disposed toward them, O Kuru prince,

Verse 18 (2.74.18)

mahimānaṃ paraṃ cāpi pāṇḍavānāṃ mahātmanām | duryodhano dhārtarāṣṭro vivarṇaḥ samapadyata

and the surpassing greatness of the great-souled Pandavas, Duryodhana, son of Dhritarashtra, turned pale.

Note on the text: Corrected दूर्योधनो → दुर्योधनो (misprint in Wikisource; ू for ु).

Verse 19 (2.74.19)

sa tu gacchannanekāgraḥ sabhāmeko'nvacintayat | śriyaṃ ca tāmanupamāṃ dharmarājasya dhīmataḥ

As he went along, distracted and alone, he kept thinking of the hall and of the matchless fortune of the wise King of Dharma.

Note on the text: Corrected अनेकाग्नः → अनेकाग्रः (misprint in Wikisource; न for र — the critical edition reads anekāgraḥ, as does verse 21).

Verse 20 (2.74.20)

pramatto dhṛtarāṣṭrasya putro duryodhanastadā | nābhyabhāṣatsubalajaṃ bhāṣamāṇaṃ punaḥ punaḥ

Lost in thought, Duryodhana, son of Dhritarashtra, did not answer the son of Subala, though he spoke to him again and again.

Verse 21 (2.74.21)

anekāgraṃ tu taṃ dṛṣṭvā śakuniḥ pratyabhāṣata | duryodhana kutomūlaṃ niḥśvasanniva gacchasi

Seeing him distracted, Shakuni said: "Duryodhana, what is the cause of it, that you go along sighing like this?"

Note on the text: Corrected कृतोमूलं → कुतोमूलं (misprint in Wikisource; ृ for ु — the critical edition reads kutomūlaṃ).

amarṣeṇa tu sampūrṇo dahyamāno divāniśam | śuciśukrāgame kāle śuṣye toyamivālpakam

"I am filled with resentment and burn day and night; I am drying up like a little water when the hot months come.

Verse 25 (2.74.25)

paśya sātvatamukhyena śiśupālo nipātitaḥ | na ca tatra pumānāsītkaścittasya padānugaḥ

dahyamānā hi rājānaḥ pāṇḍavotthena vahninā | kṣāntavanto'parādhaṃ te ko hi tatkṣantumarhati

Verse 27 (2.74.27)

vāsudevena tatkarma yathā'yuktaṃ mahatkṛtam | siddhaṃ ca pāṇḍuputrāṇāṃ pratāpena mahātmanām

"Vasudeva did that great deed, unfitting as it was, and it succeeded through the might of the great-souled sons of Pandu.

Verse 28 (2.74.28)

tathāhi ratnānyādāya vividhāni nṛpā nṛpam | upātiṣṭhanta kaunteyaṃ vaiśyā iva karapradāḥ

"So too the kings, bringing jewels of every kind, waited on the king, the son of Kunti, like vaishyas paying their taxes.

Note on the text: Corrected रत्नन्यादाय → रत्नान्यादाय (misprint in Wikisource; dropped ा — the critical edition reads ratnāny ādāya) and कौन्येयं → कौन्तेयं (misprint; dropped त).

Verse 29 (2.74.29)

śriyaṃ tathāgatāṃ dṛṣṭvā jvalantīmiva pāṇḍave | amarṣavaśamāpanno dahyāmi na tathocitaḥ

"Seeing such fortune with the Pandava, blazing as it were, I have fallen into the grip of resentment and I burn, I who did not deserve this.

Note on the text: Corrected तथागतं → तथागतां (misprint in Wikisource; dropped ा — the adjective must agree with the feminine श्रियं and ज्वलन्तीम्).

Verse 30 (2.74.30)

"I will enter fire, or swallow poison, or drown myself in water; for I shall not be able to live.

Note on the text: Removed a stray zero-width non-joiner character inside प्रवेक्ष्यामि and restored the missing word-space in प्रवेक्ष्यामिन हि → प्रवेक्ष्यामि न हि (misprint in Wikisource).

Verse 31 (2.74.31)

"Seeing such lordship over the earth, such wealth and such a sacrifice, who like me would not burn with fever?

Note on the text: Corrected संञ्ज्वरेत् → सञ्ज्वरेत् (misprint in Wikisource; the nasal is written twice — the critical edition reads saṃjvaret).

Verse 34 (2.74.34)

aśaktaścaika evāhaṃ tāmāhartuṃ nṛpaśriyam | sahāyāṃśca na paśyāmi tena mṛtyuṃ vicintaye

Verse 35 (2.74.35)

daivameva paraṃ manye pauruṣaṃ ca nirarthakam | dṛṣṭvā kuntīsute śuddhāṃ śriyaṃ tāmahatāṃ tathā

"Earlier I made efforts to destroy him, son of Subala; but he overcame them all and grew like a lotus in the water.

Note on the text: Corrected पङ्गजम् → पङ्कजम् (misprint in Wikisource; ग for क — the critical edition reads paṅkajam).

Verse 37 (2.74.37)

tena daivaṃ paraṃ manye pauruṣaṃ ca nirarthakam | dhārtarāṣṭrāśca hīyante pārthā vardhanti nityaśaḥ | kṛṣṇastu sumanāsteṣāṃ vivardhayati sampadaḥ

"Therefore I think fate supreme and human effort useless: the sons of Dhritarashtra decline while the sons of Pritha grow day by day, and Krishna, well disposed to them, increases their prosperity.

Note on the text: Corrected न दैवं → तेन दैवं (misprint in Wikisource; the line is a syllable short and न reverses the sense of verse 35 — the critical edition reads tena daivaṃ). Removed a stray wiki quote mark ('). The first two lines are CE 2.43.34; the third is not in the critical edition (found in the vulgate recension; the CE's apparatus has it, reading durmanās, as line 2 of star passage 426 after 2.43.19). Wikisource's line marks here are displaced (37a, 37b, 38c).

Verse 38 (2.74.38)

so'haṃ śriyaṃ ca tāṃ dṛṣṭvā sabhāṃ tāṃ ca tathāvidhām | rakṣibhiścāvahāsaṃ taṃ paritapye yathā'gninā

"Having seen that fortune and that hall of such a kind, and the mockery of its guards, I am tormented as if by fire.

Verse 39 (2.74.39)

sa māmabhyanujānīhi mātulādya suduḥkhitam | amarṣaṃ ca samāviṣṭaṃ dhṛtarāṣṭre nivedaya

"So give me leave, uncle, for today I am deeply grieved; and tell Dhritarashtra of the resentment that has taken hold of me."

Note on the text: Restored from the critical edition (2.43.36ab): Wikisource prints only the second line, as a one-line verse marked 39a after displaced line marks (38a, 39b), and the request to tell Dhritarashtra lacks its opening; the first line स मामभ्यनुजानीहि मातुलाद्य सुदुःखितम् is supplied from the CE.
