Bhishma Becomes Commander of the Kaurava Army

With folded hands Duryodhana asks Bhishma to lead his army, citing the tale of the Brahmins who could not beat the Haihaya Kshatriyas until they chose a single commander, and comparing Bhishma to the foremost of every kind. Bhishma accepts on terms: the Pandavas are as dear to him as the Kauravas, he will not destroy them but will slay ten thousand of their warriors each day, and Karna must fight either before him or after him. Karna declares he will not fight while Bhishma lives. Bhishma is consecrated amid drums and conches and dreadful portents, and Duryodhana marches with him and his brothers to Kurukshetra and lays out a camp as splendid as Hastinapura.
