The Pandava Commanders Are Consecrated; Balarama Leaves on Pilgrimage

Janamejaya asks what Yudhishthira said on hearing that Bhishma had been consecrated for the sacrifice of battle. Yudhishthira tells his brothers and Vasudeva that they must fight the Grandsire first and asks for leaders for his seven armies; with Krishna's approval he consecrates Drupada, Virata, Satyaki, Dhrishtadyumna, Dhrishtaketu, Shikhandin and Sahadeva of Magadha, makes Dhrishtadyumna supreme commander and Arjuna commander over them all, with Krishna as Arjuna's charioteer. Balarama then arrives with the Vrishni chiefs, foretells a terrible slaughter, and explains that, since Krishna has sided wholly with Arjuna and he loves Bhima and Duryodhana alike as his pupils, he will not watch the Kurus perish but will go on pilgrimage to the sacred fords of the Sarasvati.
