Krishna on Human Effort and Fate
Krishna replies to Arjuna that every outcome rests on human effort and fate together: a well-tilled field still needs rain. He will do all that effort can, but cannot command fate. Duryodhana, egged on by Shakuni, Karna and Duhshasana, has cast off dharma and will not yield the kingdom short of death; Krishna has long known his wickedness and the divine purpose behind the coming war, and does not expect peace, yet he will carry out Yudhishthira's wishes in word and deed.
