Yudhishthira's Message for Kunti; Krishna Meets the Seers on the Road

Yudhishthira asks Krishna to comfort and embrace their mother Kunti, who raised them, suffered for them and was left weeping when they went to the forest, and to pay his respects to Dhritarashtra, Bhishma, Drona, Vidura and the other Kuru elders. Arjuna adds that if Duryodhana returns half the kingdom with honour all will be well, and otherwise he will make an end of the kshatriyas; Bhima roars with joy and the warriors tremble. On the road Krishna meets a company of seers headed by Narada, and Rama Jamadagnya (Parashurama) tells him they are going to the Kuru assembly to hear his words and will see him there. Ten great chariot-warriors, a thousand foot-soldiers and horsemen, and hundreds of servants follow Krishna.

who saved us, tormentor of foes, from the danger of Suyodhana, from that great peril of death so hard to cross, as a boat saves men from the ocean;

Note on the text: Corrected नो त्रायता- → नोऽत्रायता- (misprint in Wikisource; missing avagraha of the augmented अत्रायत, critical edition no 'trāyata) and संबाधुद्दुस्तरान् → संबाधाद्दुस्तरान् (misprint; ु for ा in the ablative संबाधात्). दुस्तरान्नौः (CE uttaran nauḥ) kept as a variant.

Ever since her marriage, tamer of foes, she has seen sorrows and insults in her husband's family, though she never deserved them, and she lives in grief.

Note on the text: Corrected निराकाराऽतदर्हा → निकारानतदर्हा (misprint in Wikisource; transposed aksharas turn निकारान् 'insults' into निराकारा 'formless'; critical edition nikārān atadarhā) and दुःखमश्रुते → दुःखमश्नुते (misprint; श्र for श्न, critical edition duḥkham aśnute).

pravrajanto'nudhāvantīṃ kṛpaṇāṃ putragṛddhinīm | rudatīmapahāyaināmagacchāma vayaṃ vanam

When we were going into exile she ran after us, pitiful and clinging to her sons; we left her weeping and went away to the forest.

Note on the text: This verse is the critical edition's 5.81.44 in a differently worded recension (both lines differ in form, same sense; kept).

Verse 9 (5.83.9)

सा नूनं म्रियते दुःखैः सा चेज्जीवति केशव । तथा पुत्राधिभिर्गाढमार्तामर्चय सत्कृत ॥

Note on the text: सा नूनं and आर्तामर्चय सत्कृत (CE na nūnaṃ, ārtā hy ānartasatkṛtā) kept as recension variants.

Note on the text: वाह्लिकम् (CE bāhlikam) kept: व/ब spelling of the name.

yathāvayo yathāsthānaṃ prapadyasva janārdana | viduraṃ ca mahāprājñaṃ kurūṇāṃ mantradhāriṇam | agādhabuddhiṃ marmajñaṃ svajethā madhusūdana

approach them according to their age and rank, Janardana. And embrace Vidura, Madhusudana — the very wise Vidura, keeper of the Kurus' counsel, of fathomless understanding, who knows the heart of every matter.

Note on the text: Line 1 is not in the critical edition's text (found in the vulgate recension); the critical edition records it in its apparatus as the star passage 5.81.47d*0385 (reading pūjayasva for प्रपद्यस्व). Lines 2–3 are the critical edition's 5.81.48 (मर्मज्ञं for dharmajñaṃ, kept as a variant); the alignment had left it unmatched. Removed a stray backtick and quote mark around line 1 (Wikisource formatting debris).

Eager to hear the sweet words you will speak in the assembly, we wish to hear the Kurus' replies as well, Madhava.

Note on the text: Speaker set to Rama Jamadagnya (Parashurama): his reply to Krishna (introduced by verse 34) fills the whole verse; Wikisource prints no heading until verse 43. Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); the critical edition records it in its apparatus as the star passage 5.81.69d*0389 (reading pratipattiṃ ca … keśava for प्रतिवाचश्च … माधव). Removed a stray backtick, closing quote mark and doubled danda (Wikisource formatting debris).
