Krishna Rescues His Teacher's Son

Chapter 44All chaptersChapter 46

Verse 1 (bhagavata.10.45.1)

śrī-śuka uvāca pitarāv upalabdhārthau viditvā puruṣottamaḥ mā bhūd iti nijāṁ māyāṁ tatāna jana-mohinīm

Sukadeva said: Realizing that His parents had now come to know the truth, the Supreme Person thought, "let this not be," and spread forth His own Yogamaya, which bewilders all people.

Verse 2 (bhagavata.10.45.2)

uvāca pitarāv etya sāgrajaḥ sātvatarṣabhaḥ praśrayāvanataḥ prīṇann amba tāteti sādaram

Approaching His parents, together with His elder brother, the foremost of the Satvatas bowed humbly and, gladdening their hearts, addressed them with reverence, saying "Mother," "Father."

Verse 3 (bhagavata.10.45.3)

nāsmatto yuvayos tāta nityotkaṇṭhitayor api bālya-paugaṇḍa-kaiśorāḥ putrābhyām abhavan kvacit

[Krishna said:] Dear Father, because of Us, though you were forever anxious, you never had from your two sons the joy of Our infancy, boyhood, or adolescence.

Verse 4 (bhagavata.10.45.4)

na labdho daiva-hatayor vāso nau bhavad-antike yāṁ bālāḥ pitṛ-geha-sthā vindante lālitā mudam

Struck by fate, We never had the chance to dwell near you — that happiness which children, cherished in their father's own house, come to know.

Verse 5 (bhagavata.10.45.5)

sarvārtha-sambhavo deho janitaḥ poṣito yataḥ na tayor yāti nirveśaṁ pitror martyaḥ śatāyuṣā

This body, by which all of one's purposes are accomplished, is begotten and nourished by them alone; even living a hundred years, no mortal can ever repay that debt to his parents.

Verse 6 (bhagavata.10.45.6)

yas tayor ātmajaḥ kalpa ātmanā ca dhanena ca vṛttiṁ na dadyāt taṁ pretya sva-māṁsaṁ khādayanti hi

A capable son who fails to support his parents with his own body and wealth is made, after death, to eat his own flesh.

Verse 7 (bhagavata.10.45.7)

mātaraṁ pitaraṁ vṛddhaṁ bhāryāṁ sādhvīṁ sutam śiśum guruṁ vipraṁ prapannaṁ ca kalpo ’bibhrac chvasan-mṛtaḥ

One who fails to sustain his aged mother and father, his chaste wife, his infant child, his teacher, a brahmana, or one who has come to him for shelter — such a person, though still breathing, is as good as dead.

Verse 8 (bhagavata.10.45.8)

tan nāv akalpayoḥ kaṁsān nityam udvigna-cetasoḥ mogham ete vyatikrāntā divasā vām anarcatoḥ

Thus, unable to serve you, Our minds ever troubled by fear of Kamsa — these days have slipped past Us in vain, without Our ever honoring the two of you.

Verse 9 (bhagavata.10.45.9)

tat kṣantum arhathas tāta mātar nau para-tantrayoḥ akurvator vāṁ śuśrūṣāṁ kliṣṭayor durhṛdā bhṛśam

Please forgive Us for this, dear Father, dear Mother — We who were not Our own masters, and who, greatly tormented by that evil-hearted man, could render you no service.

Verse 10 (bhagavata.10.45.10)

śrī-śuka uvāca iti māyā-manuṣyasya harer viśvātmano girā mohitāv aṅkam āropya pariṣvajyāpatur mudam

Sukadeva said: Thus beguiled by the words of Hari, the Soul of the universe who through His own maya had taken on the appearance of a man, His parents joyfully lifted Him onto their laps and embraced Him.

Verse 11 (bhagavata.10.45.11)

siñcantāv aśru-dhārābhiḥ sneha-pāśena cāvṛtau na kiñcid ūcatū rājan bāṣpa-kaṇṭhau vimohitau

Bathing Him with streams of tears, bound fast by the cords of affection, they, O King, overcome and their throats choked with tears, could say nothing at all.

Verse 12 (bhagavata.10.45.12)

evam āśvāsya pitarau bhagavān devakī-sutaḥ mātāmahaṁ tūgrasenaṁ yadūnām akaron ṇṛpam

Having thus comforted His parents, Bhagavan, the son of Devaki, then installed His maternal grandfather Ugrasena as king over the Yadus.

Verse 13 (bhagavata.10.45.13)

āha cāsmān mahā-rāja prajāś cājñaptum arhasi yayāti-śāpād yadubhir nāsitavyaṁ nṛpāsane

And He said: O great king, you should indeed command Us, who are your subjects; for by the curse of Yayati, no Yadu may ever sit upon the royal throne.

Verse 14 (bhagavata.10.45.14)

mayi bhṛtya upāsīne bhavato vibudhādayaḥ baliṁ haranty avanatāḥ kim utānye narādhipāḥ

When I Myself remain here at your side as your servant, the gods and others will bow low and bring you tribute — how much more, then, will the other kings of men?

Verse 15 (bhagavata.10.45.15)

sarvān svān jñati-sambandhān digbhyaḥ kaṁsa-bhayākulān yadu-vṛṣṇy-andhaka-madhu dāśārha-kukurādikān

All His own kinsmen and relations, scattered to every direction, distraught with fear of Kamsa — the Yadus, Vrishnis, Andhakas, Madhus, Dasharhas, Kukuras and the rest —

Verse 16 (bhagavata.10.45.16)

sabhājitān samāśvāsya videśāvāsa-karśitān nyavāsayat sva-geheṣu vittaiḥ santarpya viśva-kṛt

— honoring and comforting them all, worn out as they were from living in foreign lands, the maker of the universe resettled them in their own homes, gratifying them with gifts of wealth.

Verse 17 (bhagavata.10.45.17)

kṛṣṇa-saṅkarṣaṇa-bhujair guptā labdha-manorathāḥ gṛheṣu remire siddhāḥ kṛṣṇa-rāma-gata-jvarāḥ

Protected now by the arms of Krishna and Sankarshana, their every desire fulfilled, they lived on in their homes in perfect happiness, the fever of their former distress dispelled by the mere presence of Krishna and Rama.

Verse 18 (bhagavata.10.45.18)

vīkṣanto ’har ahaḥ prītā mukunda-vadanāmbujam nityaṁ pramuditaṁ śrīmat sa-daya-smita-vīkṣaṇam

— gazing day after day, with love, upon Mukunda's lotus face, ever joyful and radiant, its glance filled with compassion and gentle smiles.

Verse 19 (bhagavata.10.45.19)

tatra pravayaso ’py āsan yuvāno ’ti-balaujasaḥ pibanto ’kṣair mukundasya mukhāmbuja-sudhāṁ muhuḥ

There, even the elderly appeared youthful, filled with great strength and vigor, for they drank again and again, with their very eyes, the nectar of Mukunda's lotus face.

Verse 20 (bhagavata.10.45.20)

atha nandaṁ samasādya bhagavān devakī-sutaḥ saṅkarṣaṇaś ca rājendra pariṣvajyedam ūcatuḥ

Then, O best of kings, Bhagavan, the son of Devaki, together with Sankarshana, went to Nanda, embraced him, and spoke these words.

Verse 21 (bhagavata.10.45.21)

pitar yuvābhyāṁ snigdhābhyāṁ poṣitau lālitau bhṛśam pitror abhyadhikā prītir ātmajeṣv ātmano ’pi hi

[They said:] O Father, out of your deep affection, you and mother have raised and cherished Us so tenderly! Indeed, parents' love for their children exceeds even their love for their own selves.

Verse 22 (bhagavata.10.45.22)

sa pitā sā ca jananī yau puṣṇītāṁ sva-putra-vat śiśūn bandhubhir utsṛṣṭān akalpaiḥ poṣa-rakṣaṇe

He alone is a true father, and she a true mother, who nurture as their own the children left behind by kin unable to sustain and protect them.

Verse 23 (bhagavata.10.45.23)

yāta yūyaṁ vrajaṁn tāta vayaṁ ca sneha-duḥkhitān jñātīn vo draṣṭum eṣyāmo vidhāya suhṛdāṁ sukham

Now return to Vraja, dear Father; and once We have brought happiness to Our well-wishing friends there, We shall come to see all of you, Our own kin, grieving for Us as you do out of love.

Verse 24 (bhagavata.10.45.24)

evaṁ sāntvayya bhagavān nandaṁ sa-vrajam acyutaḥ vāso-’laṅkāra-kupyādyair arhayām āsa sādaram

Having thus consoled Nanda and all the people of Vraja, the infallible Lord honored them with respect, presenting them with gifts of clothing, ornaments, household vessels and the like.

Verse 25 (bhagavata.10.45.25)

ity uktas tau pariṣvajya nandaḥ praṇaya-vihvalaḥ pūrayann aśrubhir netre saha gopair vrajaṁ yayau

Thus addressed, Nanda, overcome with love, embraced the two of Them, his eyes filling with tears, and then set out for Vraja together with the cowherds.

Verse 26 (bhagavata.10.45.26)

atha śūra-suto rājan putrayoḥ samakārayat purodhasā brāhmaṇaiś ca yathāvad dvija-saṁskṛtim

Then, O King, Shura's son Vasudeva had his two sons undergo the proper twice-born sacraments, performed by the family priest and other brahmanas.

Verse 27 (bhagavata.10.45.27)

tebhyo ’dād dakṣiṇā gāvo rukma-mālāḥ sv-alaṅkṛtāḥ sv-alaṅkṛtebhyaḥ sampūjya sa-vatsāḥ kṣauma-mālinīḥ

To them he gave, as gifts, cows finely adorned with golden garlands; and having honored those richly adorned brahmanas with worship, he gave cows together with their calves, hung about with garlands of fine linen.

Verse 28 (bhagavata.10.45.28)

yāḥ kṛṣṇa-rāma-janmarkṣe mano-dattā mahā-matiḥ tāś cādadād anusmṛtya kaṁsenādharmato hṛtāḥ

And the noble-minded Vasudeva, remembering the cows he had mentally vowed at the very hour of Krishna's and Rama's birth — cows which Kamsa had wrongfully seized — now recovered those very cows as well, and gave them in charity.

Verse 29 (bhagavata.10.45.29)

tataś ca labdha-saṁskārau dvijatvaṁ prāpya su-vratau gargād yadu-kulācāryād gāyatraṁ vratam āsthitau

Then, having received these sacraments and thus attained the status of the twice-born, the two of Them, steadfast in Their vows, undertook the Gayatri vow under Garga, the family preceptor of the Yadus.

Verse 30 (bhagavata.10.45.30)

prabhavau sarva-vidyānāṁ sarva-jñau jagad-īśvarau nānya-siddhāmalaṁ jñānaṁ gūhamānau narehitaiḥ

The two Lords of the universe, the very source of all branches of learning, all-knowing though They were, kept Their own self-perfect and unblemished knowledge hidden beneath the guise of ordinary human conduct.

Verse 31 (bhagavata.10.45.31)

atho gurukule vāsam icchantāv upajagmatuḥ kāśyaṁ sāndīpaniṁ nāma hy avanti-pura-vāsinam

Then, desiring to dwell at a teacher's house, the two of Them approached one named Sandipani, a native of Kashi who lived in the city of Avanti.

Verse 32 (bhagavata.10.45.32)

yathopasādya tau dāntau gurau vṛttim aninditām grāhayantāv upetau sma bhaktyā devam ivādṛtau

Having thus approached him, the two self-controlled Ones took up unblemished service to their teacher, and worshiped him with devotion, as though he were the Lord Himself.

Verse 33 (bhagavata.10.45.33)

tayor dvija-varas tuṣṭaḥ śuddha-bhāvānuvṛttibhiḥ provāca vedān akhilān sāṅgopaniṣado guruḥ

Pleased with Their pure and dutiful conduct, that best of brahmanas, their guru, taught the two of Them the entire body of the Vedas, together with their auxiliary limbs and the Upanishads.

Verse 34 (bhagavata.10.45.34)

sa-rahasyaṁ dhanur-vedaṁ dharmān nyāya-pathāṁs tathā tathā cānvīkṣikīṁ vidyāṁ rāja-nītiṁ ca ṣaḍ-vidhām

He likewise taught Them the Dhanurveda with its secret lore, the codes of dharma and the paths of logic, the science of philosophical inquiry, and the sixfold science of statecraft.

Verse 35 (bhagavata.10.45.35)

sarvaṁ nara-vara-śreṣṭhau sarva-vidyā-pravartakau sakṛn nigada-mātreṇa tau sañjagṛhatur nṛpa

O King, those two best among men, Themselves the very originators of all branches of learning, grasped everything completely merely upon hearing it explained a single time.

Verse 36 (bhagavata.10.45.36)

aho-rātraiś catuḥ-ṣaṣṭyā saṁyattau tāvatīḥ kalāḥ guru-dakṣiṇayācāryaṁ chandayām āsatur nṛpa

In sixty-four days and nights They mastered just as many arts, and then, O King, They asked their teacher to name whatever he desired as his guru-dakshina.

Verse 37 (bhagavata.10.45.37)

dvijas tayos taṁ mahimānam adbhutaṁ saṁlokṣya rājann ati-mānusīṁ matim sammantrya patnyā sa mahārṇave mṛtaṁ bālaṁ prabhāse varayāṁ babhūva ha

O King, that brahmana, having witnessed their wondrous glory and superhuman intelligence, took counsel with his wife, and chose as his fee the return of his young son, who had died in the great ocean at Prabhasa.

Verse 38 (bhagavata.10.45.38)

tethety athāruhya mahā-rathau rathaṁ prabhāsam āsādya duranta-vikramau velām upavrajya niṣīdatuḥ kṣanaṁ sindhur viditvārhanam āharat tayoḥ

"So be it," said those two mighty charioteers of boundless valor; mounting Their chariot, They came to Prabhasa, went up to the shore and sat there a moment — whereupon the ocean, recognizing Them, brought forward offerings for the two of Them.

Verse 39 (bhagavata.10.45.39)

tam āha bhagavān āśu guru-putraḥ pradīyatām yo ’sāv iha tvayā grasto bālako mahatormiṇā

Bhagavan said to him at once: Let the guru's son be restored without delay — the boy you swallowed here beneath your mighty waves.

Verse 40 (bhagavata.10.45.40)

śrī-samudra uvāca na cāhārṣam ahaṁ deva daityaḥ pañcajano mahān antar-jala-caraḥ kṛṣṇa śaṅkha-rūpa-dharo ’suraḥ

Sri Samudra said: O Lord, it was not I who took him; rather, O Krishna, a great demon named Panchajana, who dwells within the water in the form of a conch shell.

Verse 41 (bhagavata.10.45.41)

āste tenāhṛto nūnaṁ tac chrutvā satvaraṁ prabhuḥ jalam āviśya taṁ hatvā nāpaśyad udare ’rbhakam

"Surely he is being held by that very demon" — hearing this, the Lord swiftly entered the water and slew him, yet did not find the boy within his belly.

Verse 42 (bhagavata.10.45.42)

tad-aṅga-prabhavaṁ śaṅkham ādāya ratham āgamat tataḥ saṁyamanīṁ nāma yamasya dayitāṁ purīm

Taking up the conch that had formed from that demon's own body, He returned to the chariot; and then He set out for the city called Samyamani, the beloved capital of Yama.

Verse 43 (bhagavata.10.45.43)

gatvā janārdanaḥ śaṅkhaṁ pradadhmau sa-halāyudhaḥ śaṅkha-nirhrādam ākarṇya prajā-saṁyamano yamaḥ

Arriving there, Janardana, together with Halayudha, sounded that conch; and Yama, the restrainer of all creatures, hearing that conch's blast —

Verse 44 (bhagavata.10.45.44)

tayoḥ saparyāṁ mahatīṁ cakre bhakty-upabṛṁhitām uvācāvanataḥ kṛṣṇaṁ sarva-bhūtāśayālayam līlā-manuṣyayor viṣṇo yuvayoḥ karavāma kim

— performed a great and devoted worship of the two of Them, and, bowing before Krishna, the very abode within every being's heart, said: O Vishnu, You two are here enacting this human pastime — what may I do for You?

Verse 45 (bhagavata.10.45.45)

śrī-bhagavān uvāca guru-putram ihānītaṁ nija-karma-nibandhanam ānayasva mahā-rāja mac-chāsana-puraskṛtaḥ

Sri Bhagavan said: O great king, in obedience to My command, bring forth the guru's son, who was brought here bound by the fruit of his own past deed.

Verse 46 (bhagavata.10.45.46)

tatheti tenopānītaṁ guru-putraṁ yadūttamau dattvā sva-gurave bhūyo vṛṇīṣveti tam ūcatuḥ

"So be it," said Yama, and brought forth the guru's son; and the two best of the Yadus, restoring him to their own teacher, said to him, "Now choose once more."

Verse 47 (bhagavata.10.45.47)

śrī-gurur uvāca samyak sampādito vatsa bhavadbhyāṁ guru-niṣkrayaḥ ko nu yuṣmad-vidha-guroḥ kāmānām avaśiṣyate

Sri Guru said: My children, you two have fully discharged the disciple's debt to your teacher — indeed, what desire could possibly remain for a guru blessed with disciples such as you?

Verse 48 (bhagavata.10.45.48)

gacchataṁ sva-gṛhaṁ vīrau kīrtir vām astu pāvanī chandāṁsy ayāta-yāmāni bhavantv iha paratra ca

Go now, O heroes, to your own home; may your fame be ever purifying to the world, and may the Vedic hymns remain fresh and undecaying in your minds, both in this life and beyond.

Verse 49 (bhagavata.10.45.49)

guruṇaivam anujñātau rathenānila-raṁhasā āyātau sva-puraṁ tāta parjanya-ninadena vai

Thus given leave by their teacher, dear child, the two of Them returned to their own city upon a chariot swift as the wind and rumbling like a thundercloud.

Verse 50 (bhagavata.10.45.50)

samanandan prajāḥ sarvā dṛṣṭvā rāma-janārdanau apaśyantyo bahv ahāni naṣṭa-labdha-dhanā iva

All the citizens, having gone many days without seeing them, rejoiced at the sight of Rama and Janardana — like those who, having lost their wealth, have found it again.
