Skandha 10 · Chapter 46
Uddhava Visits Vrindavana
Verse 1 (bhagavata.10.46.1)
śrī-śuka uvāca vṛṣṇīnāṁ pravaro mantrī kṛṣṇasya dayitaḥ sakhā śiṣyo bṛhaspateḥ sākṣād uddhavo buddhi-sattamaḥ
Shri Shukadeva said: Uddhava was the foremost counselor among the Vrishnis, the beloved friend of Krishna, and a direct disciple of Brihaspati — the wisest of the wise.
Verse 2 (bhagavata.10.46.2)
tam āha bhagavān preṣṭhaṁ bhaktam ekāntinaṁ kvacit gṛhītvā pāṇinā pāṇiṁ prapannārti-haro hariḥ
One day Bhagavan Hari, who removes the suffering of those who take refuge in Him, took the hand of His dearest and most devoted friend Uddhava in His own and spoke to him.
Verse 3 (bhagavata.10.46.3)
gacchoddhava vrajaṁ saumya pitror nau prītim āvaha gopīnāṁ mad-viyogādhiṁ mat-sandeśair vimocaya
Gentle Uddhava, go to Vraja and bring joy to My parents. And through My message, free the gopis from the anguish of separation from Me.
Verse 4 (bhagavata.10.46.4)
tā man-manaskā mat-prāṇā mat-arthe tyakta-daihikāḥ mām eva dayitaṁ preṣṭham ātmānaṁ manasā gatāḥ ye tyakta-loka-dharmāś ca mad-arthe tān bibharmy aham
Their minds dwell in Me alone, and I am their very life-breath; for My sake they have given up all bodily comforts. They have fixed their thoughts on Me alone as their beloved, their dearest, their very self. Those who have abandoned even worldly duty for My sake — I Myself sustain them.
Verse 5 (bhagavata.10.46.5)
mayi tāḥ preyasāṁ preṣṭhe dūra-sthe gokula-striyaḥ smarantyo ’ṅga vimuhyanti virahautkaṇṭhya-vihvalāḥ
My dear Uddhava, though I am the dearest of the dear to those women of Gokula, I remain far away; remembering Me, they grow faint, overwhelmed by the anguish of separation.
Verse 6 (bhagavata.10.46.6)
dhārayanty ati-kṛcchreṇa prāyaḥ prāṇān kathañcana pratyāgamana-sandeśair ballavyo me mad-ātmikāḥ
My cowherd girls, whose very selves are absorbed in Me, endure with the greatest difficulty, sustaining their lives only through the promise of My return.
Verse 7 (bhagavata.10.46.7)
śrī-śuka uvāca ity ukta uddhavo rājan sandeśaṁ bhartur ādṛtaḥ ādāya ratham āruhya prayayau nanda-gokulam
Shukadeva said: O King, thus instructed, Uddhava respectfully received his master's message, mounted his chariot, and set out for Nanda's Gokula.
Verse 8 (bhagavata.10.46.8)
prāpto nanda-vrajaṁ śrīmān nimlocati vibhāvasau channa-yānaḥ praviśatāṁ paśūnāṁ khura-reṇubhiḥ
The fortunate Uddhava arrived at Nanda's Vraja just as the sun was setting, his chariot veiled by the dust raised by the hooves of the animals returning home.
Verse 9 (bhagavata.10.46.9)
vāsitārthe ’bhiyudhyadbhir nāditaṁ śuśmibhir vṛṣaiḥ dhāvantībhiś ca vāsrābhir udho-bhāraiḥ sva-vatsakān
There, rutting bulls bellowed as they fought one another over the cows, while cows heavy with milk ran after their calves.
Verse 10 (bhagavata.10.46.10)
itas tato vilaṅghadbhir go-vatsair maṇḍitaṁ sitaiḥ go-doha-śabdābhiravaṁ veṇūnāṁ niḥsvanena ca
White calves leapt about here and there, adding to the beauty of the place, which echoed with the sounds of milking and the notes of flutes.
Verse 11 (bhagavata.10.46.11)
gāyantībhiś ca karmāṇi śubhāni bala-kṛṣṇayoḥ sv-alaṅkṛtābhir gopībhir gopaiś ca su-virājitam
Beautifully adorned gopis and gopas sang the auspicious deeds of Balarama and Krishna, lending the place still greater splendor.
Verse 12 (bhagavata.10.46.12)
agny-arkātithi-go-vipra- pitṛ-devārcanānvitaiḥ dhūpa-dīpaiś ca mālyaiś ca gopāvāsair mano-ramam
The cowherds' homes, filled with the worship of fire, sun, guests, cows, brahmanas, ancestors and gods, and adorned with incense, lamps and garlands, appeared utterly charming.
Verse 13 (bhagavata.10.46.13)
sarvataḥ puṣpita-vanaṁ dvijāli-kula-nāditam haṁsa-kāraṇḍavākīrṇaiḥ padma-ṣaṇḍaiś ca maṇḍitam
On every side the flowering forest resounded with flocks of birds and swarms of bees, and was adorned with clusters of lotuses crowded with swans and karandava ducks.
Verse 14 (bhagavata.10.46.14)
tam āgataṁ samāgamya kṛṣṇasyānucaraṁ priyam nandaḥ prītaḥ pariṣvajya vāsudeva-dhiyārcayat
Coming forward to meet Krishna's beloved attendant, Nanda joyfully embraced him and, regarding him as Vasudeva Himself, worshiped him.
Verse 15 (bhagavata.10.46.15)
bhojitaṁ paramānnena saṁviṣṭaṁ kaśipau sukham gata-śramaṁ paryapṛcchat pāda-saṁvāhanādibhiḥ
Having fed him the finest food, seated him comfortably on a couch, and relieved his fatigue with a foot massage and other services, Nanda then questioned him.
Verse 16 (bhagavata.10.46.16)
kaccid aṅga mahā-bhāga sakhā naḥ śūra-nandanaḥ āste kuśaly apatyādyair yukto muktaḥ suhṛd-vrataḥ
My most fortunate friend, tell me — does the son of Shura, our companion, fare well? Is he now free from bondage, reunited with his children and kin, and still true to his devotion to his friends?
Verse 17 (bhagavata.10.46.17)
diṣṭyā kaṁso hataḥ pāpaḥ sānugaḥ svena pāpmanā sādhūnāṁ dharma-śīlānāṁ yadūnāṁ dveṣṭi yaḥ sadā
It is fortunate indeed that the sinful Kamsa, together with his followers, has been slain by his own sins — he who always hated the righteous, virtuous Yadus.
Verse 18 (bhagavata.10.46.18)
api smarati naḥ kṛṣṇo mātaraṁ suhṛdaḥ sakhīn gopān vrajaṁ cātma-nāthaṁ gāvo vṛndāvanaṁ girim
Does Krishna remember us — His mother, His well-wishers, His friends? Does He remember the cowherds, Vraja of which He is the very lord, the cows, Vrindavana, and the hill Govardhana?
Verse 19 (bhagavata.10.46.19)
apy āyāsyati govindaḥ sva-janān sakṛd īkṣitum tarhi drakṣyāma tad-vaktraṁ su-nasaṁ su-smitekṣaṇam
Will Govinda ever come, even once, to look upon His own people? If He does, we shall behold that face of His, with its lovely nose and smiling eyes.
Verse 20 (bhagavata.10.46.20)
dāvāgner vāta-varṣāc ca vṛṣa-sarpāc ca rakṣitāḥ duratyayebhyo mṛtyubhyaḥ kṛṣṇena su-mahātmanā
It was that great soul Krishna who protected us from the forest fire, from storm and flood, and from the bull-demon and the serpent — from otherwise inescapable deaths.
Verse 21 (bhagavata.10.46.21)
smaratāṁ kṛṣṇa-vīryāṇi līlāpāṅga-nirīkṣitam hasitaṁ bhāṣitaṁ cāṅga sarvā naḥ śithilāḥ kriyāḥ
Dear Uddhava, when we remember Krishna's exploits, His playful sidelong glances, His smile and His words, all our daily tasks grow slack in our hands.
Verse 22 (bhagavata.10.46.22)
saric-chaila-vanoddeśān mukunda-pada-bhūṣitān ākrīḍān īkṣyamāṇānāṁ mano yāti tad-ātmatām
When we gaze upon the rivers, hills and forest groves where He sported — places graced by the imprint of Mukunda's feet — our minds become one with Him.
Verse 23 (bhagavata.10.46.23)
manye kṛṣṇaṁ ca rāmaṁ ca prāptāv iha surottamau surāṇāṁ mahad-arthāya gargasya vacanaṁ yathā
I believe that Krishna and Rama are the very best among the gods, who have come here to fulfill some great purpose of the celestials — just as Garga once foretold.
Verse 24 (bhagavata.10.46.24)
kaṁsaṁ nāgāyuta-prāṇaṁ mallau gaja-patiṁ yathā avadhiṣṭāṁ līlayaiva paśūn iva mṛgādhipaḥ
Just as a lion easily kills lesser animals, so these two, in mere sport, slew Kamsa — whose strength equaled ten thousand elephants — along with the wrestlers and the great tusker.
Verse 25 (bhagavata.10.46.25)
tāla-trayaṁ mahā-sāraṁ dhanur yaṣṭim ivebha-rāṭ babhañjaikena hastena saptāham adadhād girim
As easily as a great elephant snaps a walking-stick, He broke a mighty bow three palm-trees long with a single hand, and held up a mountain for seven days with that same one hand.
Verse 26 (bhagavata.10.46.26)
pralambo dhenuko ’riṣṭas tṛṇāvarto bakādayaḥ daityāḥ surāsura-jito hatā yeneha līlayā
Even demons like Pralamba, Dhenuka, Arishta, Trinavarta and Baka — who had conquered both gods and demons — were slain here by Him, in mere play.
Verse 27 (bhagavata.10.46.27)
śrī-śuka uvāca iti saṁsmṛtya saṁsmṛtya nandaḥ kṛṣṇānurakta-dhīḥ aty-utkaṇṭho ’bhavat tūṣṇīṁ prema-prasara-vihvalaḥ
Shukadeva said: Recalling all this again and again, Nanda, his heart wholly devoted to Krishna, grew overcome with longing and fell silent, overwhelmed by the flood of his love.
Verse 28 (bhagavata.10.46.28)
yaśodā varṇyamānāni putrasya caritāni ca śṛṇvanty aśrūṇy avāsrākṣīt sneha-snuta-payodharā
As she listened to her son's deeds being recounted, Yashoda's eyes overflowed with tears, and out of tenderness her breasts flowed with milk.
Verse 29 (bhagavata.10.46.29)
tayor itthaṁ bhagavati kṛṣṇe nanda-yaśodayoḥ vīkṣyānurāgaṁ paramaṁ nandam āhoddhavo mudā
Seeing such supreme love that Nanda and Yashoda bore for Bhagavan Krishna, Uddhava spoke to Nanda with joy in his heart.
Verse 30 (bhagavata.10.46.30)
śrī-uddhava uvāca yuvāṁ ślāghyatamau nūnaṁ dehinām iha māna-da nārāyaṇe ’khila-gurau yat kṛtā matir īdṛśī
Shri Uddhava said: O gracious Nanda, truly you two are the most praiseworthy of all beings in this world, for you have set your hearts so deeply on Narayana, the teacher of all.
Verse 31 (bhagavata.10.46.31)
etau hi viśvasya ca bīja-yonī rāmo mukundaḥ puruṣaḥ pradhānam anvīya bhūteṣu vilakṣaṇasya jñānasya ceśāta imau purāṇau
Rama and Mukunda alone are the seed and womb of this universe — the Purusha and His primal nature. Entering into every being, they govern each one's distinct awareness; these two are the eternal Supreme Lord.
Verse 32 (bhagavata.10.46.32)
yasmin janaḥ prāṇa-viyoga-kāle kṣanaṁ samāveśya mano ’viśuddham nirhṛtya karmāśayam āśu yāti parāṁ gatiṁ brahma-mayo ’rka-varṇaḥ
Simply by fixing the mind on Him for a moment at the time of death — even an impure mind — a person burns away every seed of accumulated karma and at once attains the supreme destination, becoming radiant as the sun and one with the Absolute.
Verse 33 (bhagavata.10.46.33)
tasmin bhavantāv akhilātma-hetau nārāyaṇe kāraṇa-martya-mūrtau bhāvaṁ vidhattāṁ nitarāṁ mahātman kiṁ vāvaśiṣṭaṁ yuvayoḥ su-kṛtyam
O great soul, toward that very Narayana — the cause of every self, who has taken on a mortal form of His own will — you two hold such deep devotion. What further meritorious deed, then, remains for either of you to achieve?
Verse 34 (bhagavata.10.46.34)
āgamiṣyaty adīrgheṇa kālena vrajam acyutaḥ priyaṁ vidhāsyate pitror bhagavān sātvatāṁ patiḥ
Infallible Bhagavan, the Lord of the Satvatas, will return to Vraja before long and bring joy to His parents.
Verse 35 (bhagavata.10.46.35)
hatvā kaṁsaṁ raṅga-madhye pratīpaṁ sarva-sātvatām yad āha vaḥ samāgatya kṛṣṇaḥ satyaṁ karoti tat
Having slain Kamsa, the enemy of all the Satvatas, in the wrestling arena, Krishna will surely now keep the promise He made to you, and return.
Verse 36 (bhagavata.10.46.36)
mā khidyataṁ mahā-bhāgau drakṣyathaḥ kṛṣṇam antike antar hṛdi sa bhūtānām āste jyotir ivaidhasi
O most fortunate ones, do not grieve — you will soon see Krishna close at hand. He dwells within the heart of every being, just as fire lies hidden within wood.
Verse 37 (bhagavata.10.46.37)
na hy asyāsti priyaḥ kaścin nāpriyo vāsty amāninaḥ nottamo nādhamo vāpi sa-mānasyāsamo ’pi vā
For Him, who is free from all pride, no one is dear and no one is disliked; none is high, none is low. Though He treats all alike, He Himself is like no one else.
Verse 38 (bhagavata.10.46.38)
na mātā na pitā tasya na bhāryā na sutādayaḥ nātmīyo na paraś cāpi na deho janma eva ca
He has no mother, no father, no wife, no children; none is His own, and none is foreign to Him; He has no material body, and no birth.
Verse 39 (bhagavata.10.46.39)
na cāsya karma vā loke sad-asan-miśra-yoniṣu krīḍārthaṁ so ’pi sādhūnāṁ paritrāṇāya kalpate
Nor does He have any karma binding Him to take birth in pure, impure or mixed species of life in this world; yet, for the sake of His pastimes and to protect the saintly, He appears.
Verse 40 (bhagavata.10.46.40)
sattvaṁ rajas tama iti bhajate nirguṇo guṇān krīḍann atīto ’pi guṇaiḥ sṛjaty avan hanty ajaḥ
Though beyond the three modes — goodness, passion and ignorance — He, the unqualified one, takes them up as His own sport. Thus, transcending the modes even while playing with them, the unborn Lord creates, sustains and destroys.
Verse 41 (bhagavata.10.46.41)
yathā bhramarikā-dṛṣṭyā bhrāmyatīva mahīyate citte kartari tatrātmā kartevāhaṁ-dhiyā smṛtaḥ
Just as a person spinning around perceives, through illusion, the earth itself to be whirling, so it is the mind alone that truly acts — yet through the sense of "I," the self is mistakenly thought to be the doer.
Verse 42 (bhagavata.10.46.42)
yuvayor eva naivāyam ātmajo bhagavān hariḥ sarveṣām ātmajo hy ātmā pitā mātā sa īśvaraḥ
Bhagavan Hari is not merely your son alone — He, the Lord, is the son, the very self, the father and the mother of all beings.
Verse 43 (bhagavata.10.46.43)
dṛṣṭaṁ śrutaṁ bhūta-bhavad-bhaviṣyat sthāsnuś cariṣṇur mahad alpakaṁ ca vinācyutād vastu tarāṁ na vācyaṁ sa eva sarvaṁ paramātma-bhūtaḥ
Whatever is seen or heard, whatever exists in the past, present or future, whatever is fixed or moving, great or small — nothing whatever can rightly be spoken of apart from Achyuta, for He alone, as the Supreme Soul, is everything.
Verse 44 (bhagavata.10.46.44)
evaṁ niśā sā bruvator vyatītā nandasya kṛṣṇānucarasya rājan gopyaḥ samutthāya nirūpya dīpān vāstūn samabhyarcya daudhīny amanthun
O King, thus the night passed as Nanda conversed with Krishna's attendant Uddhava. The gopis rose, lit their lamps, performed the worship of their homes, and began churning the curd.
Verse 45 (bhagavata.10.46.45)
tā dīpa-dīptair maṇibhir virejū rajjūr vikarṣad-bhuja-kaṅkaṇa-srajaḥ calan-nitamba-stana-hāra-kuṇḍala- tviṣat-kapolāruṇa-kuṅkumānanāḥ
As they pulled the churning rope, the bangles and garlands on their arms glowed, their jewels shimmering in the lamplight; their hips and breasts swayed with their moving necklaces, and their kumkum-reddened cheeks glowed with the reflected light of their earrings.
Verse 46 (bhagavata.10.46.46)
udgāyatīnām aravinda-locanaṁ vrajāṅganānāṁ divam aspṛśad dhvaniḥ dadhnaś ca nirmanthana-śabda-miśrito nirasyate yena diśām amaṅgalam
As the women of Vraja sang aloud the glories of lotus-eyed Krishna, their voices, mingling with the sound of the churning, rose to touch the sky — a sound that dispelled all inauspiciousness from every direction.
Verse 47 (bhagavata.10.46.47)
bhagavaty udite sūrye nanda-dvāri vrajaukasaḥ dṛṣṭvā rathaṁ śātakaumbhaṁ kasyāyam iti cābruvan
When the radiant sun had risen, the people of Vraja saw a golden chariot at Nanda's doorway and asked, "Whose chariot is this?"
Verse 48 (bhagavata.10.46.48)
akrūra āgataḥ kiṁ vā yaḥ kaṁsasyārtha-sādhakaḥ yena nīto madhu-purīṁ kṛṣṇaḥ kamala-locanaḥ
"Could it be Akrura has come — the one who, fulfilling Kamsa's purpose, took lotus-eyed Krishna away to Mathura?
Verse 49 (bhagavata.10.46.49)
kiṁ sādhayiṣyaty asmābhir bhartuḥ prītasya niṣkṛtim tataḥ strīṇāṁ vadantīnām uddhavo ’gāt kṛtāhnikaḥ
"Does he now mean to use us to perform the final rites for his pleased master?" As the women were saying this among themselves, Uddhava arrived, having completed his morning observances.
