The Deliverance of Mucukunda

Chapter 50All chaptersChapter 52

Verse 1 (bhagavata.10.51.1)

śrī-śuka uvāca taṁ vilokya viniṣkrāntam ujjihānam ivoḍupam darśanīyatamaṁ śyāmaṁ pīta-kauśeya-vāsasam

Kalayavana saw Krishna coming out of the city like the rising moon — supremely beautiful to behold, dark of hue, and clad in a garment of yellow silk.

Verse 2 (bhagavata.10.51.2)

śrīvatsa-vakṣasaṁ bhrājat kaustubhāmukta-kandharam pṛthu-dīrgha-catur-bāhuṁ nava-kañjāruṇekṣaṇam

He bore the mark of Shrivatsa upon His chest, and His neck was adorned with the radiant Kaustubha gem; His four arms were broad and long, and His eyes were reddish like a freshly opened lotus.

Verse 3 (bhagavata.10.51.3)

nitya-pramuditaṁ śrīmat su-kapolaṁ śuci-smitam mukhāravindaṁ bibhrāṇaṁ sphuran-makara-kuṇḍalam

His lotus-like face, ever joyous and glowing, with beautiful cheeks and a radiant smile, bore glittering shark-shaped earrings.

Verse 4 (bhagavata.10.51.4)

vāsudevo hy ayam iti pumān śrīvatsa-lāñchanaḥ catur-bhujo ’ravindākṣo vana-māly ati-sundaraḥ

‘This must indeed be Vasudeva,’ thought the barbarian, ‘for He bears the mark of Shrivatsa, has four arms, lotus eyes, and is exceedingly handsome, garlanded with forest flowers.’

Verse 5 (bhagavata.10.51.5)

lakṣaṇair nārada-proktair nānyo bhavitum arhati nirāyudhaś calan padbhyāṁ yotsye ’nena nirāyudhaḥ

‘By the signs Narada described, He can be none other. Since He goes on foot, unarmed, I too shall fight Him without weapons.’

Verse 6 (bhagavata.10.51.6)

iti niścitya yavanaḥ prādravad taṁ parāṅ-mukham anvadhāvaj jighṛkṣus taṁ durāpam api yoginām

Resolving thus, the Yavana ran after Krishna, who turned His back and fled; though very hard to attain even for great mystics, the Lord was pursued by him who wished to seize Him.

Verse 7 (bhagavata.10.51.7)

hasta-prāptam ivātmānaṁ harīṇā sa pade pade nīto darśayatā dūraṁ yavaneśo ’dri-kandaram

At every step He seemed just within reach of the barbarian's hands, yet Lord Hari, ever showing Himself, led the King of the Yavanas far away into a mountain cave.

Verse 8 (bhagavata.10.51.8)

palāyanaṁ yadu-kule jātasya tava nocitam iti kṣipann anugato nainaṁ prāpāhatāśubhaḥ

Hurling insults as he chased Him — ‘It is not proper for one born in the Yadu dynasty to flee!’ — still, his sins uncleansed, the Yavana could not catch Him.

Verse 9 (bhagavata.10.51.9)

evaṁ kṣipto ’pi bhagavān prāviśad giri-kandaram so ’pi praviṣṭas tatrānyaṁ śayānaṁ dadṛśe naram

Though thus insulted, the Lord entered the mountain cave; and he too, entering there, saw another man lying asleep.

Verse 10 (bhagavata.10.51.10)

nanv asau dūram ānīya śete mām iha sādhu-vat iti matvācyutaṁ mūḍhas taṁ padā samatāḍayat

‘So, after leading me all this way, He now lies here quietly as if innocent!’ Thinking the sleeping man to be Achyuta, the fool struck him with his foot.

Verse 11 (bhagavata.10.51.11)

sa utthāya ciraṁ suptaḥ śanair unmīlya locane diśo vilokayan pārśve tam adrākṣīd avasthitam

That man, who had been sleeping for a very long time, slowly opened his eyes and, looking about in every direction, saw him standing at his side.

Verse 12 (bhagavata.10.51.12)

sa tāvat tasya ruṣṭasya dṛṣṭi-pātena bhārata deha-jenāgninā dagdho bhasma-sād abhavat kṣaṇāt

O descendant of Bharata, that angered man merely cast his glance upon the Yavana, and by the fire generated from his own body, he was burnt to ashes in an instant.

Verse 13 (bhagavata.10.51.13)

śrī-rājovāca ko nāma sa pumān brahman kasya kiṁ-vīrya eva ca kasmād guhāṁ gataḥ śiṣye kiṁ-tejo yavanārdanaḥ

King Parikshit said: ‘Who was that person, O brahmana? Of which family and what power was he? Why did he go to sleep in that cave, and by whose power was the Yavana destroyed?’

Verse 14 (bhagavata.10.51.14)

śrī-śuka uvāca sa ikṣvāku-kule jāto māndhātṛ-tanayo mahān mucukunda iti khyāto brahmaṇyaḥ satya-saṅgaraḥ

Shukadeva said: He, a great personality named Mucukunda, was born in the Ikshvaku dynasty as the son of Mandhata; devoted to the brahmanas, he was ever true to his word in battle.

Verse 15 (bhagavata.10.51.15)

sa yācitaḥ sura-gaṇair indrādyair ātma-rakṣaṇe asurebhyaḥ paritrastais tad-rakṣāṁ so ’karoc ciram

Requested by Indra and the other demigods, terrified as they were of the demons, to protect them, he guarded them for a very long time.

Verse 16 (bhagavata.10.51.16)

labdhvā guhaṁ te svaḥ-pālaṁ mucukundam athābruvan rājan viramatāṁ kṛcchrād bhavān naḥ paripālanāt

When they had obtained Guha (Kartikeya) as their protector, they said to Mucukunda: ‘O King, you may now be relieved of this arduous task of guarding us.’

Verse 17 (bhagavata.10.51.17)

kālo balīyān balināṁ bhagavān īśvaro ’vyayaḥ prajāḥ kālayate krīḍan paśu-pālo yathā paśūn

‘Time, mightier than the mighty, is the inexhaustible Supreme Personality Himself; playfully He drives all creatures onward, as a herdsman drives his cattle.’

Verse 20 (bhagavata.10.51.20)

varaṁ vṛṇīṣva bhadraṁ te ṛte kaivalyam adya naḥ eka eveśvaras tasya bhagavān viṣṇur avyayaḥ

‘All good fortune to you—now choose a boon from us, save liberation alone, for only the inexhaustible Lord Vishnu Himself can grant that.’

Verse 21 (bhagavata.10.51.21)

evam uktaḥ sa vai devān abhivandya mahā-yaśāḥ aśayiṣṭa guhā-viṣṭo nidrayā deva-dattayā

Thus addressed, that man of great renown bowed to the demigods and, entering the cave, lay down to enjoy the sleep granted him by them.

Verse 22 (bhagavata.10.51.22)

yavane bhasma-sān nīte bhagavān sātvatarṣabhaḥ ātmānaṁ darśayām āsa mucukundāya dhīmate
