Chapter 51All chaptersChapter 53

Verse 1 (bhagavata.10.52.1)

śrī-śuka uvāca itthaṁ so ’nagrahīto ’nga kṛṣṇenekṣvāku nandanaḥ taṁ parikramya sannamya niścakrāma guhā-mukhāt

Shukadeva said: My dear Parikshit, thus graced by Krishna, Mucukunda, the beloved son of the Ikshvaku line, circled Him and bowed down, then went out through the mouth of the cave.

Verse 2 (bhagavata.10.52.2)

saṁvīkṣya kṣullakān martyān paśūn vīrud-vanaspatīn matvā kali-yugaṁ prāptaṁ jagāma diśam uttarām

Seeing that human beings, animals, plants and trees had all grown small, he understood that the Age of Kali had arrived, and so he set out toward the north.

Verse 3 (bhagavata.10.52.3)

tapaḥ-śraddhā-yuto dhīro niḥsaṅgo mukta-saṁśayaḥ samādhāya manaḥ kṛṣṇe prāviśad gandhamādanam

Sober, filled with faith for austerity, detached, and free of doubt, he fixed his mind upon Krishna and entered the Gandhamadana mountain.

Verse 4 (bhagavata.10.52.4)

badary-āśramam āsādya nara-nārāyaṇālayam sarva-dvandva-sahaḥ śāntas tapasārādhayad dharim

Reaching Badarikashrama, the abode of Nara-Narayana, peaceful and tolerant of all dualities, he worshiped Hari there through severe austerities.

Verse 5 (bhagavata.10.52.5)

bhagavān punar āvrajya purīṁ yavana-veṣṭitām hatvā mleccha-balaṁ ninye tadīyaṁ dvārakāṁ dhanam

The Lord returned again to His city, still surrounded by the Yavanas; slaying the barbarian army, He began carrying their wealth to Dvaraka.

Verse 6 (bhagavata.10.52.6)

nīyamāne dhane gobhir nṛbhiś cācyuta-coditaiḥ ājagāma jarāsandhas trayo-viṁśaty-anīka-paḥ

As that wealth was being carried by oxen and men at Achyuta's direction, Jarasandha arrived, leading twenty-three armies.

Verse 7 (bhagavata.10.52.7)

vilokya vega-rabhasaṁ ripu-sainyasya mādhavau manuṣya-ceṣṭām āpannau rājan dudruvatur drutam

O King, seeing the ferocious onrush of the enemy forces, the two Madhavas, assuming human behavior, swiftly ran away.

Verse 8 (bhagavata.10.52.8)

vihāya vittaṁ pracuram abhītau bhīru-bhīta-vat padbhyāṁ palāśābhyāṁ celatur bahu-yojanam

Abandoning their vast wealth, fearless yet feigning fear like frightened men, They went on Their lotus-soft feet for many yojanas.

Verse 9 (bhagavata.10.52.9)

palāyamānau tau dṛṣṭvā māgadhaḥ prahasan balī anvadhāvad rathānīkair īśayor apramāṇa-vit

Seeing Them fleeing, the mighty Jarasandha, laughing aloud, chased after Them with his chariots and soldiers, unaware of the true greatness of the two Lords.

Verse 10 (bhagavata.10.52.10)

pradrutya dūraṁ saṁśrāntau tuṅgam āruhatāṁ girim pravarṣaṇākhyaṁ bhagavān nityadā yatra varṣati

Having run a great distance and appearing exhausted, the two climbed a lofty mountain named Pravarshana, where Lord Indra ever sends down rain.

Verse 11 (bhagavata.10.52.11)

girau nilīnāv ājñāya nādhigamya padaṁ nṛpa dadāha girim edhobhiḥ samantād agnim utsṛjan

O King, knowing They were hidden on the mountain but unable to find Their exact spot, Jarasandha piled up firewood and set fire to it on every side.

Verse 12 (bhagavata.10.52.12)

tata utpatya tarasā dahyamāna-taṭād ubhau daśaika-yojanāt tuṅgān nipetatur adho bhuvi

Then, from the burning slopes, the two of Them swiftly leapt down to the ground from a height of eleven yojanas.

Verse 13 (bhagavata.10.52.13)

alakṣyamāṇau ripuṇā sānugena yadūttamau sva-puraṁ punar āyātau samudra-parikhāṁ nṛpa

O King, unseen by their enemy or his followers, those two foremost Yadus returned to Their own city, moated by the sea.

Verse 14 (bhagavata.10.52.14)

so ’pi dagdhāv iti mṛṣā manvāno bala-keśavau balam ākṛṣya su-mahan magadhān māgadho yayau

Jarasandha, mistakenly believing Balarama and Keshava had both burned to death, then withdrew his immense army and returned to the Magadha kingdom.

Verse 15 (bhagavata.10.52.15)

ānartādhipatiḥ śrīmān raivato raivatīṁ sutām brahmaṇā coditaḥ prādād balāyeti puroditam

As Lord Brahma had earlier directed, the opulent Raivata, ruler of Anarta, gave his daughter Raivati to Balarama in marriage — as has already been told.

Verse 16 (bhagavata.10.52.16)

bhagavān api govinda upayeme kurūdvaha vaidarbhīṁ bhīṣmaka-sutāṁ śriyo mātrāṁ svayaṁvare

O hero among the Kurus, the Supreme Lord Govinda Himself married Vaidarbhi, daughter of King Bhishmaka, an expansion of the goddess of fortune, by her own choosing, at her svayamvara.

Verse 17 (bhagavata.10.52.17)

pramathya tarasā rājñaḥ śālvādīṁś caidya-pakṣa-gān paśyatāṁ sarva-lokānāṁ tārkṣya-putraḥ sudhām iva

In doing so, He forcefully crushed the kings Shalva and others who sided with Shishupala, and, as all the people looked on, He carried Rukmini away just as Garuda once boldly stole the nectar.

Verse 18 (bhagavata.10.52.18)

śrī-rājovāca bhagavān bhīṣmaka-sutāṁ rukmiṇīṁ rucirānanām rākṣasena vidhānena upayema iti śrutam

King Parikshit said: ‘I have heard that the Lord married Rukmini, the lovely-faced daughter of Bhishmaka, in the Rakshasa fashion of marriage.’

Verse 19 (bhagavata.10.52.19)

bhagavan śrotum icchāmi kṛṣṇasyāmita-tejasaḥ yathā māgadha-śālvādīn jitvā kanyām upāharat

‘O lord, I wish to hear how Krishna, whose power is boundless, won His bride after defeating kings such as Magadha and Shalva.’

Verse 20 (bhagavata.10.52.20)

brahman kṛṣṇa-kathāḥ puṇyā mādhvīr loka-malāpahāḥ ko nu tṛpyeta śṛṇvānaḥ śruta-jño nitya-nūtanāḥ

‘O brahmana, who versed in such matters could ever be satiated hearing the pious, sweet, ever-fresh accounts of Krishna, which wash away the impurities of the world?’

Verse 21 (bhagavata.10.52.21)

śrī-bādarāyaṇir uvāca rājāsīd bhīṣmako nāma vidarbhādhipatir mahān tasya pancābhavan putrāḥ kanyaikā ca varānanā

Shukadeva (son of Badarayana) said: ‘There was a great king named Bhishmaka, ruler of Vidarbha; he had five sons and one exceedingly beautiful daughter.’

Verse 22 (bhagavata.10.52.22)

rukmy agrajo rukmaratho rukmabāhur anantaraḥ rukmakeśo rukmamālī rukmiṇy eṣā svasā satī

‘Rukmi was the eldest, followed by Rukmaratha, Rukmabahu, Rukmakesha and Rukmamali; their virtuous sister was this same Rukmini.’

Verse 23 (bhagavata.10.52.23)

sopaśrutya mukundasya rūpa-vīrya-guṇa-śriyaḥ gṛhāgatair gīyamānās taṁ mene sadṛśaṁ patim

Hearing of Mukunda's beauty, valor, virtues and glory from those who came to her father's house singing His praises, she resolved that He alone was the husband fit for her.

Verse 24 (bhagavata.10.52.24)

tāṁ buddhi-lakṣaṇaudārya- rūpa-śīla-guṇāśrayām kṛṣṇaś ca sadṛśīṁ bhāryāṁ samudvoḍhuṁ mano dadhe

And Krishna too, knowing her to be a treasury of intelligence, auspicious marks, generosity, beauty, character and virtue, made up His own mind to take her as His fitting wife.

Verse 25 (bhagavata.10.52.25)

bandhūnām icchatāṁ dātuṁ kṛṣṇāya bhaginīṁ nṛpa tato nivārya kṛṣṇa-dviḍ rukmī caidyam amanyata

O King, though her family wished to give their sister to Krishna, Rukmi, who bore hatred for Krishna, prevented them and resolved instead to give her to the King of Chedi, Shishupala.

Verse 26 (bhagavata.10.52.26)

tad avetyāsitāpāṅgī vaidarbhī durmanā bhṛśam vicintyāptaṁ dvijaṁ kañcit kṛṣṇāya prāhiṇod drutam

When dark-eyed Vaidarbhi learned of this, she became deeply distressed; after careful thought, she swiftly sent a trusted brahmana to Krishna.

Verse 27 (bhagavata.10.52.27)

dvārakāṁ sa samabhyetya pratīhāraiḥ praveśitaḥ apaśyad ādyaṁ puruṣam āsīnaṁ kāñcanāsane

Arriving at Dvaraka, he was ushered in by the gatekeepers and beheld the primeval Supreme Person seated upon a golden throne.

Verse 28 (bhagavata.10.52.28)

dṛṣṭvā brahmaṇya-devas tam avaruhya nijāsanāt upaveśyārhayāṁ cakre yathātmānaṁ divaukasaḥ

Seeing him, the Lord, protector of the brahmanas, rose at once from His own throne, seated him upon it, and honored him just as the celestials honor the Lord Himself.

Verse 29 (bhagavata.10.52.29)

taṁ bhuktavantaṁ viśrāntam upagamya satāṁ gatiḥ pāṇinābhimṛśan pādāv avyagras tam apṛcchata

After the brahmana had eaten and rested, Krishna, the refuge of the saintly, approached him, and, massaging his feet with His own hands, gently began to inquire.

Verse 30 (bhagavata.10.52.30)

kaccid dvija-vara-śreṣṭha dharmas te vṛddha-sammataḥ vartate nāti-kṛcchreṇa santuṣṭa-manasaḥ sadā

‘O best among excellent brahmanas, are your religious duties, sanctioned by the elders, proceeding without great hardship, and is your mind always fully content?’

Verse 31 (bhagavata.10.52.31)

santuṣṭo yarhi varteta brāhmaṇo yena kenacit ahīyamānaḥ svad dharmāt sa hy asyākhila-kāma-dhuk

‘When a brahmana remains satisfied with whatever comes to him, without falling from his own duty, that very contentment becomes for him the wish-fulfilling cow, granting him everything.’

Verse 32 (bhagavata.10.52.32)

asantuṣṭo ’sakṛl lokān āpnoty api sureśvaraḥ akiñcano ’pi santuṣṭaḥ śete sarvāṅga-vijvaraḥ

‘An unsatisfied person wanders restlessly from world to world, even if he becomes lord of the demigods; but a contented one, even possessing nothing, rests peacefully, every limb free of distress.’

Verse 33 (bhagavata.10.52.33)

viprān sva-lābha-santuṣṭān sādhūn bhūta-suhṛttamān nirahaṅkāriṇaḥ śāntān namasye śirasāsakṛt

‘Again and again I bow my head to those learned brahmanas who are content with their own gain, saintly, the truest well-wishers of all beings, free of false ego and ever peaceful.’

Verse 34 (bhagavata.10.52.34)

kaccid vaḥ kuśalaṁ brahman rājato yasya hi prajāḥ sukhaṁ vasanti viṣaye pālyamānāḥ sa me priyaḥ

‘O brahmana, tell Me, is all well with you? Is your king caring for you? Dear indeed to Me is that king in whose realm the subjects live happily, well protected.’

Verse 35 (bhagavata.10.52.35)

yatas tvam āgato durgaṁ nistīryeha yad-icchayā sarvaṁ no brūhy aguhyaṁ cet kiṁ kāryaṁ karavāma te

‘From where have you come, crossing this impassable sea, and by what desire? Tell Us everything, if it is not confidential, and let Us know what service We may render you.’

Verse 36 (bhagavata.10.52.36)

evaṁ sampṛṣṭa-sampraśno brāhmaṇaḥ parameṣṭhinā līlā-gṛhīta-dehena tasmai sarvam avarṇayat

Thus questioned by the Supreme Person, who assumes His forms as pastimes, the brahmana related everything to Him.

Verse 37 (bhagavata.10.52.37)

śrī-rukmiṇy uvāca śrutvā guṇān bhuvana-sundara śṛṇvatāṁ te nirviśya karṇa-vivarair harato ’ṅga-tāpam rūpaṁ dṛśāṁ dṛśimatām akhilārtha-lābhaṁ tvayy acyutāviśati cittam apatrapaṁ me

Rukmini said (in her letter, as read by the brahmana): ‘O beauty of all the worlds, having heard of Your qualities, which enter through the ears of Your listeners and remove the pain of their bodies, and of Your beauty, which fulfills every longing of the eyes that behold it, my shameless mind has entered wholly into You, O infallible Krishna.’

Verse 38 (bhagavata.10.52.38)

kā tvā mukunda mahatī kula-śīla-rūpa- vidyā-vayo-draviṇa-dhāmabhir ātma-tulyam dhīrā patiṁ kulavatī na vṛṇīta kanyā kāle nṛ-siṁha nara-loka-mano-’bhirāmam

‘O Mukunda, in lineage, character, beauty, learning, youth, wealth and influence You are equal only to Yourself. O lion among men, delighting the minds of all humankind—what sober, well-born maiden, when the time is right, would not choose You as her husband?’

Verse 39 (bhagavata.10.52.39)

tan me bhavān khalu vṛtaḥ patir aṅga jāyām ātmārpitaś ca bhavato ’tra vibho vidhehi mā vīra-bhāgam abhimarśatu caidya ārād gomāyu-van mṛga-pater balim ambujākṣa

‘Therefore, dear Lord, I have chosen You as my husband and offer myself entirely to You; O all-powerful one, please accept me. O lotus-eyed one, let not Shishupala touch what belongs to a hero, as a jackal dares not touch the lion's share.’

Verse 40 (bhagavata.10.52.40)

pūrteṣṭa-datta-niyama-vrata-deva-vipra gurv-arcanādibhir alaṁ bhagavān pareśaḥ ārādhito yadi gadāgraja etya pāṇiṁ gṛhṇātu me na damaghoṣa-sutādayo ’nye

‘If I have adequately worshiped the Supreme Lord through pious deeds, sacrifices, charity, vows and observances, and through the worship of gods, brahmanas and elders, then may Gadagraja come and take my hand—no one else, not Damaghosha's son.’

Verse 41 (bhagavata.10.52.41)

śvo bhāvini tvam ajitodvahane vidarbhān guptaḥ sametya pṛtanā-patibhiḥ parītaḥ nirmathya caidya-magadhendra-balaṁ prasahya māṁ rākṣasena vidhinodvaha vīrya-śulkām

‘O unconquerable one, tomorrow, when the wedding is about to take place, come unseen to Vidarbha surrounded by Your army's commanders; crush by force the strength of Chedi and Magadha's king, and take me in marriage by the Rakshasa rite, winning me as the prize of Your valor.’

Verse 42 (bhagavata.10.52.42)

antaḥ-purāntara-carīm anihatya bandhūn tvām udvahe katham iti pravadāmy upāyam pūrve-dyur asti mahatī kula-deva-yātrā yasyāṁ bahir nava-vadhūr girijām upeyāt

‘You may wonder how You could carry me off without harming my kinsmen, since I move about within the inner palace—let me tell You a way: the day before, there is a grand procession to the family deity, in which the new bride goes outside to visit the goddess Girija.’

Verse 43 (bhagavata.10.52.43)

yasyāṅghri-paṅkaja-rajaḥ-snapanaṁ mahānto vāñchanty umā-patir ivātma-tamo-’pahatyai yarhy ambujākṣa na labheya bhavat-prasādaṁ jahyām asūn vrata-kṛśān śata-janmabhiḥ syāt

‘Great souls like Uma's husband, Lord Shiva, hanker to bathe in the dust of Your lotus feet in order to destroy their own ignorance; O lotus-eyed one, if I fail to obtain Your grace, I shall give up this life, worn thin by austere vows, and perhaps after a hundred births attain it.’

Verse 44 (bhagavata.10.52.44)

brāhmaṇa uvāca ity ete guhya-sandeśā yadu-deva mayāhṛtāḥ vimṛśya kartuṁ yac cātra kriyatāṁ tad anantaram

The brahmana said: ‘This, O Lord of the Yadus, is the confidential message I have brought. Now consider what is to be done in this matter, and act upon it at once.’
