Chapter 57All chaptersChapter 59

Verse 1 (bhagavata.10.58.1)

śrī-śuka uvāca ekadā pāṇḍavān draṣṭuṁ pratītān puruṣottamaḥ indraprasthaṁ gataḥ śṛīmān yuyudhānādibhir vṛtaḥ

Shukadeva Gosvami said: Once the glorious Supreme Person, Purushottama, accompanied by Yuyudhana and others, went to Indraprastha to see the Pandavas, who had again become known publicly.

Verse 2 (bhagavata.10.58.2)

dṛṣṭvā tam āgataṁ pārthā mukundam akhileśvaram uttasthur yugapad vīrāḥ prāṇā mukhyam ivāgatam

Seeing Mukunda, the Lord of all, arrived, those heroic sons of Pritha all rose up together at once, like the senses rising when the chief life-breath returns.

Verse 3 (bhagavata.10.58.3)

pariṣvajyācyutaṁ vīrā aṅga-saṅga-hatainasaḥ sānurāga-smitaṁ vaktraṁ vīkṣya tasya mudaṁ yayuḥ

Embracing Achyuta, the heroes were freed of their sins by the touch of His body; and beholding His affectionate, smiling face, they were filled with joy.

Verse 4 (bhagavata.10.58.4)

yudhiṣṭhirasya bhīmasya kṛtvā pādābhivandanam phālgunaṁ parirabhyātha yamābhyāṁ cābhivanditaḥ

Bowing at the feet of Yudhishthira and Bhima, then firmly embracing Arjuna (Phalguna), He was in turn respectfully greeted by the twins, Nakula and Sahadeva.

Verse 5 (bhagavata.10.58.5)

paramāsana āsīnaṁ kṛṣṇā kṛṣṇam aninditā navoḍhā vrīḍitā kiñcic chanair etyābhyavandata

Faultless Krishna [Draupadi], the newly wedded bride, approached slowly and somewhat shyly, and offered her obeisances to Krishna, who was seated in the place of honor.

Verse 6 (bhagavata.10.58.6)

tathaiva sātyakiḥ pārthaiḥ pūjitaś cābhivanditaḥ niṣasādāsane ’nye ca pūjitāḥ paryupāsata

Satyaki likewise was worshiped and welcomed by the Parthas and took a seat, while the others too, duly honored, sat down around.

Verse 7 (bhagavata.10.58.7)

pṛthām samāgatya kṛtābhivādanas tayāti-hārdārdra-dṛśābhirambhitaḥ āpṛṣṭavāṁs tāṁ kuśalaṁ saha-snuṣāṁ pitṛ-ṣvasāram paripṛṣṭa-bāndhavaḥ

Going to Pritha (Kunti) and offering His obeisances, He was embraced by her, her eyes wet with intense affection; He asked of her and her daughter-in-law's welfare, while she in turn inquired at length about His father's kinsfolk.

Verse 8 (bhagavata.10.58.8)

tam āha prema-vaiklavya- ruddha-kaṇṭhāśru-locanā smarantī tān bahūn kleśān kleśāpāyātma-darśanam

Her throat choked with the distress of love, her eyes filled with tears, remembering their many sufferings, she spoke to Him who appears before His devotees to dispel their very sufferings.

Verse 9 (bhagavata.10.58.9)

tadaiva kuśalaṁ no ’bhūt sa-nāthās te kṛtā vayam jñatīn naḥ smaratā kṛṣṇa bhrātā me preṣitas tvayā

[Kunti said:] Only then did our welfare truly begin, when You, remembering us as Your kin, O Krishna, sent my brother [Akrura] to us.

Verse 10 (bhagavata.10.58.10)

For You, the friend and very Soul of the universe, there is no delusion of 'mine' and 'another's'; and yet, dwelling within the heart, You ever destroy the sufferings of those who remember You.

Verse 11 (bhagavata.10.58.11)

yudhiṣṭhira uvāca kiṁ na ācaritaṁ śreyo na vedāham adhīśvara yogeśvarāṇāṁ durdarśo yan no dṛṣṭaḥ ku-medhasām

Yudhishthira said: O supreme controller, I do not know what good deed we, of poor intelligence, performed, that we have obtained this rare sight of You, whom even the masters of yoga can hardly behold.

Verse 12 (bhagavata.10.58.12)

iti vai vārṣikān māsān rājñā so ’bhyarthitaḥ sukham janayan nayanānandam indraprasthaukasāṁ vibhuḥ

Thus invited by the King, the almighty Lord happily spent the months of the rainy season there, delighting the eyes of the people of Indraprastha.

Verse 13 (bhagavata.10.58.13)

ekadā ratham āruhya vijayo vānara-dhvajam gāṇḍīvaṁ dhanur ādāya tūṇau cākṣaya-sāyakau

Once Vijaya (Arjuna), mounting his chariot bearing the monkey banner, took up his bow Gandiva and his two inexhaustible quivers.

Verse 14 (bhagavata.10.58.14)

sākaṁ kṛṣṇena sannaddho vihartuṁ vipinaṁ mahat bahu-vyāla-mṛgākīrṇaṁ prāviśat para-vīra-hā

and, armored, together with Krishna, entered a vast forest teeming with fierce beasts to hunt for sport — he, the slayer of his enemies' heroes.

Verse 15 (bhagavata.10.58.15)

tatrāvidhyac charair vyāghrān śūkarān mahiṣān rurūn śarabhān gavayān khaḍgān hariṇān śaśa-śallakān

There he shot with his arrows tigers, boars, wild buffalo, rurus, sharabhas, gavayas, rhinoceroses, black deer, hares and porcupines.

Verse 16 (bhagavata.10.58.16)

tān ninyuḥ kiṅkarā rājñe medhyān parvaṇy upāgate tṛṭ-parītaḥ pariśrānto bibhatsur yamunām agāt

As a special occasion approached, servants carried those animals fit for sacrifice to the King; and Bibhatsu (Arjuna), overcome with thirst and fatigue, went to the Yamuna.

Verse 17 (bhagavata.10.58.17)

tatropaspṛśya viśadaṁ pītvā vāri mahā-rathau kṛṣṇau dadṛśatuḥ kanyāṁ carantīṁ cāru-darśanām

There the two Krishnas [Krishna and Arjuna] bathed and drank the clear water; then those great chariot-warriors beheld a maiden wandering about, lovely to behold.

Verse 18 (bhagavata.10.58.18)

tām āsādya varārohāṁ su-dvijāṁ rucirānanām papraccha preṣitaḥ sakhyā phālgunaḥ pramadottamām

Approaching her — she of fine hips, lovely teeth, and a charming face — Phalguna, sent by his friend, questioned that extraordinary young woman.

Verse 19 (bhagavata.10.58.19)

kā tvaṁ kasyāsi su-śroṇi kuto vā kiṁ cikīrṣasi manye tvāṁ patim icchantīṁ sarvaṁ kathaya śobhane

[Arjuna said:] Who are you, fair-waisted one, and whose daughter are you? Where have you come from, and what do you wish to do? I think you are seeking a husband — tell me everything, O beautiful one.

Verse 20 (bhagavata.10.58.20)

śrī-kālindy uvāca ahaṁ devasya savitur duhitā patim icchatī viṣṇuṁ vareṇyaṁ vara-daṁ tapaḥ paramam āsthitaḥ

Shri Kalindi said: I am the daughter of the god Savita [the sun]. Desiring Vishnu, the most excellent, the bestower of every boon, as my husband, I have undertaken the severest austerity.

Verse 21 (bhagavata.10.58.21)

nānyaṁ patiṁ vṛṇe vīra tam ṛte śrī-niketanam tuṣyatāṁ me sa bhagavān mukundo ’nātha-saṁśrayaḥ

O hero, I shall choose no other husband than Him, the abode of Shri. May that Bhagavan Mukunda, the shelter of the shelterless, be pleased with me.

Verse 22 (bhagavata.10.58.22)

kālindīti samākhyātā vasāmi yamunā-jale nirmite bhavane pitrā yāvad acyuta-darśanam

I am known as Kalindi, and I dwell in a mansion my father built for me within the waters of the Yamuna — until the day I behold Achyuta.

Verse 23 (bhagavata.10.58.23)

tathāvadad guḍākeśo vāsudevāya so ’pi tām ratham āropya tad-vidvān dharma-rājam upāgamat

[Shukadeva continued:] Thus Gudakesha (Arjuna) told Vasudeva, who already knew it all; and He, taking her onto His chariot, went to King Dharmaraja (Yudhishthira).

Verse 24 (bhagavata.10.58.24)

yadaiva kṛṣṇaḥ sandiṣṭaḥ pārthānāṁ paramādbutam kārayām āsa nagaraṁ vicitraṁ viśvakarmaṇā

[Recounting an earlier event, Shukadeva said:] Once, at the Pandavas' request, Krishna had a most wondrous, richly varied city built for them by Vishvakarma.

Verse 25 (bhagavata.10.58.25)

bhagavāṁs tatra nivasan svānāṁ priya-cikīrṣayā agnaye khāṇḍavaṁ dātum arjunasyāsa sārathiḥ

The Lord, residing there to please His own devotees, became Arjuna's charioteer in order to give the Khandava forest to Agni.

Verse 26 (bhagavata.10.58.26)

so ’gnis tuṣṭo dhanur adād dhayān śvetān rathaṁ nṛpa arjunāyākṣayau tūṇau varma cābhedyam astribhiḥ

Satisfied, O King, Agni gave Arjuna a bow, white horses, a chariot, two inexhaustible quivers, and armor unbreakable by any weapon.

Verse 27 (bhagavata.10.58.27)

mayaś ca mocito vahneḥ sabhāṁ sakhya upāharat yasmin duryodhanasyāsīj jala-sthala-dṛśi-bhramaḥ

And Maya, saved from the fire, presented an assembly hall to his friend Arjuna — the very hall in which Duryodhana would later mistake water for solid ground.

Verse 28 (bhagavata.10.58.28)

sa tena samanujñātaḥ suhṛdbhiś cānumoditaḥ āyayau dvārakāṁ bhūyaḥ sātyaki-pramakhair vṛtaḥ

Given leave by Arjuna and encouraged by His well-wishers, the Lord returned again to Dvaraka, accompanied by Satyaki and others.

Verse 29 (bhagavata.10.58.29)

athopayeme kālindīṁ su-puṇya-rtv-ṛkṣa ūrjite vitanvan paramānandaṁ svānāṁ parama-maṅgalaḥ

Then, on a highly auspicious day of season and stellar configuration, the supremely auspicious Lord married Kalindi, spreading the greatest joy among His devotees.

Verse 30 (bhagavata.10.58.30)

vindyānuvindyāv āvantyau duryodhana-vaśānugau svayaṁvare sva-bhaginīṁ kṛṣṇe saktāṁ nyaṣedhatām

Vindya and Anuvindya, the twin kings of Avanti and followers of Duryodhana, forbade their sister — though she was drawn to Krishna — from choosing Him at her svayamvara.

Verse 31 (bhagavata.10.58.31)

rājādhidevyās tanayāṁ mitravindāṁ pitṛ-ṣvasuḥ prasahya hṛtavān kṛṣṇo rājan rājñāṁ prapaśyatām

O King, Krishna forcibly carried off Mitravinda, daughter of His aunt Rajadhidevi, before the very eyes of the assembled kings.

Verse 32 (bhagavata.10.58.32)

nagnajin nāma kauśalya āsīd rājāti-dhārmikaḥ tasya satyābhavat kanyā devī nāgnajitī nṛpa

O King, there was a most righteous ruler of Kosala named Nagnajit, whose lovely daughter was called Satya, or Nagnajiti.

Verse 33 (bhagavata.10.58.33)

na tāṁ śekur nṛpā voḍhum ajitvā sapta-go-vṛṣān tīkṣṇa-śṛṅgān su-durdharṣān vīrya-gandhāsahān khalān

No king could win her hand without first defeating seven sharp-horned bulls — utterly unmanageable and vicious, unable even to bear the scent of a warrior.

Verse 34 (bhagavata.10.58.34)

tāṁ śrutvā vṛṣa-jil-labhyāṁ bhagavān sātvatāṁ patiḥ jagāma kauśalya-puraṁ sainyena mahatā vṛtaḥ

Hearing that she could be won only by the conqueror of those bulls, the Lord of the Vaishnavas set out for the city of Kosala with a great army.

Verse 35 (bhagavata.10.58.35)

sa kośala-patiḥ prītaḥ pratyutthānāsanādibhiḥ arhaṇenāpi guruṇā pūjayan pratinanditaḥ

The lord of Kosala, delighted, honored Him by rising, offering a seat and rich gifts, and was in turn greeted respectfully by the Lord.

Verse 36 (bhagavata.10.58.36)

varaṁ vilokyābhimataṁ samāgataṁ narendra-kanyā cakame ramā-patim bhūyād ayaṁ me patir āśiṣo ’nalaḥ karotu satyā yadi me dhṛto vrataḥ

Seeing that agreeable suitor arrive, the King's daughter desired Him, the Lord of Rama (Lakshmi), and prayed: 'May He become my husband; if my vow has truly been kept, may the sacred fire fulfill this hope.'

Verse 37 (bhagavata.10.58.37)

yat-pāda-paṅkaja-rajaḥ śirasā bibharti śṛīr abya-jaḥ sa-giriśaḥ saha loka-pālaiḥ līlā-tanuḥ sva-kṛta-setu-parīpsayā yaḥ kāle ’dadhat sa bhagavān mama kena tuṣyet

'He whose lotus-feet's dust is borne on their heads by Shri, lotus-born Brahma and Girisha [Shiva] together with the guardians of the worlds; who, to protect the law He Himself established, assumes forms of play from age to age — with what can I please that Bhagavan?'

Verse 38 (bhagavata.10.58.38)

arcitaṁ punar ity āha nārāyaṇa jagat-pate ātmānandena pūrṇasya karavāṇi kim alpakaḥ

Having thus worshiped Him further, he [King Nagnajit] said: 'O Narayana, Lord of the universe, You are ever full in Your own bliss — what then can this insignificant one do for You?'

Verse 39 (bhagavata.10.58.39)

śrī-śuka uvāca tam āha bhagavān hṛṣṭaḥ kṛtāsana-parigrahaḥ megha-gambhīrayā vācā sa-smitaṁ kuru-nandana

Shukadeva Gosvami said: O beloved descendant of Kuru, the Lord, pleased, took the seat offered him and, with a smile, addressed the King in a voice deep as a rain-cloud.

Verse 40 (bhagavata.10.58.40)

śrī-bhagavān uvāca narendra yācñā kavibhir vigarhitā rājanya-bandhor nija-dharma-vartinaḥ tathāpi yāce tava sauhṛdecchayā kanyāṁ tvadīyāṁ na hi śulka-dā vayam

The Lord said: O ruler of men, the learned condemn begging even for one born of royal lineage devoted to his own duty; yet, desiring your friendship, I ask for your daughter — though We give no bride-price in return.

Verse 41 (bhagavata.10.58.41)

śrī-rājovāca ko ’nyas te ’bhyadhiko nātha kanyā-vara ihepsitaḥ guṇaika-dhāmno yasyāṅge śrīr vasaty anapāyinī

The King said: O Lord, who else could possibly be worthier or more desired than You as a bridegroom here — You who alone are the abode of every virtue, on whose body Shri herself dwells, never departing?

Verse 42 (bhagavata.10.58.42)

kintv asmābhiḥ kṛtaḥ pūrvaṁ samayaḥ sātvatarṣabha puṁsāṁ vīrya-parīkṣārthaṁ kanyā-vara-parīpsayā

'But, O chief of the Satvatas, we had earlier set a condition, in order to test the valor of suitors seeking my daughter's hand.'

Verse 43 (bhagavata.10.58.43)

saptaite go-vṛṣā vīra durdāntā duravagrahāḥ etair bhagnāḥ su-bahavo bhinna-gātrā nṛpātmajāḥ

'These seven bulls, O hero, are savage and impossible to restrain; by them many princes have already been shattered, their limbs broken.'

Verse 44 (bhagavata.10.58.44)

yad ime nigṛhītāḥ syus tvayaiva yadu-nandana varo bhavān abhimato duhitur me śriyaḥ-pate

'If You alone, O descendant of Yadu, can subdue them, then You, O Lord of Shri, shall be the approved bridegroom for my daughter.'

Verse 45 (bhagavata.10.58.45)

evaṁ samayam ākarṇya baddhvā parikaraṁ prabhuḥ ātmānaṁ saptadhā kṛtvā nyagṛhṇāl līlayaiva tān

Hearing this condition, the Lord tightened His garment, expanded Himself into seven forms, and subdued them as easily as play.

Verse 46 (bhagavata.10.58.46)

baddhvā tān dāmabhiḥ śaurir bhagna-darpān hataujasaḥ vyakarsal līlayā baddhān bālo dāru-mayān yathā

Binding them with ropes, Lord Shauri, their pride broken and strength spent, dragged them about playfully, as a child drags wooden toy bulls.

Verse 47 (bhagavata.10.58.47)

tataḥ prītaḥ sutāṁ rājā dadau kṛṣṇāya vismitaḥ tāṁ pratyagṛhṇād bhagavān vidhi-vat sadṛśīṁ prabhuḥ

Then the King, delighted and astonished, gave his daughter to Krishna; and the Supreme Lord accepted this fitting bride in accordance with proper rites.

Verse 48 (bhagavata.10.58.48)

rāja-patnyaś ca duhituḥ kṛṣṇaṁ labdhvā priyaṁ patim lebhire paramānandaṁ jātaś ca paramotsavaḥ

The King's wives, seeing their daughter obtain Krishna as her beloved husband, felt the greatest joy, and a supreme festivity arose.

Verse 49 (bhagavata.10.58.49)

śaṅkha-bhery-ānakā nedur gīta-vādya-dvijāśiṣaḥ narā nāryaḥ pramuditāḥ suvāsaḥ-srag-alaṅkṛtāḥ

Conches, kettledrums and drums resounded, along with song, music, and the brahmanas' blessings; joyful men and women adorned themselves with fine garments and garlands.

Verse 50 (bhagavata.10.58.50)
