The Killing of Bhaumasura and the Marriage to the Princesses

Chapter 58All chaptersChapter 60

Verse 1 (bhagavata.10.59.1)

śrī-rājovāca yathā hato bhagavatā bhaumo yene ca tāḥ striyaḥ niruddhā etad ācakṣva vikramaṁ śārṅga-dhanvanaḥ

The king said: How was Bhaumasura, by whom these women were held captive, slain by Bhagavan? Please narrate this feat of Shri Sharngadhanva [Krishna, bearer of the Sharnga bow].

Verse 2 (bhagavata.10.59.2)

śrī-śuka uvāca indreṇa hṛta-chatreṇa hṛta-kuṇḍala-bandhunā hṛtāmarādri-sthānena jñāpito bhauma-ceṣṭitam sa-bhāryo garuḍārūḍhaḥ prāg-jyotiṣa-puraṁ yayau

Shukadeva Gosvami said: Informed by Indra — whose umbrella had been stolen, whose kinswoman's [Aditi's] earrings had been taken, and whose realm atop the mountain of the immortals had been seized — of Bhauma's misdeeds, the Lord, together with His wife, mounted Garuda and set out for the city of Pragjyotisha,

Verse 3 (bhagavata.10.59.3)

giri-durgaiḥ śastra-durgair jalāgny-anila-durgamam mura-pāśāyutair ghorair dṛḍhaiḥ sarvata āvṛtam

a city made impregnable by fortifications of mountains, weapons, water, fire and wind, and encircled on every side by tens of thousands of fearsome, unyielding mura-noose barriers.

Verse 4 (bhagavata.10.59.4)

gadayā nirbibhedādrīn śastra-durgāṇi sāyakaiḥ cakreṇāgniṁ jalaṁ vāyuṁ mura-pāśāṁs tathāsinā

With His club He broke through the mountain fortifications, with His arrows the weapon-fortifications, with His disc the fire, water and wind, and with His sword the mura-nooses.

Verse 5 (bhagavata.10.59.5)

śaṅkha-nādena yantrāṇi hṛdayāni manasvinām prākāraṁ gadayā gurvyā nirbibheda gadādharaḥ

With the blast of His conch-shell, Gadadhara shattered the mystic seals guarding the hearts of the valiant defenders, and with His heavy mace He demolished the great rampart.

Verse 6 (bhagavata.10.59.6)

pāñcajanya-dhvaniṁ śrutvā yugāntaśani-bhīṣaṇam muraḥ śayāna uttasthau daityaḥ pañca-śirā jalāt

Hearing the sound of the Panchajanya, terrifying as the thunderbolt at the dissolution of an age, the sleeping five-headed demon Mura rose up out of the water.

Verse 7 (bhagavata.10.59.7)

tri-śūlam udyamya su-durnirīkṣaṇo yugānta-sūryānala-rocir ulbaṇaḥ grasaṁs tri-lokīm iva pañcabhir mukhair abhyadravat tārkṣya-sutaṁ yathoragaḥ

Raising his trident, dreadful to behold, blazing like the sun's fire at the end of an age, seeming to devour the three worlds with his five mouths, he charged at Garuda, the son of Tarkshya, as a serpent strikes.

Verse 8 (bhagavata.10.59.8)

āvidhya śūlaṁ tarasā garutmate nirasya vaktrair vyanadat sa pañcabhiḥ sa rodasī sarva-diśo ’mbaraṁ mahān āpūrayann aṇḍa-kaṭāham āvṛṇot

Whirling his trident, he hurled it forcefully at Garuda, roaring from his five mouths — a roar so vast it filled the earth, the sky, all directions and the firmament, reverberating against the very shell of the universe.

Verse 9 (bhagavata.10.59.9)

tadāpatad vai tri-śikhaṁ garutmate hariḥ śarābhyām abhinat tridhojasā mukheṣu taṁ cāpi śarair atāḍayat tasmai gadāṁ so ’pi ruṣā vyamuñcata

As that trident sped toward Garuda, Hari with two arrows broke it forcefully into three pieces; then He struck Mura's faces with arrows, and he, in fury, hurled his mace at the Lord.

Verse 10 (bhagavata.10.59.10)

tām āpatantīṁ gadayā gadāṁ mṛdhe gadāgrajo nirbibhide sahasradhā udyamya bāhūn abhidhāvato ’jitaḥ śirāṁsi cakreṇa jahāra līlayā

As that mace flew toward Him in the battle, Gadagraja shattered it into a thousand pieces with His own; and as Mura, raising his arms, rushed at Him, the unconquerable Lord effortlessly severed his heads with His disc.

Verse 11 (bhagavata.10.59.11)

vyasuḥ papātāmbhasi kṛtta-śīrṣo nikṛtta-śṛṅgo ’drir ivendra-tejasā tasyātmajāḥ sapta pitur vadhāturāḥ pratikriyāmarṣa-juṣaḥ samudyatāḥ

Lifeless, his heads severed, he fell into the water like a mountain whose peak had been sheared off by Indra's thunderbolt. His seven sons, tormented by their father's death, rose up eager for revenge.

Verse 12 (bhagavata.10.59.12)

tāmro ’ntarikṣaḥ śravaṇo vibhāvasur vasur nabhasvān aruṇaś ca saptamaḥ pīṭhaṁ puraskṛtya camū-patiṁ mṛdhe bhauma-prayuktā niragan dhṛtāyudhāḥ

Tamra, Antariksha, Shravana, Vibhavasu, Vasu, Nabhasvan, and the seventh, Aruna — commissioned by Bhauma, they marched onto the battlefield behind their general Pitha, weapons in hand.

Verse 13 (bhagavata.10.59.13)

prāyuñjatāsādya śarān asīn gadāḥ śakty-ṛṣṭi-śūlāny ajite ruṣolbaṇāḥ tac-chastra-kūṭaṁ bhagavān sva-mārgaṇair amogha-vīryas tilaśaś cakarta ha

Approaching the unconquerable Lord, they furiously loosed arrows, swords, maces, spears, lances and tridents at Him; but with His own arrows, the Lord of unfailing prowess cut that mountain of weapons to bits no larger than sesame seeds.

Verse 14 (bhagavata.10.59.14)

tān pīṭha-mukhyān anayad yama-kṣayaṁ nikṛtta-śīrṣoru-bhujāṅghri-varmaṇaḥ svānīka-pān acyuta-cakra-sāyakais tathā nirastān narako dharā-sutaḥ nirīkṣya durmarṣaṇa āsravan-madair gajaiḥ payodhi-prabhavair nirākramāt

He sent those led by Pitha to the abode of Yama, their heads, thighs, arms, legs and armor severed by Achyuta's disc and arrows. Seeing his army commanders thus destroyed, Naraka, son of the earth, unable to bear it, came out himself, with elephants born of the Ocean of Milk streaming with must.

Verse 15 (bhagavata.10.59.15)

dṛṣṭvā sa-bhāryaṁ garuḍopari sthitaṁ sūryopariṣṭāt sa-taḍid ghanaṁ yathā kṛṣṇaṁ sa tasmai vyasṛjac chata-ghnīṁ yodhāś ca sarve yugapac ca vivyadhuḥ

Seeing Krishna seated on Garuda with His wife — like a cloud with lightning above the sun — Bhauma hurled his Shataghni weapon at Him, and all his warriors attacked at once.

Verse 16 (bhagavata.10.59.16)

tad bhauma-sainyaṁ bhagavān gadāgrajo vicitra-vājair niśitaiḥ śilīmukhaiḥ nikṛtta-bāhūru-śirodhra-vigrahaṁ cakāra tarhy eva hatāśva-kuñjaram

At that very moment, Bhagavan Gadagraja loosed His sharp, brightly-feathered arrows upon Bhauma's army, reducing it to a mass of bodies with severed arms, thighs and necks, and slaying their horses and elephants as well.

Verse 17 (bhagavata.10.59.17)

yāni yodhaiḥ prayuktāni śastrāstrāṇi kurūdvaha haris tāny acchinat tīkṣṇaiḥ śarair ekaikaśas trībhiḥ

O hero of the Kurus, whatever weapons and missiles the soldiers hurled, Hari cut every one to pieces with three sharp arrows each.

Verse 18 (bhagavata.10.59.18)

uhyamānaḥ suparṇena pakṣābhyāṁ nighnatā gajān gurutmatā hanyamānās tuṇḍa-pakṣa-nakher gajāḥ

As Garuda bore Him, striking the elephants with his wings, and as those elephants were battered by his beak, wings and talons —

Verse 19 (bhagavata.10.59.19)

puram evāviśann ārtā narako yudhy ayudhyata

stricken, they fled back into the city, while Naraka alone remained fighting on the field.

Verse 20 (bhagavata.10.59.20)

dṛṣṭvā vidrāvitaṁ sainyaṁ garuḍenārditaṁ svakaṁ taṁ bhaumaḥ prāharac chaktyā vajraḥ pratihato yataḥ nākampata tayā viddho mālāhata iva dvipaḥ

Seeing his own army routed and harried by Garuda, Bhauma struck at him with his spear — the very one that had once withstood Indra's thunderbolt; yet though struck by it, Garuda was unshaken, like an elephant merely touched by a garland.

Verse 21 (bhagavata.10.59.21)

śūlaṁ bhaumo ’cyutaṁ hantum ādade vitathodyamaḥ tad-visargāt pūrvam eva narakasya śiro hariḥ apāharad gaja-sthasya cakreṇa kṣura-neminā

Bhauma then took up his trident to slay Achyuta, but his effort came to nothing — for even before he could release it, Hari, with His razor-rimmed disc, severed Naraka's head as he sat upon his elephant.

Verse 22 (bhagavata.10.59.22)

sa-kuṇḍalaṁ cāru-kirīṭa-bhūṣaṇaṁ babhau pṛthivyāṁ patitam samujjvalam ha heti sādhv ity ṛṣayaḥ sureśvarā mālyair mukundaṁ vikiranta īdire

Falling to the ground, brilliant with its earrings and fine crown-ornament, his head shone radiantly; while sages and the chief demigods cried 'Alas! Well done!' and showered garlands upon Mukunda in worship.

Verse 23 (bhagavata.10.59.23)

tataś ca bhūḥ kṛṣṇam upetya kuṇḍale pratapta-jāmbūnada-ratna-bhāsvare sa-vaijayantyā vana-mālayārpayat prācetasaṁ chatram atho mahā-maṇim

Then the earth-goddess approached Krishna and offered Him the two earrings, glowing with molten gold and gems, together with the Vaijayanti flower garland, Varuna's umbrella, and the great peak of Mandara.

Verse 24 (bhagavata.10.59.24)

astauṣīd atha viśveśaṁ devī deva-varārcitam prāñjaliḥ praṇatā rājan bhakti-pravaṇayā dhiyā

O King, then the goddess, bowing with joined palms, her mind steeped in devotion, praised the Lord of the universe, whom the greatest of the gods worship.

Verse 25 (bhagavata.10.59.25)

bhūmir uvāca namas te deva-deveśa śaṅkha-cakra-gadā-dhara bhaktecchopātta-rūpāya paramātman namo ’stu te

Bhumi (the earth-goddess) said: Obeisances to You, O Lord of lords, holder of conch, disc and mace; O Supreme Soul, who assume forms according to the desire of Your devotees, obeisances to You.

Verse 26 (bhagavata.10.59.26)

namaḥ paṅkaja-nābhāya namaḥ paṅkaja-māline namaḥ paṅkaja-netrāya namas te paṅkajāṅghraye

Obeisances to You whose navel bears the lotus, obeisances to You garlanded with lotuses, obeisances to You whose eyes are lotuses, obeisances to You whose feet are lotuses.

Verse 27 (bhagavata.10.59.27)

namo bhagavate tubhyaṁ vāsudevāya viṣṇave puruṣāyādi-bījāya pūrṇa-bodhāya te namaḥ

Obeisances to You, Bhagavan Vasudeva, Vishnu, the Supreme Person, the primeval seed of all, the fullness of knowledge — obeisances to You.

Verse 28 (bhagavata.10.59.28)

ajāya janayitre ’sya brahmaṇe ’nanta-śaktaye parāvarātman bhūtātman paramātman namo ’stu te

To You the unborn, the begetter of this universe, the Absolute of unlimited powers; O Soul of the higher and the lower, O Soul of all created beings, O Supreme Soul — obeisances to You.

Verse 29 (bhagavata.10.59.29)

tvaṁ vai sisṛkṣur aja utkaṭaṁ prabho tamo nirodhāya bibharṣy asaṁvṛtaḥ sthānāya sattvaṁ jagato jagat-pate kālaḥ pradhānaṁ puruṣo bhavān paraḥ

You indeed, unborn Lord, desiring to create, assume passion in its fullness; uncovered by it, You also assume ignorance to bring about dissolution, and goodness to sustain the universe, O Lord of the universe. You are Time, the material principle, and the Person, yet You remain ever transcendent.

Verse 30 (bhagavata.10.59.30)

ahaṁ payo jyotir athānilo nabho mātrāṇi devā mana indriyāṇi kartā mahān ity akhilaṁ carācaraṁ tvayy advitīye bhagavan ayaṁ bhramaḥ

This — that I (earth), water, fire, air, ether, the sense-objects, the gods, mind, the senses, the doer-ego, and the total material energy, all moving and unmoving existence — appear separate from You, who are without a second, O Lord — this alone is illusion.

Verse 31 (bhagavata.10.59.31)

tasyātmajo ’yaṁ tava pāda-paṅkajaṁ bhītaḥ prapannārti-haropasāditaḥ tat pālayainaṁ kuru hasta-paṅkajaṁ śirasy amuṣyākhila-kalmaṣāpaham

Here is his (Bhauma's) son, come in fear to Your lotus feet, O remover of the distress of the surrendered. Protect him; place Your lotus hand, which removes all sin, upon his head.

Verse 32 (bhagavata.10.59.32)

śrī-śuka uvāca iti bhūmy-arthito vāgbhir bhagavān bhakti-namrayā dattvābhayaṁ bhauma-gṛham prāviśat sakalarddhimat

Shukadeva Gosvami said: Thus entreated by the earth-goddess in words humbled by devotion, Bhagavan granted fearlessness and then entered Bhauma's palace, replete with every opulence.

Verse 33 (bhagavata.10.59.33)

tatra rājanya-kanyānāṁ ṣaṭ-sahasrādhikāyutam bhaumāhṛtānāṁ vikramya rājabhyo dadṛśe hariḥ

There Hari saw sixteen thousand and more royal maidens, whom Bhauma had forcibly seized from various kings.

Verse 34 (bhagavata.10.59.34)

tam praviṣṭaṁ striyo vīkṣya nara-varyaṁ vimohitāḥ manasā vavrire ’bhīṣṭaṁ patiṁ daivopasāditam

Seeing that most excellent of men enter, the women, enchanted, each in her own heart chose Him — brought there by providence — as her desired husband.

Verse 35 (bhagavata.10.59.35)

bhūyāt patir ayaṁ mahyaṁ dhātā tad anumodatām iti sarvāḥ pṛthak kṛṣṇe bhāvena hṛdayaṁ dadhuḥ

'May He alone become my husband — may Providence grant this' — thus each of them, separately, fixed her heart upon Krishna with this thought.

Verse 36 (bhagavata.10.59.36)

tāḥ prāhiṇod dvāravatīṁ su-mṛṣṭa-virajo-’mbarāḥ nara-yānair mahā-kośān rathāśvān draviṇaṁ mahāt

He had them arrayed in freshly cleaned, spotless garments and sent them to Dvaraka in palanquins, together with vast treasures, chariots, horses and wealth.

Verse 37 (bhagavata.10.59.37)

airāvata-kulebhāṁś ca catur-dantāṁs tarasvinaḥ pāṇḍurāṁś ca catuḥ-ṣaṣṭiṁ prerayām āsa keśavaḥ

Keshava also sent sixty-four swift, white, four-tusked elephants of Airavata's line.

Verse 38 (bhagavata.10.59.38)

gatvā surendra-bhavanaṁ dattvādityai ca kuṇḍale pūjitas tridaśendreṇa mahendryāṇyā ca sa-priyaḥ

Going to the abode of the lord of the gods and giving Aditi her earrings, He was worshiped, along with His beloved, by the king of the thirty gods and his queen.

Verse 39 (bhagavata.10.59.39)

codito bhāryayotpāṭya pārījātaṁ garutmati āropya sendrān vibudhān nirjityopānayat puram

Then, urged on by His wife, He uprooted the Parijata tree, set it upon Garuda, defeated Indra and the assembled gods, and brought it to His own city.

Verse 40 (bhagavata.10.59.40)

sthāpitaḥ satyabhāmāyā gṛhodyānopaśobhanaḥ anvagur bhramarāḥ svargāt tad-gandhāsava-lampaṭāḥ

Established in Satyabhama's garden, adorning her home, it was followed by heaven's bees, greedy for its fragrance and nectar.

Verse 41 (bhagavata.10.59.41)

yayāca ānamya kirīṭa-koṭibhiḥ pādau spṛśann acyutam artha-sādhanam siddhārtha etena vigṛhyate mahān aho surāṇāṁ ca tamo dhig āḍhyatām

Even after Indra had bowed low, touching Achyuta's feet with the tips of his crown, and begged Him — who had already granted his desire — that great one still chose to quarrel with Him. Alas, what ignorance persists among the gods! A curse upon such opulence!

Verse 42 (bhagavata.10.59.42)

atho muhūrta ekasmin nānāgāreṣu tāḥ striyaḥ yathopayeme bhagavān tāvad-rūpa-dharo ’vyayaḥ

Then, in that same auspicious moment, the imperishable Lord, assuming as many forms as there were, duly married all those women, each in her own separate residence.

Verse 43 (bhagavata.10.59.43)

gṛheṣu tāsām anapāyy atarka-kṛn nirasta-sāmyātiśayeṣv avasthitaḥ reme ramābhir nija-kāma-sampluto yathetaro gārhaka-medhikāṁś caran

Never absent from any of their homes, performing deeds beyond conception, established beyond all comparison or rivalry, He, absorbed in His own pleasure, sported with those beloved women, conducting Himself in each household exactly as any other man would.

Verse 44 (bhagavata.10.59.44)

itthaṁ ramā-patim avāpya patiṁ striyas tā brahmādayo ’pi na viduḥ padavīṁ yadīyām bhejur mudāviratam edhitayānurāga hāsāvaloka-nava-saṅgama-jalpa-lajjāḥ
