The Marriage of Samba

Chapter 67All chaptersChapter 69

Verse 1 (bhagavata.10.68.1)

śrī-śuka uvāca duryodhana-sutāṁ rājan lakṣmaṇāṁ samitiṁ-jayaḥ svayaṁvara-sthām aharat sāmbo jāmbavatī-sutaḥ

Śrī Śuka said: O King, ever-victorious Samba, son of Jambavati, carried off Duryodhana's daughter Lakshmana from her own svayamvara.

Verse 2 (bhagavata.10.68.2)

kauravāḥ kupitā ūcur durvinīto ’yam arbhakaḥ kadarthī-kṛtya naḥ kanyām akāmām aharad balāt

The angry Kauravas said: "This ill-mannered boy has insulted us, seizing our unwilling daughter by force."

Verse 3 (bhagavata.10.68.3)

badhnītemaṁ durvinītaṁ kiṁ kariṣyanti vṛṣṇayaḥ ye ’smat-prasādopacitāṁ dattāṁ no bhuñjate mahīm

"Bind this insolent boy! What can the Vrishnis do? They only thrive by our favor, enjoying land that we ourselves gave them."

Verse 4 (bhagavata.10.68.4)

nigṛhītaṁ sutaṁ śrutvā yady eṣyantīha vṛṣṇayaḥ bhagna-darpāḥ śamaṁ yānti prāṇā iva su-saṁyatāḥ

"Even if the Vrishnis, hearing that their son is captured, come here, their pride will be broken and they will grow subdued, just as the vital breaths grow calm once fully mastered."

Verse 5 (bhagavata.10.68.5)

iti karṇaḥ śalo bhūrir yajñaketuḥ suyodhanaḥ sāmbam ārebhire yoddhuṁ kuru-vṛddhānumoditāḥ

Having spoken thus, and with the sanction of the Kuru elders, Karna, Shala, Bhuri, Yajnaketu and Suyodhana set out to fight Samba.

Verse 6 (bhagavata.10.68.6)

dṛṣṭvānudhāvataḥ sāmbo dhārtarāṣṭrān mahā-rathaḥ pragṛhya ruciraṁ cāpaṁ tasthau siṁha ivaikalaḥ

Seeing the sons of Dhritarashtra rushing toward him, the great chariot-warrior Samba took up his splendid bow and stood alone, like a lion.

Verse 7 (bhagavata.10.68.7)

taṁ te jighṛkṣavaḥ kruddhās tiṣṭha tiṣṭheti bhāṣiṇaḥ āsādya dhanvino bāṇaiḥ karṇāgraṇyaḥ samākiran

Wishing to capture him, those enraged bowmen, shouting "Stand, stand!", closed in on him with Karna at their head, and rained arrows upon him.

Verse 8 (bhagavata.10.68.8)

so ’paviddhaḥ kuru-śreṣṭha kurubhir yadu-nandanaḥ nāmṛṣyat tad acintyārbhaḥ siṁha kṣudra-mṛgair iva

O best of the Kurus, though thus assailed by the Kurus, that astonishingly powerful child of the Yadus would not endure it, any more than a lion tolerates an attack by petty beasts.

Verse 9 (bhagavata.10.68.9)

visphūrjya ruciraṁ cāpaṁ sarvān vivyādha sāyakaiḥ karṇādīn ṣaḍ rathān vīras tāvadbhir yugapat pṛthak

Twanging his splendid bow, that hero pierced Karna and the other five charioteers all at once, each with an equal number of arrows, striking them separately yet simultaneously.

Verse 10 (bhagavata.10.68.10)

caturbhiś caturo vāhān ekaikena ca sārathīn rathinaś ca maheṣvāsāṁs tasya tat te ’bhyapūjayan

With four arrows each he pierced each team of four horses, with a single arrow each he struck the charioteers, and he likewise struck those mighty archers themselves; seeing this, even they praised him.

Verse 11 (bhagavata.10.68.11)

taṁ tu te virathaṁ cakruś catvāraś caturo hayān ekas tu sārathiṁ jaghne cicchedaṇyaḥ śarāsanam

Even so, they brought him down from his chariot — four of them killed his four horses, one struck down his charioteer, and another shattered his bow.

Verse 12 (bhagavata.10.68.12)

taṁ baddhvā virathī-kṛtya kṛcchreṇa kuravo yudhi kumāraṁ svasya kanyāṁ ca sva-puraṁ jayino ’viśan

Having with great difficulty unhorsed and bound him in battle, the victorious Kurus returned to their city, taking with them the boy and their own daughter.

Verse 13 (bhagavata.10.68.13)

tac chrutvā nāradoktena rājan sañjāta-manyavaḥ kurūn praty udyamaṁ cakrur ugrasena-pracoditāḥ

O King, hearing this from Narada's own lips, the Yadavas grew furious, and, urged on by Ugrasena, made ready for war against the Kurus.

Verse 14 (bhagavata.10.68.14)

sāntvayitvā tu tān rāmaḥ sannaddhān vṛṣṇi-puṅgavān naicchat kurūṇāṁ vṛṣṇīnāṁ kaliṁ kali-malāpahaḥ

But Balarama, who removes the taint of the age of quarrel, pacified those armor-clad Vrishni heroes, for He did not wish for strife between the Kurus and the Vrishnis.

Verse 15 (bhagavata.10.68.15)

jagāma hāstina-puraṁ rathenāditya-varcasā brāhmaṇaiḥ kula-vṛddhaiś ca vṛtaś candra iva grahaiḥ

He went to Hastinapura on His sun-bright chariot, surrounded by brahmanas and the family elders, appearing like the moon encircled by the planets.

Verse 16 (bhagavata.10.68.16)

gatvā gajāhvayaṁ rāmo bāhyopavanam āsthitaḥ uddhavaṁ preṣayām āsa dhṛtarāṣṭraṁ bubhutsayā

Reaching Hastinapura, Balarama stayed in a garden outside the city and sent Uddhava to learn Dhritarashtra's intentions.

Verse 17 (bhagavata.10.68.17)

so ’bhivandyāmbikā-putraṁ bhīṣmaṁ droṇaṁ ca bāhlikam duryodhanaṁ ca vidhi-vad rāmam āgataṁ abravīt

Having duly paid respects to Ambika's son Dhritarashtra, to Bhishma, Drona, Bahlika and Duryodhana, Uddhava informed them of Balarama's arrival.

Verse 18 (bhagavata.10.68.18)

te ’ti-prītās tam ākarṇya prāptaṁ rāmaṁ suhṛt-tamam tam arcayitvābhiyayuḥ sarve maṅgala-pāṇayaḥ

Overjoyed to hear that their dearest friend Balarama had arrived, they honored Uddhava and all went forth to meet Him, carrying auspicious articles in their hands.

Verse 19 (bhagavata.10.68.19)

taṁ saṅgamya yathā-nyāyaṁ gām arghyaṁ ca nyavedayan teṣāṁ ye tat-prabhāva-jñāḥ praṇemuḥ śirasā balam

Meeting Him, they duly offered a cow and arghya. Those among them who knew His true greatness bowed their heads to Him in homage.

Verse 20 (bhagavata.10.68.20)

bandhūn kuśalinaḥ śrutvā pṛṣṭvā śivam anāmayam parasparam atho rāmo babhāṣe ’viklavaṁ vacaḥ

After hearing that their kinsfolk on both sides were well, and after exchanging inquiries of welfare, Balarama then spoke these fearless words.

Verse 21 (bhagavata.10.68.21)

ugrasenaḥ kṣiteśeśo yad va ājñāpayat prabhuḥ tad avyagra-dhiyaḥ śrutvā kurudhvam avilambitam

Balarama said: "Listen with undistracted mind to what Ugrasena, lord even of kings, has commanded you, and carry it out without delay."

Verse 22 (bhagavata.10.68.22)

yad yūyaṁ bahavas tv ekaṁ jitvādharmeṇa dhārmikam abadhnītātha tan mṛṣye bandhūnām aikya-kāmyayā

"Ugrasena says: Though many of you together unfairly overpowered and bound a single righteous man, still, desiring unity among kinsmen, I let it pass."

Verse 23 (bhagavata.10.68.23)

vīrya-śaurya-balonnaddham ātma-śakti-samaṁ vacaḥ kuravo baladevasya niśamyocuḥ prakopitāḥ

Hearing these words of Balarama's, charged with valor, courage and strength and matching His own might, the Kauravas grew furious and spoke.

Verse 24 (bhagavata.10.68.24)

aho mahac citram idaṁ kāla-gatyā duratyayā ārurukṣaty upānad vai śiro mukuṭa-sevitam

"The Kurus said: Oh, how astonishing this is! See the inexorable course of time — now a mere sandal aspires to climb upon the crowned head!"

Verse 25 (bhagavata.10.68.25)

ete yaunena sambaddhāḥ saha-śayyāsanāśanāḥ vṛṣṇayas tulyatāṁ nītā asmad-datta-nṛpāsanāḥ

"Only because of marriage ties have we granted these Vrishnis equal standing with us in bed, seat and meal — it is we who gave them the royal thrones they occupy."

Verse 26 (bhagavata.10.68.26)

cāmara-vyajane śaṅkham ātapatraṁ ca pāṇḍuram kirīṭam āsanaṁ śayyāṁ bhuñjate ’smad-upekṣayā

"Only through our indulgence can they enjoy the yak-tail fans, the conch, the white parasol, the crown, the throne and the royal bed."

Verse 27 (bhagavata.10.68.27)

alaṁ yadūnāṁ naradeva-lāñchanair dātuḥ pratīpaiḥ phaṇinām ivāmṛtam ye ’smat-prasādopacitā hi yādavā ājñāpayanty adya gata-trapā bata

"Let these Yadus no longer bear the royal insignia — they have become a peril to the very givers, like milk turned to poison when fed to a serpent. These Yadavas, grown prosperous only by our favor, have today lost all shame and dare to give us orders!"

Verse 28 (bhagavata.10.68.28)

katham indro ’pi kurubhir bhīṣma-droṇārjunādibhiḥ adattam avarundhīta siṁha-grastam ivoraṇaḥ

"How indeed could even Indra seize what Bhishma, Drona, Arjuna and the other Kurus have not granted — any more than a lamb could snatch a lion's kill?"

Verse 29 (bhagavata.10.68.29)

śrī-bādarāyaṇir uvāca janma-bandhu-śrīyonnaddha- madās te bharatarṣabha āśrāvya rāmaṁ durvācyam asabhyāḥ puram āviśan

Śrī Badarayani said: O best of the Bharatas, thus intoxicated with the pride of high birth, kinship and wealth, those uncouth Kurus, having spoken such harsh words to Balarama, went back into their city.

Verse 30 (bhagavata.10.68.30)

dṛṣṭvā kurūnāṁ dauḥśīlyaṁ śrutvāvācyāni cācyutaḥ avocat kopa-saṁrabdho duṣprekṣyaḥ prahasan muhuḥ

Seeing the wicked conduct of the Kurus and hearing their abusive words, the infallible Balarama was filled with rage; His countenance now terrible to look upon, He laughed again and again and spoke as follows.

Verse 31 (bhagavata.10.68.31)

nūnaṁ nānā-madonnaddhāḥ śāntiṁ necchanty asādhavaḥ teṣāṁ hi praśamo daṇḍaḥ paśūnāṁ laguḍo yathā

Balarama said: "Truly these scoundrels, intoxicated by every kind of pride, do not desire peace. Such men are subdued only by punishment, just as animals are subdued by a stick."

Verse 32 (bhagavata.10.68.32)

aho yadūn su-saṁrabdhān kṛṣṇaṁ ca kupitaṁ śanaiḥ sāntvayitvāham eteṣāṁ śamam icchann ihāgataḥ

"Ah, only gradually did I calm the enraged Yadavas and Krishna Himself, who was also angered, and I came here desiring peace with these people."

Verse 33 (bhagavata.10.68.33)

ta ime manda-matayaḥ kalahābhiratāḥ khalāḥ taṁ mām avajñāya muhur durbhāṣān mānino ’bruvan

"Yet these dull-witted, quarrel-loving, wicked men, disregarding Me, kept speaking harsh words again and again out of sheer conceit."

Verse 34 (bhagavata.10.68.34)

nograsenaḥ kila vibhur bhoja-vṛṣṇy-andhakeśvaraḥ śakrādayo loka-pālā yasyādeśānuvartinaḥ

"Is Ugrasena, mighty lord of the Bhojas, Vrishnis and Andhakas — whose commands even Indra and the other guardians of the worlds obey — truly unfit to rule?"

Verse 35 (bhagavata.10.68.35)

sudharmākramyate yena pārijāto ’marāṅghripaḥ ānīya bhujyate so ’sau na kilādhyāsanārhaṇaḥ

"That very Krishna who occupies the Sudharma hall, and who brought the immortals' parijata tree here to enjoy it — is He truly unfit to sit upon a throne?"

Verse 36 (bhagavata.10.68.36)

yasya pāda-yugaṁ sākṣāc chrīr upāste ’khileśvarī sa nārhati kila śrīśo naradeva-paricchadān

"He whose two feet are personally served by Shri, mistress of the entire universe — is that lord of Shri truly undeserving of the emblems of kings?"

Verse 37 (bhagavata.10.68.37)

yasyāṅghri-paṅkaja-rajo ’khila-loka-pālair mauly-uttamair dhṛtam upāsita-tīrtha-tīrtham brahmā bhavo ’ham api yasya kalāḥ kalāyāḥ śrīś codvahema ciram asya nṛpāsanaṁ kva

"The dust of whose lotus feet all the guardians of the worlds bear upon their finest crowns, that dust which is itself the holiest of all holy places — of whom Brahma, Shiva, I myself and even Shri are but fractions of a fraction, and whose dust we too have long borne upon our heads — for Him, what is a mere royal throne?"

Verse 38 (bhagavata.10.68.38)

bhuñjate kurubhir dattaṁ bhū-khaṇḍaṁ vṛṣṇayaḥ kila upānahaḥ kila vayaṁ svayaṁ tu kuravaḥ śiraḥ

"Do we Vrishnis truly enjoy only whatever scrap of land the Kurus have given us? Are we mere sandals, while the Kurus themselves are the head?"

Verse 39 (bhagavata.10.68.39)

aho aiśvarya-mattānāṁ mattānām iva māninām asambaddhā giṛo rukṣāḥ kaḥ sahetānuśāsītā

"Ah, drunk with the pride of power, babbling incoherent and harsh words like men in a stupor — what true ruler would tolerate such talk?"

Verse 40 (bhagavata.10.68.40)

adya niṣkauravāṁ pṛthvīṁ kariṣyāmīty amarṣitaḥ gṛhītvā halam uttasthau dahann iva jagat-trayam

"This very day I shall rid the earth of the Kauravas!" So saying, enraged Balarama rose up, plow in hand, as though about to consume the three worlds in fire.

Verse 41 (bhagavata.10.68.41)

lāṅgalāgreṇa nagaram udvidārya gajāhvayam vicakarṣa sa gaṅgāyāṁ prahariṣyann amarṣitaḥ

In His fury He tore up the city of Hastinapura with the tip of His plow and began to drag it, meaning to hurl it into the Ganges.

Verse 42 (bhagavata.10.68.42)

jala-yānam ivāghūrṇaṁ gaṅgāyāṁ nagaraṁ patat ākṛṣyamāṇam ālokya kauravāḥ jāta-sambhramāḥ

Seeing their city, as it was dragged toward the Ganges, reeling and lurching like a boat about to sink, the Kauravas were struck with terror.

Verse 43 (bhagavata.10.68.43)

tam eva śaraṇaṁ jagmuḥ sa-kuṭumbā jijīviṣavaḥ sa-lakṣmaṇaṁ puras-kṛtya sāmbaṁ prāñjalayaḥ prabhum

Desperate to save their lives, they took refuge in Him alone, together with their families, and, placing Samba and Lakshmana in front, stood with joined palms before the Lord.

Verse 44 (bhagavata.10.68.44)

"You alone, Yourself without any support, are the cause of the world's creation, maintenance and dissolution. O Lord, they say that as You play, these worlds are mere playthings to You."

Verse 46 (bhagavata.10.68.46)

"O boundless one of a thousand heads, You alone bear this earthly sphere upon one of Your heads as mere play. And at the time of dissolution, You draw the whole universe into Your own being and remain, alone and without a second, as all that is left."

Verse 47 (bhagavata.10.68.47)

"O Lord, this anger of Yours is meant only to instruct everyone, not born of hatred or spite; upholding the mode of goodness, You are ever intent only on sustaining and protecting the world."

Verse 48 (bhagavata.10.68.48)

namas te sarva-bhūtātman sarva-śakti-dharāvyaya viśva-karman namas te ’stu tvāṁ vayaṁ śaraṇaṁ gatāḥ

"Obeisance to You, O soul of all beings, O undying wielder of every power, O maker of the universe — obeisance to You! We have come to You alone for refuge."

Verse 49 (bhagavata.10.68.49)

śrī-śuka uvāca evaṁ prapannaiḥ saṁvignair vepamānāyanair balaḥ prasāditaḥ su-prasanno mā bhaiṣṭety abhayaṁ dadau

Śrī Śuka said: Thus placated by the Kurus, terrified and trembling as they surrendered to Him, Balarama became fully appeased, and, saying "Do not fear," granted them freedom from fear.

Verse 50 (bhagavata.10.68.50)

duryodhanaḥ pāribarhaṁ kuñjarān ṣaṣṭi-hāyanān dadau ca dvādaśa-śatāny ayutāni turaṅgamān

Out of love for his daughter, Duryodhana gave as dowry twelve hundred sixty-year-old elephants and one hundred twenty thousand horses.

Verse 51 (bhagavata.10.68.51)

rathānāṁ ṣaṭ-sahasrāṇi raukmāṇāṁ sūrya-varcasām dāsīnāṁ niṣka-kaṇṭhīnāṁ sahasraṁ duhitṛ-vatsalaḥ

The daughter-loving Duryodhana also gave six thousand golden chariots gleaming like the sun, and a thousand handmaidens wearing golden neck-ornaments.

Then Balarama, the wielder of the plow, entered His own city and met His devoted kinsfolk, and in the assembly of the Yadu chiefs recounted all that had passed between Him and the Kurus.

Even to this day, that city is seen raised up along the southern bank of the Ganges, bearing witness to Balarama's might.
