Skandha 10 · Chapter 72
The Slaying of the Demon Jarasandha
Verse 1 (bhagavata.10.72.1)
śrī-śuka uvāca ekadā tu sabhā-madhya āsthito munibhir vṛtaḥ brāhmaṇaiḥ kṣatriyair vaiśyair bhrātṛbhiś ca yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
Shukadeva said: One day, seated in the midst of the assembly, surrounded by sages, brahmanas, kshatriyas, vaishyas and his own brothers, Yudhishthira —
Verse 2 (bhagavata.10.72.2)
ācāryaiḥ kula-vṛddhaiś ca jñāti-sambandhi-bāndhavaiḥ śṛṇvatām eva caiteṣām ābhāṣyedam uvāca ha
— together with his teachers, family elders, kinsfolk, relatives and friends, addressed Krishna as all of them listened, and spoke as follows.
Verse 3 (bhagavata.10.72.3)
śrī-yudhiṣṭhira uvāca kratu-rājena govinda rājasūyena pāvanīḥ yakṣye vibhūtīr bhavatas tat sampādaya naḥ prabho
Shri Yudhishthira said: O Govinda, through the king of sacrifices, the Rajasuya, I wish to worship your purifying glories. O Lord, please bring this about for us.
Verse 4 (bhagavata.10.72.4)
tvat-pāduke avirataṁ pari ye caranti dhyāyanty abhadra-naśane śucayo gṛṇanti vindanti te kamala-nābha bhavāpavargam āśāsate yadi ta āśiṣa īśa nānye
O lotus-naveled one, those who constantly attend upon your sandals, which destroy all that is inauspicious, meditating upon them and glorifying them with pure hearts, obtain freedom from material existence; and if they desire anything of this world besides, they attain that too — but no one else, O Lord, attains such things.
Verse 5 (bhagavata.10.72.5)
tad deva-deva bhavataś caraṇāravinda- sevānubhāvam iha paśyatu loka eṣaḥ ye tvāṁ bhajanti na bhajanty uta vobhayeṣāṁ niṣṭhāṁ pradarśaya vibho kuru-sṛñjayānām
Therefore, O God of gods, let the people of this world behold here the power of service rendered to your lotus feet. O almighty one, show them the fate of those among the Kurus and Srinjayas who worship you, and of those who do not.
Verse 6 (bhagavata.10.72.6)
O Soul of all beings, equal in vision to all and ever experiencing bliss within yourself, there can be no discrimination in you between "mine" and "another's." Like the celestial wish-fulfilling tree, your grace toward those who serve you arises in proportion to their service — never otherwise.
Verse 7 (bhagavata.10.72.7)
śrī-bhagavān uvāca samyag vyavasitaṁ rājan bhavatā śatru-karśana kalyāṇī yena te kīrtir lokān anubhaviṣyati
The Supreme Lord said: O King, O scourge of your enemies, your resolve is altogether right, and by it your auspicious fame will spread through all the worlds.
Verse 8 (bhagavata.10.72.8)
ṛṣīṇāṁ pitṛ-devānāṁ suhṛdām api naḥ prabho sarveṣām api bhūtānām īpsitaḥ kratu-rāḍ ayam
For the sages, the ancestors and the gods, and for Our well-wishers too, and indeed for all living beings, this king of sacrifices is something to be desired.
Verse 9 (bhagavata.10.72.9)
vijitya nṛpatīn sarvān kṛtvā ca jagatīṁ vaśe sambhṛtya sarva-sambhārān āharasva mahā-kratum
Having conquered all the kings and brought the earth under your control, and having gathered all the necessary paraphernalia, perform this great sacrifice.
Verse 10 (bhagavata.10.72.10)
ete te bhrātaro rājaḻ loka-pālāṁśa-sambhavāḥ jito ’smy ātmavatā te ’haṁ durjayo yo ’kṛtātmabhiḥ
O King, these brothers of yours are born of portions of the guardians of the universe; and you, being self-controlled, have conquered even Me — Me, who am unconquerable by those who lack self-control.
Verse 11 (bhagavata.10.72.11)
na kaścin mat-paraṁ loke tejasā yaśasā śriyā vibhūtibhir vābhibhaved devo ’pi kim u pārthivaḥ
In splendor, fame, fortune or opulence, no one in this world surpasses My devotee — not even a god, let alone an earthly king.
Verse 12 (bhagavata.10.72.12)
śrī-śuka uvāca niśamya bhagavad-gītaṁ prītaḥ phulla-mukhāmbujaḥ bhrātṝn dig-vijaye ’yuṅkta viṣṇu-tejopabṛṁhitān
Shukadeva said: Hearing these words spoken by the Lord, Yudhishthira, delighted, his lotus face blossoming with joy, dispatched his brothers — each empowered with a portion of Vishnu's own energy — to conquer every direction.
Verse 13 (bhagavata.10.72.13)
sahadevaṁ dakṣiṇasyām ādiśat saha sṛñjayaiḥ diśi pratīcyāṁ nakulam udīcyāṁ savyasācinam prācyāṁ vṛkodaraṁ matsyaiḥ kekayaiḥ saha madrakaiḥ
He directed Sahadeva, together with the Srinjayas, toward the south, Nakula toward the west, Savyasachi toward the north, and Vrikodara, with the Matsyas, Kekayas and Madrakas, toward the east.
Verse 14 (bhagavata.10.72.14)
te vijitya nṛpān vīrā ājahrur digbhya ojasā ajāta-śatrave bhūri draviṇaṁ nṛpa yakṣyate
Those heroes, having subdued the kings, brought back abundant wealth from every quarter through their own valor, O King, for the sake of Ajatashatru, who was intent on performing the sacrifice.
Verse 15 (bhagavata.10.72.15)
śrutvājitaṁ jarāsandhaṁ nṛpater dhyāyato hariḥ āhopāyaṁ tam evādya uddhavo yam uvāca ha
Hearing that Jarasandha remained unconquered and seeing the King absorbed in thought, Hari then spoke of that same means which Uddhava had earlier described.
Verse 16 (bhagavata.10.72.16)
bhīmaseno ’rjunaḥ kṛṣṇo brahma-linga-dharās trayaḥ jagmur girivrajaṁ tāta bṛhadratha-suto yataḥ
Bhimasena, Arjuna and Krishna, the three of them disguised as brahmanas, my dear King, went to the city of Girivraja, the home of the son of Brihadratha.
Verse 17 (bhagavata.10.72.17)
te gatvātithya-velāyāṁ gṛheṣu gṛha-medhinam brahmaṇyaṁ samayāceran rājanyā brahma-liṅginaḥ
Arriving there at the hour appointed for receiving guests, those princely warriors, disguised as brahmanas, made their request of the householder Jarasandha, who was ever devoted to brahmanas.
Verse 18 (bhagavata.10.72.18)
rājan viddhy atithīn prāptān arthino dūram āgatān tan naḥ prayaccha bhadraṁ te yad vayaṁ kāmayāmahe
[They said:] O King, know us to be guests who have come from afar, seeking charity. Grant us what we desire — may all good come to you.
Verse 19 (bhagavata.10.72.19)
kiṁ durmarṣaṁ titikṣūṇāṁ kim akāryam asādhubhiḥ kiṁ na deyaṁ vadānyānāṁ kaḥ paraḥ sama-darśinām
What is unbearable to the patient? What would the wicked hesitate to do? What would the generous not give away? And who is a stranger to those who see all with equal eyes?
Verse 20 (bhagavata.10.72.20)
yo ’nityena śarīreṇa satāṁ geyaṁ yaśo dhruvam nācinoti svayaṁ kalpaḥ sa vācyaḥ śocya eva saḥ
One who, though capable, fails to earn with his perishable body the imperishable fame that the virtuous sing of — such a one deserves censure; indeed, he is truly to be pitied.
Verse 21 (bhagavata.10.72.21)
hariścandro rantideva uñchavṛttiḥ śibir baliḥ vyādhaḥ kapoto bahavo hy adhruveṇa dhruvaṁ gatāḥ
Harishchandra, Rantideva, the one who lived by gleaning fallen grain, Shibi, Bali, and the hunter with the pigeon — many indeed have attained the eternal by means of the fleeting.
Verse 22 (bhagavata.10.72.22)
śrī-śuka uvāca svarair ākṛtibhis tāṁs tu prakoṣṭhair jyā-hatair api rājanya-bandhūn vijñāya dṛṣṭa-pūrvān acintayat
Shukadeva said: By their voices, their bearing, and the marks left by bowstrings on their forearms, Jarasandha recognized them as scions of royalty, and he began to think he had seen them somewhere before.
Verse 23 (bhagavata.10.72.23)
rājanya-bandhavo hy ete brahma-liṅgāni bibhrati dadāni bhikṣitaṁ tebhya ātmānam api dustyajam
[He thought:] These are surely scions of royalty wearing the marks of brahmanas; yet I shall give them whatever they beg of me, even my own body, hard as it is to relinquish.
Verse 24 (bhagavata.10.72.24)
baler nu śrūyate kīrtir vitatā dikṣv akalmaṣā aiśvaryād bhraṁśitasyāpi vipra-vyājena viṣṇunā
Bali's spotless fame is heard resounding in every direction, even though Vishnu, in the disguise of a brahmana, caused him to fall from his own prosperity.
Verse 25 (bhagavata.10.72.25)
śriyaṁ jihīrṣatendrasya viṣṇave dvija-rūpiṇe jānann api mahīm prādād vāryamāṇo ’pi daitya-rāṭ
Desiring to reclaim Bali's fortune on Indra's behalf, Vishnu came to him in the form of a brahmana; and though Bali knew the truth and was forbidden by his guru, the king of the demons gave away the earth all the same.
Verse 26 (bhagavata.10.72.26)
jīvatā brāhmaṇārthāya ko nv arthaḥ kṣatra-bandhunā dehena patamānena nehatā vipulaṁ yaśaḥ
What use, indeed, is a kshatriya who goes on living but not for the sake of brahmanas — his body destined to perish in any case — if he does not even strive to win abundant fame?
Verse 27 (bhagavata.10.72.27)
ity udāra-matiḥ prāha kṛṣṇārjuna-vṛkodarān he viprā vriyatāṁ kāmo dadāmy ātma-śiro ’pi vaḥ
Thus, with generous heart, Jarasandha said to Krishna, Arjuna and Vrikodara: "O brahmanas, ask for whatever you desire; I shall give it, even my own head."
Verse 28 (bhagavata.10.72.28)
śrī-bhagavān uvāca yuddhaṁ no dehi rājendra dvandvaśo yadi manyase yuddhārthino vayaṁ prāptā rājanyā nānya-kāṅkṣiṇaḥ
The Supreme Lord said: O lord of kings, grant us single combat, if you think it right. We princes have come here desiring battle, seeking nothing else.
Verse 29 (bhagavata.10.72.29)
asau vṛkodaraḥ pārthas tasya bhrātārjuno hy ayam anayor mātuleyaṁ māṁ kṛṣṇaṁ jānīhi te ripum
This is Vrikodara, son of Pritha; this is his brother Arjuna; and know me, their maternal cousin, to be Krishna, your enemy.
Verse 30 (bhagavata.10.72.30)
evam āvedito rājā jahāsoccaiḥ sma māgadhaḥ āha cāmarṣito mandā yuddhaṁ tarhi dadāmi vaḥ
Thus informed, the king of Magadha burst into loud laughter and, indignant, said: "You fools — then I shall give you the battle you seek!
Verse 31 (bhagavata.10.72.31)
na tvayā bhīruṇā yotsye yudhi viklava-tejasā mathurāṁ sva-purīṁ tyaktvā samudraṁ śaraṇaṁ gataḥ
"I will not fight with you, coward — your courage falters in battle; you abandoned your own city of Mathura and fled to take shelter in the sea.
Verse 32 (bhagavata.10.72.32)
ayaṁ tu vayasātulyo nāti-sattvo na me samaḥ arjuno na bhaved yoddhā bhīmas tulya-balo mama
"And this one here is neither my equal in years nor of great strength, nor a match for me — Arjuna should not be my opponent. Bhima alone is equal to me in strength."
Verse 33 (bhagavata.10.72.33)
ity uktvā bhīmasenāya prādāya mahatīṁ gadām dvitīyāṁ svayam ādāya nirjagāma purād bahiḥ
Having said this, he handed Bhimasena a massive club, took up a second one himself, and went out of the city.
Verse 34 (bhagavata.10.72.34)
tataḥ samekhale vīrau saṁyuktāv itaretaram jaghnatur vajra-kalpābhyāṁ gadābhyāṁ raṇa-durmadau
Then the two heroes, meeting on level ground, intoxicated with the fury of combat, began striking one another with their thunderbolt-like clubs.
Verse 35 (bhagavata.10.72.35)
maṇḍalāni vicitrāṇi savyaṁ dakṣiṇam eva ca caratoḥ śuśubhe yuddhaṁ naṭayor iva raṅgiṇoḥ
Circling each other in wondrous patterns, now left, now right, their combat shone like the performance of two dancers upon a stage.
Verse 36 (bhagavata.10.72.36)
tataś caṭa-caṭā-śabdo vajra-niṣpesa-sannibhaḥ gadayoḥ kṣiptayo rājan dantayor iva dantinoḥ
Then, O King, the crackling clash of their colliding clubs, resembling the crash of thunderbolts, sounded like the tusks of two battling elephants striking together.
Verse 37 (bhagavata.10.72.37)
te vai gade bhuja-javena nipātyamāne anyonyato ’ṁsa-kaṭi-pāda-karoru-jatrum cūrṇī-babhūvatur upetya yathārka-śākhe saṁyudhyator dviradayor iva dīpta-manvyoḥ
Brought down with the full force of their arms upon each other's shoulders, hips, feet, hands, thighs and collarbones, the two clubs were smashed to pieces, like the branches of arka trees shattered by two enraged elephants locked in combat.
Verse 38 (bhagavata.10.72.38)
itthaṁ tayoḥ prahatayor gadayor nṛ-vīrau kruddhau sva-muṣṭibhir ayaḥ-sparaśair apiṣṭām śabdas tayoḥ praharator ibhayor ivāsīn nirghāta-vajra-paruṣas tala-tāḍanotthaḥ
Thus, their clubs shattered, those two heroes among men, now enraged, began pummeling each other with fists hard as iron; the sound of their blows was as harsh as the crash of thunder, like that of two colliding elephants.
Verse 39 (bhagavata.10.72.39)
tayor evaṁ praharatoḥ sama-śikṣā-balaujasoḥ nirviśeṣam abhūd yuddham akṣīṇa-javayor nṛpa
As they fought on thus, equally matched in training, strength and vigor, O King, the battle reached no decision, for neither one's energy ever diminished.
Verse 40 (bhagavata.10.72.40)
śatror janma-mṛtī vidvāñ jīvitaṁ ca jarā-kṛtam pārtham āpyāyayan svena tejasācintayad dhariḥ
Hari, who knew the secret of His enemy's birth and death, and how his life had come together through the demoness Jara, then reflected on this and infused Bhima with His own divine power.
Verse 41 (bhagavata.10.72.41)
sañcintyārī-vadhopāyaṁ bhīmasyāmogha-darśanaḥ darśayām āsa viṭapaṁ pāṭayann iva saṁjñayā
Having pondered the means of slaying the enemy, Krishna, whose every glance is unfailing, showed Bhima a sign, tearing a branch in two as if to demonstrate.
Verse 42 (bhagavata.10.72.42)
tad vijñāya mahā-sattvo bhīmaḥ praharatāṁ varaḥ gṛhītvā pādayoḥ śatruṁ pātayām āsa bhū-tale
Understanding the sign, the mighty Bhima, foremost among fighters, seized his enemy by the feet and dashed him down upon the ground.
Verse 43 (bhagavata.10.72.43)
ekam pādaṁ padākramya dorbhyām anyaṁ pragṛhya saḥ gudataḥ pāṭayām āsa śākham iva mahā-gajaḥ
Pressing one of Jarasandha's legs down with his own foot and gripping the other with both hands, Bhima tore him apart from the anus upward, just as a great elephant might split a branch in two.
Verse 44 (bhagavata.10.72.44)
eka-pādoru-vṛṣaṇa- kaṭi-pṛṣṭha-stanāṁsake eka-bāhv-akṣi-bhrū-karṇe śakale dadṛśuḥ prajāḥ
The people beheld the two halves of his body — each with a single leg, thigh, testicle, hip, half a back, half a chest, one shoulder, one arm, one eye, one eyebrow and one ear.
Verse 45 (bhagavata.10.72.45)
hāhā-kāro mahān āsīn nihate magadheśvare pūjayām āsatur bhīmaṁ parirabhya jayācyatau
A great cry of lamentation arose at the slaying of the lord of Magadha; and Jaya and Achyuta embraced Bhima and honored him.
Verse 46 (bhagavata.10.72.46)
sahadevaṁ tat-tanayaṁ bhagavān bhūta-bhāvanaḥ abhyaṣiñcad ameyātmā magadhānāṁ patiṁ prabhuḥ mocayām āsa rājanyān saṁruddhā māgadhena ye
The Supreme Lord, of immeasurable being and the sustainer of all creatures, then enthroned Jarasandha's son Sahadeva as king of Magadha, and He set free all the kings whom the lord of Magadha had held captive.
