The Lord Travels to Indraprastha

Chapter 70All chaptersChapter 72

Verse 1 (bhagavata.10.71.1)

śrī-śuka uvāca ity udīritam ākarṇya devaṛṣer uddhavo ’bravīt sabhyānāṁ matam ājñāya kṛṣṇasya ca mahā-matiḥ

Shukadeva said: Having heard these words spoken by the divine sage, and understanding the intent of both the assembly and Krishna, the wise Uddhava began to speak.

Verse 2 (bhagavata.10.71.2)

śrī-uddhava uvāca yad uktam ṛṣinā deva sācivyaṁ yakṣyatas tvayā kāryaṁ paitṛ-ṣvasreyasya rakṣā ca śaraṇaiṣiṇām

Shri Uddhava said: O Lord, as the sage has advised, you should render this service to your paternal aunt's son, who is about to perform the sacrifice, and you should also protect those kings who seek your shelter.

Verse 3 (bhagavata.10.71.3)

yaṣṭavyam rājasūyena dik-cakra-jayinā vibho ato jarā-suta-jaya ubhayārtho mato mama

O almighty one, only one who has conquered every quarter of the earth may perform the Rajasuya. Therefore, in my judgment, the conquest of Jarasandha will accomplish both purposes at once.

Verse 4 (bhagavata.10.71.4)

asmākaṁ ca mahān artho hy etenaiva bhaviṣyati yaśaś ca tava govinda rājño baddhān vimuñcataḥ

By this one act, O Govinda, great good will come to us as well, and you will win fame as the one who freed the captive kings.

Verse 5 (bhagavata.10.71.5)

That king is indeed unbearable, equal in strength to ten thousand elephants; among all the mighty, none but Bhima matches him in power.

Verse 6 (bhagavata.10.71.6)

He can be conquered only in one-on-one combat, not when surrounded by his hundred divisions. Being devoted to brahmanas, he never refuses a request made by them.

Verse 7 (bhagavata.10.71.7)

brahma-veṣa-dharo gatvā taṁ bhikṣeta vṛkodaraḥ haniṣyati na sandeho dvai-rathe tava sannidhau

Let Vrikodara go there disguised as a brahmana and beg single combat from him as alms; in your presence he will surely slay him in that duel — of this there is no doubt.

Verse 8 (bhagavata.10.71.8)

nimittaṁ param īśasya viśva-sarga-nirodhayoḥ hiraṇyagarbhaḥ śarvaś ca kālasyārūpiṇas tava

Even Hiranyagarbha and Sharva are but instrumental causes in the creation and dissolution of the universe — instruments of you, the Supreme Lord, who in your unmanifest aspect are Time itself.

Verse 9 (bhagavata.10.71.9)

gāyanti te viśada-karma gṛheṣu devyo rājñāṁ sva-śatru-vadham ātma-vimokṣaṇaṁ ca gopyaś ca kuñjara-pater janakātmajāyāḥ pitroś ca labdha-śaraṇā munayo vayaṁ ca

In their homes, the noble wives of the kings sing of your radiant deeds — the slaying of their enemy and their own deliverance. The gopis sing of your rescue of the king of elephants, of Janaka's daughter, and of your own parents; and we sages too, who have found shelter in you, sing your glories.

Verse 10 (bhagavata.10.71.10)

jarāsandha-vadhaḥ kṛṣṇa bhūry-arthāyopakalpate prāyaḥ pāka-vipākena tava cābhimataḥ kratuḥ

O Krishna, the death of Jarasandha will serve a great many purposes. Indeed, coming as the fitting fruit of his own past deeds, it will also bring about the very sacrifice that you desire.

Verse 11 (bhagavata.10.71.11)

śrī-śuka uvāca ity uddhava-vaco rājan sarvato-bhadram acyutam devarṣir yadu-vṛddhāś ca kṛṣṇaś ca pratyapūjayan

Shukadeva said: O King, hearing this speech of Uddhava — wholly auspicious and unfailing — the divine sage Narada, the elders of the Yadu clan, and Krishna Himself all honored it.

Verse 12 (bhagavata.10.71.12)

athādiśat prayāṇāya bhagavān devakī-sutaḥ bhṛtyān dāruka-jaitrādīn anujñāpya gurūn vibhuḥ

Thereafter the mighty Lord, son of Devaki, having taken leave of His elders, ordered His servants headed by Daruka and Jaitra to prepare for the journey.

Verse 13 (bhagavata.10.71.13)

nirgamayyāvarodhān svān sa-sutān sa-paricchadān saṅkarṣaṇam anujñāpya yadu-rājaṁ ca śatru-han sūtopanītaṁ sva-ratham āruhad garuḍa-dhvajam

O slayer of enemies, having first sent forth His queens with their children and belongings, and having taken leave of Sankarshana and the Yadu king, the Lord mounted His own chariot, marked with the banner of Garuda, which His charioteer had brought.

Verse 14 (bhagavata.10.71.14)

tato ratha-dvipa-bhaṭa-sādi-nāyakaiḥ karālayā parivṛta ātma-senayā mṛdaṅga-bhery-ānaka-śaṅkha-gomukhaiḥ praghoṣa-ghoṣita-kakubho nirakramat

Then, surrounded by His formidable personal army with its commanders of chariots, elephants, infantry and cavalry, the Lord set forth, the horizons resounding with the tumultuous din of mridangas, bheris, anakas, conches and gomukha horns.

Verse 15 (bhagavata.10.71.15)

nṛ-vāji-kāñcana-śibikābhir acyutaṁ sahātmajāḥ patim anu su-vratā yayuḥ varāmbarābharaṇa-vilepana-srajaḥ su-saṁvṛtā nṛbhir asi-carma-pāṇibhiḥ

The devoted queens, together with their children, followed their lord Achyuta on golden palanquins; adorned with fine garments, ornaments, fragrant unguents and garlands, and closely guarded by men bearing swords and shields.

Verse 16 (bhagavata.10.71.16)

naroṣṭra-go-mahiṣa-kharāśvatary-anaḥ kareṇubhiḥ parijana-vāra-yoṣitaḥ sv-alaṅkṛtāḥ kaṭa-kuṭi-kambalāmbarādy- upaskarā yayur adhiyujya sarvataḥ

Mounted on men, camels, cows, buffalo, donkeys, mules, carts and she-elephants, the finely adorned female attendants and courtesans traveled on every side, their conveyances laden with mats, tents, blankets, garments and other baggage.

Verse 17 (bhagavata.10.71.17)

balaṁ bṛhad-dhvaja-paṭa-chatra-cāmarair varāyudhābharaṇa-kirīṭa-varmabhiḥ divāṁśubhis tumula-ravaṁ babhau raver yathārṇavaḥ kṣubhita-timiṅgilormibhiḥ

With its towering flags, cloth banners, umbrellas and yak-tail fans, and adorned with fine weapons, jewelry, crowns and armor, the army, resounding with tumultuous noise, shone in the sun's rays like an ocean churned up with agitated whales and waves.

Verse 18 (bhagavata.10.71.18)

atho munir yadu-patinā sabhājitaḥ praṇamya taṁ hṛdi vidadhad vihāyasā niśamya tad-vyavasitam āhṛtārhaṇo mukunda-sandaraśana-nirvṛtendriyaḥ

Then the sage, honored by the lord of the Yadus, bowed down to Him and, holding Him in his heart, departed through the sky. Having heard the Lord's decision and having been duly worshiped, his very senses found fulfillment in the sight of Mukunda.

Verse 19 (bhagavata.10.71.19)

rāja-dūtam uvācedaṁ bhagavān prīṇayan girā mā bhaiṣṭa dūta bhadraṁ vo ghātayiṣyāmi māgadham

Pleasing him with gentle words, the Lord spoke thus to the messenger of the kings: "Do not fear, O messenger; may all be well with you. I shall bring about the death of the king of Magadha."

Verse 20 (bhagavata.10.71.20)

ity uktaḥ prasthito dūto yathā-vad avadan nṛpān te ’pi sandarśanaṁ śaureḥ pratyaikṣan yan mumukṣavaḥ

Thus addressed, the messenger departed and duly related the news to the kings, who, longing for liberation, then waited eagerly for the sight of Shauri.

Verse 21 (bhagavata.10.71.21)

ānarta-sauvīra-marūṁs tīrtvā vinaśanaṁ hariḥ girīn nadīr atīyāya pura-grāma-vrajākarān

Having crossed Anarta, Sauvira, the desert lands and Vinashana, Hari passed over mountains and rivers, and through cities, villages, pasturing-grounds and mines.

Verse 22 (bhagavata.10.71.22)

tato dṛṣadvatīṁ tīrtvā mukundo ’tha sarasvatīm pañcālān atha matsyāṁś ca śakra-prastham athāgamat

Then, having crossed the rivers Drishadvati and Sarasvati, Mukunda passed through the lands of Panchala and Matsya and arrived at Shakraprastha.

Verse 23 (bhagavata.10.71.23)

tam upāgatam ākarṇya prīto durdarśanaṁ nṛnām ajāta-śatrur niragāt sopadhyāyaḥ suhṛd-vṛtaḥ

Hearing that He, so rarely seen by men, had arrived, the joyful Ajatashatru went forth, accompanied by his priests and surrounded by his well-wishers.

Verse 24 (bhagavata.10.71.24)

gīta-vāditra-ghoṣeṇa brahma-ghoṣeṇa bhūyasā abhyayāt sa hṛṣīkeśaṁ prāṇāḥ prāṇam ivādṛtaḥ

Amid the sound of songs and instruments and the abundant chanting of Vedic hymns, he advanced toward Hrishikesha with the greatest reverence, as the vital airs rush forth to meet life itself.

Verse 25 (bhagavata.10.71.25)

dṛṣṭvā viklinna-hṛdayaḥ kṛṣṇaṁ snehena pāṇḍavaḥ cirād dṛṣṭaṁ priyatamaṁ sasvaje ’tha punaḥ punaḥ

Seeing Krishna, the heart of the Pandava melted with love; having beheld his dearest one after so long a separation, he embraced Him again and again.

Verse 26 (bhagavata.10.71.26)

dorbhyāṁ pariṣvajya ramāmalālayaṁ mukunda-gātraṁ nṛ-patir hatāśubhaḥ lebhe parāṁ nirvṛtim aśru-locano hṛṣyat-tanur vismṛta-loka-vibhramaḥ

Embracing with both arms the form of Mukunda, the immaculate abode of the goddess Rama, the king, freed from all misfortune, attained supreme bliss; tears filled his eyes, his body thrilled with ecstasy, and he forgot entirely the illusion of the world.

Verse 27 (bhagavata.10.71.27)

taṁ mātuleyaṁ parirabhya nirvṛto bhīmaḥ smayan prema-jalākulendriyaḥ yamau kirīṭī ca suhṛttamaṁ mudā pravṛddha-bāṣpāḥ parirebhire ’cyutam

Bhima, overjoyed, smiled as he embraced his maternal cousin, his senses overwhelmed with tears of love; the twins and Kiriti too joyfully embraced their dearest friend Achyuta, their tears flowing freely.

Verse 28 (bhagavata.10.71.28)

arjunena pariṣvakto yamābhyām abhivāditaḥ brāhmaṇebhyo namaskṛtya vṛddhebhyaś ca yathārhataḥ mānino mānayām āsa kuru-sṛñjaya-kaikayān

Embraced by Arjuna and greeted by the twins, and having duly bowed to the brahmanas and elders present, Krishna, Himself worthy of all honor, in turn honored the proud nobles of the Kuru, Srinjaya and Kaikaya clans.

Verse 29 (bhagavata.10.71.29)

sūta-māgadha-gandharvā vandinaś copamantriṇaḥ mṛdaṅga-śaṅkha-paṭaha vīṇā-paṇava-gomukhaiḥ brāhmaṇāś cāravindākṣaṁ tuṣṭuvur nanṛtur jaguḥ

Sutas, Magadhas, Gandharvas, court bards and counselors, together with the sound of mridangas, conches, drums, vinas, panavas and gomukhas, and the brahmanas as well, glorified the lotus-eyed Lord — some dancing, some singing His praise.

Verse 30 (bhagavata.10.71.30)

evaṁ suhṛdbhiḥ paryastaḥ puṇya-śloka-śikhāmaṇiḥ saṁstūyamāno bhagavān viveśālaṅkṛtaṁ puram

Thus surrounded by His well-wishers and praised on every side, the Lord, the crest-jewel among those of pure and celebrated renown, entered the beautifully adorned city.

Verse 31 (bhagavata.10.71.31)

Its roadways sprinkled with water fragrant with the ichor from elephants' temples, and adorned with colorful flags, golden festive arches and brimming water-pots, the city gleamed with men and young women beautifully arrayed in fresh garments, ornaments, garlands and fragrant scents.

Verse 32 (bhagavata.10.71.32)

uddīpta-dīpa-balibhiḥ prati-sadma jāla niryāta-dhūpa-ruciraṁ vilasat-patākam mūrdhanya-hema-kalaśai rajatoru-śṛṅgair juṣṭaṁ dadarśa bhavanaiḥ kuru-rāja-dhāma

Bright with glowing lamps and offerings at every threshold, charming with the fragrance of incense drifting from the latticed windows, and crowned with golden pinnacles rising from broad silver bases — thus Krishna beheld the royal abode of the King of the Kurus.

Verse 33 (bhagavata.10.71.33)

Hearing that He who is a vessel of delight for human eyes had arrived, the young women — the knots of their hair and garments coming loose in their eagerness — at once abandoned their household chores, leaving even their husbands still in bed, and hurried out onto the royal road to see Him.

Verse 34 (bhagavata.10.71.34)

The royal road being densely crowded with elephants, horses, chariots and foot soldiers, the women climbed to the rooftops of their houses; catching sight of Krishna together with His queen, they scattered flowers, embraced Him in their hearts, and welcomed Him warmly with wondering, smiling glances.

Verse 35 (bhagavata.10.71.35)

Seeing on the road the wives of Mukunda, like stars accompanying the moon, the women exclaimed: "What have these women done, that the crest-jewel among men grants to their eyes this festival of His generous smile and playful glance?"

Verse 36 (bhagavata.10.71.36)

Here and there the citizens came forward, auspicious offerings in hand; the sinless chiefs of the merchant guilds performed worship of Krishna.

Verse 37 (bhagavata.10.71.37)

Welcomed with love and eager delight by the wide-eyed women of the inner household, Mukunda entered the royal palace.

pṛthā vilokya bhrātreyaṁ kṛṣṇaṁ tri-bhuvaneśvaram prītātmotthāya paryaṅkāt sa-snuṣā pariṣasvaje

Seeing her nephew Krishna, lord of the three worlds, Pritha's heart filled with love; rising from her couch together with her daughter-in-law, she embraced Him.

Verse 39 (bhagavata.10.71.39)

govindaṁ gṛham ānīya deva-deveśam ādṛtaḥ pūjāyāṁ nāvidat kṛtyaṁ pramodopahato nṛpaḥ

Bringing Govinda, the God of gods, into his home with the greatest reverence, the King, overwhelmed with joy, could not recall what rites of worship to perform.

Verse 40 (bhagavata.10.71.40)

pitṛ-svasur guru-strīṇāṁ kṛṣṇaś cakre ’bhivādanam svayaṁ ca kṛṣṇayā rājan bhaginyā cābhivanditaḥ

Krishna bowed down to His paternal aunt and to the wives of the elders; and He Himself, O King, was in turn greeted by Krishna and by His own sister.

Verse 41 (bhagavata.10.71.41)

śvaśṛvā sañcoditā kṛṣṇā kṛṣṇa-patnīś ca sarvaśaḥ ānarca rukmiṇīṁ satyāṁ bhadrāṁ jāmbavatīṁ tathā

At her mother-in-law's urging, Draupadi honored, one by one, all of Krishna's queens — Rukmini, Satya, Bhadra, and Jambavati as well.

Verse 42 (bhagavata.10.71.42)

And Kalindi, Mitravinda, Shaibya and the chaste Nagnajiti; and the other queens who were present as well — all were honored with gifts of garments, garlands, ornaments and the like.

Verse 43 (bhagavata.10.71.43)

sukhaṁ nivāsayām āsa dharma-rājo janārdanam sa-sainyaṁ sānugāmatyaṁ sa-bhāryaṁ ca navaṁ navam

The King of Dharma happily lodged Janardana, together with His army, attendants, ministers and queen, offering fresh comforts and hospitality anew each day.

Verse 44 (bhagavata.10.71.44)

tarpayitvā khāṇḍavena vahniṁ phālguna-saṁyutaḥ mocayitvā mayaṁ yena rājñe divyā sabhā kṛtā

Together with Phalguna, He satisfied the fire-god Vahni with the Khandava forest, and delivered Maya Danava from that fire, who in turn built a celestial assembly hall for the King.

Verse 45 (bhagavata.10.71.45)
