Lord Krishna's Daily Activities

Chapter 69All chaptersChapter 71

Verse 1 (bhagavata.10.70.1)

śrī-śuka uvāca athoṣasy upavṛttāyāṁ kukkuṭān kūjato ’śapan gṛhīta-kaṇṭhyaḥ patibhir mādhavyo virahāturāḥ

Śrī Śuka said: As dawn drew near, Madhava's wives, each held close about the neck by her husband, distressed at the coming separation, would curse the crowing roosters.

Verse 2 (bhagavata.10.70.2)

vayāṁsy aroruvan kṛṣṇaṁ bodhayantīva vandinaḥ gāyatsv aliṣv anidrāṇi mandāra-vana-vāyubhiḥ

Roused by the breeze blowing from the mandara grove, the birds, along with the humming bees, would cry out loudly, as if court bards were waking Krishna.

Verse 3 (bhagavata.10.70.3)

muhūrtaṁ taṁ tu vaidarbhī nāmṛṣyad ati-śobhanam parirambhaṇa-viśleṣāt priya-bāhv-antaraṁ gatā

Even that most auspicious hour did not please Vaidarbhi, lost as she was in her beloved's embrace, for it meant separation from His arms.

Verse 4 (bhagavata.10.70.4)

brāhme muhūrta utthāya vāry upaspṛśya mādhavaḥ dadhyau prasanna-karaṇa ātmānaṁ tamasaḥ param

Madhava would rise at the auspicious hour before dawn, touch water, and, with a serene mind, meditate upon His own self, beyond all darkness.

Verse 5 (bhagavata.10.70.5)

ekaṁ svayaṁ-jyotir ananyam avyayaṁ sva-saṁsthayā nitya-nirasta-kalmaṣam brahmākhyam asyodbhava-nāśa-hetubhiḥ sva-śaktibhir lakṣita-bhāva-nirvṛtim

He would meditate on the one self-luminous, unrivaled, imperishable being, ever free of taint by His own nature, known as Brahman, who through His own energies, the cause of this world's arising and dissolution, reveals His own state of blissful existence.

Verse 6 (bhagavata.10.70.6)

athāpluto ’mbhasy amale yathā-vidhi kriyā-kalāpaṁ paridhāya vāsasī cakāra sandhyopagamādi sattamo hutānalo brahma jajāpa vāg-yataḥ

Then that most saintly one would bathe in pure water, put on His garments, and duly perform the entire round of rituals beginning with the twilight worship; having offered oblations into the fire, He would silently recite the Vedic mantra.

Verse 7 (bhagavata.10.70.7)

upasthāyārkam udyantaṁ tarpayitvātmanaḥ kalāḥ devān ṛṣīn pitṝn vṛddhān viprān abhyarcya cātmavān

Worshiping the rising sun and offering libations to the gods, sages and forefathers — all His own expansions — the self-controlled Lord would then worship the elders and the brahmanas.

Verse 8 (bhagavata.10.70.8)

dhenūnāṁ rukma-śṛṅgīnāṁ sādhvīnāṁ mauktika-srajām payasvinīnāṁ gṛṣṭīnāṁ sa-vatsānāṁ su-vāsasām

He would present them with cows of gentle temper, their horns gilded, adorned with pearl garlands, richly yielding milk, each having calved but once, accompanied by their calves and draped in fine cloth.

Verse 9 (bhagavata.10.70.9)

dadau rūpya-khurāgrāṇāṁ kṣaumājina-tilaiḥ saha alaṅkṛtebhyo viprebhyo badvaṁ badvaṁ dine dine

Their hoof-tips plated with silver, He would give herd after herd of such cows, together with fine linen, deerskins and sesame seeds, to the adorned brahmanas, day after day.

Verse 10 (bhagavata.10.70.10)

go-vipra-devatā-vṛddha- gurūn bhūtāni sarvaśaḥ namaskṛtyātma-sambhūtīr maṅgalāni samaspṛśat

Bowing to the cows, brahmanas, gods, elders, teachers and all beings — all of them His own manifestations — He would then touch auspicious objects.

Verse 11 (bhagavata.10.70.11)

ātmānaṁ bhūṣayām āsa nara-loka-vibhūṣaṇam vāsobhir bhūṣaṇaiḥ svīyair divya-srag-anulepanaiḥ

He would adorn His own body — itself the very ornament of humankind — with His own robes, jewels, divine garlands and fragrant unguents.

Verse 12 (bhagavata.10.70.12)

avekṣyājyaṁ tathādarśaṁ go-vṛṣa-dvija-devatāḥ kāmāṁś ca sarva-varṇānāṁ paurāntaḥ-pura-cāriṇām pradāpya prakṛtīḥ kāmaiḥ pratoṣya pratyanandata

Having looked upon ghee, a mirror, cows, bulls, brahmanas and deities, and having seen the desires of all the classes of people living in the city and the palace fulfilled, He would satisfy His ministers by granting their wishes and then greet them warmly.

Verse 13 (bhagavata.10.70.13)

saṁvibhajyāgrato viprān srak-tāmbūlānulepanaiḥ suhṛdaḥ prakṛtīr dārān upāyuṅkta tataḥ svayam

Distributing garlands, betel and sandal paste first to the brahmanas, then to His friends, ministers and wives, only afterward would He Himself partake of them.

Verse 14 (bhagavata.10.70.14)

tāvat sūta upānīya syandanaṁ paramādbhutam sugrīvādyair hayair yuktaṁ praṇamyāvasthito ’grataḥ

Meanwhile His charioteer would bring forward His supremely wondrous chariot, yoked to Sugriva and the other horses, and, bowing, would stand before Him.

Verse 15 (bhagavata.10.70.15)

gṛhītvā pāṇinā pāṇī sārathes tam athāruhat sātyaky-uddhava-saṁyuktaḥ pūrvādrim iva bhāskaraḥ

Taking His charioteer's hand in His own, He would mount that chariot, together with Satyaki and Uddhava, just as the sun rises over the eastern mountain.

Verse 16 (bhagavata.10.70.16)

īkṣito ’ntaḥ-pura-strīṇāṁ sa-vrīḍa-prema-vīkṣitaiḥ kṛcchrād visṛṣṭo niragāj jāta-hāso haran manaḥ

The women of the inner quarters would gaze upon Him with shy, loving eyes, and only with difficulty would He be released by them; smiling, and stealing their hearts, He would then go forth.

Verse 17 (bhagavata.10.70.17)

sudharmākhyāṁ sabhāṁ sarvair vṛṣṇibhiḥ parivāritaḥ prāviśad yan-niviṣṭānāṁ na santy aṅga ṣaḍ ūrmayaḥ

Surrounded by all the Vrishnis, He would enter the assembly hall called Sudharma, O King, where the six waves of bodily life cannot touch those seated within it.

Verse 18 (bhagavata.10.70.18)

tatropavistaḥ paramāsane vibhur babhau sva-bhāsā kakubho ’vabhāsayan vṛto nṛ-siṁhair yadubhir yadūttamo yathoḍu-rājo divi tārakā-gaṇaiḥ

Seated there upon His exalted throne, the almighty Lord shone forth, illumining every quarter with His own splendor; that best of the Yadus, surrounded by the lion-like Yadus, appeared like the moon amid its host of stars in the sky.

Verse 19 (bhagavata.10.70.19)

tatropamantriṇo rājan nānā-hāsya-rasair vibhum upatasthur naṭācāryā nartakyas tāṇḍavaiḥ pṛthak

O King, there jesters entertained the Lord with many kinds of comic humor, masters of the dramatic arts displayed their skill, and dancing girls performed vigorous dances, each in her turn.

Verse 20 (bhagavata.10.70.20)

mṛdaṅga-vīṇā-muraja- veṇu-tāla-dara-svanaiḥ nanṛtur jagus tuṣṭuvuś ca sūta-māgadha-vandinaḥ

To the sounds of drums, vinas, murajas, flutes, cymbals and conches they danced and sang, while bards, chroniclers and panegyrists sang His praises.

Verse 21 (bhagavata.10.70.21)

tatrāhur brāhmaṇāḥ kecid āsīnā brahma-vādinaḥ pūrveṣāṁ puṇya-yaśasāṁ rājñāṁ cākathayan kathāḥ

In that assembly some Vedic brahmanas, seated there, recited the Vedic mantras, while others told stories of kings of old, renowned for their piety.

Verse 22 (bhagavata.10.70.22)

tatraikaḥ puruṣo rājann āgato ’pūrva-darśanaḥ vijñāpito bhagavate pratīhāraiḥ praveśitaḥ

O King, at that moment a man arrived there, one never seen before. The doorkeepers announced him to the Lord and admitted him within.

Verse 23 (bhagavata.10.70.23)

sa namaskṛtya kṛṣṇāya pareśāya kṛtāñjaliḥ rājñām āvedayad duḥkhaṁ jarāsandha-nirodha-jam

He bowed to Krishna, the Supreme Lord, and, with joined palms, related the suffering of the kings held captive by Jarasandha.

Verse 24 (bhagavata.10.70.24)

ye ca dig-vijaye tasya sannatiṁ na yayur nṛpāḥ prasahya ruddhās tenāsann ayute dve girivraje

Those kings who had refused to bow before him during his conquest of the quarters had been forcibly seized and imprisoned, twenty thousand of them, in the fortress called Girivraja.

Verse 25 (bhagavata.10.70.25)

rājāna ūcuḥ kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇāprameyātman prapanna-bhaya-bhañjana vayaṁ tvāṁ śaraṇaṁ yāmo bhava-bhītāḥ pṛthag-dhiyaḥ

The kings said: O Krishna, Krishna, O immeasurable Soul, destroyer of the fears of the surrendered! Terrified of worldly existence, though our minds have long been divided, we now come to You for refuge.

Verse 26 (bhagavata.10.70.26)

loko vikarma-nirataḥ kuśale pramattaḥ karmaṇy ayaṁ tvad-udite bhavad-arcane sve yas tāvad asya balavān iha jīvitāśāṁ sadyaś chinatty animiṣāya namo ’stu tasmai

People of this world remain engrossed in forbidden deeds, careless of that one truly beneficial act, worship of You, which You Yourself have proclaimed. To that mighty, unblinking one who instantly severs a creature's hope of long life here, let there be our obeisance.

Verse 27 (bhagavata.10.70.27)

loke bhavāñ jagad-inaḥ kalayāvatīrṇaḥ sad-rakṣaṇāya khala-nigrahaṇāya cānyaḥ kaścit tvadīyam atiyāti nideśam īśa kiṁ vā janaḥ sva-kṛtam ṛcchati tan na vidmaḥ

O lord of the universe, You descend into this world by Your own power to protect the righteous and to subdue the wicked. O Lord, we do not know how anyone could transgress Your command, nor do we understand whether it is merely his own deeds that a man reaps.

Verse 28 (bhagavata.10.70.28)

svapnāyitaṁ nṛpa-sukhaṁ para-tantram īśa śaśvad-bhayena mṛtakena dhuraṁ vahāmaḥ hitvā tad ātmani sukhaṁ tvad-anīha-labhyaṁ kliśyāmahe ’ti-kṛpaṇās tava māyayeha

O Lord, the happiness of kings is like a dream, dependent on others; ever fearful, we bear the burden of this corpse-like body. Having abandoned the true happiness of the self, which is attained without effort through You, we, most wretched, suffer here under the sway of Your illusory power.

Verse 29 (bhagavata.10.70.29)

tan no bhavān praṇata-śoka-harāṅghri-yugmo baddhān viyuṅkṣva magadhāhvaya-karma-pāśāt yo bhū-bhujo ’yuta-mataṅgaja-vīryam eko bibhrad rurodha bhavane mṛga-rāḍ ivāvīḥ

Therefore, O You whose two feet remove the sorrow of those who bow before them, release us bound ones from the snare wrought by the king called Magadha, who, alone possessed of the might of ten thousand elephants, has caged us in his house just as a lion pens up sheep.

Verse 30 (bhagavata.10.70.30)

yo vai tvayā dvi-nava-kṛtva udātta-cakra bhagno mṛdhe khalu bhavantam ananta-vīryam jitvā nṛ-loka-nirataṁ sakṛd ūḍha-darpo yuṣmat-prajā rujati no ’jita tad vidhehi

O bearer of the exalted discus, of boundless might, whom You seventeen times crushed in battle, yet whom, being absorbed in Your human pastime, You once let defeat You — swollen with pride from that single victory, he now oppresses us, Your own subjects. O unconquered one, set this right.

Verse 31 (bhagavata.10.70.31)

dūta uvāca iti māgadha-saṁruddhā bhavad-darśana-kaṅkṣiṇaḥ prapannāḥ pāda-mūlaṁ te dīnānāṁ śaṁ vidhīyatām

The messenger said: Thus have those kings, held captive by the lord of Magadha and longing for a sight of You, come to take refuge at Your feet. O Lord, grant well-being to these wretched ones.

Verse 32 (bhagavata.10.70.32)

śrī-śuka uvāca rāja-dūte bruvaty evaṁ devarṣiḥ parama-dyutiḥ bibhrat piṅga-jaṭā-bhāraṁ prādurāsīd yathā raviḥ

While the kings' messenger was still speaking, the supremely radiant celestial sage Narada, bearing a mass of tawny matted hair, appeared there like the sun.

Verse 33 (bhagavata.10.70.33)

taṁ dṛṣṭvā bhagavān kṛṣṇaḥ sarva-lokeśvareśvaraḥ vavanda utthitaḥ śīrṣṇā sa-sabhyaḥ sānugo mudā

The Supreme Lord Krishna, master even of the masters of all the worlds, on seeing him, rose at once with joy, together with His courtiers and attendants, and bowed His head to him in homage.

Verse 34 (bhagavata.10.70.34)

sabhājayitvā vidhi-vat kṛtāsana-parigraham babhāṣe sunṛtair vākyaiḥ śraddhayā tarpayan munim

Having duly honored Narada once he had taken his seat, and gratifying him with reverence, Krishna addressed him in sweet and truthful words.

Verse 35 (bhagavata.10.70.35)

api svid adya lokānāṁ trayāṇām akuto-bhayam nanu bhūyān bhagavato lokān paryaṭato guṇaḥ

The Lord said: Surely today the three worlds have become free of every fear, for such indeed is the great virtue of a great soul like yourself, who wanders through all the worlds.

Verse 36 (bhagavata.10.70.36)

Nothing whatsoever in these worlds, fashioned by the Lord, is unknown to you. So We ask you — what do the Pandavas intend to do?

Verse 37 (bhagavata.10.70.37)

śrī-nārada uvāca dṛṣṭā māyā te bahuśo duratyayā māyā vibho viśva-sṛjaś ca māyinaḥ bhūteṣu bhūmaṁś carataḥ sva-śaktibhir vahner iva cchanna-ruco na me ’dbhutam

Narada said: O mighty one, I have seen many times Your insurmountable maya, by which You bewilder even Brahma, the creator of the universe, himself a master of illusion. O all-pervading one, that You should thus move among created beings, veiling Yourself by Your own powers, just as fire conceals its own light with smoke, is to me no wonder at all.

Verse 38 (bhagavata.10.70.38)

tavehitaṁ ko ’rhati sādhu vedituṁ sva-māyayedaṁ sṛjato niyacchataḥ yad vidyamānātmatayāvabhāsate tasmai namas te sva-vilakṣaṇātmane

Who indeed can rightly know Your intent, as You, by Your own maya, create and withdraw this world, which thereby appears as though truly existent? Obeisance to You, whose own nature is unlike any other.

Verse 39 (bhagavata.10.70.39)

jīvasya yaḥ saṁsarato vimokṣaṇaṁ na jānato ’nartha-vahāc charīrataḥ līlāvatāraiḥ sva-yaśaḥ pradīpakaṁ prājvālayat tvā tam ahaṁ prapadye

The living being, wandering through the cycle of birth and death, does not even know how to free himself from this body, the source of so much misfortune. But through Your playful incarnations You kindle the lamp of Your own fame. I take refuge in You alone.

Verse 40 (bhagavata.10.70.40)

athāpy āśrāvaye brahma nara-loka-viḍambanam rājñaḥ paitṛ-ṣvasreyasya bhaktasya ca cikīrṣitam

Even so, O Supreme Truth playing at being human, let me tell You what Your devotee King Yudhishthira, son of Your father's sister, intends to do.

Verse 41 (bhagavata.10.70.41)

yakṣyati tvāṁ makhendreṇa rājasūyena pāṇḍavaḥ pārameṣṭhya-kāmo nṛpatis tad bhavān anumodatām

Desiring supreme sovereignty, that Pandava king wishes to worship You with the greatest of sacrifices, the Rajasuya. Be pleased to give it Your blessing.

Verse 42 (bhagavata.10.70.42)

tasmin deva kratu-vare bhavantaṁ vai surādayaḥ didṛkṣavaḥ sameṣyanti rājānaś ca yaśasvinaḥ

O Lord, at that finest of sacrifices, the gods and other celebrated kings will all gather, eager for a sight of You.

Verse 43 (bhagavata.10.70.43)

śravaṇāt kīrtanād dhyānāt pūyante ’nte-vasāyinaḥ tava brahma-mayasyeśa kim utekṣābhimarśinaḥ

O Lord, even outcastes are purified merely by hearing, chanting and meditating upon You, who are the very embodiment of the Absolute; how much more, then, those who behold and touch You directly!

Verse 44 (bhagavata.10.70.44)

yasyāmalaṁ divi yaśaḥ prathitaṁ rasāyāṁ bhūmau ca te bhuvana-maṅgala dig-vitānam mandākinīti divi bhogavatīti cādho gaṅgeti ceha caraṇāmbu punāti viśvam

O source of blessing to all the worlds, Your spotless fame spreads like a canopy over every direction, in heaven, in the netherworld and on earth. The water of Your feet purifies the whole universe, known in heaven as the Mandakini, in the netherworld as the Bhogavati, and here on earth as the Ganga.

Verse 45 (bhagavata.10.70.45)

śrī-śuka uvāca tatra teṣv ātma-pakṣeṣv a- gṛṇatsu vijigīṣayā vācaḥ peśaiḥ smayan bhṛtyam uddhavaṁ prāha keśavaḥ

Śrī Śuka said: When there His own kinsmen, the Yadavas present, eager instead to conquer Jarasandha, spoke out against this proposal, Keshava, smiling, addressed His servant Uddhava in fine words.

Verse 46 (bhagavata.10.70.46)

śrī-bhagavān uvāca tvaṁ hi naḥ paramaṁ cakṣuḥ suhṛn mantrārtha-tattva-vit athātra brūhy anuṣṭheyaṁ śraddadhmaḥ karavāma tat

The Lord said: You alone are Our supreme eye, Our dear friend, and one who knows the true worth of counsel. So tell Us what ought to be done here; We shall trust your word and do accordingly.
