Skandha 10 · Chapter 74

The Deliverance of Shishupala at the Rajasuya Sacrifice

Chapter 73All chaptersChapter 75

Verse 1 (bhagavata.10.74.1)

śrī-śuka uvāca evaṁ yudhiṣṭhiro rājā jarāsandha-vadhaṁ vibhoḥ kṛṣṇasya cānubhāvaṁ taṁ śrutvā prītas tam abravīt

Shukadeva said: Having thus heard of the slaying of Jarasandha and of the mighty Krishna's wondrous power, King Yudhishthira, delighted, spoke to Him.

Verse 2 (bhagavata.10.74.2)

śrī-yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ye syus trai-lokya-guravaḥ sarve lokā maheśvarāḥ vahanti durlabhaṁ labdvā śirasaivānuśāsanam

Shri Yudhishthira said: All who are teachers of the three worlds, all the great lords of every realm, having received Your rarely-attained command, bear it upon their very heads.

Verse 3 (bhagavata.10.74.3)

sa bhavān aravindākṣo dīnānām īśa-māninām dhatte ’nuśāsanaṁ bhūmaṁs tad atyanta-viḍambanam

Yet You, the lotus-eyed Lord, in turn accept the commands of wretched men who fancy themselves masters — O all-pervading one, this is Your supreme play of self-concealment.

Verse 4 (bhagavata.10.74.4)

na hy ekasyādvitīyasya brahmaṇaḥ paramātmanaḥ karmabhir vardhate tejo hrasate ca yathā raveḥ

For the splendor of the one, non-dual Brahman, the Supreme Soul, neither waxes nor wanes through action — just as the sun's radiance is unaffected by its own movement.

Verse 5 (bhagavata.10.74.5)

na vai te ’jita bhaktānāṁ mamāham iti mādhava tvaṁ taveti ca nānā-dhīḥ paśūnām iva vaikṛtī

O unconquerable Madhava, in Your devotees there is none of that divisive sense of "I and mine," "you and yours" — the perverted mentality found in beasts.

Verse 6 (bhagavata.10.74.6)

śrī-śuka uvāca ity uktvā yajñiye kāle vavre yuktān sa ṛtvijaḥ kṛṣṇānumoditaḥ pārtho brāhmaṇān brahma-vādinaḥ

Shukadeva said: Having spoken thus, when the proper time for the sacrifice arrived, Partha, with Krishna's consent, chose suitable priests, brahmanas well versed in the Vedas.

Verse 7 (bhagavata.10.74.7)

dvaipāyano bharadvājaḥ sumantur gotamo ’sitaḥ vasiṣṭhaś cyavanaḥ kaṇvo maitreyaḥ kavaṣas tritaḥ

Dvaipayana, Bharadvaja, Sumantu, Gotama, Asita, Vasishtha, Chyavana, Kanva, Maitreya, Kavasha, Trita —

Verse 8 (bhagavata.10.74.8)

viśvāmitro vāmadevaḥ sumatir jaiminiḥ kratuḥ pailaḥ parāśaro gargo vaiśampāyana eva ca

Vishvamitra, Vamadeva, Sumati, Jaimini, Kratu, Paila, Parashara, Garga, and Vaishampayana as well —

Verse 9 (bhagavata.10.74.9)

atharvā kaśyapo dhaumyo rāmo bhārgava āsuriḥ vītihotro madhucchandā vīraseno ’kṛtavraṇaḥ

Atharva, Kashyapa, Dhaumya, Rama of the Bhrigus, Asuri, Vitihotra, Madhuchhanda, Virasena and Akritavrana — all these he appointed as priests.

Verse 10 (bhagavata.10.74.10)

upahūtās tathā cānye droṇa-bhīṣma-kṛpādayaḥ dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ saha-suto viduraś ca mahā-matiḥ

Others too were invited — Drona, Bhishma, Kripa and the rest, Dhritarashtra together with his sons, and the wise Vidura.

Verse 11 (bhagavata.10.74.11)

brāhmaṇāḥ kṣatriyā vaiśyāḥ śūdrā yajña-didṛkṣavaḥ tatreyuḥ sarva-rājāno rājñāṁ prakṛtayo nṛpa

O King, brahmanas, kshatriyas, vaishyas and shudras eager to witness the sacrifice, all the kings, and the subjects of every kingdom gathered there together.

Verse 12 (bhagavata.10.74.12)

tatas te deva-yajanaṁ brāhmaṇāḥ svarṇa-lāṅgalaiḥ kṛṣṭvā tatra yathāmnāyaṁ dīkṣayāṁ cakrire nṛpam

Then those brahmanas, having ploughed the sacrificial ground there with golden ploughshares according to tradition, duly initiated the King.

Verse 13 (bhagavata.10.74.13)

haimāḥ kilopakaraṇā varuṇasya yathā purā indrādayo loka-pālā viriñci-bhava-saṁyutāḥ

The sacrificial implements were of gold, just as in Varuna's ancient sacrifice; Indra and the other guardians of the world, together with Brahma and Shiva,

Verse 14 (bhagavata.10.74.14)

sa-gaṇāḥ siddha-gandharvā vidyādhara-mahoragāḥ munayo yakṣa-rakṣāṁsi khaga-kinnara-cāraṇāḥ

together with their attendants, and the Siddhas, Gandharvas, Vidyadharas, great serpents, sages, Yakshas, Rakshasas, celestial birds, Kinnaras and Charanas —

Verse 15 (bhagavata.10.74.15)

rājānaś ca samāhūtā rāja-patnyaś ca sarvaśaḥ rājasūyaṁ samīyuḥ sma rājñaḥ pāṇḍu-sutasya vai menire kṛṣṇa-bhaktasya sūpapannam avismitāḥ

— as well as the invited kings, and all their queens too, gathered for the Rajasuya sacrifice of the Pandava king; and without any surprise, they judged it altogether fitting for this devotee of Krishna.

Verse 16 (bhagavata.10.74.16)

ayājayan mahā-rājaṁ yājakā deva-varcasaḥ rājasūyena vidhi-vat pracetasam ivāmarāḥ

The priests, radiant with divine splendor, conducted the Rajasuya sacrifice for the great King exactly according to rule, just as the immortals once did for Varuna.

Verse 17 (bhagavata.10.74.17)

sūtye ’hany avanī-pālo yājakān sadasas-patīn apūjayan mahā-bhāgān yathā-vat su-samāhitaḥ

On the day of pressing the soma, the King, with the utmost attentiveness, duly honored the priests and the most exalted members of the assembly.

Verse 18 (bhagavata.10.74.18)

sadasyāgryārhaṇārhaṁ vai vimṛśantaḥ sabhā-sadaḥ nādhyagacchann anaikāntyāt sahadevas tadābravīt

Deliberating over who in the assembly deserved to be honored first, the members, their opinions divided, could reach no decision; then Sahadeva spoke.

Verse 19 (bhagavata.10.74.19)

arhati hy acyutaḥ śraiṣṭhyaṁ bhagavān sātvatāṁ patiḥ eṣa vai devatāḥ sarvā deśa-kāla-dhanādayaḥ

[Sahadeva said:] Achyuta, the Supreme Lord, master of the Satvatas, alone deserves the foremost honor; He alone truly is all the deities, and the place, the time, the wealth and all else besides.

Verse 20 (bhagavata.10.74.20)

yad-ātmakam idaṁ viśvaṁ kratavaś ca yad-ātmakāḥ agnir āhutayo mantrā sāṅkhyaṁ yogaś ca yat-paraḥ

This universe is of His very essence, and the sacrifices too are of His essence; the sacred fire, the oblations, the mantras, and that toward which both Sankhya and yoga are directed — all are He alone.

Verse 21 (bhagavata.10.74.21)

eka evādvitīyo ’sāv aitad-ātmyam idaṁ jagat ātmanātmāśrayaḥ sabhyāḥ sṛjaty avati hanty ajaḥ

He alone, without a second, is the very self of this universe; O assembly, that unborn Lord, resting upon nothing but Himself, creates, sustains and destroys all by His own energies.

Verse 22 (bhagavata.10.74.22)

vividhānīha karmāṇi janayan yad-avekṣayā īhate yad ayaṁ sarvaḥ śreyo dharmādi-lakṣaṇam

Bringing forth the countless activities of this world by His mere glance, it is because of Him that all people strive after that good marked by dharma and the other aims of life.

Verse 23 (bhagavata.10.74.23)

tasmāt kṛṣṇāya mahate dīyatāṁ paramārhaṇam evaṁ cet sarva-bhūtānām ātmanaś cārhaṇaṁ bhavet

Therefore let the highest honor be offered to the great Krishna; by doing so, all beings will be honored, and one's own self as well.

Verse 24 (bhagavata.10.74.24)

sarva-bhūtātma-bhūtāya kṛṣṇāyānanya-darśine deyaṁ śāntāya pūrṇāya dattasyānantyam icchatā

To Krishna, who has become the very self of all beings, who regards nothing as separate from Himself, who is ever peaceful and complete, honor should be offered by anyone who wishes the honor he gives to be returned without end.

Verse 25 (bhagavata.10.74.25)

ity uktvā sahadevo ’bhūt tūṣṇīṁ kṛṣṇānubhāva-vit tac chrutvā tuṣṭuvuḥ sarve sādhu sādhv iti sattamāḥ

Having said this, Sahadeva, who knew the true glory of Krishna, fell silent; and hearing it, all the most virtuous persons there exclaimed, "Well said! Well said!"

Verse 26 (bhagavata.10.74.26)

śrutvā dvijeritaṁ rājā jñātvā hārdaṁ sabhā-sadām samarhayad dhṛṣīkeśaṁ prītaḥ praṇaya-vihvalaḥ

Hearing what the brahmana had said and understanding the heartfelt sentiment of the assembly, the King, delighted and overwhelmed with love, duly worshiped Hrishikesha.

Verse 27 (bhagavata.10.74.27)

tat-pādāv avanijyāpaḥ śirasā loka-pāvanīḥ sa-bhāryaḥ sānujāmātyaḥ sa-kuṭumbo vahan mudā

Having washed His feet with water, and joyfully bearing that world-purifying water upon his own head and upon those of his wife, younger brothers, ministers and family —

Verse 28 (bhagavata.10.74.28)

vāsobhiḥ pīta-kauṣeyair bhūṣaṇaiś ca mahā-dhanaiḥ arhayitvāśru-pūrṇākṣo nāśakat samavekṣitum

— and having honored Him with garments of yellow silk and precious ornaments, the King, his eyes brimming with tears, could scarcely bring himself to gaze upon Him.

Verse 29 (bhagavata.10.74.29)

itthaṁ sabhājitaṁ vīkṣya sarve prāñjalayo janāḥ namo jayeti nemus taṁ nipetuḥ puṣpa-vṛṣṭayaḥ

Seeing Him thus honored, all the people there, hands joined in reverence, bowed to Him crying "Obeisance! Victory!" — and showers of flowers rained down.

Verse 30 (bhagavata.10.74.30)

itthaṁ niśamya damaghoṣa-sutaḥ sva-pīṭhād utthāya kṛṣṇa-guṇa-varṇana-jāta-manyuḥ utkṣipya bāhum idam āha sadasy amarṣī saṁśrāvayan bhagavate paruṣāṇy abhītaḥ

Hearing this, the son of Damaghosha rose from his seat, seething with fury at the glorification of Krishna's qualities; raising his arm, that intolerant man, unafraid, spoke aloud before the whole assembly these harsh words directed at the Lord.

Verse 31 (bhagavata.10.74.31)

īśo duratyayaḥ kāla iti satyavatī srutiḥ vṛddhānām api yad buddhir bāla-vākyair vibhidyate

[Shishupala said:] "This Vedic saying, that Time the controller cannot be overcome, has indeed proven true — for even the wisdom of elders is now swayed by the words of a mere child.

Verse 32 (bhagavata.10.74.32)

yūyaṁ pātra-vidāṁ śreṣṭhā mā mandhvaṁ bāla-bhāṣītam sadasas-patayaḥ sarve kṛṣṇo yat sammato ’rhaṇe

"You are the wisest judges of who is worthy of honor — do not heed this childish talk, O leaders of this assembly, that Krishna should be deemed fit for worship.

Verse 33 (bhagavata.10.74.33)

tapo-vidyā-vrata-dharān jñāna-vidhvasta-kalmaṣān paramaṛṣīn brahma-niṣṭhāḻ loka-pālaiś ca pūjitān

"Passing over these supreme sages, bearers of austerity, learning and vows, whose sins have been destroyed by knowledge, steadfast in the Absolute, and honored even by the guardians of the worlds —

Verse 34 (bhagavata.10.74.34)

sadas-patīn atikramya gopālaḥ kula-pāṁsanaḥ yathā kākaḥ puroḍāśaṁ saparyāṁ katham arhati

"— and disregarding the presiding elders of this very assembly, how can this cowherd, a disgrace to his family, be worthy of worship, any more than a crow is worthy of the sacrificial cake?

Verse 35 (bhagavata.10.74.35)

varṇāśrama-kulāpetaḥ sarva-dharma-bahiṣ-kṛtaḥ svaira-vartī guṇair hīnaḥ saparyāṁ katham arhati

"Devoid of caste, order of life and family standing, excluded from every religious duty, a law unto himself, and lacking all virtue — how can such a one deserve worship?

Verse 36 (bhagavata.10.74.36)

yayātinaiṣāṁ hi kulaṁ śaptaṁ sadbhir bahiṣ-kṛtam vṛthā-pāna-rataṁ śaśvat saparyāṁ katham arhati

"Their dynasty was cursed by Yayati and cast out by the righteous, ever given over to idle drinking — how can such a one deserve worship?

Verse 37 (bhagavata.10.74.37)

brahmarṣi-sevitān deśān hitvaite ’brahma-varcasam samudraṁ durgam āśritya bādhante dasyavaḥ prajāḥ

"Abandoning the lands frequented by great sages, devoid of brahminical splendor, these people, taking shelter in an impregnable fortress amid the sea, harass their subjects just like common thieves.

Verse 38 (bhagavata.10.74.38)

evam-ādīny abhadrāṇi babhāṣe naṣṭa-maṅgalaḥ novāca kiñcid bhagavān yathā siṁhaḥ śivā-rutam

[Shukadeva continued:] Thus, that ill-fated man spoke these and other such abusive words; but the Supreme Lord said nothing at all, just as a lion pays no heed to the howl of a jackal.

Verse 39 (bhagavata.10.74.39)

bhagavan-nindanaṁ śrutvā duḥsahaṁ tat sabhā-sadaḥ karṇau pidhāya nirjagmuḥ śapantaś cedi-paṁ ruṣā

Hearing that unbearable blasphemy against the Lord, the members of the assembly covered their ears and walked out, cursing the king of Chedi in their anger.

Verse 40 (bhagavata.10.74.40)

nindāṁ bhagavataḥ śṛṇvaṁs tat-parasya janasya vā tato nāpaiti yaḥ so ’pi yāty adhaḥ sukṛtāc cyutaḥ

One who, upon hearing blasphemy of the Lord or of His devoted servant, fails to leave that place, likewise falls, stripped of his own accumulated merit.

Verse 41 (bhagavata.10.74.41)

tataḥ pāṇḍu-sutāḥ kruddhā matsya-kaikaya-sṛñjayāḥ udāyudhāḥ samuttasthuḥ śiśupāla-jighāṁsavaḥ

Then the sons of Pandu, enraged, together with the Matsyas, Kaikayas and Srinjayas, sprang up with weapons drawn, determined to slay Shishupala.

Verse 42 (bhagavata.10.74.42)

tataś caidyas tv asambhrānto jagṛhe khaḍga-carmaṇī bhartsayan kṛṣṇa-pakṣīyān rājñaḥ sadasi bhārata

Then the king of Chedi, undaunted, seized his sword and shield, and, O descendant of Bharata, in the very midst of the assembled kings began hurling abuse at those on Krishna's side.

Verse 43 (bhagavata.10.74.43)

tāvad utthāya bhagavān svān nivārya svayaṁ ruṣā śiraḥ kṣurānta-cakreṇa jahāra patato ripoḥ

At that instant the Lord rose, Himself restraining His own followers, and, in His wrath, hurled His razor-edged discus, severing the head of the enemy as he charged forward.

Verse 44 (bhagavata.10.74.44)

śabdaḥ kolāhalo ’thāsīc chiśupāle hate mahān tasyānuyāyino bhūpā dudruvur jīvitaiṣiṇaḥ

A great uproar arose when Shishupala was slain; his followers among the kings, seeking only to save their lives, fled in all directions.

Verse 45 (bhagavata.10.74.45)

caidya-dehotthitaṁ jyotir vāsudevam upāviśat paśyatāṁ sarva-bhūtānām ulkeva bhuvi khāc cyutā

A radiant light, rising from Shishupala's body, entered into Vasudeva as all beings looked on, like a meteor falling from the sky to merge with the earth.

Verse 46 (bhagavata.10.74.46)

janma-trayānuguṇita- vaira-saṁrabdhayā dhiyā dhyāyaṁs tan-mayatāṁ yāto bhāvo hi bhava-kāraṇam

Through a mind consumed by enmity nurtured across three successive births, he attained through that very meditation absorption into the Lord — for one's inner disposition is indeed the cause of one's next birth.

Verse 47 (bhagavata.10.74.47)

ṛtvigbhyaḥ sa-sadasyebhyo dakṣināṁ vipulām adāt sarvān sampūjya vidhi-vac cakre ’vabhṛtham eka-rāṭ

The sole emperor Yudhishthira gave lavish gifts to the priests and to the members of the assembly, and, having duly honored them all, performed the concluding avabhritha bath.

Verse 48 (bhagavata.10.74.48)

sādhayitvā kratuḥ rājñaḥ kṛṣṇo yogeśvareśvaraḥ uvāsa katicin māsān suhṛdbhir abhiyācitaḥ

Krishna, the Lord even of the masters of yoga, having brought the King's sacrifice to a successful close, remained there for some months at the earnest entreaty of his well-wishing friends.

Verse 49 (bhagavata.10.74.49)

tato ’nujñāpya rājānam anicchantam apīśvaraḥ yayau sa-bhāryaḥ sāmātyaḥ sva-puraṁ devakī-sutaḥ

Then, having taken leave of the King — though he was reluctant to let Him go — the almighty Lord, son of Devaki, departed for His own city together with His queens and ministers.

Verse 50 (bhagavata.10.74.50)

varṇitaṁ tad upākhyānaṁ mayā te bahu-vistaram vaikuṇṭha-vāsinor janma vipra-śāpāt punaḥ punaḥ

I have already related to you at great length that account of the two residents of Vaikuntha who, on account of a brahmana's curse, were born again and again.

Verse 51 (bhagavata.10.74.51)

rājasūyāvabhṛthyena snāto rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ brahma-kṣatra-sabhā-madhye śuśubhe sura-rāḍ iva

King Yudhishthira, purified by the avabhritha bath of the Rajasuya sacrifice, shone resplendent amid that assembly of brahmanas and kshatriyas, like the king of the gods himself.

Verse 52 (bhagavata.10.74.52)

rājñā sabhājitāḥ sarve sura-mānava-khecarāḥ kṛṣṇaṁ kratuṁ ca śaṁsantaḥ sva-dhāmāni yayur mudā

All the gods, men and celestial beings, duly honored by the King, set off joyfully for their own abodes, singing the praises of Krishna and of the sacrifice.

Verse 53 (bhagavata.10.74.53)

duryodhanam ṛte pāpaṁ kaliṁ kuru-kulāmayam yo na sehe śrīyaṁ sphītāṁ dṛṣṭvā pāṇḍu-sutasya tām

All, that is, except sinful Duryodhana, the disease of the Kuru line, the very embodiment of Kali, who could not bear to witness the flourishing prosperity of the son of Pandu.

Verse 54 (bhagavata.10.74.54)

ya idaṁ kīrtayed viṣṇoḥ karma caidya-vadhādikam rāja-mokṣaṁ vitānaṁ ca sarva-pāpaiḥ pramucyate

Whoever recites this deed of Vishnu — the slaying of the king of Chedi and all that followed, the liberation of the kings, and this great sacrifice — is freed from all sins.
