When the priests, the assembly members, the most learned ones and the King's dearest friends had all been well satisfied with gracious words and honoring gifts, and when the king of Chedi had merged into the feet of the Lord of the Satvatas, they then performed the avabhritha bath in the celestial river.

Verse 11 (bhagavata.10.75.11)

The Yadus, Srinjayas, Kambojas, Kurus, Kekayas and Koshalas, making the earth tremble beneath their armies, marched ahead of the sacrifice's performer.

The assembly members, priests and the foremost among the twice-born chanted Vedic hymns in abundance, while the gods, divine sages, ancestors and Gandharvas praised him, showering down flowers.

Verse 14 (bhagavata.10.75.14)

Men and women, elegantly adorned with fragrances, garlands, jewelry and fine garments, sported together, smearing and sprinkling one another with various fragrant essences.

Verse 15 (bhagavata.10.75.15)

Smeared by the men with oil, curds, perfumed water, turmeric and thick kumkum, the courtesans, smearing them in turn, joined playfully in the sport.

Verse 16 (bhagavata.10.75.16)

Guarded by their attendants, the queens came out to watch, like the wives of the gods appearing in the sky in their splendid celestial cars; sprinkled by their husbands' cousins and friends, their faces blossoming with bashful smiles, they shone in radiant beauty.

Verse 17 (bhagavata.10.75.17)

They too sprinkled their brothers-in-law and friends with water from their bags; their soaked garments clung, revealing their limbs, breasts, thighs and waists, and garlands slipped from hair loosened in their excitement — by these charming sports they stirred the hearts of those whose minds were impure.

Verse 18 (bhagavata.10.75.18)

The emperor, riding his chariot drawn by fine gold-garlanded horses, shone forth with his queens, resplendent as the king of sacrifices himself amid its own rites.

Verse 19 (bhagavata.10.75.19)

patnī-samyājāvabhṛthyaiś caritvā te tam ṛtvijaḥ ācāntaṁ snāpayāṁ cakrur gaṅgāyāṁ saha kṛṣṇayā

Having performed for him the patni-samyaja and avabhrithya rites, the priests then, after he had duly sipped water, had him bathe in the Ganga together with Krishna [Draupadi].

Verse 20 (bhagavata.10.75.20)

deva-dundubhayo nedur nara-dundubhibhiḥ samam mumucuḥ puṣpa-varṣāṇi devarṣi-pitṛ-mānavāḥ

The kettledrums of the gods resounded together with the drums of men; gods, sages, ancestors and men all rained down showers of flowers.

Verse 21 (bhagavata.10.75.21)

sasnus tatra tataḥ sarve varṇāśrama-yutā narāḥ mahā-pātaky api yataḥ sadyo mucyeta kilbiṣāt

There all the people, of every varna and ashrama, then bathed — for even the greatest sinner is instantly freed there from all sin.

Verse 22 (bhagavata.10.75.22)

atha rājāhate kṣaume paridhāya sv-alaṅkṛtaḥ ṛtvik-sadasya-viprādīn ānarcābharaṇāmbaraiḥ

Then the King, having put on fresh silken garments and adorned himself, honored the priests, the assembly members, the brahmanas and all the rest with ornaments and garments.

Verse 23 (bhagavata.10.75.23)

bandhūñ jñātīn nṛpān mitra- suhṛdo ’nyāṁś ca sarvaśaḥ abhīkṣnaṁ pūjayām āsa nārāyaṇa-paro nṛpaḥ

The King, wholly devoted to Narayana, repeatedly and generously honored his relatives, kinsmen, fellow kings, friends, well-wishers, and everyone else present.

Verse 24 (bhagavata.10.75.24)

sarve janāḥ sura-ruco maṇi-kuṇḍala-srag- uṣṇīṣa-kañcuka-dukūla-mahārghya-hārāḥ nāryaś ca kuṇḍala-yugālaka-vṛnda-juṣṭa- vaktra-śriyaḥ kanaka-mekhalayā virejuḥ

All the people there shone as radiant as gods, adorned with jeweled earrings, garlands, turbans, tunics, fine silks and costly necklaces; and the women, their lovely faces graced by matching earrings and clusters of curls, shone resplendent in golden girdles.

Verse 25 (bhagavata.10.75.25)

athartvijo mahā-śīlāḥ sadasyā brahma-vādinaḥ brahma-kṣatriya-viṭ-śudrā- rājāno ye samāgatāḥ

Then the priests of noble character, the assembly members versed in the Vedas, the brahmanas, kshatriyas, vaishyas and shudras, and the kings who had assembled there —

Verse 26 (bhagavata.10.75.26)

devarṣi-pitṛ-bhūtāni loka-pālāḥ sahānugāḥ pūjitās tam anujñāpya sva-dhāmāni yayur nṛpa

— the gods, sages, ancestors and spirit beings, and the guardians of the worlds with their attendants — all of them, duly honored, took his leave and departed, O King, each to his own abode.

Verse 27 (bhagavata.10.75.27)

hari-dāsasya rājarṣe rājasūya-mahodayam naivātṛpyan praśaṁsantaḥ piban martyo ’mṛtaṁ yathā

O royal sage, though they went on praising the great festival of that servant of Hari's Rajasuya sacrifice, they were never satisfied — just as a mortal is never sated even while drinking nectar.

Verse 28 (bhagavata.10.75.28)

tato yudhiṣṭhiro rājā suhṛt-sambandhi-bāndhavān premṇā nivārayām āsa kṛṣṇaṁ ca tyāga-kātaraḥ

Then King Yudhishthira, out of love, dreading their departure, held back his well-wishers, relatives and kinsmen, and Krishna as well.

Verse 29 (bhagavata.10.75.29)

bhagavān api tatrāṅga nyāvātsīt tat-priyaṁ-karaḥ prasthāpya yadu-vīrāṁś ca sāmbādīṁś ca kuśasthalīm

The Lord too, my dear one, wishing to please him, first sent Samba and the other Yadu heroes back to Kushasthali, and remained there Himself for some time.

Verse 30 (bhagavata.10.75.30)

itthaṁ rājā dharma-suto manoratha-mahārṇavam su-dustaraṁ samuttīrya kṛṣṇenāsīd gata-jvaraḥ

Thus King Yudhishthira, son of Dharma, having crossed by Krishna's grace the vast and formidable ocean of his own desires, became free at last from his burning distress.

Verse 31 (bhagavata.10.75.31)

ekadāntaḥ-pure tasya vīkṣya duryodhanaḥ śriyam atapyad rājasūyasya mahitvaṁ cācyutātmanaḥ

One day, beholding the splendor of that inner palace, Duryodhana was consumed with envy at the grandeur of the Rajasuya and of that King whose very self was steeped in Achyuta.

Verse 32 (bhagavata.10.75.32)

yasmiṁs narendra-ditijendra-surendra-lakṣmīr nānā vibhānti kila viśva-sṛjopakḷptāḥ tābhiḥ patīn drupada-rāja-sutopatasthe yasyāṁ viṣakta-hṛdayaḥ kuru-rāḍ atapyat

In that assembly hall the manifold splendors of the lords of men, demons and gods shone forth, all arranged there by the world's own architect; with these Draupadi, daughter of the King of Drupada, served her husbands, and the King of the Kurus, his heart caught by her, was consumed with torment.

Verse 33 (bhagavata.10.75.33)

yasmin tadā madhu-pater mahiṣī-sahasraṁ śroṇī-bhareṇa śanakaiḥ kvaṇad-aṅghri-śobham madhye su-cāru kuca-kuṅkuma-śoṇa-hāraṁ śrīman-mukhaṁ pracala-kuṇḍala-kuntalāḍhyam

There too were the thousand queens of the Lord of Madhu, their anklets tinkling gently under the weight of their hips, their lovely faces adorned amid necklaces reddened by the kumkum of their breasts, and rich with swaying earrings and flowing tresses.

Verse 34 (bhagavata.10.75.34)

sabhāyāṁ maya-kḷptāyāṁ kvāpi dharma-suto ’dhirāṭ vṛto ’nugair bandhubhiś ca kṛṣṇenāpi sva-cakṣuṣā

In that assembly hall built by Maya, the emperor, son of Dharma, sat at a certain spot, surrounded by his attendants and kinsmen, with Krishna too watching over him.

Verse 35 (bhagavata.10.75.35)

āsīnaḥ kāñcane sākṣād āsane maghavān iva pārameṣṭhya-śrīyā juṣṭaḥ stūyamānaś ca vandibhiḥ

Seated upon a golden throne, resplendent as Indra himself, and endowed with the majesty of the supreme seat, he was being praised there by the court bards.

Verse 36 (bhagavata.10.75.36)

tatra duryodhano mānī parīto bhrātṛbhir nṛpa kirīṭa-mālī nyaviśad asi-hastaḥ kṣipan ruṣā

There, O King, the proud Duryodhana, surrounded by his brothers, crowned and garlanded, sword in hand, strode in angrily, hurling abuse as he went.

Verse 37 (bhagavata.10.75.37)

sthale ’bhyagṛhṇād vastrāntaṁ jalaṁ matvā sthale ’patat jale ca sthala-vad bhrāntyā maya-māyā-vimohitaḥ

On solid ground he lifted the hem of his garment, taking it for water; and elsewhere, bewildered by the illusion of Maya's craft, he mistook water for solid ground and fell in.

Verse 38 (bhagavata.10.75.38)

jahāsa bhīmas taṁ dṛṣṭvā striyo nṛpatayo pare nivāryamāṇā apy aṅga rājñā kṛṣṇānumoditāḥ

Seeing this, Bhima laughed aloud, and so did the women and the other kings present — though the King tried to restrain them, they were, my dear one, secretly encouraged by Krishna.

Verse 39 (bhagavata.10.75.39)

sa vrīḍito ’vag-vadano ruṣā jvalan niṣkramya tūṣṇīṁ prayayau gajāhvayam hā-heti śabdaḥ su-mahān abhūt satām ajāta-śatrur vimanā ivābhavat babhūva tūṣṇīṁ bhagavān bhuvo bharaṁ samujjihīrṣur bhramati sma yad-dṛśā

Ashamed, his face lowered, burning with rage, he left in silence and went back to Hastinapura. A great cry of "Alas! Alas!" rose up among the virtuous, and Ajatashatru himself grew troubled at heart. But the Lord, by whose mere glance the burden of the earth was already being lifted, remained silent throughout.

Verse 40 (bhagavata.10.75.40)

etat te ’bhihitaṁ rājan yat pṛṣṭo ’ham iha tvayā suyodhanasya daurātmyaṁ rājasūye mahā-kratau

This, O King, is what you asked of me — I have now told you of Suyodhana's malice at that great Rajasuya sacrifice.
