The Birth of Budha
Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.1.11.1)
ṛṣaya ūcuḥ ko'sau purūravā rājā korvaśī devakanyakā kathaṁ kaṣṭaṁ ca samprāptaṁ tena rājñā mahātmanā
The sages said: Who was that King Pururavas, and who was Urvashi, the daughter of the gods? And what hardship did that great-souled king come to endure?
Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.1.11.2)
sarvaṁ kathānakaṁ brūhi lomaharṣaṇajādhunā śrotukāmā vayaṁ sarve tvanmukhābjacyutaṁ rasam
Tell us the whole story now, O son of Lomaharshana; we are all eager to hear the nectar flowing from your lotus mouth.
Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.1.11.3)
Your speech, O Suta, full of flavor, is sweeter even than nectar; we are never satiated by it, just as the immortals are never satiated by ambrosia.
Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.1.11.4)
sūta uvāca śṛṇudhvaṁ munayaḥ sarve kathāṁ divyāṁ manoramām vakṣyāmyahaṁ yathābud|hdhyā śrutāṁ vyāsavarottamāt
Suta said: Listen, all you sages, to this divine and enchanting tale; I shall tell it as best I understand it, as heard from Vyasa, most excellent of sages.
Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.1.11.5)
gurostu dayitā bhāryā tārā nāmeti viśrutā rūpayauvanayuktā sā cārvaṅgī madavihvalā
The beloved wife of the guru, renowned by the name Tara, endowed with beauty and youth, of lovely limbs, was intoxicated with the pride of her charms.
Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.1.11.6)

Once, that beautiful woman went to the abode of the Moon, her husband being the officiating priest there; and she, endowed with beauty and youth, was seen there by the Moon, exceedingly.
Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.1.11.7)

The Moon then became afflicted with desire toward that moon-faced woman; she too, seeing the Moon, became tormented by the pain of love.
Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.1.11.8)
tāvanyonyaṁ premayuktau smarārtau ca babhūvatuḥ tārā śaśī madonmattau kāmabāṇaprapīḍitau
The two of them, filled with mutual love, tormented by desire, became — Tara and the Moon, maddened with passion, sorely afflicted by the arrows of Kama.
Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.1.11.9)

remāte madamattau tau parasparaspṛhānvitau dināni katicittatra jātāni ramamāṇayoḥ
Those two, intoxicated with passion, longing for each other, took their pleasure; some days passed there as they enjoyed themselves.
Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.1.11.10)
bṛhaspatistu duḥkhārtastārāmānayituṁ gṛham preṣayāmāsa śiṣyaṁ tu nāyātā sā vaśīkṛtā
Brihaspati, afflicted with sorrow, sent his disciple to bring Tara home; but she, having come under the Moon's sway, did not return.

punaḥ punaryadā śiṣyaṁ parāvartata candramāḥ bṛhaspatistadā kruddho jagāma svayameva hi

Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.1.11.12)
gatvā somagṛhaṁ tatra vācaspatirudāradhīḥ uvāca śaśinaṁ kruddhaḥ smayamānaṁ madānvitam
Having gone to the Moon's abode, Vachaspati, of noble intellect, angrily addressed the Moon, who stood there smiling, filled with pride:
Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.1.11.13)
kiṁ kṛtaṁ kila śītāṁśo karma dharmavigarhitam rakṣitā mama bhāryeyaṁ sundarī kena hetunā

Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.1.11.14)

'You are guilty of a great sin, of vile conduct, utterly condemnable; you are not worthy of a place among the gods, if this woman has been enjoyed.'
Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.1.11.17)

To him thus speaking, the lord of Rohini replied — to the guru, filled with rage and grieving over the separation from his beloved:
Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.1.11.19)
induruvāca krodhātte tu durārādhyā brāhmaṇāḥ krodhavarjitāḥ pūjārhā dharmaśāstrajñā varjanīyāstato'nyathā
The Moon said: 'Because of your anger you have become hard to appease; true brahmins are free of anger. Those knowing dharma-shastra are worthy of worship — otherwise they are to be avoided.'

āgamiṣyati sā kāmaṁ gṛhaṁ te varavarṇinī atraiva saṁsthitā bālā kā te hānirihānagha
'That fair-complexioned woman will come to your home in due course, of her own will; this young woman is staying right here for now — what loss is it to you in this, O sinless one?'

'You yourself have declared before, in accordance with the dharma-shastras, that a woman is not defiled by mere conduct of this kind, just as a brahmin is not defiled by Vedic ritual action.'

Verse 55 (devibhagavatam.1.11.55)
indurāvāca dharmajño'si mahābāho devānāmadhipaḥ svayam purodhāpi ca te tādṛgyuvayoḥ sadṛśī matiḥ
The Moon said: You are a knower of dharma, O mighty-armed one, yourself the lord of the gods; and your priest too is of a like mind — your two minds are alike.
Verse 56 (devibhagavatam.1.11.56)
paropadeśe kuśalā bhavanti bahavo janāḥ durlabhastu svayaṁ kartā prāpte karmaṇi sarvadā
Many people are skilled in giving advice to others; but one who himself acts, when the deed is actually at hand, is always hard to find.
Verse 57 (devibhagavatam.1.11.57)
bārhaspatyapraṇītaṁ ca śāstraṁ gṛhṇanti mānavāḥ ko virodho'tra deveśa kāmayānāṁ bhajanstriyam
Men accept the very shastra composed by Brihaspati himself; what contradiction is there here, O lord of gods, in one who desires and enjoys a woman?
Verse 58 (devibhagavatam.1.11.58)
svakīyaṁ balināṁ sarvaṁ durbalānāṁ na kiñcana svīyā ca parakīyā ca bhramo'yaṁ mandacetasām
Everything belongs to the strong; nothing belongs to the weak; the distinction between 'one's own' and 'another's' is a delusion of the dull-witted.
Verse 59 (devibhagavatam.1.11.59)
tārā mayyanuraktā ca yathā na tu tathā gurau anuraktā kathaṁ tyājyā dharmato nyāyatastathā
Tara is devoted to me, as she is not to the guru; how, then, should one so devoted to me be abandoned, either by dharma or by justice?
Verse 60 (devibhagavatam.1.11.60)
gṛhārambhastu raktāyāṁ viraktāyāṁ kathaṁ bhavet virakteyaṁ yadā jātā cakame'nujakāminīm
How can a household be founded upon one who is unattached? When she has become thus estranged, he himself once desired his own younger brother's beloved.
Verse 61 (devibhagavatam.1.11.61)
na dāsye'haṁ varārohāṁ gaccha dūta vada svayam īśvaro'si sahasrākṣa yadicchasi kuruṣva tat
'I shall not give up this fair woman; go, messenger, and tell him yourself. You are the mighty lord, O thousand-eyed one; do as you wish.'
Verse 62 (devibhagavatam.1.11.62)
sūta uvāca ityuktaḥ śaśinā dūtaḥ prayayau śakrasannidhim indrāyācaṣṭa tatsarvaṁ yaduktaṁ śītaraśminā
Suta said: Thus addressed by the Moon, the messenger went to Indra's presence, and reported to Indra everything that the cool-rayed one had said.
Verse 63 (devibhagavatam.1.11.63)
turāṣāḍapi tacchrutvā krodhayukto babhūva ha senodyogaṁ tathā cakre sāhāyyārthaṁ gurorvibhuḥ
Turashad too, hearing this, became filled with anger; the mighty one made ready his army, for the sake of helping his guru.
Verse 64 (devibhagavatam.1.11.64)
śukrastu vigrahaṁ śrutvā gurudveṣāttato yayau mā dadasveti taṁ vākyamuvāca śaśinaṁ prati
Shukra, hearing of the conflict, went there out of enmity toward the guru, and spoke these words to the Moon: 'Do not give her up.'
Verse 65 (devibhagavatam.1.11.65)
sāhāyyaṁ te kariṣyāmi mantraśaktyā mahāmate bhavitā yadi saṅgrāmastava cendreṇa māriṣa
'I shall render you help through the power of my mantras, O great-minded one, if there is to be battle between you and Indra, O worthy one.'
Verse 66 (devibhagavatam.1.11.66)
śaṅkarastu tadākarṇya gurudārābhimarśanam guruśatruṁ bhṛguṁ matvā sāhāyyamakarottadā
Shankara, hearing of this violation of the guru's wife, and regarding Bhrigu as an enemy of the guru, then rendered his help to Brihaspati's side.
Verse 67 (devibhagavatam.1.11.67)
saṅgrāmastu tadā vṛtto devadānavayordrutam bahūni tatra varṣāṇi tārakāsuravatkila
A battle then swiftly broke out between the gods and the danavas; for many years it raged there, indeed, like the Taraka war.
Verse 68 (devibhagavatam.1.11.68)
devāsurakṛtaṁ yuddhaṁ dṛṣṭvā tatra pitāmahaḥ haṁsārūḍho jagāmāśu taṁ deśaṁ kleśaśāntaye
Seeing the war waged between the gods and the demons there, the Grandsire, mounted on his swan, went swiftly to that place, for the sake of quelling the strife.
Verse 69 (devibhagavatam.1.11.69)
rākāpatiṁ tadā prāha muñca bhāryāṁ guroriti nocedviṣṇuṁ samāhūya kariṣyāmi tu saṅkṣayam
He then said to the lord of the full moon: 'Release the guru's wife; otherwise, summoning Vishnu, I shall bring about total destruction.'
Verse 70 (devibhagavatam.1.11.70)
bhṛguṁ nivārayāmāsa brahmā lokapitāmahaḥ kimanyāyamatirjātā saṅgadoṣānmahāmate
Brahma, the grandfather of the worlds, restrained Bhrigu as well: 'Why has your mind turned to injustice, through the fault of bad association, O great-minded one?'
Verse 71 (devibhagavatam.1.11.71)
niṣedhayāmāsa tato bhṛgustaṁ cauṣadhīpatim muñca bhāryāṁ guroradya pitrāhaṁ preṣitastava
Bhrigu then restrained himself, and together with Brahma forbade the lord of herbs further conflict: 'Release the guru's wife today; I have been sent to you by the Father.'
Verse 72 (devibhagavatam.1.11.72)
sūta uvāca dvijarājastu tacchrutvā bhṛgorvacanamadbhutam dadau ca tatpriyāṁ bhāryāṁ gurorgarbhavatīṁ śubhām
Suta said: The king of the twice-born, hearing Bhrigu's wondrous words, gave back to the guru his beloved and auspicious wife, who was by then pregnant.
Verse 73 (devibhagavatam.1.11.73)
prāpya kāntāṁ gururhṛṣṭaḥ svagṛhaṁ mudito yayau tato devāstato daityā yayuḥ svānsvāngṛhānprati
Having regained his beloved, the guru, delighted, went joyfully to his own home; then the gods, and then the daityas, went each to their own respective homes.
Verse 74 (devibhagavatam.1.11.74)
brahmā svasadanaṁ prāptaḥ kailāsaṁ cāpi śaṅkaraḥ bṛhaspatistu santuṣṭaḥ prāpya bhāryāṁ manoramām
Brahma reached his own abode, and Shankara too reached Kailasa; Brihaspati, well pleased, having regained his charming wife,
Verse 75 (devibhagavatam.1.11.75)
tataḥ kālena kiyatā tārāsūta sutaṁ śubham sudine śubhanakṣatre tārāpatisamaṁ guṇaiḥ
— then, after some time, Tara gave birth to an auspicious son, on a good day, under an auspicious constellation, a son equal in qualities to the lord of the stars.
Verse 76 (devibhagavatam.1.11.76)
dṛṣṭvā putraṁ gururjātaṁ cakāra vidhipūrvakam jātakarmādikaṁ sarvaṁ prahṛṣṭenāntarātmanā
Seeing the son born, the guru, his inner soul filled with joy, duly performed the birth-rites and all the rest, according to proper rule.
Verse 77 (devibhagavatam.1.11.77)
śrutaṁ candramasā janma putrasya munisattamāḥ dūtaṁ ca preṣayāmāsa guruṁ prati mahāmatiḥ
O best of sages, the Moon heard of the birth of the son, and, great-minded, sent a messenger to the guru:
Verse 78 (devibhagavatam.1.11.78)
na cāyaṁ tava putro'sti mama vīryasamudbhavaḥ kathaṁ tvaṁ kṛtavānkāmaṁ jātakarmādikaṁ vidhim
'This is not truly your son — he arose from my own seed. How, then, have you performed at your pleasure the birth-rites and the rest of the ritual?'
Verse 79 (devibhagavatam.1.11.79)
tacchrutvā vacanaṁ tasya dūtasya ca bṛhaspatiḥ uvāca mama putro me sadṛśo nātra saṁśayaḥ
Hearing these words of the messenger, Brihaspati said: 'He is my son, resembling me — there is no doubt of this.'
Verse 80 (devibhagavatam.1.11.80)
punarvivādaḥ sañjāto militā devadānavāḥ yuddhārthamāgatāsteṣāṁ samājaḥ samajāyata
Once again a dispute arose; the gods and danavas gathered together, and their assembly, come there for the sake of war, formed again.
Verse 81 (devibhagavatam.1.11.81)
tatrāgataḥ svayaṁ brahmā śāntikāmaḥ prajāpatiḥ nivārayāmāsa mukhe saṁsthitānyuddhadurmadān
There Brahma, Prajapati, desiring peace, came himself, and restrained, face to face, those maddened for war.
Verse 82 (devibhagavatam.1.11.82)
tārāṁ papraccha dharmātmā kasyāyaṁ tanayaḥ śubhe satyaṁ vada varārohe yathā kleśaḥ praśāmyati
The righteous-souled Brahma asked Tara: 'Whose son is this, O auspicious one? Speak the truth, O fair one, so that this strife may be calmed.'
Verse 83 (devibhagavatam.1.11.83)
tamuvācāsitāpāṅgī lajjamānāpyadhomukhī candrasyeti śanairantarjagāma varavarṇinī
That dark-eyed, fair-complexioned woman, though ashamed, her face bowed down, said to him softly, 'He is the Moon's,' and then withdrew within.
Verse 84 (devibhagavatam.1.11.84)
jagrāha taṁ sutaṁ somaḥ prahṛṣṭenāntarātmanā nāma cakre budha iti jagāma svagṛhaṁ punaḥ
Soma took that son, his inner soul filled with joy, and gave him the name 'Budha'; and he then went again to his own home.
Verse 85 (devibhagavatam.1.11.85)
yayau brahmā svakaṁ dhāma sarve devāḥ savāsavāḥ yathāgataṁ gataṁ sarvaiḥ sarvaśaḥ prekṣakairjanaiḥ
Brahma went to his own abode, and all the gods, together with Vasava; all the onlookers, in every way, went back as they had come.
Verse 86 (devibhagavatam.1.11.86)
kathiteyaṁ budhotpattirgurukṣetre ca somataḥ yathā śrutā mayā pūrvaṁ vyāsātsatyavatīsutāt
Thus has this birth of Budha, in the field of the guru yet from Soma, been told, just as I heard it before from Vyasa, the son of Satyavati.
