Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.1.12.1)
sūta uvāca tataḥ purūravā jajñe ilāyāṁ kathayāmi vaḥ budhaputro'tidharmātmā yajñakṛddānatatparaḥ
Suta said: Then Pururavas was born to Ila — I shall tell you of him — the son of Budha, most righteous-souled, a performer of sacrifices, devoted to giving.
Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.1.12.2)
sudyumno nāma bhūpālaḥ satyavādī jitendriyaḥ saindhavaṁ hayamāruhya cacāra mṛgayāṁ vane
There was a king named Sudyumna, truthful in speech, of controlled senses; mounting a Sindhu horse, he went hunting in the forest.
Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.1.12.3)
yutaḥ katipayāmātyairdarśitaścārukuṇḍalaḥ dhanurājagavaṁ baddhvā bāṇasaṅghaṁ tathādbhutam
Accompanied by a few ministers, resplendent, with beautiful earrings, having strung his bow made of ox-horn, and with a wondrous quiver of arrows,
Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.1.12.4)
sa bhramaṁstadvanoddeśe hanyamāno rurūnmṛgān śaśāṁśca sūkarāṁścaiva khaḍgāṁśca gavayāṁstathā
he, roaming in that region of the forest, struck down deer, hares, boars, rhinoceroses, and wild oxen too,
Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.1.12.5)
śarabhānmahiṣāṁścaiva sāmbharānvanakukkuṭān nighnanmedhyān paśūn rājā kumāravanamāviśat
sharabhas, buffaloes, sambar deer, and jungle-fowl — slaying these pure animals, the king entered the Kumara-forest.
Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.1.12.6)
meroradhastale divyaṁ mandāradrumarājitam aśokalatikākīrṇaṁ bakulairadhivāsitam
— at the foot of Meru, a divine forest, graced with mandara trees, filled with ashoka creepers, fragrant with bakula blossoms,
Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.1.12.7)
sālaistālaistamālaiśca campakaiḥ panasaistathā āmrairnīpairmadhūkaiśca mādhavīmaṇḍapāvṛtam
with sala, tala, and tamala trees, with champaka and jackfruit trees too, with mango, nipa, and madhuka trees, enclosed with bowers of madhavi-creeper,
Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.1.12.8)
dāḍimairnārikelaiśca kadalīkhaṇḍamaṇḍitam yūthikāmālatīkundapuṣpavallīsamāvṛtam
adorned with pomegranate and coconut trees and groves of plantain, covered over with vines of yuthika, malati, and kunda flowers,
Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.1.12.9)
haṁsakāraṇḍavākīrṇaṁ kīcakadhvanināditam bhramarālirutārāmaṁ vanaṁ sarvasukhāvaham
filled with swans and karandava ducks, resounding with the sound of bamboo-flutes, echoing with the humming of rows of bees — a forest bringing every delight.
Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.1.12.10)
dṛṣṭvā pramudito rājā sudyumnaḥ sevakairvṛtaḥ vṛkṣānsupuṣpitānvīkṣya kokilārāvamaṇḍitān
Seeing it, King Sudyumna, surrounded by his attendants, was delighted; beholding the trees richly in flower, graced with the calls of cuckoos,
Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.1.12.11)
praviṣṭastatra rājarṣiḥ strītvamāpa kṣaṇāttataḥ aśvo'pi vaḍavā jātaścintāviṣṭaḥ sa bhūpatiḥ
the royal sage entered there, and in an instant took on the state of a woman; even his horse became a mare, and that king fell into anxious thought.
Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.1.12.12)
kimetaditi cintārtaścintyamānaḥ punaḥ punaḥ duḥkhaṁ bahutaraṁ prāptaḥ sudyumno lajjayānvitaḥ
'What is this?' — tormented with anxiety, pondering again and again, Sudyumna fell into very great distress, overcome with shame.
Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.1.12.13)
kiṁ karomi kathaṁ yāmi gṛhaṁ strībhāvasaṁyutaḥ kathaṁ rājyaṁ kariṣyāmi kena vā vañcito hyaham
'What shall I do? How shall I go home, now become a woman? How shall I rule my kingdom? By whom, indeed, have I been thus deceived?'
Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.1.12.14)
ṛṣaya ūcuḥ sūtāścaryamidaṁ proktaṁ tvayā yallomaharṣaṇa sudyumnaḥ strītvamāpanno bhūpatirdevasannibhaḥ
The sages said: O Suta, son of Lomaharshana, this wondrous thing you have told — that King Sudyumna, godlike, took on the state of a woman —
Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.1.12.15)
kiṁ tatkāraṇamācakṣva vane tatra manohare kiṁ kṛtaṁ tena rājñā ca vistaraṁ vada suvrata
— tell us the cause of this, and what happened in that enchanting forest; what did that king do? Tell us in detail, O one of noble vow.
Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.1.12.16)
sūta uvāca ekadā giriśaṁ draṣṭumṛṣayaḥ sanakādayaḥ diśo vitimirābhāsāḥ kurvantaḥ samupāgaman
Suta said: Once, the sages headed by Sanaka, on their way to see the mountain-dweller, came there, lighting up the quarters of the sky, dispelling their darkness.
Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.1.12.17)
tasmiṁśca samaye tatra śaṅkaraḥ pramadāyutaḥ krīḍāsakto mahādevo vivastrā kāminī śivā
At that very time, there, Shankara was together with his beloved; the great god was absorbed in amorous play, and his beloved, Shiva, was without clothes.
Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.1.12.18)
utsaṅge saṁsthitā bhartū ramamāṇā manoramā tānvilokyāmbikā devī vivastrā vrīḍitā bhṛśam
— seated in her husband's lap, enchanting, taking her pleasure — seeing them, the Devi Ambika, unclothed, became exceedingly abashed.
Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.1.12.19)
bharturaṅkātsamutthāya vastramādāya paryadhāt lajjāviṣṭā sthitā tatra vepamānātimāninī
Rising up from her husband's lap, she took her garment and put it on; overcome with shame, that most dignified one stood there trembling.
Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.1.12.20)
ṛṣayo'pi tayorvīkṣya prasaṅgaṁ ramamāṇayoḥ parivṛtya yayustūrṇaṁ naranārāyaṇāśramam
The sages too, seeing the two of them thus engaged in their pleasure, turned away and went swiftly to the hermitage of Nara-Narayana.
Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.1.12.21)
hrīyutāṁ kāminīṁ vīkṣya provāca bhagavānharaḥ kathaṁ lajjāturāsi tvaṁ sukhaṁ te prakaromyaham
Seeing his beloved so overcome with shame, the Lord Hara said: 'Why are you so distressed with shame? I shall bring you comfort.'
Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.1.12.22)
adyaprabhṛti yo mohātpumānko'pi varānane vanaṁ ca praviśedetatsa vai yoṣidbhaviṣyati
'From this day forward, whatever man, through folly, O fair-faced one, should enter this forest — he shall indeed become a woman.'
Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.1.12.23)
iti śaptaṁ vanaṁ tena ye jānanti janāḥ kvacit varjayantīha te kāmaṁ vanaṁ doṣasamṛddhimat
Thus was that forest cursed by him; whatever people anywhere know of this indeed avoid this forest, so rich in this affliction.
Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.1.12.24)
sudyumnastu tadajñānātpraviṣṭaḥ sacivaiḥ saha tathaiva strītvamāpannastaiḥ saheti na saṁśayaḥ
But Sudyumna, in ignorance of this, entered together with his ministers, and, along with them, likewise took on the state of a woman — there is no doubt of this.
Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.1.12.25)
cintāviṣṭaḥ sa rājarṣirna jagāma gṛhaṁ hriyā vicacāra bahistasmādvanadeśāditastataḥ
That royal sage, overwhelmed with anxiety, did not go home out of shame, but wandered about outside, away from that region of the forest, here and there.
Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.1.12.26)
ileti nāma samprāptaṁ strītve tena mahātmanā vicaraṁstatra samprāpto budhaḥ somasuto yuvā
That great soul, in his state as a woman, received the name Ila; wandering there, the youthful Budha, son of Soma, arrived and met her.
Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.1.12.27)
strībhiḥ parivṛtāṁ tāṁ tu dṛṣṭvā kāntāṁ manoramām hāvabhāvakalāyuktāṁ cakame bhagavāmbudhaḥ
Seeing her, surrounded by women, that lovely and enchanting woman, endowed with graceful gestures and expressions, the Lord Budha fell in love with her.
Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.1.12.28)
sāpi taṁ cakame kāntaṁ budhaṁ somasutaṁ patim saṁyogastatra sañjātastayoḥ premṇā parasparam
She too fell in love with that handsome Budha, son of Soma, as her husband; and their union came about there, through mutual love.
Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.1.12.29)
sa tasyāṁ janayāmāsa purūravasamātmajam ilāyāṁ somaputrastu cakravartinamuttamam
He begot in her, in Ila, a son named Pururavas — the son of the Moon's son, a supreme universal sovereign.
Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.1.12.30)
sā prāsūta sutaṁ bālā cintāviṣṭā vane sthitā sasmāra svakulācāryaṁ vasiṣṭhaṁ munisattamam
That young woman gave birth to the son while staying in the forest, absorbed in anxious thought; she remembered Vasishtha, the best of sages, the preceptor of her own family.
Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.1.12.31)
sa tadāsya daśāṁ dṛṣṭvā sudyumnasya kṛpānvitaḥ atoṣayanmahādevaṁ śaṅkaraṁ lokaśaṅkaram
He, seeing Sudyumna's condition, filled with compassion, then propitiated the great god Shankara, the benefactor of the world.
Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.1.12.32)
tasmai sa bhagavāṁstuṣṭaḥ pradadau vāñchitaṁ varam vasiṣṭhaḥ prārthayāmāsa puṁstvaṁ rājñaḥ priyasya ca
That lord, pleased, granted him the desired boon; Vasishtha prayed for the manhood of the king, his beloved disciple.
Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.1.12.33)
śaṅkarastu nijāṁ vācamṛtāṁ kurvannuvāca ha māsaṁ pumāṁstu bhavitā māsaṁ strī bhūpatiḥ kila
But Shankara, making his own word true, said: 'For one month the king shall indeed be a man, and for one month a woman.'
Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.1.12.34)
itthaṁ prāpya varaṁ rājā jagāma svagṛhaṁ punaḥ cakre rājyaṁ sa dharmātmā vasiṣṭhasyāpyanugrahāt
Having thus obtained this boon, the king went back again to his own home; that righteous-souled one ruled his kingdom, by the grace of Vasishtha too.
Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.1.12.35)
strītve tiṣṭhati harmyeṣu puṁstve rājyaṁ praśāsti ca prajāstasminsamudvignā nābhyanandanmahīpatim
In his female state he stayed in the inner apartments, and in his male state he governed the kingdom; his subjects, distressed by this, did not wholly delight in their king.
Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.1.12.36)
kāle tu yauvanaṁ prāptaḥ putraḥ purūravāstadā pratiṣṭhāṁ nṛpatistasmai dattvā rājyaṁ vanaṁ yayau
In time, his son Pururavas reached youth; the king, having given the kingdom's establishment over to him, went to the forest.
Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.1.12.37)
gatvā tasminvane ramye nānādrumasamākule nāradānmantramāsādya navākṣaramanuttamam
Having gone into that lovely forest, filled with various trees, he obtained from Narada the unsurpassed nine-syllabled mantra.
Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.1.12.38)
jajāpa mantramatyarthaṁ premapūritamānasaḥ parituṣṭā tadā devī saguṇā tāriṇī śivā
He recited the mantra intently, his mind filled with love; then the Devi, endowed with qualities, the deliverer, the auspicious one, became well pleased.
Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.1.12.39)
siṁhārūḍhā sthitā cāgre divyarūpā manoramā vāruṇīpānasammattā madāghūrṇitalocanā
She stood there before him, mounted on a lion, of divine and enchanting form, as if intoxicated by drinking the Varuni wine, her eyes rolling with the intoxication.
Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.1.12.40)
dṛṣṭvā tāṁ divyarūpāṁ ca premākulitalocanaḥ praṇamya śirasā prītyā tuṣṭāva jagadambikām
Seeing her of divine form, his eyes overwhelmed with love, he bowed his head with affection, and praised the mother of the world.
Verse 41 (devibhagavatam.1.12.41)
ilovāca divyaṁ ca te bhagavati prathitaṁ svarūpaṁ dṛṣṭaṁ mayā sakalalokahitānurūpam vande tvadaṅghrikamalaṁ surasaṅghasevyaṁ kāmapradaṁ janani cāpi vimuktidaṁ ca
Ila said: I have seen, O Bhagavati, your renowned divine form, in keeping with the welfare of all worlds; I bow to your lotus feet, served by the hosts of gods, granter of desire, O mother, and giver of liberation too.
Verse 42 (devibhagavatam.1.12.42)
ko vetti te'mba bhuvi martyatanurnikāmaṁ muhyanti yatra munayaśca surāśca sarve aiśvaryametadakhilaṁ kṛpaṇe dayāṁ ca dṛṣṭvaiva devi sakalaṁ kila vismayo me
Who among mortal-bodied beings on this earth truly knows you, O mother? Even all the sages and gods are utterly bewildered there. Seeing this whole display of sovereign power, and your compassion for the wretched, O Devi, I am indeed filled with wonder.
Verse 43 (devibhagavatam.1.12.43)
śambhurhariḥ kamalajo maghavā raviśca vitteśavahnivaruṇāḥ pavanaśca somaḥ jānanti naiva vasavo'pi hi te prabhāvaṁ budhyetkathaṁ tava guṇānaguṇo manuṣyaḥ
Shambhu, Hari, the lotus-born one, Maghavan, and the Sun; the lord of wealth, Fire, and Varuna; the Wind, and Soma; even the Vasus do not know your power — how, then, could an unqualified man understand your qualities?
Verse 44 (devibhagavatam.1.12.44)
jānāti viṣṇuramitadyutiramba sākṣā\- ttvāṁ sāttvikīmudadhijāṁ sakalārthadāṁ ca ko rājasīṁ hara umāṁ kila tāmasīṁ tvāṁ vedāmbike na tu punaḥ khalu nirguṇāṁ tvām
Vishnu of measureless splendor, O mother, knows you directly as the sattvic one, born of the ocean, the giver of every aim of life; Hara knows you as the rajasic Uma — others know you as the tamasic one; but no one at all, O mother, truly knows you as beyond the gunas.
Verse 45 (devibhagavatam.1.12.45)
kvāhaṁ sumandamatirapratimaprabhāvaḥ kvāyaṁ tavātinipuṇo mayi suprasādaḥ jāne bhavāni caritaṁ karuṇāsametaṁ yatsevakāṁśca dayase tvayi bhāvayuktān
Where am I, so dull of intellect? And where is this most refined, gracious favor of yours toward me, O one of matchless power? I know, O Bhavani, your compassionate way, in that you show mercy to your servants who are devoted to you in feeling.
Verse 46 (devibhagavatam.1.12.46)
vṛttastvayā harirasau vanajeśayāpi naivācaratyapi mudaṁ madhusūdanaśca pādau tavādipuruṣaḥ kila pāvakena kṛtvā karoti ca kareṇa śubhau pavitrau
Even Hari, though the lord reclining on the lotus-couch, and even Madhusudana, though otherwise a source of joy, is held entirely within your control; the Primal Person himself, indeed, having purified them with fire, touches your two auspicious, sacred feet with his own hand.
Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.1.12.47)
vāñchatyaho hariraśoka ivātikāmaṁ pādāhatiṁ pramuditaḥ puruṣaḥ purāṇaḥ tāṁ tvaṁ karoṣi ruṣitā praṇataṁ ca pāde dṛṣṭvā patiṁ sakaladevanutaṁ smarārtam
Ah, Hari, delighted, longs greatly, like the ashoka tree, for the touch of your foot, that Primeval Person; and you, when angered, strike him with your foot, having seen your husband, praised by all the gods, tormented by desire, prostrate before you.
Verse 48 (devibhagavatam.1.12.48)
vakṣaḥsthale vasasi devi sadaiva tasya paryaṅkavatsucarite vipule'tiśānte saudāminīva sughane suvibhūṣite ca kiṁ te na vāhanamasau jagadīśvaro'pi
O Devi, you ever dwell upon his broad, most tranquil chest, of good conduct, as upon a couch — like lightning upon a rich, richly adorned raincloud; is not even that lord of the world your very vehicle?
Verse 49 (devibhagavatam.1.12.49)
tvaṁ cejjahāsi madhusūdanamamba kopā\- nnaivārcito'pi sa bhavetkila śaktihīnaḥ pratyakṣameva puruṣaṁ svajanāstvajanti śāntaṁ śriyojjhitamatīva guṇairviyuktam
If you, O mother, in anger, should abandon Madhusudana, he would indeed become powerless, unworshipped even though he is otherwise the Lord; for even one's own kin directly abandon a person who is calm, stripped of fortune, and utterly bereft of good qualities.
Verse 50 (devibhagavatam.1.12.50)
brahmādayaḥ suragaṇā na tu kiṁ yuvatyo ye tvatpadāmbujamaharniśamāśrayanti manye tvayaiva vihitāḥ khalu te pumāṁsaḥ kiṁ varṇayāmi tava śaktimanantavīrye
Brahma and the other hosts of gods — are they not, indeed, like young women, who take refuge in your lotus feet day and night? I think that it is by you alone, indeed, that they are made into men of any capability at all; how, then, shall I describe your power, O you of boundless might?
Verse 51 (devibhagavatam.1.12.51)
tvaṁ nāpumānna ca pumāniti me vikalpo yākāsi devi saguṇā nanu nirguṇā vā tāṁ tvāṁ namāmi satataṁ kila bhāvayukto vāñchāmi bhaktimacalāṁ tvayi mātaraṁ tu
'You are neither not-male nor male' — such is my uncertain notion of you, O Devi, whether you exist as one with qualities or, indeed, without them. I bow to you, that very reality, always, indeed, with feeling; I desire unwavering devotion to you, O mother.
Verse 52 (devibhagavatam.1.12.52)
sūta uvāca iti stutvā mahīpālo jagāma śaraṇaṁ tadā parituṣṭā dadau devī tatra sāyujyamātmani
Suta said: Having thus praised her, the king then went for refuge to her; the Devi, well pleased, granted him there union with her own self.
Verse 53 (devibhagavatam.1.12.53)
sudyumnastu tataḥ prāpa padaṁ paramakaṁ sthiram tasyā devyāḥ prasādena munīnāmapi durlabham
Sudyumna then attained that supreme, unshakable state, by the grace of that Devi, hard to attain even for sages.
