Skandha 2 · Chapter 9

King Parikshit's Life in the Hidden House

Chapter 8All chaptersChapter 10

Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.2.9.1)

parīkṣiduvāca kāmārtaḥ sa munirgatvā ruruḥ supto nijāśrame pitā papraccha dīnaṁ taṁ kiṁ ruro vimanā asi

Parikshit said: Tormented by desire, that sage Ruru went to his own hermitage and lay down there. His father asked that despondent boy, "Ruru, why are you so downcast?"

Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.2.9.2)

sa tamāhātikāmārtaḥ sthūlakeśasya cāśrame kanyā pramadvarā nāma sā me bhāryā bhavediti

That greatly desire-stricken son said to his father, "In Sthulakesha's hermitage there is a girl named Pramadvara — that she become my wife, this alone is my wish."

Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.2.9.3)

sa gatvā pramatistūrṇaṁ sthūlakeśaṁ mahāmunim pramuhya sumukhaṁ kṛtvā yayāce tāṁ varānanām

Then Pramati went at once to the great sage Sthulakesha, and, most humbly, entreated him for that excellent maiden's hand.

Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.2.9.4)

dadau vācaṁ sthūlakeśaḥ pradāsyāmi śubhe'hani vivāhārthaṁ ca sambhāraṁ racayāmāsaturvane

Sthulakesha gave his word: "I shall give her to you on an auspicious day." And they began to prepare all the necessary arrangements for the wedding there in the forest.

Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.2.9.5)

pramatiḥ sthūlakeśaśca vivāhārthaṁ samudyatau babhūvaturmahātmānau samīpasthau tapovane

Pramati and Sthulakesha, both great souls, occupied with the wedding preparations, remained there close by that forest hermitage of penance.

Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.2.9.6)

tasminnavasare kanyā ramamāṇā gṛhāṅgaṇe prasuptaṁ pannagaṁ pādenāspṛśaccārulocanā

In the meantime, that girl, playing in the courtyard of the house, touched a sleeping snake with her foot — that fair-eyed Pramadvara.

Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.2.9.7)

daṣṭā tu pannagenātha sā mamāra varāṅganā kolāhalastadā jāto mṛtāṁ dṛṣṭvā pramadvarām

Bitten by the snake, that excellent maiden died. Beholding the dead Pramadvara, a great uproar arose there at once.

Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.2.9.8)

militā munayaḥ sarve cukruśuḥ śokasaṁyutāḥ bhūmau tāṁ patitāṁ dṛṣṭvā pitā tasyātiduḥkhitaḥ

All the sages gathered there and cried out, overwhelmed with grief. Seeing her fallen upon the ground, her father grew utterly desolate,

Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.2.9.9)

ruroda vigataprāṇāṁ dīpyamānāṁ sutejasā ruruḥ śrutvā tadākrandaṁ darśanārthaṁ samāgataḥ

and wept for his radiant daughter, now lifeless. Hearing that lament, Ruru too came to that place to see for himself.

Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.2.9.10)

dadarśa patitāṁ tatra sajīvāmiva kāminīm rudantaṁ sthūlakeśaṁ ca dṛṣṭvānyānṛṣisattamān

There he saw his beloved lying upon the ground, as if still alive; and he saw too the weeping Sthulakesha and the other excellent sages there.

Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.2.9.11)

ruruḥ sthānādbahirgatvā ruroda virahākulaḥ aho daivena sarpo'yaṁ preṣitaḥ paramādbhutaḥ

Ruru, going out from that place, wept, distraught with the anguish of separation — "Alas, fate has sent this most strange serpent,

Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.2.9.12)

mama śarmavighātāya duḥkhaheturayaṁ kila kiṁ karomi kva gacchāmi mṛtā me prāṇavallabhā

come solely to shatter my happiness and bring me sorrow. What am I to do now, where shall I go? She, dearer to me than my very life, is dead.

Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.2.9.13)

na vai jīvitumicchāmi viyuktaḥ priyayānayā nāliṅgitā varārohā na mayā cumbitā mukhe

Parted from her, I have no wish to go on living. I never even embraced that excellent woman, nor kissed her lips.

Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.2.9.14)

na pāṇigrahaṇaṁ prāptaṁ mandabhāgyena sarvathā lājāhomastathā cāgnau na kṛtastvanayā saha

Ill-fated as I am, I never even took her hand in marriage, nor performed the offering of parched grain into the fire with her.

Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.2.9.15)

mānuṣyaṁ dhigidaṁ kāmaṁ gacchantvadya mamāsavaḥ duḥkhitasya na vā mṛtyurvāñchitaḥ samupaiti hi

Curses upon this mortal life! Now let my own breath depart too. Yet even the death a grieving man desires does not readily come, this is true.

Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.2.9.16)

sukhaṁ tarhi kathaṁ divyamāpyate bhuvi vāñchitam prapatāmi hrade ghore pāvake prapatāmyaham

How then can one obtain the divine happiness one desires upon this earth? Let me throw myself into some fearsome deep pool, or cast myself into fire,

Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.2.9.17)

viṣamadmi gale pāśaṁ kṛtvā prāṇāṁstyajāmyaham vilapyaivaṁ rurustatra vicārya manasā punaḥ

or swallow poison, or bind a noose about my neck and give up my life." Thus lamenting there, Ruru once more began to reflect in his mind,

Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.2.9.18)

upāyaṁ cintayāmāsa sthitastasminnadītaṭe maraṇātkiṁ phalaṁ me syādātmahatyā duratyayā

and, standing there on the riverbank, began to consider a remedy — "What good would my own death bring? Self-slaughter is a grievous act, hard to overcome.

Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.2.9.19)

duḥkhitaśca pitā me syājjananī cātiduḥkhitā daivastuṣṭo bhavetkāmaṁ dṛṣṭvā māṁ tyaktajīvitam

My father would grieve, and my mother too would be plunged into deep sorrow. Fate would surely be pleased indeed, seeing me abandon my own life,

Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.2.9.20)

sarvaḥ pramuditaśca syānmatkṣaye nātra saṁśayaḥ upakāraḥ priyāyāḥ kaḥ paraloke bhavedapi

and everyone else would be glad at my ruin, of that there is no doubt. And what good, then, would my death do my beloved in the world beyond?

Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.2.9.21)

mṛte mayyātmaghātena virahātpīḍite'pi ca paraloke priyā sāpi na me syādātmaghātinaḥ

If I die by my own hand, even though tormented by our separation, that beloved of mine shall never be granted to me, a suicide, in the world hereafter.

Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.2.9.22)

etadarthaṁ mṛte doṣā mayi naivāmṛte punaḥ vimṛśyaiva rurustatra snātvācamya śuciḥ sthitaḥ

Therefore my dying would only bring fault upon me, whereas living would not." Thinking thus, Ruru bathed there, sipped water in ritual purification, and stood there, made pure.

Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.2.9.23)

abravīdvacanaṁ kṛtvā jalaṁ pāṇāvasau muniḥ yanmayā sukṛtaṁ kiñcitkṛtaṁ devārcanādikam

Then that sage, taking water in his hand, spoke these words: "Whatever merit I have earned — worship of the gods and the like,

Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.2.9.24)

guravaḥ pūjitā bhaktyā hutaṁ japtaṁ tapaḥ kṛtam adhītāstvakhilā vedā gāyatrī saṁskṛtā yadi

devoted worship of my elders, offerings, japa, austerity, the study of the entire Veda, the sacrament of the Gayatri — if all this be true,

Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.2.9.25)

ravirārādhitastena sañjīvatu mama priyā yadi jīvenna me kāntā tyaje prāṇānahaṁ tataḥ

and if I have duly worshipped Surya, then by that merit let my beloved live again. If she does not, then I too shall give up my own life."

Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.2.9.26)

ityuktvā tajjalaṁ bhūmau cikṣepārādhya devatāḥ rājovāca evaṁ vilapatastasya bhāryayā duḥkhitasya ca

Having spoken thus, worshipping the gods, he poured that water upon the ground. The king said: As he thus lamented, grief-stricken over his lost wife,

Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.2.9.27)

devadūtastadābhyetya vākyamāha ruruṁ tataḥ devadūta uvāca mākārṣīḥ sāhasaṁ brahmankathaṁ jīvenmṛtā priyā

a messenger of the gods appeared there and spoke these words to Ruru. The divine messenger said: "O brahmin, do not undertake such a rash act — how could your dead beloved come back to life?

Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.2.9.28)

gatāyureṣā suśroṇī gandharvāpsarasoḥ sutā anyāṁ kāmaya cārvaṅgīṁ mṛteyaṁ cāvivāhitā

This lovely woman's span of life is spent — she is the daughter of a gandharva and an apsara. O fair one, desire some other woman instead; she has died unmarried.

Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.2.9.29)

O foolish one, why do you weep? What real bond of love do you have with her?" Ruru said: "O divine messenger, I shall never choose any other woman.

Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.2.9.30)

yadi jīvenna jīvedvā martavyaṁ cādhunā mayā rājovāca viditveti haṭhaṁ tasya devadūto mudānvitaḥ

Whether she lives or not, I myself must now surely die." The king said: Perceiving this determination of his, that divine messenger, pleased,

Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.2.9.31)

uvāca vacanaṁ tathyaṁ satyaṁ cātimanoharam upāyaṁ śṛṇu viprendra vihitaṁ yatsuraiḥ purā

spoke these true and most gracious words: "O foremost of brahmins, hear the remedy that was ordained by the gods in earlier times —

Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.2.9.32)

āyuṣo'rdhapradānena jīvayāśu pramadvarām rururuvāca āyuṣo'rdhaṁ prayacchāmi kanyāyai nātra saṁśayaḥ

by giving half of your own lifespan, you can at once restore Pramadvara to life." Ruru said: "I give half my lifespan to that girl, without any doubt.

Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.2.9.33)

adya pratyāvṛtaprāṇā prottiṣṭhatu mama priyā viśvāvasustadā tatra vimānena samāgataḥ

May her breath return this very day; may my beloved rise up." At that moment Vishvavasu (the gandharva) too arrived there in his aerial chariot,

Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.2.9.34)

jñātvā putrīṁ mṛtāṁ cāśu svargalokātpramadvarām tato gandharvarājaśca devadūtaśca sattamaḥ

learning from heaven that his daughter Pramadvara had suddenly died. Then that king of gandharvas and that excellent divine messenger, both together —

Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.2.9.35)

dharmarājamupetyedaṁ vacanaṁ pratyabhāṣatām dharmarāja ruroḥ patnī sutā viśvāvasostathā

went to Dharmaraja and spoke these words to him: "O Dharmaraja, Ruru's intended wife, who is also the daughter of Vishvavasu —

Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.2.9.36)

mṛtā pramadvarā kanyā daṣṭā sarpeṇa cādhunā sā rurorāyuṣo'rdhena martukāmasya sūryaja

that maiden Pramadvara has died, just now bitten by a snake. O son of Surya (Yama), by the gift of half the lifespan of that Ruru, who was ready to give up his own life —

Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.2.9.37)

samuttiṣṭhatu tanvaṅgī vratacaryāprabhāvataḥ dharma uvāca viśvāvasusutāṁ kanyāṁ devadūta yadīcchasi

let that fair-limbed one, by the power of his vow's due observance, rise up." Dharmaraja said: "O divine messenger, if you wish, let this daughter of Vishvavasu

Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.2.9.38)

uttiṣṭhatvāyuṣo'rdhena ruruṁ gatvā tvamarpaya rājovāca evamuktastato gatvā jīvayitvā pramadvarām

rise up by that half-span; go, deliver the remainder (his own remaining half) to Ruru." The king said: Thus commanded, that divine messenger went, and, restoring Pramadvara to life,

Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.2.9.39)

ruroḥ samarpayāmāsa devadūtastvarānvitaḥ tataḥ śubhe'hni vidhinā ruruṇāpi vivāhitā

delivered her at once to Ruru. Then, on an auspicious day, she was duly married to Ruru in proper form as well.

Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.2.9.40)

itthaṁ copāyayogena mṛtāpyujjīvitā tadā upāyastu prakartavyaḥ sarvathā śāstrasammataḥ

Thus, through the application of a remedy, she who had died was that time brought back to life. Therefore a remedy sanctioned by the scriptures should always be undertaken —

Verse 41 (devibhagavatam.2.9.41)

maṇimantrauṣadhībhiśca vidhivatprāṇarakṣaṇe ityuktvā sacivān rājā kalpayitvā surakṣakān

by gems, mantras, and herbs, applied properly, for the protection of one's life." Having spoken thus to his ministers, the king resolved to arrange guards for his own protection,

Verse 42 (devibhagavatam.2.9.42)

kārayitvātha prāsādaṁ saptabhūmikamuttamam ārurohottarāsūnuḥ sacivaiḥ saha tatkṣaṇam

and, having had an excellent seven-storeyed palace built, the son of Uttara (Parikshit) at once ascended it together with his ministers.

Verse 43 (devibhagavatam.2.9.43)

maṇimantradharāḥ śūrāḥ sthāpitāstatra rakṣaṇe preṣayāmāsa bhūpālo muniṁ gauramukhaṁ tataḥ

Heroes bearing gems and mantras were stationed there for his protection. The king then sent for the sage named Gauramukha,

Verse 44 (devibhagavatam.2.9.44)

prasādārthaṁ sevakasya kṣamasveti punaḥ punaḥ brāhmaṇānsiddhamantrajñān rakṣaṇārthamitastataḥ

asking him again and again to show favour to his servant (the king himself, in humility); and he also appointed brahmins accomplished in mantras to guard him from all sides.

Verse 45 (devibhagavatam.2.9.45)

mantriputraḥ sthitastatra sthāpayāmāsa dantinaḥ na kaścidāruhettatra prāsāde cātirakṣite

A minister's son too was stationed there, and elephants too were posted at that place. It was arranged that no one at all could ascend into that most well-guarded palace;

Verse 46 (devibhagavatam.2.9.46)

vāto'pi na carettatra praveśe vinivāryate bhakṣyabhojyādikaṁ rājā tatrasthaśca cakāra saḥ

even the wind, upon entry, was to be restrained. The king remained there, arranging for food and all his needs,

Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.2.9.47)

stānasandhyādikaṁ karma tatraiva vinivartya ca rājakāryāṇi sarvāṇi tatrasthaścākaronnṛpaḥ

and his bathing, twilight prayers, and every other rite were likewise performed there. The king, remaining in that very place, conducted all the affairs of state,

Verse 48 (devibhagavatam.2.9.48)

mantribhiḥ saha sammantrya gaṇayandivasānapi kaścicca kaśyapo nāma brāhmaṇo mantrisattamaḥ

consulting with his ministers, and counting off the days one by one. At that very time a brahmin named Kashyapa, foremost among those versed in mantras,

Verse 49 (devibhagavatam.2.9.49)

śuśrāva ca tathā śāpaṁ prāptaṁ rājñā mahātmanā sa dhanārthī dvijaśreṣṭhaḥ kaśyapaḥ samacintayat

heard also that this curse had befallen that great-souled king. That excellent brahmin, Kashyapa, desirous of wealth, began to think within himself —

Verse 50 (devibhagavatam.2.9.50)

vrajāmi tatra yatrāste śapto rājā dvijena ha iti kṛtvā matiṁ vipraḥ svagṛhānniḥsṛtaḥ pathi

"I shall go to that place where the king dwells, cursed by that brahmin." Having so resolved, that brahmin set out from his home upon the road —

Verse 51 (devibhagavatam.2.9.51)

kaśyapo mantravidvidvāndhanārthī munisattamaḥ

that Kashyapa, learned in the science of mantras, wise, desirous of wealth, an excellent sage.
