vyāsa uvāca yudhājittvatha saṅgrāmādgatvā'yodhyāṁ mahābalaḥ manoramāṁ ca papraccha sudarśanajighāṁsayā

Vyasa said: Then the mighty Yudhajit, having returned from the battlefield to Ayodhya, inquired about Manorama, desiring to kill Sudarshana.

Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.3.16.2)

sevakān preṣayāmāsa kva gateti muhurvadan śubhe dine'tha dauhitraṁ sthāpayāmāsa cāsane

He sent out servants, repeatedly asking where she had gone; then, on an auspicious day, he installed his daughter's son upon the throne.

Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.3.16.3)

mantribhiśca vasiṣṭhena mantrairātharvaṇaiḥ śubhaiḥ abhiṣiktaśca sampūrṇaiḥ kalaśairjalapūritaiḥ

Together with the ministers and Vasishtha, he was anointed with auspicious Atharvan mantras, with full pitchers filled with water.

Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.3.16.4)

bherīśaṅkhaninādaiśca tūryāṇāṁ cātha niḥsvanaiḥ utsavastu nagaryā vai sambabhūva kurūdvaha

With the sounds of kettledrums and conches, and with the blare of trumpets, O foremost of the Kurus, a festival arose throughout the city.

Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.3.16.5)

viprāṇāṁ vedapāṭhaiśca bandināṁ stutibhistathā ayodhyā muditevāsījjayaśabdaiḥ sumaṅgalaiḥ

With the Brahmins' Vedic recitations and the bards' eulogies, Ayodhya, resounding with auspicious cries of victory, seemed to rejoice.

Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.3.16.6)

hṛṣṭapuṣṭajanākīrṇā stutivāditraniḥsvanā nave tasminmahīpāle pūrbabhau nūtaneva sā

Full of joyous and thriving people, resounding with eulogies and musical instruments, under that new king the city shone as though made new again.

Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.3.16.7)

kecitsādhujanā ye vai cakruḥ śokaṁ gṛhe sthitāḥ sudarśanaṁ vicintyādya kva gato'sau nṛpātmajaḥ

Yet some good people, remaining at home, grieved, thinking of Sudarshana: "Where has that prince gone today?"

Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.3.16.8)

manoramātisādhvī sā kva gatā sutasaṁyutā pitā'syā nihataḥ saṅkhye rājyalobhena vairiṇā

"Where has that most virtuous Manorama gone with her son? Her father was slain in battle by an enemy out of greed for the kingdom."

Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.3.16.9)

ityevaṁ cintyamānāste sādhavaḥ samabuddhayaḥ atiṣṭhanduḥkhitāstatra śatrujidvaśavartinaḥ

Thinking thus, those good people of like mind remained there, sorrowful, now living under the sway of that conqueror of foes.

Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.3.16.10)

yudhājidapi dauhitraṁ sthāpayitvā vidhānataḥ rājyañca mantrisātkṛtvā calitaḥ svāṁ purīṁ prati

Yudhajit too, having duly installed his grandson and entrusted the kingdom to the ministers, set out toward his own city.

Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.3.16.11)

śrutvā sudarśanaṁ tatra munīnāmāśrame sthitam hantukāmo jagāmāśu citrakūṭaṁ sa parvatam

Hearing that Sudarshana was dwelling there in the sages' hermitage, he, desiring to kill him, went swiftly toward Mount Chitrakuta.

Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.3.16.12)

niṣādādhipatiṁ śūraṁ puraskṛtya balābhidham durdarśākhyamagādāśu śṛṅgaverapurādhipam

Placing at the head the brave lord of the Nishadas, named Bala, he set out swiftly together with Durdarsha, the ruler of Shringaverapura.

Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.3.16.13)

śrutvā manoramā tatra babhūvātisuduḥkhitā āgacchantaṁ bālaputrā bhayārtā sainyasaṁyutam

Hearing this, Manorama, mother of the young boy, became greatly distressed, in fear of him coming with his army.

Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.3.16.14)

tamuvācātiśokārtā muniṁ sāśruvilocanā kiṁ karomi kva gacchāmi yudhājitsamupasthitaḥ

Overcome with grief, her eyes filled with tears, she said to the sage: "What shall I do, where shall I go? Yudhajit has arrived!

Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.3.16.15)

pitā me nihato'nena dauhitro bhūpatiḥ kṛtaḥ sutaṁ me hantukāmo'tra samāyāti balānvitaḥ

He is the one who slew my father and made his own grandson king. Now, desiring to kill my son, he comes here with his army.

Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.3.16.16)

purā śrutaṁ mayā svāminpāṇḍavā vai vane sthitāḥ munīnāmāśrame puṇye pāñcālyā sahitāstadā

O lord, I once heard that the Pandavas dwelt in the forest, in the sages' sacred hermitage, together then with the princess of Panchala."

Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.3.16.17)

gatāste mṛgayāṁ pārthā bhrātaraḥ pañca eva te draupadī saṁsthitā tatra munīnāmāśrame śubhe

"The five Partha brothers had gone out hunting, while Draupadi remained there in the sages' auspicious hermitage.

Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.3.16.18)

dhaumyo'trirgālavaḥ pailo jāvālirgautamo bhṛguḥ cyavanaścātrigotraśca kaṇvaścaiva jatuḥ kratuḥ

Dhaumya, Atri, Galava, Paila, Javali, Gautama, Bhrigu, Chyavana, and another sage of Atri's lineage, Kanva, Jatu, Kratu —

Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.3.16.19)

vītihotraḥ sumantuśca yajñadatto'tha vatsalaḥ rāśāsanaḥ kahoḍaśca yavakrīryajñakṛtkratuḥ

Vitihotra, Sumantu, Yajnadatta, Vatsala, Rashasana, Kahoda, Yavakri, and Yajnakritkratu —

Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.3.16.20)

ete cānye ca munayo bhāradvājādayaḥ śubhāḥ vedapāṭhayutāḥ sarve saṁsthitāścāśrame sthitāḥ

these and other auspicious sages headed by Bharadvaja, all devoted to Vedic recitation, dwelt there in the hermitage.

Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.3.16.21)

dāsībhiḥ sahitā tatra yājñasenī sthitā mune āśrame cārusarvāṅgī nirbhayā munisaṁvṛte

There, O sage, the daughter of Yajnasena, lovely in every limb, dwelt fearlessly in the hermitage, surrounded by sages, together with her maidservants.

Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.3.16.22)

pārthā mṛgānugāstāvatprayātāśca vanādvanam dhanurbāṇadharā vīrāḥ pañca vai śatrutāpanāḥ

Meanwhile the five Partha brothers, heroes bearing bow and arrow, tormentors of their foes, had gone from forest to forest in pursuit of deer.

Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.3.16.23)

tāvatsindhupatiḥ śrīmānmārgastho balasaṁyutaḥ āgataścāśramābhyāśe śrutvā tu nigamandhvanim

Meanwhile the glorious lord of Sindhu, who was on the road with his army, hearing the sound of Vedic recitation, came near the hermitage.

Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.3.16.24)

śrutvā vedadhvaniṁ rājā munīnāṁ bhāvitātmanām uttatāra rathāttūrṇaṁ darśanākāṅkṣayā nṛpaḥ

Hearing the sound of the Vedas of those purified-souled sages, the king quickly descended from his chariot, desiring to see them.

Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.3.16.25)

yadā niragamattatra bhṛtyadvayasamanvitaḥ vedapāṭhayutānvīkṣya munīnudyamasaṁsthitaḥ

When he came forward there, accompanied by two attendants, beholding the sages engaged in effort, occupied with Vedic recitation —

Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.3.16.26)

kṛtāñjalipuṭaḥ svāminsaṁsthito'tha jayadrathaḥ āśrame munibhirjuṣṭe bhūpatiḥ saṁviveśa ha

with folded hands, O lord, Jayadratha stood there, and the king entered the hermitage frequented by the sages.

Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.3.16.27)

tatropaviṣṭaṁ rājānaṁ draṣṭukāmāḥ striyastadā āyayurmunibhāryāśca ko'yamityabruvannṛpam

Then, desiring to see the seated king, the sages' wives came there and said of him, "Who is this?"

Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.3.16.28)

tāsāṁ madhye varārohā yājñasenī samāgatā jayadrathena dṛṣṭā sā rūpeṇa śrīrivāparā

Among them came the lovely Yajnaseni, and Jayadratha beheld her — in beauty like another Lakshmi.

Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.3.16.29)

tāṁ vilokyāsitāpāṅgīṁ devakanyāmivāparām papraccha nṛpatirdhaumyaṁ keyaṁ śyāmā varānanā

Beholding her, dark-eyed as though another daughter of the gods, the king asked Dhaumya: "Who is this dark, lovely-faced woman?

Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.3.16.30)

bhāryā kasya sutā kasya nāmnā kā varavarṇinī rūpalāvaṇyasaṁyuktā śacīva vasudhāṅgatā

Whose wife is she, whose daughter, what is her name — this woman of lovely complexion, endowed with beauty and grace, as though Shachi come down to earth?

Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.3.16.31)

barbūlavanamadhyasthā lavaṅgalatikā yathā rākṣasīvṛndagā nūnaṁ rambhevābhāti bhāminī

Like a clove-creeper standing amid a thorny thicket, this lovely woman shines here among a throng of forest-dwelling women, truly like Rambha.

Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.3.16.32)

satyaṁ vada mahābhāga kasyeyaṁ vallabhābalā rājapatnīva cābhāti naiṣā munivadhūrdvija

Tell me the truth, O fortunate one — whose beloved is this? She appears like a king's wife; she seems no sage's bride, O Brahmin."

Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.3.16.33)

dhaumya uvāca pāṇḍavānāṁ priyā bhāryā draupadī śubhalakṣaṇā pāñcālī sindhurājendra vasatyatra varāśrame

Dhaumya said: "O lord of Sindhu, this is Draupadi, the beloved wife of the Pandavas, of auspicious marks, the princess of Panchala — she dwells here in this excellent hermitage."

Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.3.16.34)

jayadratha uvāca kva gatāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ pañca śūrāḥ samprati viśrutāḥ vasantyatra vane vīrā vītaśokā mahābalāḥ

Jayadratha said: "Where have those five heroic, now so renowned Pandavas gone? Do these mighty, sorrow-free heroes dwell here in the forest?"

Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.3.16.35)

dhaumya uvāca mṛgayārthaṁ gatāḥ pañca pāṇḍavā rathasaṁsthitāḥ āgamiṣyanti madhyānhe mṛgānādāya pārthivāḥ

Dhaumya said: "The five Pandavas, mounted on their chariots, have gone out for the hunt; these princes will return at midday, bringing deer."

Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.3.16.36)

tacchrutvā vacanaṁ tasya udatiṣṭhadasau nṛpaḥ draupadīsannidhau gatvā pragamyedamuvāca ha

Hearing his words, that king rose up, and going near Draupadi, approached and spoke thus.

Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.3.16.37)

kuśalaṁ te varārohe kva gatāḥ patayaśca te ekādaśa gatānyadya varṣāṇi ca vane kila

"Are you well, O lovely one? Where have your husbands gone? Eleven years, it is said, have now passed in the forest."

Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.3.16.38)

draupadī tu tadovāca svasti te'stu nṛpātmaja viśramasvāśramābhyāśe kṣaṇādāyānti pāṇḍavāḥ

But Draupadi then said: "May you be well, O prince! Rest here near the hermitage; the Pandavas will arrive in but a moment."

Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.3.16.39)

evaṁ bruvantyāṁ tasyāṁ tu lobhāviṣṭaḥ sa bhūpatiḥ jahāra draupadīṁ vīro'nādṛtya munisattamān

While she was speaking thus, that king, overcome by desire, the hero, seized Draupadi, disregarding those greatest of sages.

Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.3.16.40)

kasyacinnaiva viśvāsaḥ kartavyaḥ sarvathā budhaiḥ kurvanduḥkhamavāpnoti dṛṣṭāntastvatra vai baliḥ

"One should never place full trust in anyone under any circumstance — one who does so meets with sorrow; the example here is Bali.

Verse 41 (devibhagavatam.3.16.41)

vairocanasutaḥ śrīmāndharmiṣṭhaḥ satyasaṅgaraḥ yajñakartā ca dātā ca śaraṇyaḥ sādhusammataḥ

The glorious son of Virochana, most righteous, true to his pledges, a performer of sacrifices, a giver of gifts, a refuge for those who sought him, esteemed by the virtuous —

Verse 42 (devibhagavatam.3.16.42)

nādharme nirataḥ kvāpi pralhādasya ca pautrakaḥ ekonaśatayajñānvai sa cakāra sadakṣiṇān

never devoted to unrighteousness in any way, that grandson of Prahlada performed ninety-nine sacrifices, each with full sacrificial fees.

Verse 43 (devibhagavatam.3.16.43)

sattvamūrttiḥ sadā viṣṇuḥ sevyaḥ sa yogināmapi nirvikāro'pi bhagavāndevakāryārthasiddhaye

Vishnu, ever the embodiment of goodness, worthy of service even by yogis — though changeless, the Lord took a form for the accomplishment of the gods' purpose.

Verse 44 (devibhagavatam.3.16.44)

kaśyapācca samudbhūto viṣṇuḥ kapaṭavāmanaḥ rājyaṁ chalena hṛtavānmahīṁ caiva sasāgarām

Born from Kashyapa, Vishnu, in the deceptive form of a dwarf, took away by trickery the kingdom and the whole earth together with its oceans.

Verse 45 (devibhagavatam.3.16.45)

so'bhavatsatyavāgrājā balirvairocanistadā kapaṭaṁ kṛtavānviṣṇurindrārthe tu mayā śrutam

He, King Bali, son of Virochana, was ever true to his word; but Vishnu, I have heard, practiced deceit for Indra's sake.

Verse 46 (devibhagavatam.3.16.46)

anyaḥ kiṁ na karotyevaṁ kṛtaṁ vai sattvamūrtinā vāmanaṁ rūpamāsthāya yajñapātaṁ cikīrṣatā

What would another not do, when such was done even by the embodiment of goodness — assuming the dwarf's form, intending to disrupt the sacrifice?

Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.3.16.47)

na ca viśvasitavyaṁ vai kadācitkenacittathā lobhaścetasi cetsvāminkīdṛkpāpakṛtaṁ bhayam

One should therefore never, under any circumstance, place trust in anyone; if greed is in the heart, O lord, what fear is there in doing sin?

Verse 48 (devibhagavatam.3.16.48)

lobhāhatāḥ prakurvanti pāpāni prāṇinaḥ kila paralokādbhayaṁ nāsti kasyacitkarhicinmune

Beings overcome by greed indeed commit sins; no fear of the world to come, O sage, remains in anyone at all.

Verse 49 (devibhagavatam.3.16.49)

manasā karmaṇā vācā parasvādānahetutaḥ prapatanti narāḥ samyaglobhopahatacetasaḥ

By thought, deed, and word, for the sake of taking others' wealth, men whose minds are wholly overcome by greed fall into ruin.

Verse 50 (devibhagavatam.3.16.50)

devānārādhya satataṁ vāñchanti ca dhanaṁ narāḥ na devāstatkare kṛtvā samarthā dātumañjasā

Men constantly worship the gods and long for wealth; yet the gods do not simply place it in their hands and give it so easily.

Verse 51 (devibhagavatam.3.16.51)

anyasyānīyate vittaṁ prayacchanti manīṣitam vāṇijyenātha dānena cauryeṇāpi balena vā

Wealth is brought from another and given as desired — through trade, through gift, through theft, or even through force.

Verse 52 (devibhagavatam.3.16.52)

vikrayārthaṁ gṛhītvā ca dhānyavastrādikaṁ bahu devānarcayate vaiśyo maharddhirme bhavediti

A merchant, having taken much grain, cloth and the like for sale, worships the gods, thinking, "May I become greatly prosperous."

Verse 53 (devibhagavatam.3.16.53)

nātra kiṁ paravittecchā vāṇijyena parantapa grahaṇakāle tu samprāpte maharghañcāpi kāṅkṣati

Is this not, O scorcher of foes, itself a desire for another's wealth through trade? And when the time of taking comes, he even wishes for a high price.

Verse 54 (devibhagavatam.3.16.54)

evaṁ hi prāṇinaḥ sarve parasvādānatatparāḥ vartante satataṁ brahman viśvāsaḥ kīdṛśaḥ punaḥ

Thus indeed all beings, O Brahmin, are ever intent on taking what belongs to another — so what trust, then, can there be?

Verse 55 (devibhagavatam.3.16.55)

vṛthā tīrthaṁ vṛthā dānaṁ vṛthā'dhyayanameva ca lobhamohāvṛtānāṁ vai kṛtaṁ tadakṛtaṁ bhavet

Vain is pilgrimage, vain is charity, vain even is study — for those overwhelmed by greed and delusion, whatever is done becomes as if undone.

Verse 56 (devibhagavatam.3.16.56)

tasmādenaṁ mahābhāga visarjaya gṛhaṁ prati saputrā'haṁ vasiṣyāmi jānakīvaddvijottama

Therefore, O great one, send this man back home; I, together with my son, shall dwell here like Janaki, O best of Brahmins."

Verse 57 (devibhagavatam.3.16.57)

ityukto'sau munistāvadgatvā yudhājitaṁ nṛpam uvāca vacanaṁ rājñe bhāradvājaḥ pratāpavān

Thus addressed, that mighty sage Bharadvaja then went to King Yudhajit and spoke these words to the king:

Verse 58 (devibhagavatam.3.16.58)

gaccha rājan yathākāmaṁ svapuraṁ nṛpasattama neyaṁ manoramābhyeti bālaputrā suduḥkhitā

"Go, O king, as you wish, back to your own city, O best of kings. This grieving Manorama, with her young son, will not go with you."

Verse 59 (devibhagavatam.3.16.59)

yudhājiduvāca mune muñca haṭhaṁ saumya visarjaya manoramām na ca yāsyāmyahaṁ muktvā neṣyāmyadya balātpunaḥ

Yudhajit said: "O gentle sage, abandon this obstinacy; give up Manorama. I shall not leave without her — today I shall take her away again by force."

Verse 60 (devibhagavatam.3.16.60)

ṛṣiruvāca nayasva yadi śaktiste balenādya mamāśramāt viśvāmitro yathā dhenuṁ vasiṣṭhasya muneḥ purā

The sage said: "If you have the power, take her by force today from my hermitage — as Vishvamitra once tried to take the sage Vasishtha's cow."
