Chapter 14All chaptersChapter 16

Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.3.15.1)

vyāsa uvāca saṁyuge ca sati tatra bhūpayorāhavāya samupāttaśastrayoḥ krodhalobhavaśayoḥ samaṁ tataḥ sambabhūva tumulastu vimardaḥ

Vyasa said: When the battle had begun there between the two kings, both having taken up weapons for combat, both in the grip of anger and greed, then a tumultuous clash broke out equally between them.

Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.3.15.2)

saṁsthitaḥ sa samare dhṛtacāpaḥ pārthivaḥ pṛthulabāhuyudhājit saṁyutaḥ svabalavāhanādikairāhavāya kṛtaniścayo nṛpaḥ

King Yudhajit, of broad arms, stood in that battle holding his bow, joined with his own forces, mounts, and the rest, the king resolved for combat.

Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.3.15.3)

vīrasena iha sainyasaṁyutaḥ kṣātradharmamanusṛtya saṅgare putrikātmajahitāya pārthivaḥ saṁsthitaḥ surapateḥ samatejāḥ

Virasena, here, joined with his army, following the duty of a kshatriya in battle, the king, of splendour equal to the lord of the gods, stood there for the welfare of his daughter's son.

Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.3.15.4)

sa bāṇavṛṣṭiṁ visasarja pārthivo yudhājitaṁ vīkṣya raṇe sthitañca giriṁ taḍitvāniva toyavṛṣṭibhiḥ krodhānvitaḥ satyaparākramo'sau

That king, of true prowess, filled with anger, seeing Yudhajit standing in the battlefield, released a shower of arrows upon him, like a rain-cloud upon a mountain with showers of water.

Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.3.15.5)

taṁ vīraseno viśikhaiḥ śilāśitaiḥ samāvṛṇodāśugamairajihmagaiḥ ciccheda bāṇaiśca śilīmukhānasau tenaiva muktānativegapātinaḥ

Virasena covered him with sharp, swift-flying, unswerving arrows; and he cut down, with his own arrows, the shafts released by him, which fell with tremendous speed.

Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.3.15.6)

gajarathaturagāṇāṁ sambabhūvātiyuddhaṁ suranaramunisaṅghairvīkṣitañcātighoram vitatavihagavṛndairāvṛtaṁ vyoma sadyaḥ piśitamaśitukāmaiḥ kāmagṛdhrādibhiśca

A great battle arose among the elephants, chariots, and horses, watched by hosts of gods, men, and sages, most terrible; the sky was instantly covered by vast flocks of birds — vultures and the like, desiring to eat the flesh.

Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.3.15.7)

tatrādbhutā kṣatajasindhuruvāha ghorā vṛndebhya eva gajavīraturaṅgamāṇām trāsāvahā nayanamārgagatā narāṇāṁ pāpātmanāṁ ravijamārgabhaveva kāmam

There flowed a wondrous, terrible river of blood, from the very hosts of elephants, heroes, and horses; it brought terror as it entered the sight of men — as if it were, indeed, the very path of Yama, the path of sinful souls.

Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.3.15.8)

kīrṇāni bhinnapuline naramastakāni keśāvṛtāni ca vibhānti yathaiva sindhau tumbīphalāni vihitāni vihartukāmairbālairyathā ravisutāprabhavaiśca nūnam

Human heads, covered with hair, scattered on the broken sandbanks of that blood-river, shone forth just as gourds set afloat in a river by children wishing to play.

Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.3.15.9)

vīraṁ mṛtaṁ bhuvi gataṁ patitaṁ rathādvai gṛdhraḥ palārthamupari bhramatīti manye jīvo'pyasau nijaśarīramavekṣya kāntaṁ kāṅkṣatyaho'tivivaśo'pi punaḥ praveṣṭum

A vulture circles above a hero, dead, fallen from his chariot to the ground, for the sake of eating flesh — so I imagine; and that soul too, beholding its own once-beloved body, longs, alas, though utterly helpless, to enter it once more.

Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.3.15.10)

ājau hato'pi nṛvaraḥ suvimānarūḍhaḥ svāṅke sthitāṁ suravadhūṁ pravadatyabhīṣṭam paśyādhunā mama śarīramidaṁ pṛthivyāṁ bāṇāhataṁ nipatitaṁ karabhoru kāntam

An excellent man, slain in the battle, mounted upon a fine celestial chariot, says to the divine maiden seated in his lap, whom he desires: "Behold now this body of mine, once beautiful, O you of elephant-trunk-like thighs, lying fallen upon the earth, struck by an arrow."

Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.3.15.11)

eko hatastu ripuṇaiva gato'ntarikṣaṁ devāṅganāṁ samadhigamya yuto vimāne tāvatpriyā hutavahe susamarpya dehaṁ jagrāha kāntamabalā sabalā svakīyā

One man, slain by the enemy, went up into the sky, and, having obtained a celestial maiden, joined her in a heavenly chariot; meanwhile his own beloved wife, having duly offered up her body into the fire, though weak in body, embraced her beloved with newfound strength.

Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.3.15.12)

yuddhe mṛtau ca subhaṭau divi saṅgatau tāvanyonyaśastranihatau saha samprayātau tatraiva jaghnaturalaṁ paramāhitāstrāvekāpsaro'rthavihatau kalahākulau ca

Two brave warriors, slain in battle, having killed each other with weapons, went together up to the heavens and met there; but there too, armed with their most powerful weapons, they fought fiercely against one another once more, embroiled in a quarrel for the sake of a single apsara.

Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.3.15.13)

kaścidyuvā samadhigamya surāṅganāṁ vai rūpādhikāṁ guṇavatīṁ kila bhaktiyuktaḥ svīyān guṇānpravitatānpravadaṁstadā'sau tāṁ premadāmanucakāra ca yogayuktaḥ

Some young man, having obtained a celestial woman of surpassing beauty and virtue, filled with devotion, then, extolling his own many virtues, endeared himself to her with love, united with her in that union.

Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.3.15.14)

bhaumaṁ rajo'tivitataṁ divi saṁsthitañca rātriṁ cakāra taraṇiñca samāvṛṇodyat magnaṁ tadeva rudhirāmbunidhāvakasmāt prādurbabhūva ravirapyatikāntiyuktaḥ

The dust of the earth, spread vastly and reaching up to the sky, turned day into night and covered the very sun; yet that same sun, though sunk as it were in the ocean of blood, suddenly reappeared, endowed with even greater splendour.

Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.3.15.15)

kaścidgatastu gaganaṁ kila devakanyāṁ samprāpya cāruvadanāṁ kila bhaktiyuktām nāṅgīcakāra caturo vratanāśabhīto yāsyatyayaṁ mama vṛthā hyanukūlaśabdaḥ

Some warrior, having gone into the sky, and having indeed obtained a beautiful-faced celestial maiden, devoted to him, did not accept her, fearing the loss of his vow, thinking: "This favourable word of hers will surely pass in vain for me."

Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.3.15.16)

saṅgrāme saṁvṛte tatra yudhājitpṛthivīpatiḥ jaghāna vīrasenaṁ taṁ bāṇaistīvraiḥ sudāruṇaiḥ

As the battle raged fiercely there, King Yudhajit slew that Virasena with sharp, most terrible arrows.

Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.3.15.17)

nihataḥ sa papātorvyāṁ chinnamūrdhā mahīpatiḥ prabhagnaṁ tadbalaṁ sarvaṁ nirgataṁ ca caturdiśam

Struck down, that king fell upon the earth, his head severed; his entire army was routed and scattered in all four directions.

Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.3.15.18)

manoramā hataṁ śrutvā pitaraṁ raṇamūrdhani bhayatrastātha sañjātā piturvairamanusmaran

Manorama, hearing that her father had been slain at the height of battle, became terrified with fear, remembering her father's enmity with Yudhajit.

Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.3.15.19)

haniṣyati yudhājidvai putraṁ mama durāśayaḥ rājyalobhena pāpātmā seti cintāparābhavat

"That evil-minded Yudhajit, sinful of soul, will surely kill my son out of greed for the kingdom" — with this thought, she became overwhelmed with anxiety.

Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.3.15.20)

kiṁ karomi kva gacchāmi pitā me nihato raṇe bhartā cāpi mṛto'dyaiva putro'yaṁ mama bālakaḥ

"What shall I do? Where shall I go? My father has been slain in battle; my husband too has died just this very day; and this my son is only a child.

Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.3.15.21)

"Greed is exceedingly wicked — whom has it not brought under its sway? What sin would even the best of kings not commit, once possessed by it?

Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.3.15.22)

pitaraṁ mātaraṁ bhrātṝngurūnsvajanabāndhavān hanti lobhasamāviṣṭo jano nātra vicāraṇā

"A person possessed by greed kills his own father, mother, brothers, teachers, kinsmen, and relatives — there is no doubt of this.

Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.3.15.23)

abhakṣyabhakṣaṇaṁ lobhādagamyāgamanaṁ tathā karoti kila tṛṣṇārto dharmatyāgaṁ tathā punaḥ

"Out of greed, one afflicted by craving indeed eats what should not be eaten, likewise approaches those who should not be approached, and, again, likewise abandons dharma.

Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.3.15.24)

na sahāyo'sti me kaścinnagare'tra mahābalaḥ yadādhāre sthitā cāhaṁ pālayāmi sutaṁ śubham

"I have no helper at all here in this city, of great strength, upon whose support I might rely to protect my auspicious son.

Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.3.15.25)

hate putre nṛpeṇādya kiṁ kariṣyāmyahaṁ punaḥ na me trātā'sti bhuvane yena vai susthitā hyaham

"If my son is slain by the king today, what indeed shall I do then? I have no protector in this world by whom I might be kept safe.

Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.3.15.26)

sāpi vairayutā kāmaṁ sapatnī sarvadā bhavet līlāvatī na me putre bhaviṣyati dayāvatī

"That co-wife of mine, Lilavati, filled with enmity, will surely ever remain hostile; she will not be compassionate toward my son.

Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.3.15.27)

yudhājiti samāyāte na me niḥsaraṇaṁ bhavet jñātvā bālaṁ sutaṁ so'dya kārāgāraṁ nayiṣyati

"With Yudhajit having arrived in power, there will be no escape for me; knowing my son to be a mere child, he will today take him off to prison.

Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.3.15.28)

śrūyate hi purendreṇa māturgarbhagataḥ śiśuḥ kṛntitaḥ saptadhā paścātkṛtāste sapta saptadhā

"It is heard, indeed, that long ago Indra cut into pieces, sevenfold, a child still in his mother's womb; and afterwards those seven were made sevenfold again —

Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.3.15.29)

praviśya codaraṁ mātuḥ kare kṛtvālpakaṁ pavim ekonapañcāśadapi te'bhavanmaruto divi

"— entering the mother's womb, holding a tiny thunderbolt in his hand; and those forty-nine became the forty-nine Maruts in heaven.

Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.3.15.30)

sapatnyai garalaṁ dattaṁ sapatnyā nṛpabhāryayā garbhanāśārthamuddiśya puraitadvai mayā śrutam

"Poison was once given by a co-wife, a king's wife, to her rival co-wife, with the aim of destroying her womb-child — this too I have indeed heard of old.

Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.3.15.31)

jātastu bālakaḥ paścāddehe viṣayutaḥ kila tenāsau sagaro nāma vikhyāto bhuvi maṇḍale

"Yet the child was afterward born, with poison indeed still in his body; and thus he became renowned upon the earth by the name Sagara.

Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.3.15.32)

jīvamāno'tha bhartā vai kaikeyyā nṛpabhāryayā rāmaḥ pravrājito jyeṣṭho mṛto daśaratho nṛpaḥ

"And while her husband was yet living, the elder son Rama was exiled by the king's wife Kaikeyi; and King Dasharatha died of grief.

Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.3.15.33)

mantriṇastvavaśāḥ kāmaṁ ye me putraṁ sudarśanam rājānaṁ kartukāmā vai yudhājidvaśagāśca te

"The ministers, though truly wishing to make my son Sudarshana king, are now indeed helpless, having fallen under the sway of Yudhajit.

Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.3.15.34)

na me bhrātā tathā śūro yo māṁ bandhātpramocayet mahatkaṣṭañca samprāptaṁ mayā vai daivayogataḥ

"I have no brother, nor any hero, who might free me from captivity; a great calamity has indeed befallen me, through the working of fate.

Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.3.15.35)

udyamaḥ sarvathā kāryaḥ siddhirdaivāddhi jāyate upāyaṁ putrarakṣārthaṁ karomyadya tvarānvitā

"Effort must in every way be made; success, indeed, comes about through fate. I shall today, without delay, devise a means for the protection of my son."

Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.3.15.36)

iti sañcintya sā bālā vidallaṁ cātimāninam nipuṇaṁ sarvakāryeṣu cintyaṁ mantrivarottamam

Having reflected thus, that young woman summoned Vidalla — a man of great self-respect, skillful in every task, worthy of consultation, the very best of ministers —

Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.3.15.37)

samāhūya tamekānte provāca bahuduḥkhitā gṛhītvā bālakaṁ haste rudatī dīnamānasā

— having called him aside privately, she, greatly grieved, holding her child in her arms, weeping, her mind wretched, spoke to him:

Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.3.15.38)

pitā me nihataḥ saṅkhye putro'yaṁ bālakastathā yudhājidbalavān rājā kiṁ vidheyaṁ vadasva me

"My father has been slain in battle; this my son is but a child; and King Yudhajit is powerful — what is to be done? Tell me."

Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.3.15.39)

Vidalla said to her: "We must certainly not remain here; let us instead go into the forest, indeed toward Varanasi.

Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.3.15.40)

tatra me mātulaḥ śrīmānvartate balavattaraḥ subāhuriti vikhyāto rakṣitā sa bhaviṣyati

"There dwells my prosperous, most powerful maternal uncle, renowned by the name Subahu; he will be our protector.

Verse 41 (devibhagavatam.3.15.41)

yudhājiddarśanotkaṇṭhamanasā nagarādbahiḥ nirgatya rathamāruhya gantavyaṁ nātra saṁśayaḥ

"With a mind eager, as if merely to go and see Yudhajit, we must go out of the city, mount a chariot, and depart — there is no doubt about this."

Verse 42 (devibhagavatam.3.15.42)

ityuktā tena sā rājñī gatvā līlāvatīṁ prati uvāca pitaraṁ draṣṭuṁ gacchāmyadya sulocane

Thus addressed by him, that queen went to Lilavati and said: "O fair-eyed one, I am going today to see my father."

Verse 43 (devibhagavatam.3.15.43)

ityuktvā rathamāruhya sairandhrīsaṁyutā tadā vidallena ca saṁyuktā niḥsṛtā nagarādbahiḥ

Having said this, she then mounted a chariot, accompanied by her maidservant and joined by Vidalla, and went forth out of the city.

Verse 44 (devibhagavatam.3.15.44)

trastā hyārtātikṛpaṇā pituḥ śokasamākulā dṛṣṭvā yudhājitaṁ bhūpaṁ pitaraṁ gatajīvitam

Terrified, distressed, most pitiable, overwhelmed with grief for her father, having seen King Yudhajit and her father departed from life,

Verse 45 (devibhagavatam.3.15.45)

saṁskārya ca tvarāyuktā vepamānā bhayākulā dinadvayena samprāptā rājñī bhāgīrathītaṭam

— and having, with haste, performed his funeral rites, the queen, trembling, overcome with fear, reached the bank of the Ganga within two days.

Verse 46 (devibhagavatam.3.15.46)

niṣādailuṇṭhitā tatra gṛhītaṁ sakalaṁ vasu rathañcāpi gṛhītvā te nirgatā dasyavaḥ śaṭhāḥ

There she was plundered by tribal hunters; all her wealth was seized; and those cunning bandits, having taken her chariot too, made off.

Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.3.15.47)

rudatī sutamādāya cāruvastrā manoramā niryayau jāhnavītīre sairandhrīkaralambitā

Weeping, carrying her son, Manorama, of lovely garments, went out onto the bank of the Jahnavi, leaning on the hand of her maidservant.

Verse 48 (devibhagavatam.3.15.48)

āruhya ca bhayācchīghramuḍupaṁ sā bhayākulā tīrtvā bhāgīrathīṁ puṇyāṁ yayau trikūṭaparvatam

Boarding a raft swiftly out of fear, overcome with fear, she crossed the sacred Ganga and went on to Mount Trikuta.

Verse 49 (devibhagavatam.3.15.49)

bhāradvājāśramaṁ prāptā tvarayā ca bhayākulā saṁvīkṣya tāpasāṁstatra sañjātā nirbhayā tadā

Reaching the hermitage of Bharadvaja swiftly, overcome with fear, upon beholding the ascetics there, she then became free of fear.

Verse 50 (devibhagavatam.3.15.50)

muninā sā tataḥ pṛṣṭā kā'si kasya parigrahaḥ kaṣṭenātra kathaṁ prāptā satyaṁ brūhi śucismite

She was then asked by the sage: "Who are you, and whose wife are you? How have you arrived here in such distress? Tell me the truth, O you of pure smile.

Verse 51 (devibhagavatam.3.15.51)

devī vā mānuṣī vāsi bālaputrā vane katham rājyabhraṣṭeva vāmoru bhāsi tvaṁ kamalekṣaṇe
