Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.3.14.6)

"Brahmins, kshatriyas, vaishyas, shudras, and other twice-born people, each abiding by their own respective occupations, lived righteously in that kingdom.

Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.3.14.7)

"In his kingdom, nowhere at all did thieves, slanderers, or rogues, nor indeed hypocritical, ungrateful, or foolish men, dwell.

Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.3.14.8)

evaṁ vai vartamānasya nṛpasya kurusattama dve patnyau rūpasampanne hyāsatuḥ kāmabhogade

"O best of the Kurus, while this king thus reigned, he had two wives, both endowed with beauty, granting the enjoyment of desire.

Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.3.14.9)

manoramā dharmapatnī surūpā'tivicakṣaṇā līlāvatī dvitīyā ca sā'pi rūpaguṇānvitā

"Manorama was his lawfully-wedded chief wife, of excellent form, most discerning; and Lilavati was the second, she too endowed with beauty and virtue.

Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.3.14.10)

vijahāra sapatnībhyāṁ gṛheṣūpavaneṣu ca krīḍāgirau dīrghikāsu saudheṣu vividheṣu ca

"He sported with his two wives in his palaces and gardens, on pleasure-hills, by lotus-pools, and in various palace-towers.

Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.3.14.11)

manoramā śubhe kāle suṣuve putramuttamam sudarśanābhidhaṁ putraṁ rājalakṣaṇasaṁyutam

"Manorama, at an auspicious time, gave birth to an excellent son, named Sudarshana, endowed with all the marks of royalty.

Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.3.14.12)

līlāvatyapi tatpatnī māsenaikena bhāminī suṣuve sundaraṁ putraṁ śubhe pakṣe dine tathā

"Lilavati too, that other wife, within a single month, gave birth to a beautiful son, likewise on an auspicious day in the bright fortnight.

Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.3.14.13)

cakāra nṛpatistatra jātakarmādikaṁ dvayoḥ dadau dānāni viprebhyaḥ putrajanmapramoditaḥ

"The king performed the birth-rites and the like for both sons; delighted at the birth of his sons, he gave gifts to the brahmins.

Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.3.14.14)

prītiṁ tayoḥ samāṁ rājā cakāra sutayornṛpa nṛpaścakāra sauhārdeṣvantaraṁ na kadācana

"The king showed equal affection to both his sons; the king never made any distinction between them in his affectionate regard.

Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.3.14.15)

cūḍākarma tayoścakre vidhinā nṛpasattamaḥ yathāvibhavamevāsau prītiyuktaḥ parantapaḥ

"That best of kings, the scorcher of foes, performed the tonsure ceremony for both, according to rule, filled with affection, and according to his wealth.

Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.3.14.16)

kṛtacūḍau sutau kāmaṁ jahraturnṛpatermanaḥ krīḍamānāvubhau kāntau lokānāmanurañjakau

"The two sons, their tonsure performed, greatly captivated the king's heart; both were charming, playing together, delighting the people.

Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.3.14.17)

tayoḥ sudarśano jyeṣṭho līlāvatyāḥ sutaḥ śubhaḥ śatrujitsaṁjñakaḥ kāmaṁ cāṭuvākyo babhūva ha

"Of the two, Sudarshana was the elder; and the auspicious son of Lilavati was named Shatrujit, and became, indeed, quite a flatterer of speech.

Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.3.14.18)

nṛpateḥ prītijanako mañjuvākcārudarśanaḥ prajānāṁ vallabhaḥ so'bhūttathā mantrijanasya vai

"Delighting his father the king, of sweet speech, of charming appearance, he became beloved of the subjects, and likewise of the ministers.

Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.3.14.19)

tathā tasminnṛpaḥ prītiñcakāra guṇayogataḥ mandabhāgyānmandabhāvo na tathā vai sudarśane

"Thus the king felt affection for him because of his evident qualities; and, because of his own ill fortune, the king did not feel that same affection toward Sudarshana.

Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.3.14.20)

evaṁ gacchati kāle tu dhruvasandhirnṛpottamaḥ jagāma vanamadhye'sau mṛgayābhirataḥ sadā

"Thus time passed, and King Dhruvasandhi, that excellent king, ever fond of hunting, went one day into the depths of the forest.

Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.3.14.21)

"Slaying deer, ruru-antelopes, kambu-deer, boars, wild oxen, hares, buffaloes, sharabhas, and rhinoceroses, the king sported in the forest.

Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.3.14.22)

krīḍamāne nṛpe tatra vane ghore'tidāruṇe udatiṣṭhannikuñjāttu siṁhaḥ paramakopanaḥ

"While the king was thus sporting in that terrible, most fearsome forest, a lion, exceedingly enraged, rose up from a thicket.

Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.3.14.23)

rājñā śilīmukhenādau viddhaḥ krodhavaśaṁ gataḥ dṛṣṭvāgre nṛpatiṁ siṁho nanāda meghaniḥsvanaḥ

"First pierced by the king's arrow, it fell into the sway of fury; seeing the king before it, the lion roared with a sound like thunder.

Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.3.14.24)

kṛtvā cordhvaṁ sa lāṅgūlaṁ prasāritabṛhatsaṭaḥ hantuṁ nṛpatimākāśādutpapātātikopanaḥ

"Raising its tail upward, its great mane bristling, most enraged, it leapt from the ground into the air to kill the king.

Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.3.14.25)

nṛpatistarasā vīkṣya dadhārāsiṁ kare tadā vāme carma samādāya sthitaḥ siṁha ivāparaḥ

"The king, swiftly seeing it, then grasped his sword in his hand, and, taking his shield in his left hand, stood there like a second lion.

Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.3.14.26)

sevakāstasya ye sarve te'pi bāṇānpṛthakpṛthak amuñcankupitāḥ kāmaṁ siṁhopari ruṣānvitāḥ

"All of his attendants, too, filled with anger, each let loose their arrows separately upon the lion.

Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.3.14.27)

hāhākāro mahānāsītsamprahāraśca dāruṇaḥ utpapāta tataḥ siṁho nṛpasyopari dāruṇaḥ

"A great cry of alarm arose, and a terrible battle ensued; the fearsome lion then leapt upon the king.

Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.3.14.28)

taṁ patantaṁ samālokya khaḍgenābhyahanannṛpaḥ so'pi krūrairnakhāgraiśca tatrāgatya vidāritaḥ

"Seeing it falling upon him, the king struck at it with his sword; but the lion too, coming upon him, tore him with its cruel claws.

Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.3.14.29)

sa nakhairāhato rājā papāta ca mamāra vai cukruśuḥ sainikāste tu nirjaghnurviśikhaistadā

"The king, struck by the claws, fell and died; the soldiers cried out in alarm, and then struck the lion down with their arrows.

Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.3.14.30)
