Skandha 3 · Chapter 18
Shashikala Sends a Message to Her Mother
Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.3.18.1)
vyāsa uvāca śrutvā tadvacanaṁ śyāmā premayuktā babhūva ha pratasthe brāhmaṇastasmātsthānāduktvā samāhitaḥ
Vyasa said: Hearing those words, the dark-eyed maiden became filled with love; and the Brahmin, having spoken with composure, then set out from that place.
Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.3.18.2)
sā tu pūrvānurāgādvai magnā premṇā'ticañcalā kāmabāṇahatevāsa gate tasmindvijottame
But she, already immersed in her earlier affection, became exceedingly restless with love; when that best of Brahmins had departed, she remained as though struck by Kama's arrow.
Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.3.18.3)
atha kāmārditā prāha sakhīṁ chando'nuvartinīm vikāraśca samutpanno dehe yacchravaṇādanu
Then, tormented by desire, she said to her friend, who always complied with her wishes, that a change had come upon her body ever since she had heard of him:
Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.3.18.4)
ajñātarasavijñānaṁ kumāraṁ kulasambhavam dunoti madanaḥ pāpaḥ kiṁ karomi kva yāmi ca
"For a prince, born of noble lineage, whose deep feeling is unknown to me, this wicked god of love torments me. What shall I do, where shall I go?
Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.3.18.5)
svapneṣu vā mayā dṛṣṭaḥ pañcabāṇa ivāparaḥ tapate me mano'tyarthaṁ virahākulitaṁ mṛdu
In dreams I have seen him, like another god of the five arrows; my tender heart, distressed by separation, burns exceedingly.
Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.3.18.6)
candanaṁ dehalagnaṁ me viṣavadbhāti bhāmini sragiyaṁ sarpavaccaiva candrapādāśca vahnivat
The sandal-paste on my body seems to me like poison, O lady; this garland feels like a serpent, and the moon's rays like fire.
Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.3.18.7)
na ca harmye vane śaṁ me dīrghikāyāṁ na parvate na divā na niśāyāṁ vā na sukhaṁ sukhasādhanaiḥ
I find no peace in the palace, nor in the forest, nor by the lake, nor on the hill; not by day, not by night; no happiness comes even from the means of happiness.
Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.3.18.8)
na śayyā na ca tāmbūlaṁ na gītaṁ na ca vādanam prīṇayanti mano me'dya na tṛpte mama locane
Neither the bed, nor betel, nor song, nor music delights my mind today; my eyes find no satisfaction.
Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.3.18.9)
prayāmyadya vane tatra yatrāsau vartate śaṭhaḥ bhītāsmi kulalajjāyāḥ paratantrā pitustathā
I would go today to that forest where that rogue dwells; but I fear the shame of my family, and I am dependent on my father.
Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.3.18.10)
svayaṁvaraṁ pitā me'dya na karoti karomi kim dāsyāmi rājaputrāya kāmaṁ sudarśanāya vai
My father does not now hold a svayamvara for me — what shall I do? I would gladly give myself to the prince Sudarshana.
Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.3.18.11)
santyanye pṛthivīpālāḥ śataśaḥ sambhṛtarddhayaḥ ramaṇīyā na me te'dya rājyahīno'pyasau mataḥ
There are hundreds of other kings, possessed of great wealth; but none of them is pleasing to me today — he alone, though without a kingdom, is my choice."
Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.3.18.12)
vyāsa uvāca ekākī nirdhanaścaiva balahīnaḥ sudarśanaḥ vanavāsī phalāhārastasyāścitte susaṁsthitā
Vyasa said: Sudarshana — alone, penniless, without power, dwelling in the forest, living on fruits — was firmly established in her heart, all the same.
Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.3.18.13)
vāgbījasya japātsiddhistasyā eṣāpyupasthitā sopi dhyānaparo'tyantaṁ jajāpa mantramuttamam
This attainment too had come to her through the power of the japa of that seed-syllable; and he too, deeply absorbed in meditation, continually repeated that most excellent mantra.
Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.3.18.14)
svapne paśyatyasau devīṁ viṣṇumāyāmakhaṇḍitām viśvamātaramavyaktāṁ sarvasampatkarāmbikām
In his dreams he beheld the Goddess — the undivided Vishnu-maya, the unmanifest Mother of the Universe, Ambika, giver of all prosperity.
Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.3.18.15)
śṛṅgaverapurādhyakṣo niṣādaḥ samupetya tam dadau rathavaraṁ tasmai sarvopaskarasaṁyutam
The Nishada chief, lord of Shringaverapura, coming to him, gave him an excellent chariot equipped with every accessory.
Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.3.18.16)
caturbhisturagairyuktaṁ patākāvaramaṇḍitam jaitraṁ rājasutaṁ jñātvā dadau copāyanaṁ tadā
Yoked with four horses, adorned with a splendid banner, victorious — knowing him to be a king's son, he then also gave him gifts.
Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.3.18.17)
so'pi jagrāha taṁ prītyā mitratvena susaṁsthitam vanyairmūlaphalaiḥ samyagarcayāmāsa śambaram
He too accepted it with affection, and the two were established firmly in friendship; and he duly honored Shambara with forest roots and fruits.
Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.3.18.18)
kṛtātithye gate tasminniṣādādhipatau tadā munayaḥ prītiyuktāste tamūcustāpasā mithaḥ
When the hospitality had been rendered and that Nishada chief had departed, those ascetic sages, filled with affection, spoke to him among themselves.
Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.3.18.19)
rājaputra dhruvaṁ rājyaṁ prāpsyasi tvaṁ ca sarvathā svalpairahobhiravyagraḥ pratāpānnātra saṁśayaḥ
"O prince, you shall certainly, in every way, obtain the kingdom; within a few days, undisturbed, by your own valor — there is no doubt of this.
Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.3.18.20)
The Goddess Ambika, the boon-giver who enchants the universe, is pleased with you; and you have a most capable ally. Have no worry, O one of good vows."
Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.3.18.21)
manoramāṁ tathocuste munayaḥ saṁśitavratāḥ putraste'dya dharādhīśo bhaviṣyati śucismite
Those sages, of rigorous vows, likewise said to Manorama: "Your son, O smiling one of pure heart, will now become lord of the earth."
Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.3.18.22)
sā tānuvāca tanvaṅgī vacanaṁ vo'stu satphalam dāso'yaṁ bhavatāṁ viprāḥ kiṁ citraṁ sadupāsanāt
That slender-bodied woman replied to them: "May your words bear true fruit! This boy is your servant, O Brahmins — what wonder is there, from such worthy care?
Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.3.18.23)
na sainyaṁ sacivāḥ kośo na sahāyaśca kaścana kena yogena putro me rājyaṁ prāptumihārhati
He has no army, no ministers, no ally whatsoever — by what means could my son here be worthy of obtaining a kingdom?
Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.3.18.24)
āśīrvādaiśca vo nūnaṁ putro'yaṁ me mahīpatiḥ bhaviṣyati na sandeho bhavanto mantravittamāḥ
Yet by your blessings, surely, this son of mine will become a king — there is no doubt of it, for you are most learned in mantra."
Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.3.18.25)
vyāsa uvāca rathārūḍhaḥ sa medhāvī yatra yāti sudarśanaḥ akṣauhiṇīsamāvṛtta ivābhāti sa tejasā
Vyasa said: That wise Sudarshana, mounted on his chariot, wherever he went, shone with such splendor as if surrounded by a whole army.
Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.3.18.26)
pratāpo mantrabījasya nānyaḥ kaścana bhūpate evaṁ vai japatastasya prītiyuktasya sarvathā
This was entirely the power of the mantra-seed, nothing else, O king; such indeed was the effect of his repeating it, ever filled with devotion.
Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.3.18.27)
samprāpya sadgurorbījaṁ kāmarājākhyamadbhutam japedyastu śuciḥ śāntaḥ sarvānkāmānavāpnuyāt
Whoever, having obtained from a true guru that wondrous seed-mantra called Kamaraja, repeats it, pure and tranquil, attains all his desires.
Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.3.18.28)
na tadasti pṛthivyāṁ vā divi vāpi sudurlabham prasannāyāḥ śivāyāśca yadaprāpyaṁ nṛpottama
There is nothing on this earth, or even in heaven, so difficult to obtain, O best of kings, that cannot be attained when the auspicious Goddess is pleased.
Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.3.18.29)
Those in whose hearts there is no faith in the worship of the Mother and the like are dull-witted, most unfortunate, and beset with afflictions.
Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.3.18.30)
yā mātā sarvadevānāṁ yugādau parikīrtitā ādimāteti vikhyātā nāmnā tena kurūdvaha
She who is proclaimed as the Mother of all the gods from the beginning of the age, renowned by the name "Primordial Mother," O foremost of the Kurus —
Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.3.18.31)
buddhiḥ kīrtirdhṛtirlakṣmīḥ śaktiḥ śraddhā matiḥ smṛtiḥ sarveṣāṁ prāṇināṁ sā vai pratyakṣaṁ vai vibhāsate
she indeed shines manifest in all beings as intellect, fame, fortitude, fortune, power, faith, understanding, and memory.
Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.3.18.32)
na jānanti narā ye vai mohitā māyayā kila na bhajanti kutarkajñā devīṁ viśveśvarīṁ śivām
Those men who, deluded by her own Maya, do not know her — skilled only in false reasoning — do not worship the Goddess, the auspicious ruler of the universe.
Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.3.18.33)
brahmā viṣṇustathā śambhurvāsavo varuṇo yamaḥ vāyuragniḥ kuberaśca tvaṣṭā pūṣāśvinau bhagaḥ
Brahma, Vishnu, and Shambhu, Vasava, Varuna, Yama, Vayu, Agni, Kubera, Tvashta, Pushan, the two Ashvins, and Bhaga —
Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.3.18.34)
ādityā vasavo rudrā viśvedevā marudgaṇāḥ sarve dhyāyanti tāṁ devīṁ sṛṣṭisthityantakāriṇīm
the Adityas, the Vasus, the Rudras, the Vishvedevas, the hosts of Maruts — all meditate upon that Goddess, who brings about creation, preservation and dissolution.
Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.3.18.35)
What wise man would not serve that power, the very embodiment of the Supreme Self? By Sudarshana, that auspicious Goddess, giver of all things, was known.
Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.3.18.36)
brahmaiva sā'tiduṣprāpyā vidyāvidyāsvarūpiṇī yogagamyā parā śaktirmumukṣūṇāṁ ca vallabhā
She is Brahman itself, most difficult to attain, whose very form is both knowledge and ignorance — the supreme power accessible through yoga, beloved of those who seek liberation.
Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.3.18.37)
paramātmasvarūpaṁ ko vettumarhati tāṁ vinā yā sṛṣṭiṁ trividhāṁ kṛtvā darśayatyakhilātmane
Who can be capable of knowing the form of the Supreme Self without her, who, having created the threefold creation, reveals it to the Universal Self?
Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.3.18.38)
sudarśanastu tāṁ devīṁ manasā paricintayan rājyalābhātparaṁ prāpya sukhaṁ vai kānane sthitaḥ
But Sudarshana, continually meditating on that Goddess in his mind, dwelling in the forest, attained a happiness even greater than the winning of a kingdom.
Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.3.18.39)
sāpi candrakalātyarthaṁ kāmabāṇaprapīḍitā nānopacārairaniśaṁ dadhāra duḥkhitaṁ vapuḥ
She too, Chandrakala, exceedingly afflicted by Kama's arrow, bore her sorrowful body through many remedies, unceasingly.
Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.3.18.40)
tāvattasyāḥ pitā jñātvā kanyāṁ putravarārthinīm subāhuḥ kārayāmāsa svayaṁvaramatandritaḥ
Meanwhile her father, Subahu, learning that his daughter desired an excellent husband, without delay arranged for a svayamvara.
Verse 41 (devibhagavatam.3.18.41)
svayaṁvarastu trividho vidvadbhiḥ parikīrtitaḥ rājñāṁ vivāhayogyau vai nānyeṣāṁ kathitaḥ kila
The svayamvara is declared by the learned to be of three kinds; and it is said to be fit for the marriage of kings alone, not for others.
Verse 42 (devibhagavatam.3.18.42)
icchāsvayaṁvaraścaiko dvitīyaśca paṇābhidhaḥ yathā rāmeṇa bhagnaṁ vai tryambakasya śarāsanam
One is the svayamvara of choice; the second is called the wager-svayamvara, as when Rama broke the bow of Tryambaka.
Verse 43 (devibhagavatam.3.18.43)
tṛtīyaḥ śauryaśulkaśca śūrāṇāṁ parikīrtitaḥ icchāsvayaṁvaraṁ tatra cakāra nṛpasattamaḥ
The third, declared for heroes, is the valor-price svayamvara. There, that best of kings arranged the svayamvara of choice.
Verse 44 (devibhagavatam.3.18.44)
śilpibhiḥ kāritā mañcāḥ śubhairāstaraṇairyutāḥ tataśca vividhākārāḥ suklṛptāḥ sabhyamaṇḍapāḥ
Pavilions were built by craftsmen, furnished with fine coverings; and thereafter assembly-halls of various forms were skillfully constructed.
Verse 45 (devibhagavatam.3.18.45)
evaṁ kṛte'tisambhāre vivāhārthaṁ suvistare sakhīṁ śaśikalā prāha duḥkhitā cārulocanā
When this elaborate preparation for the marriage had thus been made in great detail, sorrowful, lovely-eyed Shashikala spoke to her friend:
Verse 46 (devibhagavatam.3.18.46)
idaṁ me mātaraṁ brūhi tvamekānte vaco mama mayā vṛtaḥ patiścitte dhruvasandhisutaḥ śubhaḥ
"Tell my mother this word of mine, in private: I have already chosen in my heart, as husband, the auspicious son of Dhruvasandhi.
Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.3.18.47)
nānyaṁ varaṁ variṣyāmi tamṛte vai sudarśanam sa me bhartā nṛpasuto bhagavatyā pratiṣṭhitaḥ
I shall choose no other husband except Sudarshana; he, the king's son, has been established as my husband by the Goddess herself."
Verse 48 (devibhagavatam.3.18.48)
vyāsa uvāca ityuktā sā sakhī gatvā mātaraṁ prāha satvarā vaidarbhīṁ vijane vākyaṁ madhuraṁ mañjubhāṣiṇī
Vyasa said: Thus told, that friend, sweetly-spoken, went quickly to the mother Vaidarbhi and, in private, spoke these tender words:
Verse 49 (devibhagavatam.3.18.49)
putrī te duḥkhitā prāha sādhvī tvāṁ manmukhena yat śṛṇu tvaṁ kuru kalyāṇi taddhitaṁ tvaritā'dhunā
"Your virtuous daughter, being sorrowful, has sent word to you through my mouth; hear it, O gracious one, and act now, swiftly, for her good.
Verse 50 (devibhagavatam.3.18.50)
bhāradvājāśrame puṇye dhruvasandhisuto'sti yaḥ sa me bhartā vṛtaścitte nānyaṁ bhūpaṁ vṛṇomyaham
In Bharadvaja's sacred hermitage there is the son of Dhruvasandhi — I have already chosen him in my heart as my husband; I shall choose no other king."
Verse 51 (devibhagavatam.3.18.51)
vyāsa uvāca rājñī tadvacanaṁ śrutvā svapatau gṛhamāgate nivedayāmāsa tadā putrīvākyaṁ yathātatham
Vyasa said: The queen, hearing those words, when her husband had returned home, then reported to him her daughter's message exactly as it was.
Verse 52 (devibhagavatam.3.18.52)
tacchrutvā vacanaṁ rājā vismitaḥ prahasanmuhuḥ bhāryāmuvāca vaidarbhīṁ subāhustu ṛtaṁ vacaḥ
Hearing that word, the king, astonished, laughing repeatedly, spoke to his wife Vaidarbhi — Subahu spoke these true words:
Verse 53 (devibhagavatam.3.18.53)
subhru jānāsi bālo'sau rājyānniṣkāsito vane ekākī saha mātrā vai vasate nirjane vane
"O fair-browed one, you know that boy has been driven from his kingdom, and dwells alone in the forest, with only his mother, in a lonely wood.
Verse 54 (devibhagavatam.3.18.54)
tatkṛte nihato rājā vīraseno yudhājitā sa kathaṁ nirdhano bhartā yogyaḥ syāccārulocane
For his sake King Virasena was slain by Yudhajit — how then could this penniless one be a worthy husband, O lovely-eyed one?
Verse 55 (devibhagavatam.3.18.55)
brūhi putrīṁ tato vākyaṁ kadācidapi vipriyam āgamiṣyanti rājānaḥ sthitimantaḥ svayaṁvare
Tell your daughter this word, though it may at times be unwelcome: kings of established standing will come to the svayamvara."
