Skandha 3 · Chapter 19
The King's Reply
Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.3.19.1)
vyāsa uvāca bhartrā sā'bhihitā bālāṁ putrīṁ kṛtvāṅkasaṁsthitām uvāca vacanaṁ ślakṣṇaṁ samāśvāsya śucismitām
Vyasa said: Addressed thus by her husband, she, taking her young daughter and setting her upon her lap, spoke gentle words, consoling that pure-smiling girl.
Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.3.19.2)
kiṁ vṛthā sudati tvaṁ hi vipriyaṁ mama bhāṣase pitā te duḥkhamāpnoti vākyenānena suvrate
"Why, O fair-toothed one, do you speak in vain such unwelcome words to me? Your father suffers grief because of this speech, O virtuous one.
Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.3.19.3)
sudarśano'tidurbhāgyo rājyabhraṣṭo nirāśrayaḥ balakośavihīnaśca parityaktastu bāndhavaiḥ
Sudarshana is most unfortunate — fallen from his kingdom, without refuge, devoid of army and treasury, and abandoned by his kinsmen.
Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.3.19.4)
mātrā saha vanaṁ prāptaḥ phalamūlāśanaḥ kṛśaḥ na te yogyo varo'yaṁ vai vanavāsī ca durbhagaḥ
He has come to the forest with his mother, living on roots and fruits, emaciated — this forest-dwelling, unfortunate one is not a fitting husband for you.
Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.3.19.5)
rājaputrāḥ kṛtaprajñā rūpavantaḥ susammatāḥ tavārhāḥ putri santyanye rājacihnairalaṅkṛtāḥ
O daughter, there are other princes, learned, handsome, highly esteemed, worthy of you, adorned with royal insignia.
Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.3.19.6)
bhrātā'sya vartate kāntaḥ sa rājyaṁ kosaleṣu vai karoti rūpasampannaḥ sarvalakṣaṇasaṁyutaḥ
His own brother, handsome, endowed with beauty and every auspicious mark, now rules as king in Kosala.
Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.3.19.7)
anyacca kāraṇaṁ subhru śṛṇu yacca yathā śrutam yudhājitsatataṁ tasya vadhakāmo'sti bhūmipaḥ
And hear another reason too, O fair-browed one, as I have heard it: King Yudhajit constantly desires this one's death.
Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.3.19.8)
dauhitraḥ sthāpitastena rājye kṛtvā'tisaṅgaram vīrasenaṁ nṛpaṁ hatvā sammantrya sacivaiḥ saha
By him his own grandson was installed on the throne, after a great battle, having slain King Virasena, in counsel together with his ministers.
Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.3.19.9)
bhāradvājāśramaṁ prāptaṁ hantukāmaḥ sudarśanam muninā vāritaḥ paścājjagāma nijamandiram
Coming to Bharadvaja's hermitage, desiring to kill Sudarshana, he was stopped by the sage, and afterward went back to his own palace."
Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.3.19.10)
śaśikalovāca mātarmamepsitaḥ kāmaṁ vanastho'pi nṛpātmajaḥ śaryātivacanenaiva sukanyā ca pativratā
Shashikala said: "Mother, this prince, even though forest-dwelling, is my desired one. Just as Sukanya, devoted to her husband, at Sharyati's own word —
Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.3.19.11)
cyavanañca yathā prāpya patiśuśrūṣaṇe ratā bhartṛśuśrūṣaṇaṁ strīṇāṁ svargadaṁ mokṣadaṁ tathā
obtained Chyavana and remained devoted to serving her husband — for women, service to the husband gives heaven, and likewise gives liberation.
Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.3.19.12)
akaitavakṛtaṁ nūnaṁ sukhadaṁ bhavati striyāḥ bhagavatyā samādiṣṭaṁ svapne varamanuttamam
Surely, done without deceit, it becomes a source of happiness for a woman. This most excellent husband was appointed for me by the Goddess herself in a dream.
Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.3.19.13)
tamṛte'haṁ kathaṁ cānyaṁ saṁśrayāmi nṛpātmajam maccittabhittau likhito bhagavatyā sudarśanaḥ
How, then, could I turn to any other prince except him? Sudarshana has been inscribed by the Goddess upon the wall of my heart.
Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.3.19.14)
taṁ vihāya priyaṁ kāntaṁ kariṣye'haṁ na cāparam vyāsa uvāca pratyādiṣṭā'tha vaidarbhī tayā bahunidarśanaiḥ
Abandoning that beloved dear one, I shall not choose another." Vyasa said: Vaidarbhi, thus answered by her with many such proofs —
Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.3.19.15)
bhartāraṁ sarvamācaṣṭa putryoktaṁ vacanaṁ bhṛśam vivāhasya dinādarvāgāptaṁ śrutasamanvitam
told her husband everything, all that her daughter had firmly said, before the day of the wedding, together with all she had heard.
Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.3.19.16)
dvijaṁ śaśikalā tatra preṣayāmāsa satvaram yathā na veda me tātastathā gaccha sudarśanam
Then Shashikala quickly sent a Brahmin, saying: "Go to Sudarshana in such a way that my father does not know.
Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.3.19.17)
bhāradvājāśrame brūhi madvākyāttarasā vibho pitrā me sambhṛtaḥ kāmaṁ madarthena svayaṁvaraḥ
In Bharadvaja's hermitage, tell him swiftly, O lord, by my word: 'My father has indeed prepared a svayamvara for my sake.'
Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.3.19.18)
āgamiṣyanti rājāno balayuktā hyanekaśaḥ mayā tvaṁ vai vṛtaścitte sarvathā prītipūrvakam
'Many kings, with their armies, will come; but I have already, in my heart, chosen you alone, with complete affection.'
Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.3.19.19)
bhagavatyā samādiṣṭaḥ svapne mama suropama viṣamadmi hutāśe vā prapatāmi pradīpite
'You were appointed for me by the Goddess in a dream, O one like a god; without you I shall eat poison, or fall into a blazing fire.'
Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.3.19.20)
varaye tvadṛte nānyaṁ pitṛbhyāṁ preritā'pi vā manasā karmaṇā vācā saṁvṛtastvaṁ mayā varaḥ
'I shall choose none other but you, even if urged by my parents; by mind, by deed, and by word, you have already been chosen by me as my husband.'
Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.3.19.21)
bhagavatyāḥ prasādena śarmāvābhyāṁ bhaviṣyati āgantavyaṁ tvayātraiva daivaṁ kṛtvā paraṁ balam
'By the grace of the Goddess, happiness will come to both of us; you must come here, making destiny your supreme strength.'
Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.3.19.22)
yadadhīnaṁ jagatsarvaṁ vartate sacarācaram bhagavatyā yadādiṣṭaṁ na tanmithyā bhaviṣyati
'That on which this whole moving and unmoving world depends — whatever has been ordained by the Goddess will never prove false.'
Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.3.19.23)
yadvaśe devatāḥ sarvā vartante śaṅkarādayaḥ vaktavyo'sau tvayā brahmannekānte vai nṛpātmajaḥ
'She, under whose sway all the gods beginning with Shankara exist — O Brahmin, you must tell this to the prince in private.'
Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.3.19.24)
yathā bhavati me kāryaṁ tatkartavyaṁ tvayānagha ityuktvā dakṣiṇāṁ dattvā munirvyāpāritastayā
'Do whatever is needed so that my purpose is accomplished, O sinless one.'" Having said this, and giving him a fee, she sent the sage-Brahmin on his errand.
Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.3.19.25)
gatvā sarvaṁ nivedyāśu tatra pratyāgato dvijaḥ sudarśanastu tajjñātvā niścayaṁ gamane tadā
Going there, quickly delivering the whole message, the Brahmin returned; and Sudarshana, learning of it, then resolved to go.
Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.3.19.26)
cakāra muninā tena preritaḥ paramādarāt vyāsa uvāca gamanāyodyataṁ putraṁ tamuvāca manoramā
He made this resolve, urged also with the greatest regard by that sage. Vyasa said: Manorama spoke to her son, as he made ready to depart,
Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.3.19.27)
vepamānā'tiduḥkhārtā jātatrāsā'śrulocanā kutra gacchasi putrādya samāje bhūbhṛtāṁ kila
trembling, greatly stricken with grief, filled with fear, tears in her eyes: "Where are you going today, my son, into that assembly of kings?
Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.3.19.28)
ekākī kṛtavairaśca kiṁ vicintya svayaṁvare yudhājiddhantukāmastvāṁ sameṣyati mahīpatiḥ
Alone, and already the object of enmity — what have you considered, going to the svayamvara? King Yudhajit, desiring your death, will come there too.
Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.3.19.29)
You have no other ally; therefore do not go, my child. I have only one son, and I am utterly helpless, dependent on you, without any other refuge.
Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.3.19.30)
nārhasi tvaṁ mahābhāga nirāśāṁ kartummadya mām pitā te nihato yena so'pi tatrāgato nṛpaḥ
O fortunate one, you should not make me hopeless today; that very king by whom your father was slain — he too will be present there.
Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.3.19.31)
ekākinaṁ gataṁ tatra yudhājittvāṁ haniṣyati sudarśana uvāca bhavitavyaṁ bhavatyeva nātra kāryā vicāraṇā
Going there alone, Yudhajit will kill you." Sudarshana said: "What is destined to be will surely be; there is no need for deliberation over this.
Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.3.19.32)
ādeśācca jaganmāturgacchāmyadya svayaṁvare mā śokaṁ kuru kalyāṇi kṣatriyā'si varānane
By the command of the Mother of the Universe I go today to the svayamvara. Do not grieve, O gracious one — you are a Kshatriya woman, O lovely-faced one.
Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.3.19.33)
na bibhemi prasādena bhagavatyā nirantaram vyāsa uvāca ityuktvā rathamāruhya gantukāmaṁ sudarśanam
By the constant grace of the Goddess, I have no fear." Vyasa said: Having spoken thus, as Sudarshana mounted his chariot, ready to depart —
Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.3.19.34)
dṛṣṭvā manoramā putramāśīrbhiścānvamodayat agrataste'mbikā pātu pārvatī pātu pṛṣṭhataḥ
seeing her son, Manorama sent him off with blessings: "May Ambika protect you in front, may Parvati protect you from behind;
Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.3.19.35)
pārvatī pārśvayoḥ pātu śivā sarvatra sāmpratam vārāhī viṣame mārge durgā durgeṣu karhicit kālikā kalahe ghore pātu tvāṁ parameśvarī
may Parvati protect your two sides, may Shiva now protect you everywhere; may Varahi protect you on difficult roads, Durga in every fortress or peril; may Kalika, the supreme Goddess, protect you in fierce conflict;
Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.3.19.36)
maṇḍape tatra mātaṅgī tathā saumyā svayaṁvare bhavānī bhūpamadhye tu pātu tvāṁ bhavamocanī
may Matangi protect you in that pavilion, and the gentle one in the svayamvara; may Bhavani, liberator from worldly bondage, protect you amid the kings;
Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.3.19.37)
girijā giridurgeṣu cāmuṇḍā catvareṣu ca kāmagā kānaneṣvevaṁ rakṣatu tvāṁ sanātanī
may Girija protect you in mountain-fortresses, Chamunda at the crossroads, and thus the eternal Kamaga protect you in the forests;
Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.3.19.38)
vivāde vaiṣṇavī śaktiravatāttvāṁ raghūdvaha bhairavī caraṇe saumya śatrūṇāṁ vai samāgame
in dispute may the Vaishnavi Shakti protect you, O descendant of Raghu; may gentle Bhairavi protect your feet at the meeting of enemies;
Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.3.19.39)
sarvadā sarvadeśeṣu pātu tvāṁ bhuvaneśvarī mahāmāyā jagaddhātrī saccidānandarūpiṇī
may Bhuvaneshvari protect you always and in every land — the great Maya, sustainer of the world, whose very form is being, consciousness, and bliss."
Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.3.19.40)
vyāsa uvāca ityuktvā taṁ tadā mātā vepamānā bhayākulā uvācāhaṁ tvayā sārdhamāgamiṣyāmi sarvathā
Vyasa said: Having said this to him, the mother, trembling, overcome with fear, then said: "I shall come with you in every way.
Verse 41 (devibhagavatam.3.19.41)
nimiṣārdhaṁ vinā tvāṁ vai nāhaṁ sthātumihotsahe sahaiva naya māṁ vatsa yatra te gamane matiḥ
I cannot bear to remain here even half a moment without you; take me together with you, my child, wherever your mind is set on going."
Verse 42 (devibhagavatam.3.19.42)
ityuktvā niḥsṛtā mātā dhātreyīsaṁyutā tadā viprairdattāśiṣaḥ sarve niryayurharṣasaṁyutāḥ
Having said this, the mother then set out, accompanied by her nurse's daughter; and all, blessed by the Brahmins, departed filled with joy.
Verse 43 (devibhagavatam.3.19.43)
vārāṇasyāṁ tataḥ prāpto rathenaikena rāghavaḥ jñātaḥ subāhunā tatra pūjitaścārhaṇādibhiḥ
Then, having arrived at Varanasi in a single chariot, that descendant of Raghu was recognized there by Subahu, and honored with reception and gifts.
Verse 44 (devibhagavatam.3.19.44)

A house was given for lodging, together with food, drink, and the like; and a servant was duly appointed for his attendance.

Then kings, lords of various lands, assembled there; Yudhajit too arrived, accompanied by his grandson.
Verse 46 (devibhagavatam.3.19.46)
karūṣādhipatiścaiva tathā madreśvaro nṛpaḥ sindhurājastathā vīro yoddhā māhiṣmatīpatiḥ
The lord of Karusha, and likewise the King of Madra; the heroic King of Sindhu, and the warrior lord of Mahishmati;
Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.3.19.47)

pāñcālaḥ parvatīyaśca kāmarūpo'tivīryavān kārṇāṭaścoladeśīyo vaidarbhaśca mahābalaḥ
the king of Panchala, the mountain king, the most valiant king of Kamarupa; the king of Karnata, of Chola-land, and the mighty king of Vidarbha —
Verse 48 (devibhagavatam.3.19.48)
akṣauhiṇī triṣaṣṭiśca militā saṅkhyayā tadā veṣṭitā nagarī sā tu sainyaiḥ sarvatra saṁsthitaiḥ
sixty-three akshauhinis, in all, gathered by count; and that city was entirely encircled by armies stationed on every side.
Verse 49 (devibhagavatam.3.19.49)
ete cānye ca bahavaḥ svayaṁvaradidṛkṣayā militāstatra rājāno varavāraṇasaṁyutāḥ
These and many others, kings desiring to witness the svayamvara, gathered there, accompanied by their finest elephants.
Verse 50 (devibhagavatam.3.19.50)
anyonyaṁ nṛpaputrāsta ityūcurmilitāstadā sudarśano nṛpasuto hyāgato'sti nirākulaḥ
Those assembled princes then said to one another: "Sudarshana, the king's son, has indeed come here, undisturbed.
Verse 51 (devibhagavatam.3.19.51)
ekākī rathamāruhya mātrā saha mahāmatiḥ vivāhārthamihāyātaḥ kākutsthaḥ kiṁ nu sāmpratam
Alone, mounted on his chariot, together with his mother, that wise descendant of Kakutstha has come here for marriage — what now, indeed?
Verse 52 (devibhagavatam.3.19.52)
etān rājasutāṁstyaktvā sasainyānsāyudhānatha kimenaṁ rājaputrī sā variṣyati mahābhujam
Leaving aside all these princes with their armies and their weapons, will that princess indeed choose this mighty-armed one?"
Verse 53 (devibhagavatam.3.19.53)
yudhājidatha rājeśastānuvāca mahīpatīn ahamenaṁ haniṣyāmi kanyārthe nātra saṁśayaḥ
Then King Yudhajit said to those kings: "I shall kill him, for the sake of the maiden — there is no doubt of this."
Verse 54 (devibhagavatam.3.19.54)
keralādhipatiḥ prāha taṁ tadā nītisattamaḥ nātra yuddhaṁ prakartavyaṁ rājannicchāsvayaṁvare
The King of Kerala, most skilled in statecraft, then said to him: "No battle should be waged here, O king, at a svayamvara of choice.
Verse 55 (devibhagavatam.3.19.55)
balena haraṇaṁ nāsti nātra śulkasvayaṁvaraḥ kanyecchayā'tra varaṇaṁ vivādaḥ kīdṛśastviha
There is no taking by force here; this is not a wager-svayamvara. Here the choice is by the maiden's own wish — what dispute, then, could there be?
Verse 56 (devibhagavatam.3.19.56)
anyāyena tvayā pūrvamasau rājyātpravāsitaḥ dauhitrāyārpitaṁ rājyaṁ balavannṛpasattama
By you, unjustly, he was earlier exiled from his kingdom, and the kingdom, by force, O best of kings, was given over to your grandson.
Verse 57 (devibhagavatam.3.19.57)
kākutstho'yaṁ mahābhāga kosalādhipateḥ sutaḥ kathamenaṁ rājaputraṁ haniṣyasi nirāgasam
This descendant of Kakutstha, O fortunate one, is the son of the lord of Kosala — how could you kill this innocent prince?
Verse 58 (devibhagavatam.3.19.58)
lapsyase tatphalaṁ nūnamanayasya nṛpottama śāstāsti kaścidāyuṣmañjagato'sya jagatpatiḥ
You will surely reap the fruit of this injustice, O best of kings; there is indeed some ruler over this world, O long-lived one, a lord of the universe.
Verse 59 (devibhagavatam.3.19.59)
dharmo jayati nādharmaḥ satyaṁ jayati nānṛtam mānayaṁ kuru rājendra tyaja pāpamatiṁ kila
Dharma is victorious, not adharma; truth is victorious, not falsehood. Honor this, O lord of kings, and abandon your sinful intent.
Verse 60 (devibhagavatam.3.19.60)
dauhitrastava samprāptaḥ so'pi rūpasamanvitaḥ rājyayuktastathā śrīmānkathaṁ taṁ na variṣyati
Your grandson too, who is present here, is endowed with beauty, possessed of a kingdom, and glorious — why then would she not choose him?
Verse 61 (devibhagavatam.3.19.61)
anye rājasutāḥ kāmaṁ vartante balavattarāḥ kanyāsvayaṁvare kanyā svīkariṣyati sāmpratam
There are, indeed, other princes present, even mightier; at this maiden's svayamvara, the maiden herself will now make her own choice.
Verse 62 (devibhagavatam.3.19.62)
vṛte tathā vivādaḥ kaḥ pravadantu mahībhujaḥ parasparaṁ virodho'tra na kartavyo vijānatā
Once her choice is made, what dispute can there be? Let the kings declare their views; but mutual hostility here should not be pursued by one who understands."
