Skandha 3 · Chapter 21
The Maiden Tells Her Father of Her Wish to Marry Sudarshana
Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.3.21.1)
vyāsa uvāca subāhurapi tacchrutvā yuktamuktaṁ tayā tadā cintāviṣṭo babhūvāśu kiṁ kartavyamataḥ param
Vyasa said: Subahu too, hearing that fitting speech spoken by her, at once became filled with anxiety: "What is now to be done, beyond this?"
Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.3.21.2)
saṅgatāḥ pṛthivīpālāḥ sasainyāḥ saparigrahāḥ upaviṣṭāśca mañceṣu yoddhukāmā mahābalāḥ
"The rulers of the earth have gathered, with their armies and their retinues; mighty and eager for battle, they sit upon their thrones.
Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.3.21.3)
yadi bravīmi tānsarvānsutā nāyāti sāmpratam tathāpi kopasaṁyuktā hanyurmā duṣṭabuddhayaḥ
If I tell them all that my daughter is not coming now, even so, filled with anger, those evil-minded ones might kill me.
Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.3.21.4)
na me sainyabalaṁ tādṛṅna durgabalamadbhutam yenāhaṁ nṛpatīnsarvān pratyādeṣṭumihotsahe
I have no army so strong, nor any wondrous fortress-strength, by which I could dare to send away all these kings.
Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.3.21.5)
sudarśanastathaikākī hyasahāyo'dhanaḥ śiśuḥ kiṁ kartavyaṁ nimagno'haṁ sarvathā duḥkhasāgare
And Sudarshana too is alone, without help, without wealth, a mere child. What is to be done? I am utterly sunk in an ocean of sorrow."
Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.3.21.6)
iti cintāparo rājā jagāma nṛpasannidhau praṇamya tānuvācātha praśrayāvanato nṛpaḥ
Thinking thus, the king went before the assembled kings; bowing to them, that humble king then spoke.
Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.3.21.7)
kiṁ kartavyaṁ nṛpāḥ kāmaṁ naiti me maṇḍape sutā bahuśaḥ preryamāṇā'pi sā mātrā'pi mayā'pi ca
"What is to be done, O kings? My daughter simply will not come into the pavilion, though urged repeatedly, both by her mother and by me.
Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.3.21.8)
mūrghnā patāmi pādeṣu rājñāṁ dāso'smi sāmpratam pūjādikaṁ gṛhītvā'dya vrajantu sadanāni vaḥ
I fall at the feet of you kings with my head; I am now your servant. Accepting these gifts of honor, may you now depart for your own homes.
Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.3.21.9)
dadāmi bahuratnāni vastrāṇi ca gajān rathān gṛhītvā'dya kṛpāṁ kṛtvā vrajantu bhavanānyuta
I shall give many jewels, garments, elephants and chariots; accepting them, and showing me mercy, may you go now to your homes.
Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.3.21.10)
na vaśe me sutā bālā mriyate yadi kheditā tadā me syānmahadduḥkhaṁ tena cintāturo'smyaham
My young daughter is not under my control; if, being distressed, she should die, that would be a great sorrow to me — for this I am tormented with anxiety.
Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.3.21.11)
bhavantaḥ karuṇāvanto mahābhāgyā mahaujasaḥ kiṁ me tayā duhitrā tu mandayā durvinītayā
You are compassionate, most fortunate, of great vigor; what use to me is this daughter of mine, dull-witted and ill-mannered as she is?
Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.3.21.12)
anugrāhyo'smi vaḥ kāmaṁ dāso'hamiti sarvathā sutā suteva mantavyā bhavadbhiḥ sarvathā mama
I am, indeed, to be shown your favor; I am wholly your servant. Let my daughter be considered by you as your own daughter in every way."
Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.3.21.13)
vyāsa uvāca śrutvā subāhuvacanaṁ nocuḥ kecana bhūmipāḥ yudhājitkrodhatāmrākṣastamuvāca ruṣānvitaḥ
Vyasa said: Hearing Subahu's words, some kings said nothing; but Yudhajit, his eyes red with anger, spoke to him, filled with rage:
Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.3.21.14)
rājanmūrkho'si kiṁ brūṣe kṛtvā kārya suninditam svayaṁvaraḥ kathaṁ mohādracitaḥ saṁśaye sati
"O king, you are a fool! What are you saying, having already done a most censurable deed? Why, out of delusion, was this svayamvara arranged, when doubt already existed?
Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.3.21.15)
militā bhūbhujaḥ sarve tvayāhūtāḥ svayaṁvare kathamadya nṛpā gantuṁ yogyāste svagṛhānprati
All these kings, gathered here, were invited by you to the svayamvara — how is it now fitting that these kings should simply return to their homes?
Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.3.21.16)
avamānya nṛpānsarvāṁstvaṁ kiṁ sudarśanāya vai dātumicchasi putrīñca kimanāryamataḥ param
Insulting all these kings, do you wish to give your daughter to Sudarshana? What could be more ignoble than this?
Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.3.21.17)
vicārya puruṣeṇādau kāryaṁ vai śubhamicchatā ārabdhavyaṁ tvayā tattu kṛtaṁ rājannajānatā
A matter should first be well considered by a man who desires good outcomes, before it is begun; but you, O king, have done this without understanding.
Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.3.21.18)
etānvihāya nṛpatīnbalavāhanasaṁyutān varaṁ sudarśanaṁ kartuṁ kathamicchasi sāmpratam
Setting aside all these kings, equipped with strength and mounts, how is it that you now wish to make Sudarshana the bridegroom?
Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.3.21.19)
ahaṁ tvāṁ hanmi pāpiṣṭhaṁ tathā paścātsudarśanam dauhitrāyādya te kanyāṁ dāsyāmīti viniścayaḥ
I shall kill you, most wicked one, and then Sudarshana afterward; and today I have resolved that I shall give your daughter to my own grandson.
Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.3.21.20)
mayi tiṣṭhati ko'nyosti yaḥ kanyāṁ hartumicchati sudarśanaḥ kiyānadya nirdhano nirbalaḥ śiśuḥ
While I am here, who else is there who desires to take away this maiden? What, indeed, is Sudarshana today — a penniless, powerless child?
Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.3.21.21)
bhāradvājāśrame pūrvaṁ mukto munikṛte mayā nādyāhaṁ mocayiṣyāmi sarvathā jīvitaṁ śiśoḥ
Earlier, at Bharadvaja's hermitage, I let him go for the sake of the sage; today I shall by no means spare that child's life.
Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.3.21.22)
tasmādvicārya samyaktvaṁ putryā ca bhāryayā saha dauhitrāya priyāṁ kanyāṁ dehi me subhruvaṁ kila
Therefore, considering this rightly, together with your daughter and your wife, give me your beloved, fair-browed daughter for my grandson.
Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.3.21.23)
sambandhī bhava dattvā tvaṁ putrīmetāṁ manoramām uccāśrayaḥ prakartavyaḥ sarvadā śubhamicchatā
Become my kinsman by giving this charming daughter to my grandson; a high alliance should always be sought by one who desires good fortune.
Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.3.21.24)
sudarśanāya dattvā tvaṁ putrīṁ prāṇapriyāṁ śubhām ekākine'pyarājyāya kiṁ sukhaṁ prāptumicchasi
Giving your beloved, auspicious daughter to Sudarshana — to a lone man without a kingdom — what happiness do you hope to obtain?
Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.3.21.25)
(kulaṁ vittaṁ balaṁ rūpaṁ rājyaṁ durgaṁ suhṛjjanam dṛṣṭvā kanyā pradātavyā nānyathā sukhamṛcchati) paricintaya dharmaṁ tvaṁ rājanītiñca śāśvatīm kuru kāryaṁ yathāyogyaṁ mā kṛthā matimanyathā
Lineage, wealth, strength, beauty, kingdom, fortress, and good kinsmen — having examined these, a maiden should be given; not otherwise does happiness come. Consider well dharma and eternal statecraft, O king; do what is fitting, and do not turn your mind otherwise.
Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.3.21.26)
suhṛdasi mamātyarthaṁ hitaṁ te prabravīmyaham samānaya sutāṁ rājan maṇḍape tāṁ sakhīvṛtām
You are exceedingly my friend; I speak this for your good. Bring your daughter, O king, into the pavilion, surrounded by her companions.
Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.3.21.27)
sudarśanamṛte ceyaṁ variṣyati yadā'pyasau vigraho me tadā na syādvivāho'stu tavepsitaḥ
And if this girl, even so, should choose someone other than Sudarshana, then I shall have no quarrel; let the marriage be as you desire.
Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.3.21.28)
anye nṛpatayaḥ sarve kulīnāḥ sabalāḥ samāḥ virodhaḥ kīdṛśastvenaṁ vṛṇodyadi nṛpottama
All these other kings are of good lineage, possessed of strength, equal to one another — what dispute could there be, O best of kings, if she should choose one of them?
Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.3.21.29)
anyathā'haṁ hariṣye'dya balātkanyāmimāṁ śubhām mā virodhaṁ suduḥsādhyaṁ gaccha pārthivasattama
Otherwise, I shall this day carry off this fair maiden by force. Do not provoke a most intractable conflict — go now, O best of kings."
Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.3.21.30)
vyāsa uvāca yudhājitā samādiṣṭaḥ subāhuḥ śokasaṁyutaḥ niḥśvasanbhavanaṁ gatvā bhāryāṁ prāha śucāvṛtaḥ
Vyasa said: Thus addressed by Yudhajit, Subahu, filled with grief, sighing, went to his palace, and, overcome with sorrow, spoke to his wife:
Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.3.21.31)
putrīṁ brūhi sudharmajñe kalahe samupasthite kiṁ karttavyaṁ mayā śakyaṁ tvadvaśo'smi sulocane
"Tell our daughter, O you who know true dharma, that a quarrel has arisen; what can I do? O lovely-eyed one, I am now under your guidance."
Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.3.21.32)
vyāsa uvāca sā śrutvā pativākyaṁ tu gatvā prāha sutāntikam vatse rājātiduḥkhārtaḥ pitā te'dyāpi vartate
Vyasa said: Hearing her husband's words, she went to her daughter and said: "My child, your father is even now overwhelmed with the greatest grief.
Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.3.21.33)
tvadarthe vigrahaḥ kāmaṁ samutpanno'dya bhūbhṛtām anyaṁ varaya suśroṇi sudarśanamṛte nṛpam
For your sake, indeed, a conflict has now arisen among the kings; choose another king instead, O lovely one, other than Sudarshana.
Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.3.21.34)
yadi sudarśanaṁ vatse haṭhāttvaṁ vai variṣyasi yudhājittvāṁ ca māṁ caiva haniṣyati balānvitaḥ
If, my child, you obstinately choose Sudarshana, then Yudhajit, with his army, will kill both you and me.
Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.3.21.35)
And that king, drunk with his own strength and might, will kill Sudarshana too; and afterward, when the conflict has occurred, you will have to take a second husband.
Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.3.21.36)
tasmātsudarśanaṁ tyaktvā varayānyaṁ nṛpottamam sukhamicchasi cenmahyaṁ tubhyaṁ vā mṛgalocane iti mātrā bodhitāṁ tāṁ paścādrājāpyabodhayat
Therefore, giving up Sudarshana, choose another excellent king, if you desire happiness — for me, or for yourself, O gazelle-eyed one." Thus counseled by her mother, afterward the king too counseled her.
Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.3.21.37)
ubhayorvacanaṁ śrutvā nirbhayovāca kanyakā kanyovāca satyamuktaṁ nṛpaśreṣṭha jānāsi ca vrataṁ mama
Hearing both their words, the maiden, fearless, spoke. The maiden said: "You have spoken truly, O best of kings, and you know my vow.
Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.3.21.38)
nānyaṁ vṛṇomi bhūpāla sudarśanamṛte kvacit bibheṣi yadi rājendra nṛpebhyaḥ kila kātaraḥ
O king, I shall never choose anyone other than Sudarshana. If you fear the kings, O lord of kings, being timid indeed —
Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.3.21.39)
then give me to Sudarshana, and send us both out of the city; he will set me upon his chariot and depart from your city.
Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.3.21.40)
bhavitavyaṁ tu paścādvai bhaviṣyati na cānyathā nātra cintā tvayā kāryā bhavitavye nṛpottama
What is destined will indeed come to be afterward, and not otherwise; you need have no worry, O best of kings, about what is fated.
Verse 41 (devibhagavatam.3.21.41)
yadbhāvi tadbhavatyeva sarvathātra na saṁśayaḥ rājovāca na putri sāhasaṁ kāryaṁ matimadbhiḥ kadācana
Whatever is destined surely comes to be; there is no doubt of this at all." The king said: "My daughter, the wise should never act with rashness.
Verse 42 (devibhagavatam.3.21.42)
bahubhirna viroddhavyamiti vedavido viduḥ visrakṣyāmi kathaṁ kanyāṁ dattvā rājasutāya ca
'One should not oppose many' — thus the knowers of the Veda have taught. How could I give my daughter to a mere prince and thereby abandon all these others?
Verse 43 (devibhagavatam.3.21.43)
What might not these kings, allied together, do now? If it pleases you, my child, I shall arrange a wager-contest instead.
Verse 44 (devibhagavatam.3.21.44)
janakena yathā pūrvaṁ kṛtaḥ sītāsvayaṁvare śaivaṁ dhanuryathā tena dhṛtaṁ kṛtvā paṇaṁ tathā
As Janaka once did at Sita's svayamvara, setting Shiva's bow as the wager —
Verse 45 (devibhagavatam.3.21.45)
tathāhamapi tanvaṅgi karomyadya durāsadam vivādo yena rājñāṁ vai kṛte sati śamaṁ vrajet
so too, O slender-limbed one, I shall today set a difficult challenge, by which, once accomplished, the dispute among the kings would be resolved.
Verse 46 (devibhagavatam.3.21.46)
Whoever fulfills it shall become your husband, indeed — be it Sudarshana or any other, whoever is the mightiest.
Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.3.21.47)
pālayitvā paṇaṁ tvāṁ vai varayiṣyati sarvathā evaṁ kṛte nṛpāṇāṁ tu vivādaḥ śamito bhavet
Having fulfilled the wager, he shall certainly win you as bride. Thus done, the dispute among the kings will be settled.
Verse 48 (devibhagavatam.3.21.48)
sukhenāhaṁ vivāhaṁ te kariṣyāmi tataḥ param kanyovāca sandehe naiva majjāmi mūrkhakṛtyamidaṁ yataḥ
Then I shall happily perform your marriage, thereafter." The maiden said: "I shall not sink into doubt, for this would be a foolish act.
Verse 49 (devibhagavatam.3.21.49)
mayā sudarśanaḥ pūrvaṁ dhṛtaścetasi nānyathā kāraṇaṁ puṇyapāpānāṁ mana eva mahīpate
Sudarshana has already been fixed in my heart, and none other; O king, the mind alone is the cause of merit and sin.
Verse 50 (devibhagavatam.3.21.50)
manasā vidhṛtaṁ tyaktvā kathamanyaṁ vṛṇe pitaḥ kṛte paṇe mahārāja sarveṣāṁ vaśagā hyaham
Having abandoned the one held firmly in my mind, how could I choose another, O father? If a wager is set, O great king, I would become subject to the will of any and all.
Verse 51 (devibhagavatam.3.21.51)
ekaḥ pālayitā dvau vā bahavo vā bhavanti cet kiṁ kartavyaṁ tadā tāta vivāde samupasthite
If one, or two, or many should equally fulfill it, what is then to be done, O father, when a dispute arises over who truly succeeded?
Verse 52 (devibhagavatam.3.21.52)
saṁśayādhiṣṭhite kārye matiṁ nāhaṁ karomyataḥ mā cintāṁ kuru rājendra dehi sudarśanāya mām
I shall not commit my resolve to a matter fraught with such uncertainty. Do not worry, O lord of kings; give me to Sudarshana.
Verse 53 (devibhagavatam.3.21.53)
vivāhaṁ vidhinā kṛtvā śaṁ vidhāsyati caṇḍikā yannāmakīrtanādeva duḥkhaugho vilayaṁ vrajet
Perform the marriage according to due rite; Chandika will bring about our welfare — she, by the mere utterance of whose name a flood of sorrow is dissolved.
Verse 54 (devibhagavatam.3.21.54)
tāṁ smṛtvā paramāṁ śaktiṁ kuru kāryamatandritaḥ gatvā vada nṛpebhyastvaṁ kṛtāñjalipuṭo'dya vai
Remembering that supreme power, act without delay. Go and tell the kings today, with folded hands —
Verse 55 (devibhagavatam.3.21.55)
āgantavyañca śvaḥ sarvairiha bhūpaiḥ svayaṁvare ityuktvā tvaṁ visṛjyāśu sarvaṁ nṛpatimaṇḍalam
that all these kings should come tomorrow to the svayamvara here." Having said this, quickly send away the whole assembly of kings.
Verse 56 (devibhagavatam.3.21.56)
vivāhaṁ kuru rātrau me vedoktavidhinā nṛpa pāribarhaṁ yathāyogyaṁ dattvā tasmai visarjaya
Perform my marriage tonight, according to the rite prescribed by the Veda, O king; giving him a fitting dowry, send us forth.
