Skandha 3 · Chapter 22
The Marriage of Sudarshana and Shashikala
Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.3.22.1)
vyāsa uvāca śrutvā sutāvākyamaninditātmā nṛpāṁśca gatvā nṛpatirjagāda vrajantu kāmaṁ śivirāṇi bhūpāḥ śvo vā vivāhaṁ kila saṁvidhāsye
Vyasa said: Hearing his daughter's words, the blameless-hearted king went to the assembled kings and said: "May the kings, if they wish, go now to their camps; I shall indeed arrange the marriage tomorrow."
Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.3.22.2)
bhakṣyāṇi peyāni mayā'rpitāni gṛhṇantu sarve mayi suprasannāḥ śvo bhāvi kāryaṁ kila maṇḍape'tra sametya sarvairiha saṁvidheyam
Let all of you, being well pleased with me, accept the food and drink I have offered; tomorrow's business will indeed take place in this pavilion, to be arranged here by all of you together.
Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.3.22.3)
nāyāti putrī kila maṇḍape'dya karomi kiṁ bhūpatayo'tra kāmam prātaḥ samāśvāsya sutāṁ nayiṣye gacchantu tasmācchivirāṇi bhūpāḥ
My daughter simply does not come into the pavilion today; what shall I do, O kings, according to your wish? Tomorrow, having consoled my daughter, I shall bring her; therefore let the kings go to their camps.
Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.3.22.4)
na vigraho buddhimatāṁ nijāśrite kṛpā vidheyā satataṁ hyapatye vidhāya tāṁ prātārihānayiṣye sutāṁ tu gacchantu nṛpā yatheṣṭam
The wise do not quarrel over one who is dependent on them; compassion should always be shown toward one's own child. Having settled her, I shall bring my daughter here tomorrow — let the kings go as they wish.
Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.3.22.5)
icchāpaṇaṁ vā paricintya citte prātaḥ kariṣyāmyatha saṁvivāham sarvaiḥ sametyātra nṛpaiḥ sametaiḥ svayaṁvaraḥ sarvamatena kāryaḥ
Considering in my mind whether it shall be a choice-svayamvara or a wager, I shall perform the marriage tomorrow; the svayamvara is to be conducted here with the agreement of all the assembled kings."
Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.3.22.6)
śrutvā nṛpāste'vitathaṁ viditvā vaco yayuḥ svāni niketanāni vidhāya pārśve nagarasya rakṣāṁ cakruḥ kriyā madhyadinoditāśca
Hearing this, and knowing his word to be true, those kings went to their own dwellings; and, posting guards around the city, they performed their midday rites.
Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.3.22.7)
subāhurapyāryajanaiḥ sameta ścakāra kāryāṇi vivāhakāle putrīṁ samāhūya gṛhe sugupte purohitairvedavidāṁ variṣṭhaiḥ
Subahu too, joined by his noble kinsmen, performed the necessary rites for the time of marriage; summoning his daughter into a well-guarded chamber, together with priests, the foremost among Veda-knowers,
Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.3.22.8)
snānādikaṁ karma varasya kṛtvā vivāhabhūṣākaraṇaṁ tathaiva ānāyya vedīracite gṛhe vai tasyārhaṇāṁ bhūmipatiścakāra
having performed the bridegroom's bath and other rites, and likewise the adorning for the wedding, and bringing him into the chamber where the altar had been prepared, the king performed the ceremony of honoring him.
Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.3.22.9)
saviṣṭaraṁ cācamanīyamarghyaṁ vastradvayaṁ gāmatha kuṇḍale dve samarpya tasmai vidhivannarendra aicchatsutādānamahīnasattvaḥ
With a seat, water for sipping, the guest-offering, a pair of garments, a cow, and a pair of earrings — presenting these to him according to rite, that unwavering king, O lord of men, wished to bestow his daughter.
Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.3.22.10)
so'pyagrahītsarvamadīnacetāḥ śaśāma cintā'tha manoramāyāḥ kanyāṁ sukeśīṁ nidhikanyakāsamāṁ mene tadā''tmānamanuttamañca
He too, with an undaunted heart, accepted all this; and now Manorama's anxiety subsided. Receiving the lovely-haired maiden — like a very daughter of a hidden treasure — he then considered himself most fortunate.
Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.3.22.11)
supūjitaṁ bhūṣaṇavastradānai rvarottamaṁ taṁ sacivāstadānīm ninyuśca te kautukamaṇḍapānta rmudānvitā vītabhayāśca sarve
Then his ministers, honoring that excellent bridegroom with gifts of ornaments and garments, led him into the wedding pavilion, all of them filled with joy and free from fear.
Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.3.22.12)
samāptabhūṣāṁ vidhivadvidhijñāḥ striyaśca tāṁ rājasutāṁ suyāne āropya ninyurvarasannidhānaṇ catuṣkayukte kila maṇḍape vai
And the women, knowing the rites, having duly completed her adornment, set that princess upon a fine palanquin and brought her into the presence of the bridegroom, into the pavilion, which had four gateways.
Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.3.22.13)
agniṁ samādhāya purohitaḥ sa hutvā yathāvacca tadantarāle āhvāyayattau kṛtakautukau tu vadhūvarau premayutau nikāmam
The priest, having established the sacred fire and duly made offerings within its rites, then summoned the bride and bridegroom, both adorned with the wedding thread, filled with mutual affection.
Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.3.22.14)
lājāvisargaṁ vidhivadvidhāya kṛtvā hutāśasya pradakṣiṇāñca tau cakratustatra yathocittaṁ tat sarvaṁ vidhānaṁ kulagotrajātam
Duly performing the offering of parched grain, and circumambulating the sacred fire, the two of them performed there, in due order, all the rites proper to their lineage and gotra.
Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.3.22.15)
śatadvayaṁ cāścayujāṁ rathānāṁ subhūṣitaṁ cāpi śaraughasaṁyutam dadau nṛpendrastu sudarśanāya supūjitaṁ pāribarhaṁ vivāhe
Two hundred chariots, yoked with horses, finely adorned, and equipped with a store of arrows — the king gave to Sudarshana as a most honored dowry-gift at the wedding.
Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.3.22.16)
madotkaṭānhemavibhūṣitāṁśca gajāngireḥ śṛṅgasamānadehān śataṁ sapādaṁ nṛpasūnave'sau dadāvatha premayuto nṛpendraḥ
And, filled with affection, that king of kings gave to the prince a hundred and twenty-five elephants, in rut, adorned with gold, their bodies like the peaks of mountains.
Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.3.22.17)
dāsīśataṁ kāñcanabhūṣitaṁ ca kareṇukānāṁ ca śataṁ sucāru samarpayāmāsa varāya rājā vivāhakāle mudito'nuvelam
A hundred maidservants, adorned with gold, and a hundred lovely female elephants — the king bestowed upon the bridegroom at the time of marriage, rejoicing at every moment.
Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.3.22.18)
adātpunardāsasahasramekaṁ sarvāyudhaiḥ sambhṛtabhūṣitañca ratnāni vāsāṁsi yathocitāni divyāni citrāṇi tathāvikāni
He also gave a thousand male servants, fully equipped and adorned with every weapon; jewels and garments, fitting and divine, of varied and wondrous kinds.
Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.3.22.19)
dadau punarvāsagṛhāṇi tasmai ramyāṇi dīrghāṇi vicitritāni sindhūdbhavānāṁ turagottamānā madātsahasradvitayaṁ suramyam
He further gave him charming, spacious, richly decorated dwelling-houses; and two thousand most excellent horses, born in the Sindhu land, most delightful.
Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.3.22.20)
kramelakānāñca śatatrayaṁ vai pratyādiśadbhārabhṛtāṁ sucāru śatadvayaṁ vai śakaṭottamānāṁ tasmai dadau dhānyarasaiḥ prapūritam
He also assigned three hundred fine load-bearing camels; and two hundred excellent carts, filled to the full with grain and other provisions, he gave to him.
Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.3.22.21)
manoramāṁ rājasutāṁ praṇamya jagāda vākyaṁ vihitāñjaliḥ puraḥ dāso'smi te rājasute variṣṭhe tadbrūhi yatsyāttu manogataṁ te
Bowing before Manorama, the princess, with folded hands, he spoke this word first: "I am your servant, O most excellent princess; tell me, then, whatever is in your heart."
Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.3.22.22)
taṁ cāruvākyaṁ nijagāda sāpi svastyastu te bhūpa kulasya vṛddhiḥ sammānitā'haṁ mama sūnave tvayā dattā yato ratnavarā svakanyā
To him she too spoke a gracious word: "May you fare well, O king, and may your lineage flourish; I am honored, since you have given your own jewel-like daughter to my son."
Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.3.22.23)
na bandiputrī nṛpa māgadhī vā staumīha kiṁ tvāṁ svajanaṁ mahattaram sumerutulyastu kṛtaḥ suto'dya me sambandhinā bhūpatinottamena
I am no bard's daughter or panegyrist, O king, to praise you — what more shall I say, you being now my own most exalted kinsman? Today, by so excellent a royal in-law, my son has been made as great as Mount Sumeru.
Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.3.22.24)
aho'ticitraṁ nṛpateścaritraṁ paraṁ pavitraṁ tava kiṁ vadāmi yadbhraṣṭarājyāya sutāya me'dya dattā tvayā pūjyasutā variṣṭhā
Ah, most wondrous is the king's conduct, and utterly pure — what more shall I say of you, who have today given your most honored, most excellent daughter to my son, one fallen from his kingdom?
Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.3.22.25)
vanādhivāsāya kilādhanāya pitrā vihīnāya visainyakāya sarvānimānbhūmipatīnvihāya phalāśanāyārthavivarjitāya
to a forest-dweller, indeed to one without wealth, without a father, without an army — passing over all these other kings, given to one who lives on fruits, devoid of any means.
Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.3.22.26)
samānavitte'tha kule bale ca dadāti putrīṁ nṛpatiśca bhūyaḥ na ko'pi me bhūpasute'rthahīne guṇānvitāṁ rūpavatīñca dadyāt
A king ordinarily gives his daughter to one of equal wealth, lineage, and strength; no one at all — for my son, devoid of means — would give a virtuous and beautiful princess.
Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.3.22.27)
vairaṁ tu sarvaiḥ saha saṁvidhāya nṛpairvariṣṭhairbalasaṁyutaiśca sudarśanāyātha sutā'rpitā me kiṁ varṇaye dhairyamidaṁ tvadīyam
Yet, incurring enmity with all these most eminent and powerful kings together, you have given your daughter to my Sudarshana — how shall I describe this courage of yours?
Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.3.22.28)
niśamya vākyāni nṛpaḥ prahṛṣṭaḥ kṛtāñjalirvākyamuvāca bhūyaḥ gṛhāṇa rājyaṁ mama suprasiddhaṁ bhavāmi senāpatiradya cāham
Hearing these words, the king, delighted, with folded hands, spoke again: "Take my own well-established kingdom; I myself shall today become your commander of forces.
Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.3.22.29)
nocettadardhaṁ pratigṛhya cātra sutānvito rājyaphalāni bhuṅkṣva vihāya vārāṇasikānivāsaṁ vane pure vāsamato na me'sti
Or else, accept half of it, and here, together with my daughter, enjoy the fruits of the kingdom; giving up Varanasi as my residence, I have no further attachment now to living in city or forest.
Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.3.22.30)
nṛpāstu santyeva ruṣānvitā vai gatvā kariṣye prathamaṁ tu sāntvanam tataḥ paraṁ dvāvaparāvupāyau nocettato yuddhamahaṁ kariṣye
As for the kings who remain angry, I shall go and first attempt to conciliate them; beyond that, there are two other means; and if that fails, then I myself shall wage war.
Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.3.22.31)
jayājayo daivavaśo tathāpi dharme jayo naiva kṛte'pyadharme teṣāṁ kilādharmavatāṁ nṛpāṇāṁ kathaṁ bhaviṣyatyanucintitaṁ vai
Victory and defeat are subject to fate, and yet victory never comes to those steeped in unrighteousness, even should they act; how, indeed, could it be otherwise for those unrighteous kings, when it is thought through carefully?"
Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.3.22.32)
ākarṇya tadbhāṣitamarthavacca jagāda vākyaṁ hitakārakaṁ tam manoramā mānamavāpya tasmāt sarvātmanā modayutā prasannā
Hearing that meaningful speech, and receiving such honor from him, Manorama, wholly filled with joy and delight, spoke a beneficial word to him:
Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.3.22.33)
rājañchivaṁ te'stu kuruṣva rājyaṁ tyaktvā bhayaṁ tvaṁ svasutaiḥ sametaḥ suto'pi me nūnamavāpya rājyaṁ sāketapuryāṁ pracariṣyatīha
"O king, may you fare well; abandoning fear, rule your kingdom together with your own children; and my son too, having surely regained his kingdom, will govern here in the city of Saketa.
Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.3.22.34)
visarjayāsmānnijasadma gantuṁ śivaṁ bhavānī tava saṁvidhāsyati na kā'pi cintā mama bhūpa vartate sañcintayantyā paramāmbikāṁ vai
Send us now to go to our own home; Bhavani will bring about your welfare. I have, O king, no worry at all, for I am always contemplating the Supreme Mother."
Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.3.22.35)
doṣā gatā vividhavākyapadai rasālai ranyonyabhāṣaṇapadairamṛtopamaiśca prātarnṛpāḥ samadhigamya kṛtaṁ vivāhaṁ roṣānvitā nagarabāhyagatāstathocuḥ
The night passed thus, in sweet words spoken back and forth, in nectar-like exchanges; in the morning, when the kings learned that the marriage had already been performed, filled with rage, they gathered outside the city and spoke thus:
Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.3.22.36)
adyaiva taṁ nṛpakalaṅkadharañca hatvā bālaṁ tathaiva kila taṁ na vivāhayogyam gṛhṇīma tāṁ śaśikalāṁ nṛpateśca lakṣmīṁ lajjāmavāpya nijasadma kathaṁ vrajema
"This very day let us kill him, that disgrace upon kings, that mere boy indeed unfit for marriage; let us seize Shashikala, that fortune of the king — for how, having incurred such shame, shall we return to our own homes?"
Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.3.22.37)
śṛṇvantu tūryaninadānkila vādyamānā ñchaṅkhasvanānabhibhavanti mṛdaṅgaśabdāḥ gītadhvaniṁ ca vividhaṁ nigamasvanañca manyāmahe nṛpatinā'tra kṛto vivāhaḥ
"Listen to the sounds of trumpets being played, the blare of conches, the beats of drums that overpower them; and the varied sound of song and Vedic chant — we now understand that the marriage has indeed been performed here by the king."
Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.3.22.38)
asmānpratārya vacanairvidhivaccakāra vaivāhikena vidhinā karapīḍanaṁ vai kartavyamadya kimaho pravicintayantu bhūpāḥ parasparamatiṁ ca samarthayantu
"Deceiving us with words, he has duly performed, according to marital rites, the ceremony of joining hands. Ah, what should now be done? Let the kings deliberate, and let each state his own view to the others."
Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.3.22.39)
evaṁ vadatsu nṛpatiṣvatha kanyākāyāḥ kṛtvā vivāhavidhimapratimaprabhāvaḥ bhūpānnimantrayitumāśu jagāma rājā kāśīpatiḥ svasuhṛdaiḥ prathitaprabhāvaiḥ
While the kings were speaking thus, the King of Kashi, of matchless power, having performed the marriage rites of his daughter, went quickly to invite the kings, together with his own well-known and powerful kinsmen.
Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.3.22.40)
āgacchantaṁ ca taṁ dṛṣṭvā nṛpāḥ kāśīpatiṁ tadā nocuḥ kiñcidapi krodhānmaunamādhāya saṁsthitāḥ
Seeing the King of Kashi approaching, those kings, out of anger, said nothing at all, and remained standing there in silence.
Verse 41 (devibhagavatam.3.22.41)
sa gatvā praṇipatyāha kṛtāñjalirabhāṣata āgantavyaṁ nṛpaiḥ sarvairbhojanārthaṁ gṛhe mama
Going there, bowing, with folded hands, he said: "All you kings must please come to my house, for the meal."
Verse 42 (devibhagavatam.3.22.42)
kanyayā'sau vṛto bhūpaḥ kiṁ karomi hitāhitam bhavadbhistu śubhaḥ kāryo mahānto hi dayālavaḥ
That king was chosen by my daughter — what could I do, whether it was for good or ill? But by you, being great and compassionate, only good should now be done.
Verse 43 (devibhagavatam.3.22.43)
tanniśamya vacastasya nṛpāḥ krodhapariplutāḥ pratyūcurbhuktamasmābhiḥ svagṛhaṁ nṛpate vraja
Hearing his words, the kings, overwhelmed with anger, replied: "We have already eaten; go to your own home, O king."
Verse 44 (devibhagavatam.3.22.44)
kuru kāryāṇyaśeṣāṇi yatheṣṭaṁ sukṛtaṁ kṛtam nṛpāḥ sarve prayāntvadya svāni svāni gṛhāṇi vai
"Do all your remaining tasks as you please; what is done, well done. Let all the kings now depart, each to his own home."
Verse 45 (devibhagavatam.3.22.45)
subāhurapi tacchrutvā jagāma śaṅkito gṛham kiṁ kariṣyanti saṁvignāḥ krodhayuktā nṛpottamāḥ
Subahu too, hearing this, went home apprehensive: "What will these agitated, angry kings do?"
Verse 46 (devibhagavatam.3.22.46)
gate tasminmahīpālāścakruśca samayaṁ punaḥ ruddhvā mārgaṁ grahīṣyāmaḥ kanyāṁ hatvā sudarśanam
When he had gone, those kings made a fresh compact: "Let us block the road and, having slain Sudarshana, seize the maiden."
Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.3.22.47)
kecanocuḥ kimasmākaṁ hanta tena nṛpeṇa vai dṛṣṭvā tu kautukaṁ sarvaṁ gamiṣyāmo yathāgatam
Some said: "Alas, what is that king to us? Having merely witnessed the whole spectacle, let us go back the way we came."
Verse 48 (devibhagavatam.3.22.48)
ityuktvā te nṛpāḥ sarve mārgamākramya saṁsthitāḥ cakārottarakāryāṇi subāhuḥ svagṛhaṁ gataḥ
Having said this, all those kings stationed themselves, occupying the road; and Subahu, having returned to his own home, carried out the remaining rites.
