Skandha 3 · Chapter 26
The Worship of the Kumari
Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.3.26.1)
janamejaya uvāca navarātre tu samprāpte kiṁ kartavyaṁ dvijottama vidhānaṁ vidhivadbrūhi śaratkāle viśeṣataḥ
Janamejaya said: "O best of the twice-born, when the Navaratri arrives, what is to be done? Tell me the rite duly, especially for the autumn season."
Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.3.26.2)
kiṁ phalaṁ khalu kastatra vidhiḥ kāryo mahāmate etadvistarato brūhi kṛpayā dvijasattama
"What indeed is its fruit, and what rite should be performed there, O wise one? Tell this to me in detail, O best of Brahmins, out of kindness."
Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.3.26.3)
vyāsa uvāca śṛṇu rājanpravakṣyāmi navarātravrataṁ śubham śaratkāle viśeṣeṇa kartavyaṁ vidhipūrvakam
Vyasa said: "Listen, O king, I shall tell you of the auspicious Navaratri vow, which is to be performed especially in the autumn season, according to rite.
Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.3.26.4)
vasante ca prakartavyaṁ tathaiva premapūrvakam dvāvṛtū yamadaṁṣṭrākhyau nūnaṁ sarvajaneṣu vai
It should likewise be performed in spring too, with love; these two seasons, called the 'fangs of Yama,' are indeed perilous for all people.
Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.3.26.5)
śaradvasantanāmānau durgamau prāṇināmiha tasmādyatnādidaṁ kāryaṁ sarvatra śubhamicchatā
Autumn and spring, so named, are perilous here for living beings; therefore this rite should be performed with effort, everywhere, by one who desires good.
Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.3.26.6)
dvāveva sumahāghorāvṛtū rogakarau nṛṇām vasantaśaradāveva sarvanāśakarāvubhau
These two seasons alone, most terrible, are the cause of disease for men; spring and autumn alone, both, are the cause of universal destruction.
Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.3.26.7)
tasmāttatra prakartavyaṁ caṇḍikāpūjanaṁ budhaiḥ caitrāśvine śubhe māse bhaktipūrvaṁ narādhipa
Therefore, at that time, the worship of Chandika should be performed by the wise, O king, in the auspicious months of Chaitra and Ashvina, with devotion.
Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.3.26.8)
amāvāsyāṁ ca samprāpya sambhāraṁ kalpayecchubham haviṣyaṁ cāśanaṁ kāryamekabhuktaṁ tu taddine
Upon the arrival of the new-moon day, one should prepare the auspicious materials; one should eat sanctified food, taking a single meal on that day.
Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.3.26.9)

A pavilion should be constructed on level ground, in an auspicious place, sixteen cubits in measure, equipped with pillars and a banner.
Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.3.26.10)

gauramṛdgomayābhyāṁ ca lepanaṁ kārayettataḥ tanmadhye vedikā śubhrā kartavyā ca samā sthirā
With pale clay and cow-dung, one should then have it plastered; in its center a bright, level, and firm altar should be made.
Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.3.26.11)
caturhastā ca hastocchrā pīṭhārthaṁ sthānamuttamam toraṇāni vicitrāṇi vitānañca prakalpayet
Four cubits wide and one cubit high, an excellent platform for the pedestal; one should also arrange colorful festoons and a canopy.
Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.3.26.12)
rātrau dvijānathāmantrya devītattvaviśāradān ācāraniratāndāntānvedavedāṅgapāragān
At night, one should then invite Brahmins skilled in the truth of the Goddess, devoted to right conduct, self-controlled, and versed in the Vedas and Vedangas.
Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.3.26.13)

On the first day, a morning bath should be duly taken, in a river, a stream, a pond, a well, a tank, or else at home.
Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.3.26.14)
prātarnityaṁ puraḥ kṛtvā dvijānāṁ varaṇaṁ tataḥ arghyapādyādikaṁ sarvaṁ kartavyaṁ madhupūrvakam
Every morning, having first performed the preliminary rites, the invitation of Brahmins should follow; the guest-offerings — arghya, padya and the rest — should all be given, along with honey.
Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.3.26.15)
vastrālaṅkaraṇādīni deyāni ca svaśaktitaḥ vittaśāṭhyaṁ na kartavyaṁ vibhave sati karhicit
Garments, ornaments, and the like should be given, according to one's own means; niggardliness in wealth should never be practiced, when one has the resources.
Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.3.26.16)
vipraiḥ santoṣitaiḥ kāryaṁ sampūrṇaṁ sarvathā bhavet nava pañca trayaścaiko devyāḥ pāṭhe dvijāḥ smṛtāḥ
When the Brahmins are satisfied, the rite becomes complete in every way; nine, five, three, or even one Brahmin is prescribed for the recitation of the Devi's text.
Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.3.26.17)
varayedbrāhmaṇaṁ śāntaṁ pārāyaṇakṛte tadā svastivācanakaṁ kāryaṁ vedamantravidhānataḥ
A calm Brahmin should be chosen then for the recitation; the benediction should be performed according to the rite of Vedic mantras.
Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.3.26.18)

tithau hastānvitāyāṁ ca nandāyāṁ pūjanaṁ varam prathame divase rājan vidhivatkāmadaṁ nṛṇām
On the tithi conjoined with the Hasta nakshatra, and on a Nanda tithi, worship is excellent; O king, on the first day, performed according to rite, it fulfills the desires of men.
Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.3.26.25)
