Skandha 3 · Chapter 27
The Greatness of Worshipping the Goddess
Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.3.27.1)
vyāsa uvāca hīnāṅgīṁ varjayetkanyāṁ kuṣṭhayuktāṁ vraṇāṅkitām gandhasphuritahīnāṅgīṁ viśālakulasambhavām
Vyasa said: One should avoid a maiden with defective limbs, afflicted with leprosy, marked with wounds, whose limbs lack the natural glow of health, even if born of a great family.
Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.3.27.2)
jātyandhāṁ kekarāṁ kāṇāṁ kurūpāṁ bahuromaśām santyajedrogiṇīṁ kanyāṁ raktapuṣpādināṅkitām
One should give up a maiden who is born blind, squint-eyed, one-eyed, ill-formed, excessively hairy, diseased, or marked by menstrual discharge or the like.
Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.3.27.3)
kṣāmāṁ garbhasamudbhūtāṁ golakāṁ kanyakodbhavām varjanīyāḥ sadā caitāḥ sarvapūjādikarmasu
An emaciated one, one conceived out of wedlock, an illegitimate one, or one born of an unmarried mother — these should always be avoided in all worship and similar rites.
Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.3.27.4)
arogiṇīṁ surūpāṅgīṁ sundarīṁ vraṇavarjitām ekavaṁśasamudbhūtāṁ kanyāṁ samyakprapūjayet
One should thoroughly worship a maiden who is healthy, of well-formed limbs, beautiful, free of wounds, and born of a single, pure lineage.
Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.3.27.5)
brāhmaṇī sarvakāryeṣu jayārthe nṛpavaṁśajā lābhārthe vaiśyavaṁśotthā matā vā śūdravaṁśajā
A Brahmin girl is fit for all purposes; one born of a royal lineage, for the purpose of victory; one born of a Vaishya lineage, for the purpose of gain; or, it is held, one born of a Shudra lineage.
Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.3.27.6)
brāhmaṇairbrahmajāḥ pūjyā rājanyairbrahmavaṁśajāḥ vaiśyaistrivargajāḥ pūjyāścatasraḥ pādasambhavaiḥ
By Brahmins, girls of Brahmin birth should be worshipped; by Kshatriyas, those of Brahmin lineage; by Vaishyas, those of the three upper varnas — and all four varnas' girls by those of the fourth class.
Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.3.27.7)
kārubhiścaiva vaṁśotthā yathāyogyaṁ prapūjayet navarātravidhānena bhaktipūrvaṁ sadaiva hi
And by artisans, one of appropriate lineage should be thoroughly worshipped, always with devotion, according to the rite of Navaratri.
Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.3.27.8)
aśakto niyataṁ pūjāṁ kartuñcennavarātrake aṣṭamyāṁ ca viśeṣeṇa kartavyaṁ pūjanaṁ sadā
If one is unable to perform the regular worship throughout the Navaratri, worship should always be performed especially on the eighth day.
Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.3.27.9)
purā'ṣṭamyāṁ bhadrakālī dakṣayajñavināśinī prādurbhūtā mahāghorā yoginī koṭibhiḥ saha
Long ago, on the eighth day, Bhadrakali, the destroyer of Daksha's sacrifice, most terrible, appeared together with millions of Yoginis.
Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.3.27.10)
ato'ṣṭamyāṁ viśeṣeṇa kartavyaṁ pūjanaṁ sadā nānāvidhopahāraiśca gandhamālyānulepanaiḥ
Therefore, on the eighth day especially, worship should always be performed, with manifold offerings, fragrance, garlands, and unguents.
Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.3.27.11)
pāyasairāmiṣairhomairbrāhmaṇānāṁ ca bhojanaiḥ phalapuṣpopahāraiśca toṣayejjagadambikām
With sweet rice-pudding, meat-offerings, fire-oblations, and the feeding of Brahmins, and with offerings of fruit and flowers, one should please the Mother of the Universe.
Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.3.27.12)
upavāse hyaśaktānāṁ navarātravrate punaḥ upoṣaṇatrayaṁ proktaṁ yathoktaphaladaṁ nṛpa
For those unable to observe a complete fast in the Navaratri vow, a set of three fasts is prescribed, O king, giving the same fruit as declared.
Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.3.27.13)
saptamyāṁ ca tathā'ṣṭamyāṁ navamyāṁ bhaktibhāvataḥ trirātrakaraṇātsarvaṁ phalaṁ bhavati pūjanāt
By observing it on the seventh, likewise the eighth, and the ninth, with devout feeling — through this three-night observance, the full fruit of the worship is obtained.
Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.3.27.14)
pūjābhiścaiva homaiśca kumāripūjanaistathā sampūrṇaṁ tadvrataṁ proktaṁ viprāṇāṁ caiva bhojanaiḥ
With worship, with fire-offerings, and likewise with the worship of maidens, and with the feeding of Brahmins, that vow is declared complete.
Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.3.27.15)
vratāni yāni cānyāni dānāni vividhāni ca navarātravratasyāsya naiva tulyāni bhūtale
Whatever other vows there may be, and whatever various acts of charity, none upon this earth is equal to this Navaratri vow.
Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.3.27.16)
dhanadhānyapradaṁ nityaṁ sukhasantānavṛddhidam āyurārogyadaṁ caiva svargadaṁ mokṣadaṁ tathā
It always bestows wealth and grain, gives happiness and the increase of progeny, gives longevity and health, and likewise gives heaven and liberation.
Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.3.27.17)
vidyārthī vā dhanārthī vā putrārthī vā bhavennaraḥ tenedaṁ vidhivatkāryaṁ vrataṁ saubhāgyadaṁ śivam
Whether a man desires knowledge, or wealth, or sons, this auspicious, fortune-giving vow should be duly performed by him.
Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.3.27.18)
vidyārthī sarvavidyāṁ vai prāpnoti vratasādhanāt rājabhraṣṭo nṛpo rājyaṁ samavāpnoti sarvadā
One who desires knowledge obtains all learning through the performance of this vow; a king fallen from his kingdom always regains his kingdom.
Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.3.27.19)
Those who, indeed, did not perform this excellent vow in a former birth, become diseased, poor, and bereft of sons.
Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.3.27.20)
vandhyā ca yā bhavennārī vidhavā dhanavarjitā anumā tatra kartavyā neyaṁ kṛtavatī vratam
A woman who is barren, or widowed, or bereft of wealth — of her, this inference is to be made: she did not perform this vow in a former life.
Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.3.27.21)
navarātravrataṁ proktaṁ na kṛtaṁ yena bhūtale sa kathaṁ vibhavaṁ prāpya modate ca tathā divi
He by whom this declared Navaratri vow was not performed upon the earth — how could he obtain prosperity, and likewise rejoice in heaven?
Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.3.27.22)
raktacandanasammiśraiḥ komalairbilvapatrakaiḥ bhavānī pūjitā yena sa bhavennṛpatiḥ kṣitau
He by whom Bhavani has been worshipped with tender bilva leaves mixed with red sandal-paste, becomes a king upon this earth.
Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.3.27.23)
nārādhitā yena śivā sanātanī duḥkhārtihā siddhikarī jagadvarā duḥkhāvṛtaḥ śatruyutaśca bhūtale nūnaṁ daridro bhavatīha mānavaḥ
He by whom the eternal, auspicious one — the remover of sorrow's affliction, the bestower of accomplishment, the boon-giver of the world — has not been worshipped, that man surely becomes, here on earth, wrapped in sorrow, beset by enemies, and poor.
Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.3.27.24)
yāṁ viṣṇurindro harapadmajau tathā vahniḥ kubero varuṇo divākaraḥ dhyāyanti sarvārthasamāptinanditā stāṁ kiṁ manuṣyā na bhajanti caṇḍikām
She whom Vishnu, Indra, Hara and Brahma, likewise Agni, Kubera, Varuna, and the Sun meditate upon, delighted by the fulfillment of all their purposes — how could men not worship that Chandika?
Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.3.27.25)
svāhā svadhā nāma manuprabhāvai stṛpyanti devāḥ pitarastathaiva yajñeṣu sarveṣu mudā haranti yannāma yugmaśrutibhirmunīndrāḥ
By the power of the mantras named Svaha and Svadha, the gods and likewise the ancestors are satisfied; whose name, in all sacrifices, the greatest of sages carry with joy upon their twin ears.
Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.3.27.26)
yasyecchayā sṛjati viśvamidaṁ prajeśo nānāvatārakalanaṁ kurute hariśca nūnaṁ karoti jagataḥ kila bhasma śambhu stāṁ śarmadāṁ na bhajate nu kathaṁ manuṣyaḥ
By whose will the Lord of creatures creates this universe, and Hari assumes his manifold incarnations, and Shambhu indeed reduces the world to ashes at dissolution — how, then, could man not worship her, the giver of happiness?
Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.3.27.27)
naiko'sti sarvabhuvaneṣu tayā vihīno devo naro'tha vihagaḥ kila pannago vā gandharvarākṣasapiśācanageṣu nūnaṁ yaḥ spandituṁ bhavati śaktiyuto yatheccham
There is not a single one, in all the worlds, devoid of her — god, man, bird, or serpent indeed; nor, among Gandharvas, Rakshasas, Pishachas, or mountains, is there any who possesses the power even to stir, as he wishes, without her.
Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.3.27.28)
tāṁ na seveta kaścaṇḍīṁ sarvakāmārthadāṁ śivām vrataṁ tasyā na kaḥ kuryādvāñchannarthacatuṣṭayam
Who would not serve that Chandika, the auspicious giver of all desired ends? Who, desiring the four aims of life, would not perform her vow?
Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.3.27.29)
mahāpātakasaṁyukto navarātravrataṁ caret mucyate sarvapāpebhyo nātra kāryā vicāraṇā
Even one bound by the greatest of sins, should he perform the Navaratri vow, is freed from all sins — no doubt need be entertained on this.
Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.3.27.30)
purā kaścidvaṇigdīno dhanahīnaḥ suduḥkhitaḥ kuṭumbī cābhavatkaścit kosale nṛpasattama
Long ago, O best of kings, there lived in Kosala a certain merchant, poor, without wealth, greatly distressed, burdened with a family.
Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.3.27.31)
apatyāni bahūnyasyābhavankṣutpīḍitāni ca bhakṣyaṁ kiñcittu sāyāhne prāpustasya ca bālakāḥ
He had many children, tormented by hunger; some little food they obtained only in the evening, those children of his.
Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.3.27.32)
bhuṅkte sma kāryakartā'sau parasyātha bubhukṣitaḥ kuṭumbabharaṇaṁ tatra cakārātinirākulaḥ
Working as a laborer for another, though himself hungry, he ate; and in this way, without complaint, he supported his family.
Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.3.27.33)
sadā dharmarataḥ śāntaḥ sadācāraśca satyavāk akrodhanaśca dhṛtimānnirmadaścānasūyakaḥ
Always devoted to dharma, calm, of good conduct, truthful in speech, free from anger, steadfast, free from pride, and free from envy —
Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.3.27.34)
sampūjya devatā nityaṁ pitṝnapyatithīṁstathā bhuñjāne poṣyavarge'tha kṛtavānbhojanaṁ vaṇik
daily worshipping the gods, and also the ancestors and guests, and only when his dependents had eaten did that merchant take his own meal.
Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.3.27.35)
evaṁ gacchati kāle vai suśilo nāmato guṇaiḥ dāridryārto dvijaṁ śāntaṁ papracchātibubhukṣitaḥ
As time thus passed, that man, Sushila by name and also by qualities, tormented by poverty and extreme hunger, asked a calm Brahmin:
Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.3.27.36)
suśīla uvāca bho bhūdeva kṛpāṁ kṛtvā vadasvādya mahāmate kathaṁ dāridryanāśaḥ syāditi me niścayena vai
Sushila said: "O god upon earth, show mercy and tell me today, O wise one — how may poverty be destroyed? I ask this with true resolve.
Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.3.27.37)
dhanaiṣaṇā me naivāsti dhanī syāmiti mānada kuṭumbabharaṇārthaṁ vai pṛcchāmi tvāṁ dvijottama
I have no desire, O honorable one, to become wealthy for its own sake; I ask you, O best of Brahmins, only for the sake of supporting my family.
Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.3.27.38)
putrī sutastu me bālo bhakṣārthī rodate bhṛśam tāvanmātraṁ gṛhe nānnaṁ muṣṭimekāṁ dadāmyaham
My little son, desiring food, weeps constantly; there is not even that much food at home — I can give but a single handful.
Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.3.27.39)
visarjito yato gehādgato bālo rudanmayā ato me dahyate'tyarthaṁ kiṁ karomi dhanaṁ vinā
When I sent him away from home, the child went off weeping; because of this my heart burns exceedingly — what shall I do without wealth?
Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.3.27.40)
vivāho'sti sutāyā me nāsti vittaṁ karomi kim daśavarṣādhikāyāstu dānakālo'pi yātyalam
There is a marriage pending for my daughter, and I have no wealth — what shall I do? She is already past ten years, and the time for her giving in marriage is nearly passing.
Verse 41 (devibhagavatam.3.27.41)
tena śocāmi viprendra sarvajño'si dayānidhe tapo dānaṁ vrataṁ kiñcidbrūhi mantrajapaṁ tathā
For this I grieve, O chief of Brahmins; you are all-knowing, O treasury of compassion — tell me some austerity, charity, vow, or mantra-repetition.
Verse 42 (devibhagavatam.3.27.42)
yenāhaṁ poṣyavargasya karomi dvija poṣaṇam tāvanme syāddhanaprāptirnādhikaṁ prārthaye kila
By which I might provide sustenance for my dependents, O Brahmin; let me obtain wealth only to that extent — I ask for nothing more, indeed.
Verse 43 (devibhagavatam.3.27.43)
tvatprasādātkuṭumbaṁ me sukhitaṁ prabhavediha tatkuruṣva mahābhāga jñānena paricintya ca
By your grace, may my family here become happy — do this for me, O fortunate one, considering it well with your wisdom."
Verse 44 (devibhagavatam.3.27.44)
vyāsa uvāca iti pṛṣṭastathā tena brāhmaṇaḥ saṁśitavrataḥ uvāca paramaprītastaṁ vaiśyaṁ nṛpasattama
Vyasa said: Thus questioned by him, that Brahmin of strict vows, O best of kings, spoke to that merchant, greatly pleased:
Verse 45 (devibhagavatam.3.27.45)
vaiśyavarya kuruṣvādya navarātravrataṁ śubham pūjanaṁ bhagavatyāśca havanaṁ bhojanaṁ tathā
"O best of merchants, perform now the auspicious Navaratri vow — the worship of the Goddess, the fire-offering, and the feeding of Brahmins.
Verse 46 (devibhagavatam.3.27.46)
vedapārāyaṇaṁ śaktijapahomādikaṁ tathā kuruṣvādya yathāśakti tava kāryaṁ bhaviṣyati
The recitation of the Veda, the repetition of the mantras of the Shakti, fire-offering and the rest — do these now according to your means; your purpose will be accomplished.
Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.3.27.47)
etasmādaparaṁ kiñcidvrataṁ nāsti dharātale navarātrābhidhaṁ vaiśya pāvanaṁ sukhadaṁ tathā
There is no other vow whatsoever upon this earth, O merchant, than this called Navaratri — purifying, and likewise bestowing happiness.
Verse 48 (devibhagavatam.3.27.48)
jñānadaṁ mokṣadaṁ caiva sukhasantānavardhanam śatrunāśakaraṁ kāmaṁ navarātravrataṁ sadā
It gives knowledge and liberation alike, increases happiness and progeny, and destroys enemies — the Navaratri vow, always as desired.
Verse 49 (devibhagavatam.3.27.49)
rājyabhraṣṭena rāmeṇa sītāvirahitena ca kiṣkindhāyāṁ vrataṁ caitatkṛtaṁ duḥkhātureṇa vai
By Rama, fallen from his kingdom, and separated from Sita, tormented by sorrow, this very vow was performed in Kishkindha.
Verse 50 (devibhagavatam.3.27.50)
prataptenāpi rāmeṇa sītāvirahavahninā vidhivatpūjitā devī navarātravratena vai
Even by Rama, scorched by the fire of separation from Sita, the Goddess was duly worshipped, through this very Navaratri vow.
Verse 51 (devibhagavatam.3.27.51)
tena prāptā'tha vaidehī kṛtvā setuṁ mahārṇave hatvā mandodarīnāthaṁ kumbhakarṇaṁ mahābalam
Thereby he obtained Vaidehi, having built the bridge across the great ocean, having slain the lord of Mandodari, and the mighty Kumbhakarna.
Verse 52 (devibhagavatam.3.27.52)
meghanādaṁ sutaṁ hatvā kṛtvā bhūpaṁ bibhīṣaṇam paścādayodhyāmāgatya prāptaṁ rājyamakaṇṭakam
Having slain the son Meghanada, and having made Vibhishana king, he thereafter returned to Ayodhya and obtained a kingdom free of thorns.
Verse 53 (devibhagavatam.3.27.53)
navarātravratasyāsya prabhāveṇa viśāṁvara sukhaṁ bhūmitale prāptaṁ rāmeṇāmitatejasā
By the power of this very Navaratri vow, O lord of peoples, Rama, of boundless splendor, obtained happiness upon this earth."
Verse 54 (devibhagavatam.3.27.54)
vyāsa uvāca iti vipravacaḥ śrutvā sa vaiśyastaṁ dvijaṁ gurum kṛtvā jagrāha sanmantraṁ māyābījābhidhaṁ nṛpa
Vyasa said: O king, hearing the Brahmin's words, that merchant, making him his guru, received from him the true mantra called the Maya-bija.
Verse 55 (devibhagavatam.3.27.55)
jajāpa parayā bhaktyā navarātramatandritaḥ nānāvidhopahāraiśca pūjayāmāsa sādaram
He repeated it with the highest devotion throughout the Navaratri, without slackening; and, with manifold offerings, worshipped the Goddess with reverence.
Verse 56 (devibhagavatam.3.27.56)
