Skandha 3 · Chapter 30
The Goddess's Boon to Rama
Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.3.30.1)
vyāsa uvāca evaṁ tau saṁvidaṁ kṛtvā yāvattūṣṇīṁ babhūvatuḥ ājagāma tadā''kāśānnārado bhagavānṛṣiḥ
Vyasa said: Thus, having reached this understanding, as the two of them fell silent, the divine sage Narada then came down from the sky.
Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.3.30.2)
raṇayanmahatīṁ vīṇāṁ svaragrāmavibhūṣitām gāyanbṛhadrathaṁ sāma tadā tamupatasthivān
Sounding his great vina, adorned with the musical scales, singing the Brihadratha Sama-chant, he then approached him.
Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.3.30.3)
dṛṣṭvā taṁ rāma utthāya dadāvatha vṛṣaṁ śubham āsanaṁ cārghyapādyañca kṛtavānamitadyutiḥ
Beholding him, Rama rose up, and, of boundless splendor, gave him an auspicious seat, along with the guest-offerings of water and washing.
Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.3.30.4)
pūjāṁ paramikāṁ kṛtvā kṛtāñjalirupasthitaḥ upaviṣṭaḥ samīpe tu kṛtājño muninā hariḥ
Performing the highest worship, with folded hands he stood before him; and Hari, having received the sage's blessing, sat down near him.
Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.3.30.5)
upaviṣṭaṁ tadā rāmaṁ sānujaṁ duḥkhamānasam papraccha nāradaḥ prītyā kuśalaṁ munisattamaḥ
Then Narada, that best of sages, affectionately asked after the welfare of Rama, seated there together with his brother, his mind sorrowful.
Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.3.30.6)
kathaṁ rāghava śokārto yathā vai prākṛto naraḥ hṛtāṁ sītāṁ ca jānāmi rāvaṇena durātmanā
"Why, O Raghava, are you so grieved, like an ordinary man? I know that Sita has been abducted by the evil-souled Ravana.
Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.3.30.7)
surasadmagataścāhaṁ śrutavāñjanakātmajām paulastyena hṛtāṁ mohānmaraṇaṁ svamajānatā
I too, having gone to the abode of the gods, have heard that the daughter of Janaka was carried off by the descendant of Pulastya, deluded, unaware of his own approaching death.
Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.3.30.8)
tava janma ca kākutstha paulastyanidhanāya vai maithilīharaṇaṁ jātametadarthaṁ narādhipa
Your very birth, O descendant of Kakutstha, was indeed for the destruction of that descendant of Pulastya; and this abduction of the Maithili occurred for this very purpose, O king of men.
Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.3.30.9)
pūrvajanmani vaidehī muniputrī tapasvinī rāvaṇena vane dṛṣṭā tapasyantī śucismitā
In a former birth, Vaidehi was a sage's daughter, an ascetic, of pure smile, seen by Ravana in the forest while performing austerities.
Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.3.30.10)
prārthitā rāvaṇenāsau bhava bhāryeti rāghava tiraskṛtastayā'sau vai jagrāha kabaraṁ balāt
She was entreated by Ravana, saying, 'Become my wife,' O Raghava; scorned by her, he then forcibly seized her by her braid.
Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.3.30.11)
śaśāpa tatkṣaṇaṁ rāma rāvaṇaṁ tāpasī bhṛśam kupitā tyaktumicchantī dehaṁ saṁsparśadūṣitam
At that very instant, O Rama, that female ascetic, enraged, cursed Ravana severely, desiring to give up her body, defiled as it was by his touch.
Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.3.30.12)
durātmaṁstava nāśārthaṁ bhaviṣyāmi dharātale ayonijā varā nārī tyaktvā dehaṁ jahāvapi
'O evil-souled one, for your destruction I shall be born upon the earth, an excellent woman not born from a womb' — and, saying this, she also gave up her body.
Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.3.30.13)
seyaṁ ramāṁśasambhūtā gṛhītā tena rakṣasā vināśārthaṁ kulasyaiva vyālī sragiva sambhramāt
That same woman, born as a portion of Rama, has now been seized by that demon — for the destruction of his own lineage, like a garland mistaken, in confusion, for a serpent.
Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.3.30.14)
tava janma ca kākutstha tasya nāśāya cāmaraiḥ prārthitasya hareraṁśādajavaṁśe'pyajanmanaḥ
And your birth too, O descendant of Kakutstha, came about for his destruction, at the entreaty of the immortal gods, as a portion of Hari, the unborn one, taking birth even in the lineage of Aja.
Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.3.30.15)
kuru dhairyaṁ mahābāho tatra sā vartate'vaśā satī dharmaratā sītā tvāṁ dhyāyantī divāniśam
Have patience, O mighty-armed one; there she remains, helpless in captivity, yet chaste, devoted to dharma — Sita, meditating upon you day and night.
Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.3.30.16)
kāmadhenupayaḥ pātre kṛtvā maghavatā svayam pānārthaṁ preṣitaṁ tasyāḥ pītaṁ caivāmṛtaṁ yathā
The milk of the wish-granting cow Kamadhenu, placed by Indra himself in a vessel, was sent for her to drink — and it was drunk by her, just as if it were nectar of immortality.
Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.3.30.17)
surabhīdugdhapānātsā kṣuttuḍduḥkhavivarjitā jātā kamalapatrākṣī vartate vīkṣitā mayā
From drinking the milk of Surabhi, that lotus-petal-eyed one has become free of the suffering of hunger and thirst; I have seen her there myself.
Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.3.30.18)
upāyaṁ kathayāmyadya tasya nāśāya rāghava vrataṁ kuruṣva śraddhāvānāśvine māsi sāmpratam
I shall tell you today the means for his destruction, O Raghava; perform, with faith, the vow now, in the month of Ashvina.
Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.3.30.19)
navarātropavāsañca bhagavatyāḥ prapūjanam sarvasiddhikaraṁ rāma japahomavidhānataḥ
The nine-night fast, and the thorough worship of the Goddess — O Rama, this brings about every accomplishment, through the rite of japa and fire-offering.
Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.3.30.20)
meghyaiśca paśubhirdevyā baliṁ dattvā viśaṁsitaiḥ daśāṁśaṁ havanaṁ kṛtvā saśaktastvaṁ bhaviṣyasi
Offering the Goddess sacrifice with pure, blameless animals, and performing the fire-offering to a tenth part of the mantra count, you will become empowered.
Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.3.30.21)
viṣṇunā caritaṁ pūrvaṁ mahādevena brahmaṇā tathā maghavatā cīrṇaṁ svargamadhyasthitena vai
This was performed formerly by Vishnu, by the great god Shiva, by Brahma, and likewise practiced by Indra, while dwelling amid the heavens.
Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.3.30.22)
sukhinā rāma kartavyaṁ navarātravrataṁ śubham viśeṣeṇa ca kartavyaṁ puṁsā kaṣṭagatena vai
O Rama, the auspicious Navaratri vow should be performed even by one who is happy; and it should especially be performed by a man who has fallen into distress.
Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.3.30.23)
viśvāmitreṇa kākutstha kṛtametanna saṁśayaḥ bhṛguṇā'tha vasiṣṭhena kaśyapena tathaiva ca
By Vishvamitra, O descendant of Kakutstha, this was performed — there is no doubt; and by Bhrigu, and by Vasishtha, and likewise by Kashyapa.
Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.3.30.24)
guruṇā hṛtadāreṇa kṛtametanmahāvratam tasmāttvaṁ kuru rājendra rāvaṇasya vadhāya ca
By your own guru, when his wife was abducted, this great vow was performed; therefore, O lord of kings, perform it too, for the destruction of Ravana.
Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.3.30.25)
indreṇa vṛtranāśāya kṛtaṁ vratamanuttamam tripurasya vināśāya śivenāpi purā kṛtam
By Indra, this most excellent vow was performed for the destruction of Vritra; and it was performed by Shiva too, formerly, for the destruction of Tripura.
Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.3.30.26)
hariṇā madhunāśāya kṛtaṁ merau mahāmate vidhivatkuru kākutstha vratametadatandritaḥ
By Hari, for the destruction of the demon Madhu, it was performed on Mount Meru, O wise one; perform this vow duly, O descendant of Kakutstha, without slackening."
Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.3.30.27)
śrīrāma uvāca kā devī kiṁ prabhāvā sā kuto jātā kimāhvayā vrataṁ kiṁ vidhivadbrūhi sarvajño'si dayānidhe
Shri Rama said: "Who is this Goddess? What is her power? Whence was she born? What is her name? And what is the rite of this vow? Tell me duly, O treasury of compassion — you are all-knowing."
Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.3.30.28)
nārada uvāca śṛṇu rāma sadā nityā śaktirādyā sanātanī sarvakāmapradā devī pūjitā duḥkhanāśinī
Narada said: "Listen, O Rama — she is the ever-eternal, primal, everlasting Power, the Goddess who fulfills every desire, and who, when worshipped, destroys sorrow.
Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.3.30.29)
She is the cause of all beings, of Brahma and the rest, O foremost of the Raghus; without her power, no one at all is capable of even the slightest movement.
Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.3.30.30)
viṣṇoḥ pālanaśaktiḥ sā kartṛśaktiḥ piturmama rudrasya nāśaśaktiḥ sā tvanyāśaktiḥ parā śivā
She is Vishnu's power of preservation; she is my own father's power of creation; she is Rudra's power of destruction — in yet another form, she is the supreme, auspicious Power beyond all these.
Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.3.30.31)
yacca kiñcitkvacidvastu sadasadbhuvanatraye tasya sarvasya yā śaktistadutpattiḥ kuto bhavet
Whatever thing exists anywhere, existent or non-existent, in the three worlds, she is the power of all of that — without her, whence could its origin come?
Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.3.30.32)
na brahmā na yadā viṣṇurna rudro na divākaraḥ na cendrādyāḥ surāḥ sarve na dharā na dharādharāḥ
When there was no Brahma, no Vishnu, no Rudra, no sun, nor Indra and all the other gods, nor the earth, nor the mountains —
Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.3.30.33)
tadā sā prakṛtiḥ pūrṇā puruṣeṇa pareṇa vai saṁyutā viharatyeva yugādau nirguṇā śivā
then she, the perfect Prakriti, joined indeed with the Supreme Purusha, alone dwelt, at the beginning of the age, that auspicious one beyond all qualities.
Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.3.30.34)
sā bhūtvā saguṇā paścātkaroti bhuvanatrayam pūrvaṁ saṁsṛjya brahmādīndattvā śaktīśca sarvaśaḥ
She, then becoming endowed with qualities, afterward fashions the three worlds — first creating Brahma and the other gods, and giving them their powers in every respect.
Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.3.30.35)
tāṁ jñātvā mucyate janturjanmasaṁsārabandhanāt sā vidyā paramā jñeyā vedādyā vedakāriṇī
Knowing her, a creature is freed from the bondage of birth and worldly existence; she is to be known as the supreme knowledge, the primal one of the Vedas, the author of the Vedas.
Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.3.30.36)
asaṅkhyātāni nāmāni tasyā brahmādibhiḥ kila guṇakarmavidhānaistu kalpitāni ca kiṁ bruve
Countless names of hers have indeed been fashioned by Brahma and the others, according to her qualities and deeds — what more shall I say?
Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.3.30.37)
akārādikṣakārāntaiḥ svarairvarṇaistu yojitaiḥ asaṅkhyeyāni nāmāni bhavanti raghunandana
O descendant of Raghu, with the vowels and consonants combined, from 'a' to the final 'kṣa,' countless names of hers come into being."
Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.3.30.38)
rāma uvāca vidhiṁ me brūhi viprarṣe vratasyāsya samāsataḥ karomyadyaiva śraddhāvāñchrīdevyāḥ pūjanaṁ tathā
Rama said: "Tell me, O Brahmin sage, the rite of this vow in brief; I shall today, with full faith, perform the worship of the glorious Goddess."
Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.3.30.39)
nārada uvāca pīṭhaṁ kṛtvā same sthāne saṁsthāpya jagadambikām upavāsānnavaiva tvaṁ kuru rāma vidhānataḥ
Narada said: "Making a pedestal on level ground, installing the Mother of the Universe there, observe the nine fasts, O Rama, duly according to rite.
Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.3.30.40)
ācāryo'haṁ bhaviṣyāmi karmaṇyasminmahīpate devakāryavidhānārthamutsāhaṁ prakaromyaham
I myself shall be your officiating teacher in this rite, O king; for the accomplishment of the gods' purpose, I undertake this effort."
Verse 41 (devibhagavatam.3.30.41)
vyāsa uvāca tacchrutvā vacanaṁ satyaṁ matvā rāmaḥ pratāpavān kārayitvā śubhaṁ pīṭhaṁ sthāpayitvāmbikāṁ śivām
Vyasa said: Hearing this, and taking his word as true, the mighty Rama, having had an auspicious pedestal made, and having installed the auspicious Ambika,
Verse 42 (devibhagavatam.3.30.42)
vidhivatpūjanaṁ tasyāścakāra vratavān hariḥ samprāpte cāśvine māsi tasmingirivare tadā
performed her worship duly, that Rama observing the vow; and, when the month of Ashvina had arrived, then, upon that excellent mountain —
Verse 43 (devibhagavatam.3.30.43)
upavāsaparo rāmaḥ kṛtavānvratamuttamam homañca vidhivattatra balidānañca pūjanam
Rama, devoted to fasting, performed the most excellent vow; there he duly performed the fire-offering, the sacrifice, and the worship.
Verse 44 (devibhagavatam.3.30.44)
bhrātarau cakratuḥ premṇā vrataṁ nāradasammatam aṣṭamyāṁ madhyarātre tu devī bhagavatī hi sā
The two brothers performed with love the vow sanctioned by Narada; and, on the eighth day, at midnight, that blessed Goddess —
Verse 45 (devibhagavatam.3.30.45)
siṁhārūḍhā dadau tatra darśanaṁ pratipūjitā giriśṛṅge sthitovāca rāghavaṁ sānujaṁ girā
mounted upon her lion, duly worshipped, gave there her divine sight; standing upon the mountain peak, she spoke to Raghava, together with his brother, in her voice —
Verse 46 (devibhagavatam.3.30.46)
meghagambhīrayā cedaṁ bhaktibhāvena toṣitā devyuvāca rāma rāma mahābāho tuṣṭā'smyadma vratena te
pleased by his devout feeling, in a voice deep as thunder-clouds, spoke thus. The Goddess said: "Rama, Rama, O mighty-armed one, I am pleased today by your vow.
Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.3.30.47)
prārthayasva varaṁ kāmaṁ yatte manasi vartate nārāyaṇāṁśasambhūtastvaṁ vaṁśe mānave'naghe
Ask for whatever boon is in your mind, as you desire; you, born as a portion of Narayana, in the sinless lineage of Manu —
Verse 48 (devibhagavatam.3.30.48)
rāvaṇasya vadhāyaiva prārthitastvamarairasi purā matsyatanuṁ kṛtvā hatvā ghorañca rākṣasam
you were entreated by the immortal gods precisely for the destruction of Ravana. Formerly, assuming the form of a fish, and slaying a terrible demon —
Verse 49 (devibhagavatam.3.30.49)
tvayā vai rakṣitā vedāḥ surāṇāṁ hitamicchatā bhūtvā kacchaparūpastu dhṛtavānmandaraṁ girim
you protected the Vedas, desiring the welfare of the gods; and, becoming a tortoise, you bore up Mount Mandara.
Verse 50 (devibhagavatam.3.30.50)
akūpāraṁ pramanthānaṁ kṛtvā devānapoṣayaḥ kolarūpaṁ paraṁ kṛtvā daśanāgreṇa medinīm
Making the ocean and the churning-rod of that mountain, you nourished the gods; and assuming the supreme form of a boar, you raised the earth upon the tip of your tusk.
Verse 51 (devibhagavatam.3.30.51)
dhṛtavānasi yadrāma hiraṇyākṣaṁ jaghāna ca nārasiṁhīṁ tanuṁ kṛtvā hiraṇyakaśipuṁ purā
That earth, O Rama, you upheld, and you slew Hiranyaksha; and, assuming the form of Man-Lion, you slew Hiranyakashipu, formerly.
Verse 52 (devibhagavatam.3.30.52)
prahlādaṁ rāma rakṣitvā hatavānasi rāghava vāmanaṁ vapurāsthāya purā chalitavānbalim
Having protected Prahlada, O Rama, O Raghava, you slew him; and, assuming the body of a dwarf, formerly, you deceived Bali.
Verse 53 (devibhagavatam.3.30.53)
bhūtvendrasyānujaḥ kāmaṁ devakāryaprasādhakaḥ jamadagnisutastvaṁ me viṣṇoraṁśena saṅgataḥ
Becoming, as you wished, the younger brother of Indra, the accomplisher of the gods' purpose; you also became the son of Jamadagni, joined, by my reckoning, with a portion of Vishnu.
Verse 54 (devibhagavatam.3.30.54)
kṛtvāntaṁ kṣatriyāṇāṁ tu dānaṁ bhūmeradāddvije tathedānīṁ tu kākutstha jāto daśarathātmaja
Having brought an end to the Kshatriyas, you gave the earth as a gift to the Brahmins; and thus now, O descendant of Kakutstha, you have been born as the son of Dasharatha.
Verse 55 (devibhagavatam.3.30.55)
prārthitastu suraiḥ sarvai rāvaṇenātipīḍitaiḥ kapayaste sahāyā vai devāṁśā balavattarāḥ
You were entreated by all the gods, greatly oppressed by Ravana; those monkeys, your allies, are indeed portions of the gods, exceedingly powerful.
Verse 56 (devibhagavatam.3.30.56)
bhaviṣyanti naravyāghra macchaktisaṁyutā hyamī śeṣāṁśo'pyanujaste'yaṁ rāvaṇātmajanāśakaḥ
O tiger among men, these will be endowed with my own power; and this younger brother of yours too is a portion of Shesha, the destroyer of Ravana's son.
Verse 57 (devibhagavatam.3.30.57)
bhaviṣyati na sandehaḥ kartavyo'tra tvayā'nagha vasante sevanaṁ kāryaṁ tvayā tatrātiśraddhayā
This will surely come to pass, O sinless one — no doubt is to be entertained about it; and my worship should also be performed by you in spring, with the greatest faith.
Verse 58 (devibhagavatam.3.30.58)
hatvā'tha rāvaṇaṁ pāpaṁ kuru rājyaṁ yathāsukham ekādaśa sahasrāṇi varṣāṇi pṛthivītale
Then, having slain the sinful Ravana, rule your kingdom in happiness; for eleven thousand years upon this earth —
Verse 59 (devibhagavatam.3.30.59)
kṛtvā rājyaṁ raghuśreṣṭha gantā'si tridivaṁ punaḥ vyāsa uvāca ityuktvāntardadhe devī rāmastu prītamānasaḥ
having ruled the kingdom, O best of the Raghus, you shall go again to heaven." Vyasa said: Having said this, the Goddess disappeared; and Rama, his heart filled with joy —
Verse 60 (devibhagavatam.3.30.60)
samāpya tadvrataṁ cakre prayāṇaṁ daśamīdine vijayāpūjanaṁ kṛtvā dattvā dānānyanekaśaḥ
having completed that vow, set out on the tenth day; performing the worship of Vijaya Dashami, and giving many gifts —
Verse 61 (devibhagavatam.3.30.61)
kapipatibalayuktaḥ sānujaḥ śrīpatiśca prakaṭaparamaśaktyā preritaḥ pūrṇakāmaḥ udadhitaṭagato'sau setubandhaṁ vidhāyā pyahanadamaraśatruṁ rāvaṇaṁ gītakīrtiḥ
joined with the army of the lord of monkeys, together with his brother, that lord of Shri, impelled by that manifest supreme power, his desire fulfilled, arriving at the shore of the ocean, having built the bridge, slew Ravana, the enemy of the immortals, whose glory is now sung.
Verse 62 (devibhagavatam.3.30.62)
yaḥ śṛṇoti naro bhaktyā devyāścaritamuttamam sa bhuktvā vipulānbhogānprāpnoti paramaṁ padam
Whatever man hears with devotion this most excellent account of the Goddess's deeds, he, having enjoyed abundant pleasures, attains the supreme abode.
Verse 63 (devibhagavatam.3.30.63)
santyanyāni purāṇāni vistarāṇi bahūni ca śrīmadbhāgavatasyāsya na tulyānīti me matiḥ
There are other Puranas, many and extensive, but none, in my judgment, is equal to this glorious Bhagavata.
