Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.4.22.1)

जनमेजय उवाच । किं कृतं पातकं तेन बालकेन पितामह । यज्जातमात्रो निहतस्तथा तेन दुरात्मना ॥

janamejaya uvāca | kiṁ kṛtaṁ pātakaṁ tena bālakena pitāmaha | yajjātamātro nihatastathā tena durātmanā ||

Janamejaya said: "What sin did that infant commit, O grandfather, that it was slain the moment it was born, by that evil-souled one?"

Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.4.22.2)

नारदोऽपि मुनिश्रेष्ठो ज्ञानवान्धर्मतत्परः । कथमेवंविधं पापं कृतवान्ब्रह्मवित्तमः ॥

nārado'pi muniśreṣṭho jñānavāndharmatatparaḥ | kathamevaṁvidhaṁ pāpaṁ kṛtavānbrahmavittamaḥ ||

"And Narada too, best of sages, wise and devoted to dharma — how did that foremost knower of Brahman commit such a sin?"

Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.4.22.3)

कर्ता कारयिता पापे तुल्यपापौ स्मृतौ बुधैः । स कथं प्रेरयामास मुनिः कंसं खलं तदा ॥

kartā kārayitā pāpe tulyapāpau smṛtau budhaiḥ | sa kathaṁ prerayāmāsa muniḥ kaṁsaṁ khalaṁ tadā ||

"The doer and the instigator of a sin are remembered by the wise as equally sinful; how then did that sage incite the wicked Kamsa then?"

Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.4.22.4)

संशयोऽयं महान्मेऽत्र ब्रूहि सर्वं सविस्तरम् । येन कर्मविपाकेन बालको निधनं गतः ॥

saṁśayo'yaṁ mahānme'tra brūhi sarvaṁ savistaram | yena karmavipākena bālako nidhanaṁ gataḥ ||

"This is a great doubt for me here — tell me all in detail: by what ripening of karma did the infant meet its death?"

Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.4.22.5)

व्यास उवाच । नारदः कौतुकप्रेक्षी सर्वदा कलहप्रियः । देवकार्यार्थमागत्य सर्वमेतच्चकार ह ॥

vyāsa uvāca | nāradaḥ kautukaprekṣī sarvadā kalahapriyaḥ | devakāryārthamāgatya sarvametaccakāra ha ||

Vyasa said: "Narada, ever a lover of spectacle, always fond of conflict, having come for the sake of the gods' purpose, did all this."

Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.4.22.6)

न मिथ्याभाषणे बुद्धिर्मुनेस्तस्य कदाचन । सत्यवक्ता सुराणां स कर्तव्ये निरतः शुचिः ॥

na mithyābhāṣaṇe buddhirmunestasya kadācana | satyavaktā surāṇāṁ sa kartavye nirataḥ śuciḥ ||

"That sage's intellect never at all inclines to falsehood; he is the truthful speaker of the gods, devoted always to what is right, pure."

Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.4.22.7)

एवं षड् बालकास्तेन जाता जाता निपातिताः । षड् गर्भाः शापयोगेन सम्भूय मरणं गताः ॥

evaṁ ṣaḍ bālakāstena jātā jātā nipātitāḥ | ṣaḍ garbhāḥ śāpayogena sambhūya maraṇaṁ gatāḥ ||

"Thus, six infants, one after another as they were born, were struck down by him; six embryos, through the working of a curse, having come together, met their death."

Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.4.22.8)

शृणु राजन्प्रवक्ष्यामि तेषां शापस्य कारणम् । स्वायम्भुवेऽन्तरे पुत्रा मरीचेः षण्महाबलाः ॥

śṛṇu rājanpravakṣyāmi teṣāṁ śāpasya kāraṇam | svāyambhuve'ntare putrā marīceḥ ṣaṇmahābalāḥ ||

"Listen, O king, I shall relate the cause of their curse. In the Svayambhuva Manvantara, there were six sons of Marichi, of great strength—"

Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.4.22.9)

ऊर्णायां चैव भार्यायामासन्धर्मविचक्षणाः । ब्रह्माणं जहसुर्वीक्ष्य सुतां यभितुमुद्यतम् ॥

ūrṇāyāṁ caiva bhāryāyāmāsandharmavicakṣaṇāḥ | brahmāṇaṁ jahasurvīkṣya sutāṁ yabhitumudyatam ||

"— born of his wife Urna, all skilled in dharma; they laughed, seeing Brahma about to violate his own daughter."

Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.4.22.10)

शशाप तांस्तदा ब्रह्मा दैत्ययोनिं विशन्त्वधः । कालनेमिसुता जातास्ते षड्गर्भा विशाम्पते ॥

śaśāpa tāṁstadā brahmā daityayoniṁ viśantvadhaḥ | kālanemisutā jātāste ṣaḍgarbhā viśāmpate ||

"Brahma then cursed them: 'May you enter downward into a Daitya womb!' They became born as the sons of Kalanemi, those six embryos, O lord of men."

Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.4.22.11)

अवतारे परे ते तु हिरण्यकशिपोः सुताः । जातास्ते ज्ञानसंयुक्ताः पूर्वशापभयान्नृप ॥

avatāre pare te tu hiraṇyakaśipoḥ sutāḥ | jātāste jñānasaṁyuktāḥ pūrvaśāpabhayānnṛpa ||

"In another avatar, they became the sons of Hiranyakashipu; endowed with knowledge, O king, out of fear of the former curse—"

Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.4.22.12)

तस्मिञ्जन्मनि शान्ताश्च तपश्चक्रुः समाहिताः । तेषां प्रीतोऽभवद् ब्रह्मा षड्गर्भाणां वरान्ददौ ॥

tasmiñjanmani śāntāśca tapaścakruḥ samāhitāḥ | teṣāṁ prīto'bhavad brahmā ṣaḍgarbhāṇāṁ varāndadau ||

"— in that birth, being tranquil, they performed austerity, composed in mind. Brahma became pleased with them, and granted a boon to the six embryos."

Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.4.22.13)

ब्रह्मोवाच । शप्ता यूयं मया पूर्वं क्रोधयुक्तेन पुत्रकाः । तुष्टोऽस्मि वो महाभागा ब्रुवन्तु वाञ्छितं वरम् ॥

brahmovāca | śaptā yūyaṁ mayā pūrvaṁ krodhayuktena putrakāḥ | tuṣṭo'smi vo mahābhāgā bruvantu vāñchitaṁ varam ||

Brahma said: "O sons, you were cursed by me formerly, in anger; I am pleased with you, O most fortunate ones — declare the boon you desire."

Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.4.22.14)

व्यास उवाच । ते तु श्रुत्वा वचस्तस्य ब्रह्मणः प्रीतमानसाः । ब्रह्माणमब्रुवन्कामं सर्वे कार्यार्थतत्पराः ॥

vyāsa uvāca | te tu śrutvā vacastasya brahmaṇaḥ prītamānasāḥ | brahmāṇamabruvankāmaṁ sarve kāryārthatatparāḥ ||

Vyasa said: Hearing his words, they, pleased in mind, all, intent upon their purpose, said to Brahma—

Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.4.22.15)

गर्भा ऊचुः । पितामहाद्य तुष्टोऽसि देहि नो वाञ्छितं वरम् । अवध्या दैवतैः सर्वैर्मानवैश्च महोरगैः ॥

garbhā ūcuḥ | pitāmahādya tuṣṭo'si dehi no vāñchitaṁ varam | avadhyā daivataiḥ sarvairmānavaiśca mahoragaiḥ ||

The embryos said: "O grandfather, since you are pleased today, grant us the boon we desire: may we be unslayable by all the gods, by men, and by the great serpents—"

Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.4.22.16)

गन्धर्वसिद्धपतिभिर्वधो माभूत्पितामह । व्यास उवाच । तानुवाच ततो ब्रह्मा सर्वमेतद्भविष्यति ॥

gandharvasiddhapatibhirvadho mābhūtpitāmaha | vyāsa uvāca | tānuvāca tato brahmā sarvametadbhaviṣyati ||

"— may there be no death for us at the hands of the Gandharvas or the lords of the Siddhas, O grandfather." Vyasa said: Brahma then said to them: "All this shall be so—"

Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.4.22.17)

गच्छन्तु वो महाभागाः सत्यमेव न संशयः । दत्त्वा वरं गतो ब्रह्मा मुदितास्ते तदाभवन् ॥

gacchantu vo mahābhāgāḥ satyameva na saṁśayaḥ | dattvā varaṁ gato brahmā muditāste tadābhavan ||

"— go now, O most fortunate ones; it is indeed the truth, without doubt." Having granted the boon, Brahma departed, and they then became joyful.

Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.4.22.18)

हिरण्यकशिपुः क्रुद्धस्तानुवाच कुरूद्वह । यस्माद्विहाय मां पुत्रास्तोषितो वै पितामहः ॥

hiraṇyakaśipuḥ kruddhastānuvāca kurūdvaha | yasmādvihāya māṁ putrāstoṣito vai pitāmahaḥ ||

Hiranyakashipu, angered, said to them, O descendant of Kuru: "Since, forsaking me, my sons, the grandfather has been pleased—"

Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.4.22.19)

वरेण प्रार्थितोऽत्यर्थं बलवन्तो यतोऽभवन् । युष्माभिर्हापितः स्नेहस्ततो युष्मांस्त्यजाम्यहम् ॥

vareṇa prārthito'tyarthaṁ balavanto yato'bhavan | yuṣmābhirhāpitaḥ snehastato yuṣmāṁstyajāmyaham ||

"— and, entreating him greatly for a boon, you have become powerful — my affection for you has thereby been forfeited by you; therefore I abandon you."

Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.4.22.20)

यूयं व्रजन्तु पाताले षड्गर्भा विश्रुता भुवि । पाताले निद्रयाविष्टास्तिष्ठन्तु बहुवत्सरान् ॥

yūyaṁ vrajantu pātāle ṣaḍgarbhā viśrutā bhuvi | pātāle nidrayāviṣṭāstiṣṭhantu bahuvatsarān ||

"Go to Patala, O six embryos renowned upon the earth; remain in Patala, overcome by sleep, for many years."

Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.4.22.21)

ततस्तु देवकीगर्भे वर्षे वर्षे पुनः पुनः । पिता वः कालनेमिस्तु तत्र कंसो भविष्यति ॥

tatastu devakīgarbhe varṣe varṣe punaḥ punaḥ | pitā vaḥ kālanemistu tatra kaṁso bhaviṣyati ||

"Then, in Devaki's womb, year after year, again and again — your father Kalanemi shall there become Kamsa."

Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.4.22.22)

स एव जातमात्रान्वो वधिष्यति सुदारुणः । व्यास उवाच । एवं शप्तांस्तदा तेन गर्भे जातान्पुनः पुनः ॥

sa eva jātamātrānvo vadhiṣyati sudāruṇaḥ | vyāsa uvāca | evaṁ śaptāṁstadā tena garbhe jātānpunaḥ punaḥ ||

"He alone, most terrible, shall slay you the moment you are born." Vyasa said: Thus, having cursed them, when they were born again and again in that womb—

Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.4.22.23)

जघान देवकीपुत्रान्षड्गर्भाञ्छापनोदितः । शेषांशः सप्तमस्तत्र देवकीगर्भसंस्थितः ॥

jaghāna devakīputrānṣaḍgarbhāñchāpanoditaḥ | śeṣāṁśaḥ saptamastatra devakīgarbhasaṁsthitaḥ ||

— he, driven by the curse, slew the six sons of Devaki, those six embryos. The portion of Shesha, the seventh, established in Devaki's womb there—

Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.4.22.24)

विस्रंसितश्च गर्भोऽसौ योगेन योगमायया । नीतश्च रोहिणीगर्भे कृत्वा सङ्कर्षणं बलात् ॥

visraṁsitaśca garbho'sau yogena yogamāyayā | nītaśca rohiṇīgarbhe kṛtvā saṅkarṣaṇaṁ balāt ||

— that embryo was, through the power of Yogamaya's device, dislodged, and forcibly transferred, effecting a 'drawing forth,' into Rohini's womb.

Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.4.22.25)

पतितः पञ्चमे मासि लोकख्यातिं गतस्तदा । कंसोऽपि ज्ञातवांस्तत्र देवकीगर्भपातनम् ॥

patitaḥ pañcame māsi lokakhyātiṁ gatastadā | kaṁso'pi jñātavāṁstatra devakīgarbhapātanam ||

Having fallen in the fifth month, it thereby became known among the people. Kamsa too came to know there of the miscarriage of Devaki's embryo—

Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.4.22.26)

मुदं प्राप स दुष्टात्मा श्रुत्वा वार्तां सुखावहाम् । अष्टमे देवकीगर्भे भगवान्सात्वतां पतिः ॥

mudaṁ prāpa sa duṣṭātmā śrutvā vārtāṁ sukhāvahām | aṣṭame devakīgarbhe bhagavānsātvatāṁ patiḥ ||

— and that evil-souled one felt joy, hearing that pleasing news. Then, in the eighth pregnancy of Devaki, the Lord, master of the Satvatas—

Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.4.22.27)

उवास देवकार्यार्थं भारावतरणाय च । राजोवाच । वसुदेवः कश्यपांशः शेषांशश्च तदाभवत् ॥

uvāsa devakāryārthaṁ bhārāvataraṇāya ca | rājovāca | vasudevaḥ kaśyapāṁśaḥ śeṣāṁśaśca tadābhavat ||

— dwelt, for the sake of the gods' purpose and for the removal of the earth's burden. The king said: "Vasudeva was a portion of Kashyapa, and the portion of Shesha then—"

Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.4.22.28)

हरेरंशस्तथा प्रोक्तो भवता मुनिसत्तम । अन्ये च येंऽशा देवानां तत्र जातास्तु तान्वद ॥

hareraṁśastathā prokto bhavatā munisattama | anye ca yeṁ'śā devānāṁ tatra jātāstu tānvada ||

"— has been declared by you, O best of sages, to be a portion of Hari. Tell me too of the other portions of the gods, who were born there—"

Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.4.22.29)

भाराववतारणार्थं वै क्षितेः प्रार्थनयानघ । व्यास उवाच । सुराणामसुराणां च ये येंऽशा भुवि विश्रुताः ॥

bhārāvavatāraṇārthaṁ vai kṣiteḥ prārthanayānagha | vyāsa uvāca | surāṇāmasurāṇāṁ ca ye yeṁ'śā bhuvi viśrutāḥ ||

"— O sinless one, for the removal of the earth's burden, at the earth's entreaty." Vyasa said: "The portions of the gods and demons that became renowned upon the earth—"

Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.4.22.30)

तानहं सम्प्रवक्ष्यामि सङ्क्षेपेण शृणुष्व तान् । वसुदेवः कश्यपांशो देवकी च तथादितिः ॥

tānahaṁ sampravakṣyāmi saṅkṣepeṇa śṛṇuṣva tān | vasudevaḥ kaśyapāṁśo devakī ca tathāditiḥ ||

"— I shall relate them to you, in brief; listen to them. Vasudeva was a portion of Kashyapa, and Devaki likewise of Aditi."

Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.4.22.31)

बलदेवस्त्वनन्तांशो वर्तमानेषु तेषु च । योऽसौ धर्मसुतः श्रीमान्नारायण इति श्रुतः ॥

baladevastvanantāṁśo vartamāneṣu teṣu ca | yo'sau dharmasutaḥ śrīmānnārāyaṇa iti śrutaḥ ||

"Baladeva was a portion of Ananta; and, among those present at that time, he who was known as the glorious son of Dharma, called Narayana—"

Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.4.22.32)

तस्यांशो वासुदेवस्तु विद्यमाने मुनौ तदा । नरस्तस्यानुजो यस्तु तस्यांशोऽर्जुन एव च ॥

tasyāṁśo vāsudevastu vidyamāne munau tadā | narastasyānujo yastu tasyāṁśo'rjuna eva ca ||

"— his portion was Vasudeva himself, while that sage Narayana remained; and Nara, his younger brother — his portion was Arjuna himself."

Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.4.22.33)

युधिष्ठिरस्तु धर्मांशो वाय्वंशो भीम इत्युत । अश्विन्यंशौ ततः प्रोक्तौ माद्रीपुत्रौ महाबलौ ॥

yudhiṣṭhirastu dharmāṁśo vāyvaṁśo bhīma ityuta | aśvinyaṁśau tataḥ proktau mādrīputrau mahābalau ||

"Yudhishthira was the portion of Dharma, and Bhima, known as the portion of Vayu; then the two sons of Madri, of great strength, were declared to be the portions of the two Ashvins."

Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.4.22.34)

सूर्यांशः कर्ण आख्यातो धर्माशो विदुरः स्मृतः । द्रोणो बृहस्पतेरंशस्तत्सतस्तु शिवांशजः ॥

sūryāṁśaḥ karṇa ākhyāto dharmāśo viduraḥ smṛtaḥ | droṇo bṛhaspateraṁśastatsatastu śivāṁśajaḥ ||

"Karna was declared the portion of Surya; Vidura was remembered as the portion of Dharma; Drona was a portion of Brihaspati, and that companion of his was born of a portion of Shiva."

Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.4.22.35)

समुद्रः शन्तनुः प्रोक्तो गङ्गा भार्या मता बुधैः । देवकस्तु समाख्यातो गन्धर्वपतिरागमे ॥

samudraḥ śantanuḥ prokto gaṅgā bhāryā matā budhaiḥ | devakastu samākhyāto gandharvapatirāgame ||

"The ocean was declared reborn as Shantanu, and Ganga was known by the wise as his wife; Devaka was declared in scripture to be the lord of the Gandharvas."

Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.4.22.36)

वसुर्भीष्मो विराटस्तु मरुद्गण इति स्मृतः । अरिष्टस्य सुतो हंसो धृतराष्ट्रः प्रकीर्तितः ॥

vasurbhīṣmo virāṭastu marudgaṇa iti smṛtaḥ | ariṣṭasya suto haṁso dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ prakīrtitaḥ ||

"Bhishma was a Vasu; Virata was remembered as born of the Marut troop. The son of Arishta, Hamsa, was proclaimed as Dhritarashtra."

Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.4.22.37)

मरुद्गणः कृपः प्रोक्तः कृतवर्मा तथापरः । दुर्योधनः कलेरंशः शकुनिं विद्धि द्वापरम् ॥

marudgaṇaḥ kṛpaḥ proktaḥ kṛtavarmā tathāparaḥ | duryodhanaḥ kaleraṁśaḥ śakuniṁ viddhi dvāparam ||

"Kripa was declared born of the Marut troop, and likewise another, Kritavarma; Duryodhana was a portion of Kali — know Shakuni to be Dvapara."

Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.4.22.38)

सोमपुत्रः सुवर्चाख्यः सोमप्ररुरुदाहृतः । पावकांशो धृष्टद्युम्नः शिखण्डी राक्षसस्तथा ॥

somaputraḥ suvarcākhyaḥ somaprarurudāhṛtaḥ | pāvakāṁśo dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ śikhaṇḍī rākṣasastathā ||

"The son of Soma, named Suvarcha, was declared to be reborn as Somapraru; Dhrishtadyumna was a portion of Fire, and likewise Shikhandi, the Rakshasa."

Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.4.22.39)

सनत्कुमारस्यांशस्तु प्रद्युम्नः परिकीर्तितः । द्रुपदो वरुणस्यांशो द्रौपदी च रमांशजा ॥

sanatkumārasyāṁśastu pradyumnaḥ parikīrtitaḥ | drupado varuṇasyāṁśo draupadī ca ramāṁśajā ||

"Pradyumna was proclaimed to be a portion of Sanatkumara; Drupada was a portion of Varuna, and Draupadi was born of a portion of Rama."

Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.4.22.40)

द्रौपदीतनयाः पञ्च विश्वेदेवांशजाः स्मृताः । कुन्तिः सिद्धिर्धृतिर्माद्री मतिर्गान्धारराजजा ॥

draupadītanayāḥ pañca viśvedevāṁśajāḥ smṛtāḥ | kuntiḥ siddhirdhṛtirmādrī matirgāndhārarājajā ||

"Draupadi's five sons were remembered as born of portions of the Vishvedevas. Kunti was Siddhi; Madri was Dhriti; Gandhari, daughter of the Gandhara king, was Mati."

Verse 41 (devibhagavatam.4.22.41)

कृष्णपत्न्यस्तथा सर्वा देववाराङ्गनाः स्मृताः । राजानश्च तथा सर्वे असुराः शक्रनोदिताः ॥

kṛṣṇapatnyastathā sarvā devavārāṅganāḥ smṛtāḥ | rājānaśca tathā sarve asurāḥ śakranoditāḥ ||

"And all of Krishna's wives were remembered as celestial nymphs of the gods. And all the kings likewise were Asuras, incited by Indra."

Verse 42 (devibhagavatam.4.22.42)

हिरण्यकशिपोरंशः शिशुपाल उदाहृतः । विप्रचित्तिर्जरासन्धः शल्यः प्रह्लाद इत्यपि ॥

hiraṇyakaśiporaṁśaḥ śiśupāla udāhṛtaḥ | vipracittirjarāsandhaḥ śalyaḥ prahlāda ityapi ||

"Shishupala was declared a portion of Hiranyakashipu; Jarasandha was Vipracitti; Shalya was said to be Prahlada."

Verse 43 (devibhagavatam.4.22.43)

कालनेमिस्तथा कंसः केशी हयशिरास्तथा । अरिष्टो बलिपुत्रस्तु ककुद्मी गोकुले हतः ॥

kālanemistathā kaṁsaḥ keśī hayaśirāstathā | ariṣṭo baliputrastu kakudmī gokule hataḥ ||

"Kamsa was likewise Kalanemi; Keshi was likewise Hayashira; Arishta, the son of Bali — the humped one — was slain in Gokula."

Verse 44 (devibhagavatam.4.22.44)

अनुह्लादो धृष्टकेतुर्भगदत्तोऽथ बाष्कलः । लम्बः प्रलम्बः सञ्चातः खरोऽसौ धेनुकोऽभवत् ॥

anuhlādo dhṛṣṭaketurbhagadatto'tha bāṣkalaḥ | lambaḥ pralambaḥ sañcātaḥ kharo'sau dhenuko'bhavat ||

"Anuhrada became Dhrishtaketu; Bhagadatta then became Bashkala; Lamba, Pralamba, Sancata, and Khara — that one became Dhenuka."

Verse 45 (devibhagavatam.4.22.45)

वाराहश्च किशोरश्च दैत्यौ परमदारुणौ । मल्लौ तावेव सञ्जातौ ख्यातौ चाणूरमुष्टिकौ ॥

vārāhaśca kiśoraśca daityau paramadāruṇau | mallau tāveva sañjātau khyātau cāṇūramuṣṭikau ||

"Varaha and Kishora, two exceedingly terrible Daityas, became those very two famed wrestlers, Chanura and Mushtika."

Verse 46 (devibhagavatam.4.22.46)

दितिपुत्रस्तथारिष्टो गजः कुवलयाभिधः । बलिपुत्री बकी ख्याता बकस्तदनुजः स्मृतः ॥

ditiputrastathāriṣṭo gajaḥ kuvalayābhidhaḥ | baliputrī bakī khyātā bakastadanujaḥ smṛtaḥ ||

"The son of Diti, Arishta, became the elephant named Kuvalayapida; the daughter of Bali became known as Baki; Baka was remembered as her younger brother."

Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.4.22.47)

यमो रुद्रस्तथा कामः क्रोधश्चैव चतुर्थकः । तेषामंशैस्तु सञ्जातो द्रोणपुत्रो महाबलः ॥

yamo rudrastathā kāmaḥ krodhaścaiva caturthakaḥ | teṣāmaṁśaistu sañjāto droṇaputro mahābalaḥ ||

"Yama, Rudra, and likewise Kama, and Krodha as the fourth — from portions of these was born the mighty son of Drona."

Verse 48 (devibhagavatam.4.22.48)

अंशावतरणे पूर्वं दैतेया राक्षसास्तथा । जाताः सर्वे सुरांशास्ते क्षितिभारावतारणे ॥

aṁśāvataraṇe pūrvaṁ daiteyā rākṣasāstathā | jātāḥ sarve surāṁśāste kṣitibhārāvatāraṇe ||

"In this partial descent, the Daityas and Rakshasas of former times too, all were born as portions — along with portions of the gods, for the removal of the earth's burden."

Verse 49 (devibhagavatam.4.22.49)

एतेषां कथितं राजन्नंशावतरणं नृप । सुराणां चासुराणां च पुराणेषु प्रकीर्तितम् ॥

eteṣāṁ kathitaṁ rājannaṁśāvataraṇaṁ nṛpa | surāṇāṁ cāsurāṇāṁ ca purāṇeṣu prakīrtitam ||

"Thus, O king, has been told to you the partial descent of these — of the gods and of the demons — as proclaimed in the Puranas."

Verse 50 (devibhagavatam.4.22.50)

यदा ब्रह्मादयो देवाः प्रार्थनार्थं हरिं गताः । हरिणा च तदा दत्तौ केशौ खलु सितासितौ ॥

yadā brahmādayo devāḥ prārthanārthaṁ hariṁ gatāḥ | hariṇā ca tadā dattau keśau khalu sitāsitau ||

"When Brahma and the other gods went to Hari for their entreaty, then Hari indeed gave, there and then, two hairs — one white and one black."

Verse 51 (devibhagavatam.4.22.51)

श्यामवर्णस्ततः कृष्णः श्वेतः सङ्कर्षणस्तथा । भारावतारणार्थं तौ जातौ देवांशसम्भवौ ॥

śyāmavarṇastataḥ kṛṣṇaḥ śvetaḥ saṅkarṣaṇastathā | bhārāvatāraṇārthaṁ tau jātau devāṁśasambhavau ||

"The dark-hued one thus became Krishna, and the white one Sankarshana; the two were born of portions of the god, for the removal of the earth's burden."

Verse 52 (devibhagavatam.4.22.52)

अंशावतरणं चैतच्छृणोति भक्तिभावतः । सर्वपापविनिर्मुक्तो मोदते स्वजनैर्वृतः ॥

aṁśāvataraṇaṁ caitacchṛṇoti bhaktibhāvataḥ | sarvapāpavinirmukto modate svajanairvṛtaḥ ||

"Whoever hears this partial descent with devotion becomes freed from all sin, and rejoices, surrounded by his own kin."
