Mahisha's Plea to the Goddess
Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.5.16.1)
व्यास उवाच । तेषां तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा क्रोधयुक्तो नराधिपः । दारुकं प्राह तरसा रथमानय मेऽद्भुतम्
vyāsa uvāca | teṣāṁ tadvacanaṁ śrutvā krodhayukto narādhipaḥ | dārukaṁ prāha tarasā rathamānaya me'dbhutam
Vyasa said: Hearing their words, the lord of men, filled with rage, quickly said to Daruka, "Bring me my wondrous chariot."
Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.5.16.2)
सहस्रखरसंयुक्तं पताकाध्वजभूषितम् । आयुधैः संयुतं शुभ्रं सुचक्रं चारुकूबरम्
sahasrakharasaṁyuktaṁ patākādhvajabhūṣitam | āyudhaiḥ saṁyutaṁ śubhraṁ sucakraṁ cārukūbaram
"— arrayed with a thousand gleaming spokes, adorned with banners and flags, fitted with weapons, bright and radiant, with fine wheels and a beautiful chariot-pole."
Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.5.16.3)
सूतोऽपि रथमानीय तमुवाच त्वरान्वितः । राजन् रथोऽयमानीतो द्वारि तिष्ठति भूषितः
sūto'pi rathamānīya tamuvāca tvarānvitaḥ | rājan ratho'yamānīto dvāri tiṣṭhati bhūṣitaḥ
The charioteer too, having brought the chariot, said to him hastily: "O king, this chariot has been brought; it stands adorned at the gate."
Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.5.16.4)
सर्वायुधसमायुक्तो वरास्तरणसंयुतः । आनीतं तं रथं ज्ञात्वा दानवेन्द्रो महाबलः
sarvāyudhasamāyukto varāstaraṇasaṁyutaḥ | ānītaṁ taṁ rathaṁ jñātvā dānavendro mahābalaḥ
"— equipped with every weapon, furnished with fine coverings." Knowing that chariot had been brought, the mighty lord of danavas —
Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.5.16.5)
मानुषं देहमास्थाय सङ्ग्रामे गन्तुमुद्यतः । विचार्य मनसा चेति देवी मां प्रेक्ष्य दुर्मुखम्
mānuṣaṁ dehamāsthāya saṅgrāme gantumudyataḥ | vicārya manasā ceti devī māṁ prekṣya durmukham
— resolved to take on a human form and go forth to battle; and he reflected in his mind thus: "If the Goddess sees me as ugly-faced —"
Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.5.16.6)
शृङ्गिणं महिषं नूनं विमना सा भविष्यति । नारीणां च प्रियं रूपं तथा चातुर्यमित्यपि
śṛṅgiṇaṁ mahiṣaṁ nūnaṁ vimanā sā bhaviṣyati | nārīṇāṁ ca priyaṁ rūpaṁ tathā cāturyamityapi
"— as a horned buffalo, she will surely be repelled. For women, beauty of form is dear, and likewise cleverness."
Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.5.16.7)
तस्माद्रूपं च चातुर्यं कृत्वा यास्यामि तां प्रति । यथा मां वीक्ष्य सा बाला प्रेमयुक्ता भविष्यति
tasmādrūpaṁ ca cāturyaṁ kṛtvā yāsyāmi tāṁ prati | yathā māṁ vīkṣya sā bālā premayuktā bhaviṣyati
"Therefore, taking on both beauty of form and cleverness, I shall go to her, so that seeing me, that young woman will be filled with love."
Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.5.16.8)
ममापि च तदैव स्यात्सुखं नान्यस्वरूपतः । इति सञ्चिन्त्य मनसा दानवेन्द्रो महाबलः
mamāpi ca tadaiva syātsukhaṁ nānyasvarūpataḥ | iti sañcintya manasā dānavendro mahābalaḥ
"Then indeed happiness will be mine — not otherwise, in any other form." Having thus reflected in his mind, the mighty lord of danavas —
Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.5.16.9)
त्यक्त्वा तन्माहिषं रूपं बभूव पुरुषः शुभः । सर्वायुधधरः श्रीमांश्चारुभूषणभूषितः
tyaktvā tanmāhiṣaṁ rūpaṁ babhūva puruṣaḥ śubhaḥ | sarvāyudhadharaḥ śrīmāṁścārubhūṣaṇabhūṣitaḥ
— abandoning his buffalo form, became a handsome man, resplendent, bearing every weapon, adorned with beautiful ornaments.
Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.5.16.10)
दिव्याम्बरधरः कान्तः पुष्पबाण इवापरः । रथोपविष्टः केयूरस्रग्वी बाणधनुर्धरः
divyāmbaradharaḥ kāntaḥ puṣpabāṇa ivāparaḥ | rathopaviṣṭaḥ keyūrasragvī bāṇadhanurdharaḥ
Clad in divine garments, charming, like a second god of love, seated on his chariot, wearing armlets and a garland, bearing bow and arrow.
Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.5.16.11)
सेनापरिवृतो देवीं जगाम मदगर्वितः । मनोज्ञं रूपमास्थाय मानिनीनां मनोहरम्
senāparivṛto devīṁ jagāma madagarvitaḥ | manojñaṁ rūpamāsthāya māninīnāṁ manoharam
Surrounded by his army, swollen with pride, he went toward the Goddess, having assumed a captivating form pleasing to proud women.
Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.5.16.12)
तमागतं समालोक्य दैत्यानामधिपं तदा । बहुभिः संवृतं वीरैर्देवी शङ्खमवादयत्
tamāgataṁ samālokya daityānāmadhipaṁ tadā | bahubhiḥ saṁvṛtaṁ vīrairdevī śaṅkhamavādayat
Seeing that lord of daityas approaching, surrounded by many heroes, the Goddess sounded her conch.
Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.5.16.13)
स शङ्खनिनदं श्रुत्वा जनविस्मयकारकम् । समीपमेत्य देव्यास्तु तामुवाच हसन्निव
sa śaṅkhaninadaṁ śrutvā janavismayakārakam | samīpametya devyāstu tāmuvāca hasanniva
Hearing that conch-blast, which filled onlookers with wonder, he came near the Goddess and spoke to her, as though laughing:
Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.5.16.14)
देवि संसारचक्रेऽस्मिन्वर्तमानो जनः किल । नरो वाथ तथा नारी सुखं वाञ्छति सर्वथा
devi saṁsāracakre'sminvartamāno janaḥ kila | naro vātha tathā nārī sukhaṁ vāñchati sarvathā
"O Goddess, indeed, any person living within this wheel of worldly existence — whether man or woman — desires happiness in every way."
Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.5.16.15)
सुखं संयोगजं नॄणां नासंयोगे भवेदिह । संयोगो बहुधा भिन्नस्तान्ब्रवीमि शृणुष्व ह
sukhaṁ saṁyogajaṁ nṝṇāṁ nāsaṁyoge bhavediha | saṁyogo bahudhā bhinnastānbravīmi śṛṇuṣva ha
"For human beings, happiness arises from union; it does not arise in the absence of union. Union is of many different kinds — let me describe them; listen."
Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.5.16.16)
भेदान्सुप्रीतिहेतूत्थान्स्वभावोत्थाननेकशः । तत्र प्रीतिभवानादौ कथयामि यथामति
bhedānsuprītihetūtthānsvabhāvotthānanekaśaḥ | tatra prītibhavānādau kathayāmi yathāmati
"The distinctions arising from the causes of true affection, and the many that arise from natural disposition — of these, I shall first speak of those born of affection, according to my understanding."
Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.5.16.17)
मातापित्रोस्तु पुत्रेण संयोगस्तूत्तमः स्मृतः । भ्रातुर्भ्रात्रा तथा योगः कारणान्मध्यमो मतः
mātāpitrostu putreṇa saṁyogastūttamaḥ smṛtaḥ | bhrāturbhrātrā tathā yogaḥ kāraṇānmadhyamo mataḥ
"The union of parents with a son is remembered as the highest; the union of brother with brother, being due to a specific cause, is considered middling."
Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.5.16.18)
उत्तमस्य सुखस्यैव दातृत्वादुत्तमः स्मृतः । तस्मादल्पसुखस्यैव प्रदातृत्वाच्च मध्यमः
uttamasya sukhasyaiva dātṛtvāduttamaḥ smṛtaḥ | tasmādalpasukhasyaiva pradātṛtvācca madhyamaḥ
"It is called highest because it bestows the highest happiness; the other is called middling because it bestows only a lesser happiness."
Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.5.16.19)
नाविकानां तु संयोगः स्मृतः स्वाभाविको बुधैः । विविधावृतचित्तानां प्रसङ्गपरिवर्तिनाम्
nāvikānāṁ tu saṁyogaḥ smṛtaḥ svābhāviko budhaiḥ | vividhāvṛtacittānāṁ prasaṅgaparivartinām
"The union among boatmen — fellow travelers, whose minds are engaged in various pursuits and who come together by mere circumstance — is regarded by the wise as merely incidental."
Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.5.16.20)
अत्यल्पसुखदातृत्वात्कनिष्ठोऽयं स्मृतो बुधैः । अत्युत्तमस्तु संयोगः संसारे सुखदः सदा
atyalpasukhadātṛtvātkaniṣṭho'yaṁ smṛto budhaiḥ | atyuttamastu saṁyogaḥ saṁsāre sukhadaḥ sadā
"Because it bestows only very little happiness, this is deemed by the wise to be the lowest kind. But the very highest union is that which ever gives happiness in this world —"
Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.5.16.21)
नारीपुरुषयोः कान्ते समानवयसो सदा । संयोगो यः समाख्यातः स एवात्युत्तमः स्मृतः
nārīpuruṣayoḥ kānte samānavayaso sadā | saṁyogo yaḥ samākhyātaḥ sa evātyuttamaḥ smṛtaḥ
"— that between a woman and a man, O beloved, ever of equal age; that union, so described, is remembered as the very highest."
Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.5.16.22)
अत्युत्तमसुखस्यैव दातृत्वात्स तथाविधः । चातुर्यरूपवेषाद्यैः कुलशीलगुणैस्तथा
atyuttamasukhasyaiva dātṛtvātsa tathāvidhaḥ | cāturyarūpaveṣādyaiḥ kulaśīlaguṇaistathā
"It is of such a kind because it grants the very highest happiness — through cleverness, beauty, dress, and likewise through family, character, and virtue."
Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.5.16.23)
परस्परसमुत्कर्षः कथ्यते हि परस्परम् । तं चेत्करोषि संयोगं वीरेण च मया सह
parasparasamutkarṣaḥ kathyate hi parasparam | taṁ cetkaroṣi saṁyogaṁ vīreṇa ca mayā saha
"— each surpassing the other in turn, so it is said. And if you were to form that very union with a hero — with me —"
Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.5.16.24)
अत्युत्तमसुखस्यैव प्राप्तिः स्यात्ते न संशयः । नानाविधानि रूपाणि करोमि स्वेच्छया प्रिये
atyuttamasukhasyaiva prāptiḥ syātte na saṁśayaḥ | nānāvidhāni rūpāṇi karomi svecchayā priye
"— you would surely attain the very highest happiness, no doubt of it. I can assume many different forms at my own will, O beloved."
Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.5.16.25)
इन्द्रादयः सुराः सर्वे सङ्ग्रामे विजिता मया । रत्नानि यानि दिव्यानि भवनेऽस्मिन्ममाधुना
indrādayaḥ surāḥ sarve saṅgrāme vijitā mayā | ratnāni yāni divyāni bhavane'sminmamādhunā
"Indra and all the other gods have been conquered by me in battle. Whatever divine jewels there now are in my palace —"
Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.5.16.26)
भुङ्क्ष्व त्वं तानि सर्वाणि यथेष्टं देहि वा यथा । पट्टराज्ञी भवाद्य त्वं दासोऽस्मि तव सुन्दरि
bhuṅkṣva tvaṁ tāni sarvāṇi yatheṣṭaṁ dehi vā yathā | paṭṭarājñī bhavādya tvaṁ dāso'smi tava sundari
"— enjoy them all as you please, or give them away as you wish. Become today my crowned queen; I am your servant, O beautiful one."
Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.5.16.27)
वैरं त्यजेऽहं देवैस्तु तव वाक्यान्न संशयः । यथा त्वं सुखमाप्नोषि तथाहं करवाणि वै
vairaṁ tyaje'haṁ devaistu tava vākyānna saṁśayaḥ | yathā tvaṁ sukhamāpnoṣi tathāhaṁ karavāṇi vai
"I shall give up my enmity with the gods at your very word, no doubt of it. Whatever will bring you happiness, that I shall surely do."
Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.5.16.28)
आज्ञापय विशालाक्षि तथाहं प्रकरोम्यथ । चित्तं मे तव रूपेण मोहितं चारुभाषिणि
ājñāpaya viśālākṣi tathāhaṁ prakaromyatha | cittaṁ me tava rūpeṇa mohitaṁ cārubhāṣiṇi
"Command me, O large-eyed one, and I shall act accordingly. My mind, O sweetly-speaking one, is bewitched by your beauty."
Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.5.16.29)
आतुरोऽस्मि वरारोहे प्राप्तस्ते शरणं किल । प्रपन्नं पाहि रम्भोरु कामबाणैः प्रपीडितम्
āturo'smi varārohe prāptaste śaraṇaṁ kila | prapannaṁ pāhi rambhoru kāmabāṇaiḥ prapīḍitam
"I am tormented, O lovely one; I have indeed come for your refuge. Protect this one who has taken shelter with you, O plantain-thighed one, sorely afflicted by the arrows of desire."
Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.5.16.30)
धर्माणामुत्तमो धर्मः शरणागतरक्षणम् । त्वदीयोऽस्म्यसितापाङ्गि सेवकोऽहं कृशोदरि
dharmāṇāmuttamo dharmaḥ śaraṇāgatarakṣaṇam | tvadīyo'smyasitāpāṅgi sevako'haṁ kṛśodari
"The highest of all duties is the protection of one who has sought refuge. I am yours, O dark-eyed one; I am your servant, O slender-waisted one."
Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.5.16.31)
मरणान्तं वचः सत्यं नान्यथा प्रकरोम्यहम् । पादौ नतोऽस्मि तन्वङ्गि त्यक्त्वा नानायुधानि ते
maraṇāntaṁ vacaḥ satyaṁ nānyathā prakaromyaham | pādau nato'smi tanvaṅgi tyaktvā nānāyudhāni te
"This word of mine holds true even unto death; I shall not act otherwise. I bow at your feet, O slender one, having cast aside all my many weapons."
Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.5.16.32)
दयां कुरु विशालाक्षि तप्तोऽस्मि काममार्गणैः । जन्मप्रभृति चार्वङ्गि दैन्यं नाचरितं मया
dayāṁ kuru viśālākṣi tapto'smi kāmamārgaṇaiḥ | janmaprabhṛti cārvaṅgi dainyaṁ nācaritaṁ mayā
"Show compassion, O large-eyed one; I am scorched by the arrows of desire. O lovely-limbed one, ever since my birth I have never practiced abjectness —"
Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.5.16.33)
ब्रह्मादीनीश्वरान्प्राप्य त्वयि तद्विदधाम्यहम् । चरितं मम जानन्ति रणे ब्रह्मादयः सुराः
brahmādīnīśvarānprāpya tvayi tadvidadhāmyaham | caritaṁ mama jānanti raṇe brahmādayaḥ surāḥ
"— not even before lords such as Brahma; yet before you, I now do so. Brahma and the other gods know well my conduct in battle."
Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.5.16.34)
सोऽप्यहं तव दासोऽस्मि मन्मुखं पश्य भामिनि । व्यास उवाच । इति ब्रुवाणं तं दैत्यं देवी भगवती हि सा
so'pyahaṁ tava dāso'smi manmukhaṁ paśya bhāmini | vyāsa uvāca | iti bruvāṇaṁ taṁ daityaṁ devī bhagavatī hi sā
"Yet even I have become your servant — look upon my face, O lovely one." Vyasa said: To that daitya speaking thus, the blessed Goddess —
Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.5.16.35)
प्रहस्य सस्मितं वाक्यमुवाच वरवर्णिनी । देव्युवाच । नाहं पुरुषमिच्छामि परमं पुरुषं विना
prahasya sasmitaṁ vākyamuvāca varavarṇinī | devyuvāca | nāhaṁ puruṣamicchāmi paramaṁ puruṣaṁ vinā
— laughing, spoke smilingly, that fairest of women. The Goddess said: "I desire no man other than the Supreme Person."
Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.5.16.36)
तस्य चेच्छास्म्यहं दैत्य सृजामि सकलं जगत् । स मां पश्यति विश्वात्मा तस्याहं प्रकृतिः शिवा
tasya cecchāsmyahaṁ daitya sṛjāmi sakalaṁ jagat | sa māṁ paśyati viśvātmā tasyāhaṁ prakṛtiḥ śivā
"I am indeed his will, O daitya, by which I create the entire universe. He, the Soul of the universe, beholds me; I am his auspicious Prakriti."
Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.5.16.37)
तत्सान्निध्यवशादेव चैतन्यं मयि शाश्वतम् । जडाहं तस्य संयोगात्प्रभवामि सचेतना
tatsānnidhyavaśādeva caitanyaṁ mayi śāśvatam | jaḍāhaṁ tasya saṁyogātprabhavāmi sacetanā
"It is by the power of his nearness alone that eternal consciousness is in me. I am by nature inert; it is only through union with him that I become active and conscious —"
Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.5.16.38)
अयस्कान्तस्य सान्निध्यादयसश्चेतना यथा । न ग्राम्यसुखवाञ्छा मे कदाचिदपि जायते
ayaskāntasya sānnidhyādayasaścetanā yathā | na grāmyasukhavāñchā me kadācidapi jāyate
"— just as iron becomes 'animated' only in the presence of a magnet. Never does the desire for worldly, sensual pleasure ever arise in me."
Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.5.16.39)
मूर्खस्त्वमसि मन्दात्मन् यत्स्त्रीसङ्गं चिकीर्षसि । नरस्य बन्धनार्थाय शृङ्खला स्त्री प्रकीर्तिता
mūrkhastvamasi mandātman yatstrīsaṅgaṁ cikīrṣasi | narasya bandhanārthāya śṛṅkhalā strī prakīrtitā
"You are a fool, O dull-souled one, in that you desire union with a woman. Woman has been declared to be the very chain forged for man's bondage."
Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.5.16.40)
लोहबद्धोऽपि मुच्येत स्त्रीबद्धो नैव मुच्यते । किमिच्छसि च मन्दात्मन् मूत्रागारस्य सेवनम्
lohabaddho'pi mucyeta strībaddho naiva mucyate | kimicchasi ca mandātman mūtrāgārasya sevanam
"One bound in iron may yet be freed; one bound by a woman is never freed. What is it you desire, O dull-witted one — the service of a house of urine?"
Verse 41 (devibhagavatam.5.16.41)
शमं कुरु सुखाय त्वं शमात्सुखमवाप्स्यसि । नारीसङ्गे महद्दुःखं जानन्किं त्वं विमुह्यसि
śamaṁ kuru sukhāya tvaṁ śamātsukhamavāpsyasi | nārīsaṅge mahadduḥkhaṁ jānankiṁ tvaṁ vimuhyasi
"Cultivate tranquility for your own happiness; from tranquility you shall attain happiness. Knowing that great sorrow lies in the company of women, why are you so deluded?"
Verse 42 (devibhagavatam.5.16.42)
त्यज वैरं सुरैः सार्धं यथेष्टं विचरावनौ । पातालं गच्छ वा कामं जीवितेच्छा यदस्ति ते
tyaja vairaṁ suraiḥ sārdhaṁ yatheṣṭaṁ vicarāvanau | pātālaṁ gaccha vā kāmaṁ jīvitecchā yadasti te
"Give up your enmity with the gods; wander the earth as you please. Or go down to Patala, if you have any wish to live."
Verse 43 (devibhagavatam.5.16.43)
अथवा कुरु सङ्ग्रामं बलवत्यस्मि साम्प्रतम् । प्रेषिताहं सुरैः सर्वैस्तव नाशाय दानव
athavā kuru saṅgrāmaṁ balavatyasmi sāmpratam | preṣitāhaṁ suraiḥ sarvaistava nāśāya dānava
"Or else, fight — I am powerful now. I have been sent by all the gods for your very destruction, O danava."
Verse 44 (devibhagavatam.5.16.44)
सत्यं ब्रवीमि येनाद्य त्वया वचनसौहृदम् । दर्शितं तेन तुष्टास्मि जीवन्गच्छ यथासुखम्
satyaṁ bravīmi yenādya tvayā vacanasauhṛdam | darśitaṁ tena tuṣṭāsmi jīvangaccha yathāsukham
"I speak truly: since you have shown me today the kindness of your words, I am pleased — go and live as you please."
Verse 45 (devibhagavatam.5.16.45)
सतां सप्तपदी मैत्री तेन मुञ्चामि जीवितम् । मरणेच्छास्ति चेद्युद्धं कुरु वीर यथासुखम्
satāṁ saptapadī maitrī tena muñcāmi jīvitam | maraṇecchāsti cedyuddhaṁ kuru vīra yathāsukham
"Friendship among the noble is sealed by seven steps taken together — for that reason I spare your life. But if you desire death, then fight, O hero, as you please."
Verse 46 (devibhagavatam.5.16.46)
हनिष्यामि महाबाहो त्वामहं नात्र संशयः । व्यास उवाच । इति तस्या वचः श्रुत्वा दानवः काममोहितः
haniṣyāmi mahābāho tvāmahaṁ nātra saṁśayaḥ | vyāsa uvāca | iti tasyā vacaḥ śrutvā dānavaḥ kāmamohitaḥ
"I shall slay you, O mighty-armed one — of this there is no doubt." Vyasa said: Hearing her words, the danava, deluded by desire —
Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.5.16.47)
उवाच श्लक्ष्णया वाचा मधुरं वचनं ततः । बिभेम्यहं वरारोहे त्वां प्रहर्तुं वरानने
uvāca ślakṣṇayā vācā madhuraṁ vacanaṁ tataḥ | bibhemyahaṁ varārohe tvāṁ prahartuṁ varānane
— spoke then in a soft voice, sweet words: "I am afraid, O lovely one, O fair-faced one, to strike you."
Verse 48 (devibhagavatam.5.16.48)
कोमलां चारुसर्वाङ्गीं नारीं नरविमोहिनीम् । जित्वा हरिहरादींश्च लोकपालांश्च सर्वशः
komalāṁ cārusarvāṅgīṁ nārīṁ naravimohinīm | jitvā hariharādīṁśca lokapālāṁśca sarvaśaḥ
"— you, a delicate woman, beautiful in every limb, one who bewilders men, though I have conquered Hari, Hara, and all the guardians of the world in every direction."
Verse 49 (devibhagavatam.5.16.49)
किं त्वया सह युद्धं मे युक्तं कमललोचने । रोचते यदि चार्वङ्गि विवाहं कुरु मां भज
kiṁ tvayā saha yuddhaṁ me yuktaṁ kamalalocane | rocate yadi cārvaṅgi vivāhaṁ kuru māṁ bhaja
"Is it fitting for me to fight with you, O lotus-eyed one? If it pleases you, O lovely-limbed one, marry me — accept me."
Verse 50 (devibhagavatam.5.16.50)
नोचेद् गच्छ यथेष्टं ते देशं यस्मात्समागता । नाहं त्वां प्रहरिष्यामि यतो मैत्री कृता त्वया
noced gaccha yatheṣṭaṁ te deśaṁ yasmātsamāgatā | nāhaṁ tvāṁ prahariṣyāmi yato maitrī kṛtā tvayā
"If not, then go back to whatever land you came from, as you please. I shall not strike you, since you have offered me friendship."
Verse 51 (devibhagavatam.5.16.51)
हितमुक्तं शुभं वाक्यं तस्माद् गच्छ यथासुखम् । का शोभा मे भवेदन्ते हत्वा त्वां चारुलोचनाम्
hitamuktaṁ śubhaṁ vākyaṁ tasmād gaccha yathāsukham | kā śobhā me bhavedante hatvā tvāṁ cārulocanām
"You have spoken beneficial and auspicious words to me; therefore, go as you please. What glory would there be for me, in the end, from killing you, O lovely-eyed one?"
Verse 52 (devibhagavatam.5.16.52)
स्त्रीहत्या बालहत्या च ब्रह्महत्या दुरत्यया । गृहीत्वा त्वां गृहं नूनं गच्छाम्यद्य वरानने
strīhatyā bālahatyā ca brahmahatyā duratyayā | gṛhītvā tvāṁ gṛhaṁ nūnaṁ gacchāmyadya varānane
"The killing of a woman, the killing of a child, the killing of a brahmin — these sins are hard to overcome. I shall instead surely take you home with me today, O fair-faced one."
Verse 53 (devibhagavatam.5.16.53)
तथापि मे फलं न स्याद्बलाद्भोगसुखं कुतः । प्रब्रवीमि सुकेशि त्वां विनयावनतो यतः
tathāpi me phalaṁ na syādbalādbhogasukhaṁ kutaḥ | prabravīmi sukeśi tvāṁ vinayāvanato yataḥ
"Yet even that would bring me no true reward — how could there be any pleasure of enjoyment obtained by force? I speak to you, O fair-haired one, humbly bowing before you."
Verse 54 (devibhagavatam.5.16.54)
पुरुषस्य सुखं न स्यादृते कान्तामुखाम्बुजात् । तत्तथैव हि नारीणां न स्याच्च पुरुषं विना
puruṣasya sukhaṁ na syādṛte kāntāmukhāmbujāt | tattathaiva hi nārīṇāṁ na syācca puruṣaṁ vinā
"There can be no happiness for a man apart from the lotus-face of his beloved; and likewise, there can be none for a woman apart from a man."
Verse 55 (devibhagavatam.5.16.55)
संयोगे सुखसम्भूतिर्वियोगे दुःखसम्भवः । कान्तासि रूपसम्पन्ना सर्वाभरणभूषिता
saṁyoge sukhasambhūtirviyoge duḥkhasambhavaḥ | kāntāsi rūpasampannā sarvābharaṇabhūṣitā
"In union, happiness is born; in separation, sorrow arises. You are lovely, endowed with beauty, adorned with every ornament."
Verse 56 (devibhagavatam.5.16.56)
चातुर्यं त्वयि किं नास्ति यतो मां न भजस्यहो । तवोपदिष्टं केनेदं भोगानां परिवर्जनम्
cāturyaṁ tvayi kiṁ nāsti yato māṁ na bhajasyaho | tavopadiṣṭaṁ kenedaṁ bhogānāṁ parivarjanam
"Does cleverness not exist in you, that you do not accept me? Who has taught you this renunciation of all worldly pleasures?"
Verse 57 (devibhagavatam.5.16.57)
वञ्चितासि प्रियालापे वैरिणा केनचित्त्विह । मुञ्चाग्रहमिमं कान्ते कुरु कार्यं सुशोभनम्
vañcitāsi priyālāpe vairiṇā kenacittviha | muñcāgrahamimaṁ kānte kuru kāryaṁ suśobhanam
"You have surely been deceived in matters of love by some enemy of yours. Give up this obstinacy, O beloved, and do what is truly fitting and beautiful."
Verse 58 (devibhagavatam.5.16.58)
सुखं तव ममापि स्याद्विवाहे विहिते किल । विष्णुर्लक्ष्या सहाभाति सावित्र्या च सहात्मभूः
sukhaṁ tava mamāpi syādvivāhe vihite kila | viṣṇurlakṣyā sahābhāti sāvitryā ca sahātmabhūḥ
"Happiness would be both yours and mine, were our marriage to take place. Vishnu shines together with Lakshmi, and Brahma the self-born with Savitri."
Verse 59 (devibhagavatam.5.16.59)
रुद्रो भाति च पार्वत्या शच्या शतमखस्तथा । का नारी पतिहीना च सुखं प्राप्नोति शाश्वतम्
rudro bhāti ca pārvatyā śacyā śatamakhastathā | kā nārī patihīnā ca sukhaṁ prāpnoti śāśvatam
"Rudra shines together with Parvati, and likewise Indra with Shachi. What woman without a husband ever attains lasting happiness?"
Verse 60 (devibhagavatam.5.16.60)
येन त्वमसितापाङ्गि न करोषि पतिं शुभम् । कामः क्वाद्य गतः कान्ते यस्त्वां बाणैः सुकोमलैः
yena tvamasitāpāṅgi na karoṣi patiṁ śubham | kāmaḥ kvādya gataḥ kānte yastvāṁ bāṇaiḥ sukomalaiḥ
"Why then, O dark-eyed one, do you not take a fair husband? Where has the god of love gone today, O beloved, who with his tender arrows —"
Verse 61 (devibhagavatam.5.16.61)
मादनैः पञ्चभिः कामं न ताडयति मन्दधीः । मन्येऽहमिव कामोऽपि दयावांस्त्वयि सुन्दरि
mādanaiḥ pañcabhiḥ kāmaṁ na tāḍayati mandadhīḥ | manye'hamiva kāmo'pi dayāvāṁstvayi sundari
"— his five maddening arrows — does not strike you? I think that even Kama himself, dull-witted, must feel compassion toward you, O beauty."
Verse 62 (devibhagavatam.5.16.62)
अबलेति च मन्वानो न प्रेरयति मार्गणान् । मनोभवस्य वैरं वा किमप्यस्ति मया सह
abaleti ca manvāno na prerayati mārgaṇān | manobhavasya vairaṁ vā kimapyasti mayā saha
"Thinking you weak, he does not loose his shafts at you. Or perhaps there is some enmity between the Mind-born god and myself —"
Verse 63 (devibhagavatam.5.16.63)
तेन च त्वय्यरालाक्षि न मुञ्चति शिलीमुखान् । अथवा मेऽहितैर्देवैर्वारितोऽसौ झषध्वजः
tena ca tvayyarālākṣi na muñcati śilīmukhān | athavā me'hitairdevairvārito'sau jhaṣadhvajaḥ
"— and for that reason, O curved-eyed one, he does not release his flower-arrows upon you. Or else that fish-bannered god has been restrained by my enemies, the gods —"
Verse 64 (devibhagavatam.5.16.64)
सुखविध्वंसिभिस्तेन त्वयि न प्रहरत्यपि । त्यक्त्वा मां मृगशावाक्षि पश्चात्तापं करिष्यसि
sukhavidhvaṁsibhistena tvayi na praharatyapi | tyaktvā māṁ mṛgaśāvākṣi paścāttāpaṁ kariṣyasi
"— those destroyers of happiness — and so he does not strike even you. O fawn-eyed one, having spurned me, you will afterward feel deep regret —"
Verse 65 (devibhagavatam.5.16.65)
मन्दोदरीव तन्वङ्गि परित्यज्य शुभं नृपम् । अनुकूलं पतिं पश्चात्सा चकार शठं पतिम् । कामार्ता च यदा जाता मोहेन व्याकुलान्तरा
mandodarīva tanvaṅgi parityajya śubhaṁ nṛpam | anukūlaṁ patiṁ paścātsā cakāra śaṭhaṁ patim | kāmārtā ca yadā jātā mohena vyākulāntarā
"— just as Mandodari, O slender one, having abandoned a good and devoted king, afterward, when tormented by desire and her heart bewildered with delusion, took a deceitful man as her husband."
