Chapter 18All chaptersChapter 20

Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.5.19.1)

vyāsa uvāca | atha pramuditāḥ sarve devā indrapurogamāḥ | mahiṣaṁ nihataṁ dṛṣṭvā tuṣṭuvurjagadambikām

Vyasa said: Then all the gods, greatly rejoicing, with Indra at their head, seeing Mahisha slain, praised the Mother of the world.

Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.5.19.2)

devā ūcuḥ | brahmā sṛjatyavati viṣṇuridaṁ maheśaḥ śaktyā tavaiva harate nanu cāntakāle || īśā na te'pi ca bhavanti tayā vihīnā stasmāttvameva jagataḥ sthitināśakartrī

The gods said: "Brahma creates, Vishnu preserves this universe, and Maheśa destroys it at the time of dissolution — indeed, by your power alone. Even these lords cannot exist without that power of yours; therefore you alone are the doer of the world's preservation and destruction."

Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.5.19.3)

kīrtirmatiḥ smṛtigatī karuṇā dayā tvaṁ śraddhā dhṛtiśca vasudhā kamalājapā ca | puṣṭiḥ kalātha vijayā girijā jayā tvaṁ tuṣṭiḥ pramā tvamasi buddhirumā ramā ca

"You are Fame, Intellect, Memory, and Refuge; you are Compassion and Mercy; you are Faith, Fortitude, the Earth, Lakshmi and Japa; you are Nourishment, Kala, Vijaya, Girija, and Jaya; you are Contentment and Right Knowledge; you are Intelligence, Uma, and Rama."

Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.5.19.4)

vidyā kṣamā jagati kāntirapīha medhā sarvaṁ tvameva viditā bhuvanatraye'smin | ābhirvinā tava tu śaktibhirāśu kartuṁ ko vā kṣamaḥ sakalalokanivāsabhūme

"You are Knowledge, Forbearance, and Beauty in this world, and likewise Intellect; you alone are known as everything in these three worlds. Who, indeed, without these powers of yours, would be capable of accomplishing anything swiftly, O foundation on which all the worlds dwell?"

Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.5.19.5)

tvaṁ dhāraṇā nanu na cedasi kūrmanāgau dhartuṁ kṣamau kathamilāmapi tau bhavetām | pṛthvī na cettvamasi vā gagane kathaṁ sthā syatyetadamba nikhilaṁ bahubhārayuktam

"You indeed are the power of holding up — for if you were not, how could the Tortoise and the Serpent be capable of bearing up even the earth? And if you were not the Earth herself, how could this whole, so heavily burdened, remain suspended in the sky, O Mother?"

Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.5.19.6)

ye vā stuvanti manujā amarānvimūḍhā māyāguṇaistava caturmukhaviṣṇurudrān | śubhrāṁśuvahniyamavāyugaṇeśamukhyān kiṁ tvāmṛte janani te prabhavanti kārye

"Those deluded men who praise, through the play of your own maya, the gods — four-faced Brahma, Vishnu, Rudra, the moon, fire, Yama, wind, Ganesha, and the rest — what can they accomplish in any task, O mother, without you?"

Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.5.19.7)

ye juhvati pravitate'lpadhiyo'mba yajñe vahnau surānsamadhikṛtya haviḥ samṛddham | svāhā na cettvamasi te kathamāpuraddhā tvāmeva kiṁ na hi yajanti tato hi mūḍhāḥ

"Those of little wisdom who, at the great sacrifice, offer rich oblations into the fire in honor of the gods, O Mother — if you were not Svaha, how would their offerings ever truly reach them? Why then do they not worship you alone? They are indeed fools."

Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.5.19.8)

bhogapradāsi bhavatīha carācarāṇāṁ svāṁśairdadāsi khalu jīvanameva nityam | svīyānsurāñjanani poṣayasīha yadva ttadvatparānapi ca pālayasīti hetoḥ

"You are the giver of enjoyment here to all moving and unmoving beings; through your own portions you ever bestow their very life. For that reason, O mother, just as you nourish your own gods here, so too do you protect all others."

Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.5.19.9)

mātaḥ svayaṁviracitānvipine vinodā dvandhyānpalāśarahitāṁśca kaṭūṁśca vṛkṣān | nocchedayanti puruṣā nipuṇāḥ kathañci ttasmāttvamapyatitarāṁ paripāsi daityān

"O Mother, skilled men do not, out of mere sport, cut down even barren, leafless, or bitter trees that they themselves have grown in a forest — for some reason or another. For this very reason, you too protect even the daityas exceedingly."

Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.5.19.10)

yattvaṁ tu haṁsi raṇamūrdhni śarairarātī ndevāṅganāsuratakelimatīnviditvā | dehāntare'pi karuṇārasamādadānā tatte caritramidamīpsitapūraṇāya

"That you slay your enemies at the height of battle with your arrows, knowing their evil intent, yet even so taking up within yourself the very essence of compassion — this conduct of yours is only for the fulfilment of what is truly desired."

Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.5.19.11)

"It is a wonder that these renowned and powerful danavas are not, in fact, deprived of their very lives merely by your thought — for whose sake, O Mother, this taking on of a body of yours is itself but the delight of your own play; there is no other reason for it here."

Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.5.19.12)

prāpte kalāvahaha duṣṭatare ca kāle na tvāṁ bhajanti manujā nanu vañcitāste | dhūrtaiḥ purāṇacaturairhariśaṅkarāṇāṁ sevāparāśca vihitāstava nirmitānām

"Alas, when the Kali age arrives, an even more wicked time, men do not worship you — indeed they are deceived, by cunning experts in the Puranas, and made devoted instead to the service of Hari and Shankara — beings who are themselves your own creation."

Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.5.19.13)

jñātvā surāṁstava vaśānasurārditāṁśca ye vai bhajanti bhuvi bhāvayutā vibhagnān | dhṛtvā kare suvimalaṁ khalu dīpakaṁ te kūpe patanti manujā vijale'tighore

"Those who, knowing the gods to be under your sway, and yet, tormented by the asuras, broken, worship them nonetheless upon this earth, with devoted hearts — such men, even while holding a bright, clear lamp in hand, fall into a most terrible, waterless well."

Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.5.19.14)

vidyā tvameva sukhadāsukhadāpyavidyā mātastvameva jananārtiharā narāṇām | mokṣārthibhistu kalitā kila mandadhībhi rnārādhitā janani bhogaparaistathājñaiḥ

"You alone are Vidya, the giver of happiness; you alone are Avidya, the giver of sorrow. You alone, O Mother, remove the birth-sorrow of men. Yet you are known only by those seekers of liberation, and remain unworshipped by the dull-witted, those devoted to mere enjoyment, and the ignorant."

Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.5.19.15)

brahmā haraśca harirapyaniśaṁ śaraṇyaṁ pādāmbujaṁ tava bhajanti surāstathānye | tadvai na ye'lpamatayo manasā bhajanti bhrāntāḥ patanti satataṁ bhavasāgare te

"Brahma, Hara, and Hari, and the other gods too, ceaselessly worship your lotus feet, that refuge for all. Those of little understanding who do not worship them with their minds wander in delusion, ever falling into this ocean of worldly existence."

Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.5.19.16)

caṇḍi tvadaṅghrijalajottharajaḥprasādai rbrahmā karoti sakalaṁ bhuvanaṁ bhavādau | śauriśca pāti khalu saṁharate harastu tvāṁ sevate na manujastviha durbhago'sau

"O Chandi, by the grace of the very dust risen from your lotus feet, Brahma creates this entire world at the beginning of the age; Shauri preserves it, and Hara destroys it. That unfortunate man who does not serve you in this world —"

Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.5.19.17)

vāgdevatā tvamasi devi surāsurāṇāṁ vaktuṁ na te'maravarāḥ prabhavanti śaktāḥ | tvaṁ cenmukhe vasasi naiva yadaiva teṣāṁ yasmādbhavanti manujā na hi tadvihīnāḥ

"You are the very goddess of speech, O Devi, for both gods and asuras; even the best of the immortals are unable to speak of your full glory. For if you did not dwell upon their tongue, even men could not speak — since none exist devoid of you."

Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.5.19.18)

śapto haristu bhṛguṇā kupitena kāmaṁ mīno babhūva kamaṭhaḥ khalu sūkarastu | paścānnṛsiṁha iti yaśchalakṛddharāyāṁ tānsevatāṁ janani mṛtyubhayaṁ na kiṁ syāt

"Hari, cursed by Bhrigu in his anger, willingly became a fish, indeed a tortoise, and then a boar, and afterward Man-Lion — he who thus practiced deceit upon the Earth. O Mother, would not the fear of death still remain for those who serve such beings alone?"

Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.5.19.19)

śambhoḥ papāta bhuvi liṅgamidaṁ prasiddhaṁ śāpena tena ca bhṛgorvipine gatasya | taṁ ye narā bhuvi bhajanti kapālinaṁ tu teṣāṁ sukhaṁ kathamihāpi paratra mātaḥ

"This famous linga of Shambhu fell upon the earth by that very curse of Bhrigu, when he had gone into the forest. Those men who, upon this earth, worship that skull-bearing one — how, O Mother, can they have happiness, either here or in the world beyond?"

Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.5.19.20)

yo'bhūd gajānanagaṇādhipatirmaheśā ttaṁ ye bhajanti manujā vitathaprapannāḥ | jānanti te na sakalārthaphalapradātrīṁ tvāṁ devi viśvajananīṁ sukhasevanīyām

"Those men who worship him who became the elephant-faced lord of the ganas, born from Maheśa — men who have taken refuge in what is unreal — do not know you, O Devi, the Mother of the universe, the giver of the fruit of every desire, worthy of joyful worship."

Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.5.19.21)

citraṁ tvayārijanatāpi dayārdrabhāvā ddhatvā raṇe śitaśarairgamitā dyulokam | nocetsvakarmanicite niraye nitāntaṁ duḥkhātiduḥkhagatimāpadamāpatetsā

"It is a wonder that even your enemies, out of your heart melted with compassion, having been slain by you with sharp arrows in battle, are sent to the world of the gods — for otherwise, bound by the accumulation of their own deeds, they would fall into hell, into a state of the utmost, unbearable suffering."

Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.5.19.22)

brahmā haraśca harirapyuta garvabhāvā jjānanti te'pi vibudhā na tava prabhāvam | ke'nye bhavanti manujā vidituṁ samarthāḥ sammohitāstava guṇairamitaprabhāvaiḥ

"Even Brahma, Hara, and Hari, out of their own sense of pride, do not truly know your full power, wise as they are. What other men, then, could ever be capable of knowing it — bewildered as they all are by your qualities of boundless power?"

Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.5.19.23)

"Even those sages who exhaust themselves, yet do not worship your lotus feet, so hard to conceive, remain of deluded mind — devoted only to the worship of the sun and fire; the highest truth, the very essence of the Vedas, is not known by them, even through hundreds of scriptural recitations."

Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.5.19.24)

manye guṇāstava bhuvi prathitaprabhāvāḥ kurvanti ye hi vimukhānnanu bhaktibhāvāt | lokānsvabuddhiracitairvividhāgamaiśca viṣṇvīśabhāskaragaṇeśaparānvidhāya

"I think that it is your own qualities, of renowned power upon this earth, that turn people away, out of devotion, from true worship — by fashioning, through various scriptures composed by their own intellects, people who are instead devoted to Vishnu, Ishvara, the Sun, and Ganesha."

Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.5.19.25)

kurvanti ye tava padādvimukhānnarāgryā nsvoktāgamairhariharārcanabhaktiyogaiḥ | teṣāṁ na kupyasi dayāṁ kuruṣe'mbike tvaṁ tānmohamantranipuṇānprathayasyalaṁ ca

"Those who turn even the foremost of men away from your feet, through scriptures of their own making, through devotion to the worship of Hari and Hara — toward these you show no anger; rather, O Ambika, you show them compassion, and you yourself, in truth, spread abroad these very ones, so skilled in mantras of delusion."

Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.5.19.26)

turye yuge bhavati cātibalaṁ guṇasya turyasya tena mathitānyasadāgamāni | tvāṁ gopayanti nipuṇāḥ kavayaḥ kalau vai tvatkalpitānsuragaṇānapi saṁstuvanti

"In the fourth age, the power of the fourth guna becomes exceedingly strong; churned by that, false scriptures arise. Skilled poets, in the Kali age, conceal you, and instead praise the very hosts of gods that you yourself have fashioned."

Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.5.19.27)

dhyāyanti muktiphaladāṁ bhuvi yogasiddhāṁ vidyāṁ parāñca munayo'tiviśuddhasattvāḥ | te nāpnuvanti jananījaṭhare tu duḥkhaṁ dhanyāsta eva manujāstvayi ye vilīnāḥ

"Those sages of utterly pure being who meditate upon this earth on the supreme Knowledge, perfected through yoga, which bestows the fruit of liberation — they do not experience again the suffering of the mother's womb. Blessed indeed are those men who become absorbed in you."

Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.5.19.28)

cicchaktirasti paramātmani yena so'pi vyakto jagatsu vidito bhavakṛtyakartā | ko'nyastvayā virahitaḥ prabhavatyamuṣmin kartuṁ vihartumapi sañcalituṁ svaśaktyā

"There is a power of consciousness within the Supreme Self, by which that Self itself becomes manifest in the worlds, known as the doer of the deeds of existence. Who else, apart from you, is capable, by his own power, of acting, of enjoying, or even of moving at all, in this universe?"

Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.5.19.29)

tattvāni cidvirahitāni jagadvidhātuṁ kiṁ vā kṣamāṇi jagadamba yato jaḍāni | kiṁ cendriyāṇi guṇakarmayutāni santi devi tvayā virahitāni phalaṁ pradātum

"Are the material principles, devoid of consciousness, capable of fashioning this universe, O Mother of the world, since they are by nature inert? And are the senses, though endowed with their qualities and functions, capable, O Devi, of yielding any fruit at all, if devoid of you?"

Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.5.19.30)

devā makheṣvapi hutaṁ munibhiḥ svabhāgaṁ gṛhṇīyuramba vidhivatpratipāditaṁ kim | svāhā na cettvamasi tatra nimittabhūtā tasmāttvameva nanu pālayasīva viśvam

"Could the gods, O Mother, even receive their own share, duly offered in the sacrifices by the sages according to rite — if you, as Svaha, were not there to be the very instrumental cause of it? Therefore, it is you alone, indeed, who thus protects the entire universe."

Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.5.19.31)

sarvaṁ tvayedamakhilaṁ vihitaṁ bhavādau tvaṁ pāsi vai hariharapramukhāndigīśān | kāle'tsi viśvamapi te caritaṁ bhavādyaṁ jānanti naiva manujāḥ kva nu mandabhāgyāḥ

"By you was this entire universe fashioned at the beginning of creation; you indeed protect Hari, Hara, and the other foremost gods, and the guardians of the directions; and in time, you consume the universe as well. Men, unfortunate as they are, do not know this conduct of yours from the very beginning of creation — how could they?"

Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.5.19.32)

hatvāsuraṁ mahiṣarūpadharaṁ mahograṁ mātastvayā suragaṇaḥ kila rakṣito'yam | kāṁ te stutiṁ janani mandadhiyo vidāmo vedā gatiṁ tava yathārthatayā na jagmuḥ

"By slaying this exceedingly fierce asura who bore the form of a buffalo, O Mother, this host of gods has indeed been protected by you. What praise of you, O Mother, could we, of dull understanding, ever truly know — when even the Vedas have not truly grasped the fullness of your nature?"

Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.5.19.33)

kāryaṁ kṛtaṁ jagati no yadasau durātmā vairī hato bhuvanakaṇṭakadurvibhāvyaḥ | kīrtiḥ kṛtā nanu jagatsu kṛpā vidheyā pyasmāṁśca pāhi janani prathitaprabhāve

"Our task in this world has been accomplished, in that this evil-souled enemy — a thorn in the side of the universe, hard to even conceive of — has been slain. Indeed, fame has thereby been established throughout the worlds. Show your grace, and protect us too, O Mother, of renowned power."

Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.5.19.34)

vyāsa uvāca | evaṁ stutā surairdevī tānuvāca mṛdusvarā | anyatkāryaṁ ca duḥsādhyaṁ bruvantu surasattamāḥ

Vyasa said: Thus praised by the gods, the Goddess, in a gentle voice, said to them: "Let the best of the gods now tell me of any other difficult task to be accomplished."

Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.5.19.35)

yadā yadā hi devānāṁ kāryaṁ syādatidurghaṭam | smartavyāhaṁ tadā śīghraṁ nāśayiṣyāmi cāpadam

"Whenever any task of the gods becomes exceedingly difficult, I am then to be remembered at once, and I shall swiftly destroy the calamity."

Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.5.19.36)

devā ūcuḥ | sarvaṁ kṛtaṁ tvayā devi kāryaṁ naḥ khalu sāmpratam | yadayaṁ nihataḥ śatrurasmākaṁ mahiṣāsuraḥ

The gods said: "Every task of ours, O Devi, has indeed now been accomplished by you, in that this enemy of ours, Mahishasura, has been slain."

Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.5.19.37)

smariṣyāmo yathā te'mba sadaiva padapaṅkajam | tathā kuru jaganmātarbhaktiṁ tvayyapyacañcalām

"Grant, O Mother of the world, that we may ever remember your lotus feet always; and likewise grant us unwavering devotion to you."

Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.5.19.38)

aparādhasahasrāṇi mātaiva sahate sadā | iti jñātvā jagadyoniṁ na bhajante kuto janāḥ

"Only a mother ever endures a thousand offenses — knowing this, why then do people not worship you, the very womb of the universe?"

Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.5.19.39)
