The Earth's Joy After Mahisha's Death
Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.5.20.1)
janamejaya uvāca athādbhutaṁ vīkṣya mune prabhāvaṁ devyā jagacchāntikaraṁ parañca | na tṛptirasti dvijavarya śṛṇvataḥ kathāmṛtaṁ te mukhapadmajātam
Janamejaya said: "Having now witnessed, O sage, this wondrous and supreme power of the Goddess, bringer of peace to the world — O best of brahmins, I find no satiety in listening to this nectar of a tale, born from your lotus-mouth."
Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.5.20.2)
antarhitāyāṁ ca tadā bhavānyā cakruśca kiṁ devapurogamāste | devyāścaritra paramaṁ pavitraṁ durāpamevālpapuṇyairnarāṇām
"When Bhavani had thus vanished, what did the gods, headed by Indra, then do? This most sacred conduct of the Goddess is indeed hard for men of little merit to attain."
Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.5.20.3)
kastṛptimāpnoti kathāmṛtena bhinno'lpabhāgyātpaṭukarṇarandhraḥ | pītena yenāmaratāṁ prayāti dhiktānnarān ye na pibanti sādaram
"Who attains satiety from this nectar-tale, once his keen ears have been opened by the good fortune of hearing it — by drinking which one attains immortality? Shame upon those men who do not drink it reverently!"
Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.5.20.4)
līlācaritraṁ jagadambikāyā rakṣānvitaṁ devamahāmunīnām | saṁsāravārdhestaraṇaṁ narāṇāṁ kathaṁ kṛtajñā hi parityajeyuḥ
"This playful conduct of the Mother of the world, which brings protection to the gods and great sages, and which ferries men across the ocean of worldly existence — how could the grateful ever abandon it?"
Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.5.20.5)
muktāśca ye caiva mumukṣavaśca saṁsāriṇo rogayutāśca kecit | teṣāṁ sadā śrotrapuṭaiśca peyaṁ sarvārthadaṁ vedavido vadanti
"The knowers of the Veda declare that this tale, which grants every good, is ever to be drunk in through the cups of the ears — by the liberated, by those seeking liberation, by those bound in the world, and by those afflicted with any illness."
Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.5.20.6)
tathā viśeṣeṇa mune nṛpāṇāṁ dharmārthakāmeṣu sadā ratānām | muktāśca yasmātkhalu tatpibanti kathaṁ na peyaṁ rahitaiśca tebhyaḥ
"And especially so, O sage, for kings ever devoted to dharma, artha, and kama; since even the liberated drink of it, how should it not be drunk by those still lacking such attainment?"
Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.5.20.7)
yaiḥ pūjitā pūrvabhave bhavānī satkundapuṣpairatha campakaiśca | bailvairdalaiste bhuvi bhogayuktā nṛpā bhavantītyanumeyamevam
"Those by whom Bhavani was worshipped in a former life, with fine jasmine and champaka flowers, and with bilva leaves — they, it may be inferred, become kings upon this earth, endowed with every enjoyment."
Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.5.20.8)
ye bhaktihīnā samavāpya dehaṁ taṁ mānuṣaṁ bhāratabhūmibhāge | yairnārcitā te dhanadhānyahīnā rogānvitāḥ santativarjitāśca
"Those who, devoid of devotion, having obtained this human body in the land of Bharata, do not worship her — they become devoid of wealth and grain, afflicted with disease, and bereft of offspring."
Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.5.20.9)
bhramanti nityaṁ kila dāsabhūtā ājñākarāḥ kevalabhāravāhāḥ | divāniśaṁ svārthaparāḥ kadāpi naivāpnuvantyaudarapūrtimātram
"They wander about forever, indeed, as mere servants, executors of others' commands, mere bearers of burdens; day and night intent only upon their own self-interest, they never attain even so much as the mere filling of their stomachs."
Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.5.20.10)
andhāśca mūkā badhirāśca khañjāḥ kuṣṭhānvitā ye bhuvi duḥkhabhājaḥ | tatrānumānaṁ kavibhirvidheyaṁ nārādhitā taiḥ satataṁ bhavānī
"The blind, the mute, the deaf, the lame, and those afflicted with leprosy, who become vessels of sorrow upon this earth — of these too, the poets may infer, that they never worshipped Bhavani."
Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.5.20.11)
ye rājabhogānvitaṛddhipūrṇāḥ saṁsevyamānā bahubhirmanuṣyaiḥ | dṛśyanti ye vā vibhavaiḥ sametā staiḥ pūjitāmbetyanumeyameva
"Those who are seen endowed with royal enjoyments, full of prosperity, attended by many people, or possessed of great wealth — of these too, it may surely be inferred, that they have worshipped the Mother."
Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.5.20.12)

hatvā taṁ mahiṣaṁ pāpaṁ stutā sampūjitā suraiḥ | kva gatā sā mahālakṣmīḥ sarvatejaḥsamudbhavā
"Having slain that sinful Mahisha, and being praised and worshipped by the gods, where did that great Lakshmi go, she who arose from the combined splendor of all the gods?"
Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.5.20.14)
kathitaṁ te mahābhāga gatāntardhānamāśu sā | svarge vā mṛtyuloke vā saṁsthitā bhuvaneśvarī
"You have told me, O most fortunate one, that she swiftly vanished from sight — tell me now, is that Lady of the worlds established in heaven, or in the world of mortals?"
Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.5.20.15)
layaṁ gatā vā tatraiva vaikuṇṭhe vā samāśritā | athavā hemaśaile sā tattvato me vadādhunā
"Did she pass into dissolution right there? Or has she taken refuge in Vaikuntha? Or on the golden mountain? Tell me now the truth of this."
Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.5.20.16)
vyāsa uvāca | pūrvaṁ mayā te kathitaṁ maṇidvīpaṁ manoharam | krīḍāsthānaṁ sadā devyā vallabhaṁ paramaṁ smṛtam
Vyasa said: "I have already told you before of the charming Manidvipa, remembered as the Goddess's ever-beloved and supreme place of play."
Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.5.20.17)
yatra brahmā hariḥ sthāṇuḥ strībhāvaṁ te prapedire | puruṣatvaṁ punaḥ prāpya svāni kāryāṇi cakrire
"There, Brahma, Hari, and Sthanu once took on female form; and having regained their masculine nature again, they carried out their own respective tasks."
Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.5.20.18)
yaḥ sudhāsindhumadhye'sti dvīpaḥ paramaśobhanaḥ | nānārūpaiḥ sadā tatra vihāraṁ kurute'mbikā
"That island, of supreme beauty, lies in the midst of the ocean of nectar; there Ambika ever sports about, assuming manifold forms."
Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.5.20.19)
stutā sampūjitā devaiḥ sā tatraiva gatā śivā | yatra saṅkrīḍate nityaṁ māyāśaktiḥ sanātanī
"Praised and worshipped by the gods, that auspicious one went right there, to that very place where the eternal power of Maya ever plays."
Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.5.20.20)
devāstāṁ nirgatāṁ vīkṣya devīṁ sarveśvarīṁ tathā | ravivaṁśodbhavaṁ cakrurbhūmipālaṁ mahābalam
Seeing that Goddess, the Mistress of all, thus depart, the gods then made a mighty king, born of the solar dynasty, the protector of the earth.
Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.5.20.21)
ayodhyādhipatiṁ vīraṁ śatrughnaṁ nāma pārthivam | sarvalakṣaṇasampannaṁ mahiṣasyāsane śubhe
They installed upon Mahisha's own auspicious throne the heroic lord of Ayodhya, a king named Shatrughna, endowed with every auspicious mark.
Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.5.20.22)
dattvā rājyaṁ tadā tasmai devā indrapurogamāḥ | svakīyairvāhanaiḥ sarve jagmuḥ svānyālayāni te
Having thus bestowed the kingdom upon him, the gods, with Indra at their head, all departed upon their own respective vehicles to their own abodes.
Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.5.20.23)
gateṣu teṣu deveṣu pṛthivyāṁ pṛthivīpate | dharmarājyaṁ babhūvātha prajāśca sukhitāstathā
When the gods had thus departed, O lord of the earth, a righteous kingdom then arose upon the earth, and its subjects became happy.
Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.5.20.24)

Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.5.20.25)
gāvaśca kṣīrasampanā ghaṭodhnyaḥ kāmadā nṛṇām | nadyaḥ sumārgagāḥ svacchāḥ śītodāḥ khagasaṁyutāḥ
The cows were rich with milk, their udders full as pitchers, granting all desires to men; the rivers flowed in fair channels, clear, cool-watered, and thronged with birds.
Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.5.20.26)
brāhmaṇā vedatattvāśca yajñakarmaratāstathā | kṣatriyā dharmasaṁyuktā dānādhyayanatatparāḥ
The brahmins were versed in the truths of the Veda, and devoted to sacrificial rites; the kshatriyas were joined with dharma, intent upon charity and study.
Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.5.20.27)
śastravidyāratā nityaṁ prajārakṣaṇatatparāḥ | nyāyadaṇḍadharāḥ sarve rājānaḥ śamasaṁyutāḥ
Ever devoted to the science of arms, intent upon the protection of their subjects, all the kings wielded the rod of justice righteously, and were endowed with tranquility.
Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.5.20.28)
avirodhastu bhūtānāṁ sarveṣāṁ sambabhūva ha | ākarā dhanadā nṛṇāṁ vrajā goyūthasaṁyutāḥ
There arose harmony among all beings, without exception; the mines yielded wealth to men, and the cattle-pens were filled with herds of cows.
Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.5.20.29)
brāhmaṇāḥ kṣatriyā vaiśyāḥ śūdrāśca nṛpasattama | devībhaktiparāḥ sarve sambabhūvurdharātale
Brahmins, kshatriyas, vaishyas, and shudras, O best of kings, all became devoted to the worship of the Goddess upon the face of the earth.
Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.5.20.30)
sarvatra yajñayūpāśca maṇḍapāśca manoharāḥ | makhaiḥ pūrṇā dharāścāsan brāhmaṇaiḥ kṣatriyaiḥ kṛtaiḥ
Everywhere there were sacrificial posts and charming pavilions; the earth was filled with the sacrifices performed by brahmins and kshatriyas.
Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.5.20.31)
pativratadharā nāryaḥ suśīlāḥ satyasaṁyutāḥ | pitṛbhaktiparāḥ putrā āsandharmaparāyaṇāḥ
Women held to the vow of devotion to their husbands, of good conduct and truthfulness; sons were devoted to their fathers, and given wholly to dharma.
Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.5.20.32)
na pākhaṇḍaṁ na vādharmaḥ kutrāpi pṛthivītale | vedavādā śāstravādā nānye vādāstathābhavan
There was no heresy, no false dharma anywhere upon the earth; only the doctrines of the Veda and the scriptures prevailed, no other doctrines existed.
Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.5.20.33)
kalaho naiva keṣāñcinna dainyaṁ nāśubhā matiḥ | sarvatra sukhino lokāḥ kāle ca maraṇaṁ tathā
There was quarreling among none, no misery, no evil intent; people everywhere were happy, and death, too, came only in its proper time.
Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.5.20.34)
suhṛdāṁ na viyogaśca nāpadaśca kadācana | nānāvṛṣṭirna durbhikṣaṁ na mārī duḥkhadā nṛṇām
There was no separation from loved ones, nor calamity of any kind whatsoever; there was no excessive rain, no famine, no plague to bring sorrow to men.
Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.5.20.35)
na rogo na ca mātsaryaṁ na virodhaḥ parasparam | sarvatra sukhasampannā narā nāryaḥ sukhānvitāḥ
There was no disease, no envy, no mutual hostility; men and women everywhere were endowed with happiness and filled with joy.
Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.5.20.36)
krīḍanti mānavāḥ sarve svarge devagaṇā iva | na caurā na ca pākhaṇḍā vañcakā dambhakāstathā
All human beings sported about as though they were the hosts of gods in heaven; there were no thieves, no heretics, no deceivers, and no hypocrites.
Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.5.20.37)
piśunā lampaṭāḥ stabdhā na babhūvustadā nṛpa | na vedadveṣiṇaḥ pāpā mānavāḥ pṛthivīpate
There were then no slanderers, no lechers, no arrogant men, O king; nor were there sinful men who hated the Veda, O lord of the earth.
Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.5.20.38)
sarvadharmaratā nityaṁ dvijasevāparāyaṇāḥ | tridhātvātsṛṣṭidharmasya trividhā brāhmaṇāstataḥ
All were ever devoted to dharma, intent upon serving the twice-born; and, on account of the threefold nature of the dharma of creation, the brahmins were of three kinds:
Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.5.20.39)
sāttvikā rājasāścaiva tāmasāśca tathāpare | sarve vedavido dakṣāḥ sāttvikāḥ sattvavṛttayaḥ
sattvic, rajasic, and likewise tamasic. All were skilled knowers of the Veda; the sattvic ones lived by a mode of pure being.
Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.5.20.40)
pratigrahavihīnāśca dayādamaparāyaṇāḥ | yajñāste sāttvikairannaiḥ kurvāṇā dharmatatparāḥ
Devoid of accepting gifts, devoted to compassion and self-restraint, they performed their sacrifices with pure foods, intent upon dharma —
Verse 41 (devibhagavatam.5.20.41)
puroḍāśavidhānaiśca paśubhirna kadācana | dānamadhyayanañcaiva yajanaṁ tu tṛtīyakam
— using rice-cake offerings according to rite, never with animal victims. Giving gifts, study, and sacrifice — this made up their three occupations.
Verse 42 (devibhagavatam.5.20.42)
trikarmarasikāste vai sāttvikā brāhmaṇā nṛpa | rājasā vedavidvāṁsaḥ kṣatriyāṇāṁ purohitāḥ
Delighting in these three duties, such were the sattvic brahmins, O king. The rajasic brahmins, learned in the Veda, served as priests to the kshatriyas.
Verse 43 (devibhagavatam.5.20.43)
ṣaṭkarmaniratā sarve vidhivanmāṁsabhakṣakāḥ | yajanaṁ yājanaṁ dānaṁ tathaiva ca pratigrahaḥ
All were devoted to the six duties, and, according to rite, ate meat as prescribed. Performing sacrifice, officiating at others' sacrifices, giving gifts, and accepting gifts —
Verse 44 (devibhagavatam.5.20.44)
adhyayanaṁ tu vedānāṁ tathaivādhyāpanaṁ tu ṣaṭ | tāmasāḥ krodhasaṁyuktā rāgadveṣaparāḥ punaḥ
— studying the Vedas, and likewise teaching them: these were their six duties. The tamasic brahmins, on the other hand, were prone to anger, given to passion and hatred,
Verse 45 (devibhagavatam.5.20.45)
rājñāṁ karmakarā nityaṁ kiñcidadhyayane ratāḥ | mahiṣe nihate sarve sukhino vedatatparāḥ
and served ever as functionaries of kings, and were devoted only a little to study. With Mahisha slain, all were happy and devoted to the Veda.
Verse 46 (devibhagavatam.5.20.46)
babhūvurvrataniṣṇātā dānadharmaparāstathā | kṣatriyāḥ pālane yuktā vaiśyā vaṇijavṛttayaḥ
They became accomplished in their vows, and devoted to charity and dharma; the kshatriyas were occupied with governance, and the vaishyas lived by the occupation of trade.
Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.5.20.47)
kṛṣivāṇijyagorakṣākusīdavṛttayaḥ pare | evaṁ pramudito loko mahiṣe vinipātite
Others lived by farming, commerce, cattle-rearing, and moneylending. Thus the world rejoiced greatly, with Mahisha having been struck down.
Verse 48 (devibhagavatam.5.20.48)
anudvegaḥ prajānāṁ vai sambabhūva dhanāgamaḥ | bahukṣīrā śubhā gāvo nadyaścaiva bahūdakāḥ
The people were free from anxiety, and wealth flowed to them; the cows were auspicious and rich in milk, and the rivers ran full with abundant water.
Verse 49 (devibhagavatam.5.20.49)
vṛkṣā bahuphalāścāsanmānavā rogavarjitāḥ | nādhayo netayaḥ kvāpi prajānāṁ duḥkhadāyakāḥ
The trees bore abundant fruit, and human beings were free from disease; there was, anywhere, neither mental anguish nor physical affliction to cause sorrow to the people.
Verse 50 (devibhagavatam.5.20.50)
na nidhanamupayānti prāṇinaste'pyakāle sakalavibhavayuktā rogahīnāḥ sadaiva | nigamavihitadharme tatparāścaṇḍikāyā ścaraṇasarasijānāṁ sevane dattacittāḥ
Living beings did not meet death out of season; endowed always with every kind of prosperity and free from disease, they remained devoted to the dharma laid down in the scriptures, their minds set upon the service of Chandika's lotus feet.
