sandhiyogo na cātrāsti khale sandhirnirarthakaḥ | sarvathā sādhubhiḥ kāryaṁ vicārya ca punaḥ punaḥ

'There is no possibility of an alliance here — a treaty with a wicked one is meaningless. In every way, this matter should be undertaken by the good only after repeated deliberation.'

iṅgitajñāśca niḥsaṅgā niḥspṛhāḥ satyavādinaḥ | senābhiyogaṁ prasthānaṁ balasaṅkhyāṁ yathārthataḥ

vidheyā vidhivattajjñaisteṣu kāryapareṣu ca | anyathā vihitaṁ kāryaṁ viparītaphalapradam

'It must be carried out properly, by those who know this business and are devoted to the task — for a deed done otherwise yields the very opposite of its intended result.'

Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.5.4.18)

preṣayāmāsa devendraḥ parijñānāya pārthiva | dūtastu tvarito gatvā samāgamya surādhipam

sarvajño'si samutpanne kārye tvaṁ gatiradya naḥ | dānavo mahiṣo nāma mahāvīryo madānvitaḥ

'You are all-knowing; you alone are our recourse today in this matter that has arisen. There is a danava named Mahisha, of great valor, filled with pride —'

Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.5.4.24)

yoddhukāmaḥ samāyāti bahubhirdānavairvṛtaḥ | tatra pratikriyā kāryā tvayā mantravidādhunā

'Just as Shukra is theirs, so are you mine, O well-restrained one, the remover of my obstacles.' Vyasa said: Hearing this, Brihaspati spoke to Indra —

Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.5.4.26)

vicintya manasā kāmaṁ kāryasādhanatatparaḥ | gururuvāca | svastho bhava surendra tvaṁ dhairyamālambya māriṣa

— having deliberated well within his mind, intent upon accomplishing the task, the guru said: 'Be composed, O lord of gods; take hold of patience, O honored one.'

Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.5.4.27)

udyamaḥ sarvathā kāryo yathāpauruṣamātmanaḥ | munayo'pi hi muktyarthamudyamaikaratāḥ sadā

na tatra dūṣaṇaṁ tasya daivādhīne śarīriṇi | kāryasiddhirna sainye'sti na mantre na ca mantraṇe

'— there is no fault in that, for the embodied being remains subject to fate. Success in an undertaking lies neither in the army alone, nor in counsel, nor in deliberation alone —'

Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.5.4.40)

tato vivekaḥ kartavyo bhavitavye surādhipa | prārabdhakarmaṇāṁ nāśo nābhogāllakṣyate kila
