The Daitya Army Musters

Chapter 2All chaptersChapter 4

Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.5.3.1)

vyāsa uvāca | evaṁ sa mahiṣo nāma dānavo varadarpitaḥ | prāpya rājyaṁ jagatsarvaṁ vaśe cakre mahābalaḥ

Vyasa said: Thus that danava named Mahisha, intoxicated with his boon, having obtained the kingdom, that mighty one brought the entire world under his sway.

Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.5.3.2)

pṛthivīṁ pālayāmāsa sāgarāntāṁ bhujārjitām | ekacchatrāṁ nirātaṅkāṁ vairivargavivarjitām

He ruled the earth, bounded by the ocean, won by his own arm — a realm under a single umbrella, free of threat, and empty of any body of foes.

Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.5.3.3)

senānīścikṣurastasya mahāvīryo madotkaṭaḥ | dhanādhyakṣastathā tāmraḥ senāyutasamāvṛtaḥ

His army-commander was Chikshura, of great valor and drunk with pride; and Tamra was his treasurer, ever surrounded by ten thousand troops.

Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.5.3.4)

asilomā tathodarko biḍālākhyaśca bāṣkalaḥ | trinetro'tha tathā kālabandhako baladarpitaḥ

So too Asiloma, and Udarka, and one called Bidala, and Bashkala, and Trinetra, and Kalabandhaka — all of them proud in the pride of strength.

Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.5.3.5)

ete sainyayutāḥ sarve dānavā medinīṁ tadā | āvṛtya saṁsthitāḥ kāmamṛddhāṁ sāgaramekhalām

All these danavas, together with their armies, then closed in and occupied the earth, girdled by the ocean and rich with every abundance.

Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.5.3.6)

karadāśca kṛtāḥ sarve bhūmipālāḥ purātanāḥ | nihatā ye balodagrāḥ kṣātradharmavyavasthitāḥ

All the ancient kings of the earth were made tributary; those who, mighty in strength, stood firm in the warrior's dharma, were struck down.

Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.5.3.7)

brāhmaṇā vaśagā jātā yajñabhāgasamarpakāḥ | mahiṣasya mahārāja nikhile kṣitimaṇḍale

O great king, the brahmins of the entire circle of the earth came under Mahisha's sway, and began offering to him the sacrificial portion once given to the gods.

Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.5.3.8)

ekātapatraṁ tadrājyaṁ kṛtvā sa mahiṣāsuraḥ | svargaṁ jetuṁ manaścakre varadānena garvitaḥ

Having made that realm his own under a single umbrella, Mahishasura, swollen with pride from his boon, now set his mind on conquering heaven.

Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.5.3.9)

praṇidhiṁ preṣayāmāsa hayāristu śacīpatim | sa sandeśaharaṁ śīghramāhūyovāca daityarāṭ

Hayari, the husband of Shachi — Indra — sent forth a spy; and the daitya-king Mahisha, swiftly summoning that message-bearer, spoke to him —

Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.5.3.10)

gaccha vīra mahābāho dūtatvaṁ kuru me'nagha | brūhi śakraṁ divaṁ gatvā niḥśaṅkaḥ surasannidhau

'Go, O hero, O mighty-armed and sinless one — be my envoy. Go to heaven and, fearless before the gods, speak to Shakra —'

Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.5.3.11)

muñca svargaṁ sahasrākṣa yatheṣṭaṁ gaccha mā ciram | sevāṁ vā kuru deveśa mahiṣasya mahātmanaḥ

'— abandon heaven, O thousand-eyed one; go wherever you please without delay. Or else, O lord of gods, enter the service of the great-souled Mahisha.'

Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.5.3.12)

sa tvāṁ saṁrakṣayennūnaṁ rājā śaraṇamāgatam | tasmāttvaṁ śaraṇaṁ yāhi mahiṣasya śacīpate

'That king will surely grant you protection once you come to him for refuge. Therefore, O husband of Shachi, go and take refuge with Mahisha.'

Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.5.3.13)

nocedvajraṁ gahāṇāśu yuddhāya balasūdana | pūrvairjito'si cāsmākaṁ jānāmi tava pauruṣam

'Otherwise, O slayer of Bala, take up your thunderbolt at once for battle — you have already been conquered by our forefathers; I know full well what your manhood is worth.'

Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.5.3.14)

ahalyājāra vijñātaṁ balaṁ te surasaṅghapa | yudhyasva vraja vā kāmaṁ yatra te ramate manaḥ

'O paramour of Ahalya, O guardian of the assembly of gods, your strength is well known. Fight, then — or go wherever your heart pleases.'

Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.5.3.15)

vyāsa uvāca | tacchutvā vacanaṁ tasya śakraḥ krodhasamanvitaḥ | uvāca taṁ nṛpaśreṣṭha smitapūrvaṁ vacastadā

Vyasa said: Hearing those words, O best of kings, Shakra was filled with anger, and, smiling first, then spoke to him thus —

Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.5.3.16)

na jāne'haṁ sumandātman yatastvaṁ madadarpitaḥ | cikitsāṁ saṅkariṣyāmi rogasyāsya prabhostava

'I do not know, O dull-witted one, how your master has become so drunk with pride. I shall now administer the cure for this disease of your lord's.'

Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.5.3.17)

ataḥ paraṁ kariṣyāmi mūlasyāsya nimūlanam | gaccha dūta tathā brūhi tasyāgre mama bhāṣitam

'Henceforth I shall tear him out by the very root. Go, O messenger, and speak these words of mine before him —'

Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.5.3.18)

śiṣṭairdūtā na hantavyāstasmāttvāṁ visṛjāmyaham | yuddhecchā cetsamāgaccha tvarito mahiṣīsuta

'The virtuous do not kill messengers — that is why I let you go. If you desire war, O son of the buffalo-queen, come quickly.'

Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.5.3.19)

hayāre tvadbalaṁ jñātaṁ tṛṇādastvaṁ jaḍākṛtiḥ | śṛṅgayoste kariṣyāmi sudṛḍhaṁ ca śarāsanam

'Your strength is well known, O grass-eater, O dull and sluggish shape! I shall make a sturdy bow out of your two horns.'

Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.5.3.20)

darpaḥ śṛṅgabalātte'sti viditaṁ kāraṇaṁ mayā | viṣāṇe te paricchidya saṁhariṣyāmi tad balam

'Your pride comes only from the strength of your horns — I know the cause well. I shall sever both your horns and destroy that strength.'

Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.5.3.21)

'That strength which has made you so proud, O vilest of buffaloes — in it you are skilled only at butting, not at real war.'

Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.5.3.22)

vyāsa uvāca | ityukto'sau surendreṇa sa dūtastvarito gataḥ | jagāma mahiṣaṁ mattaṁ praṇamya pratyuvāca ha

Vyasa said: Thus addressed by the lord of the gods, that messenger swiftly departed; he went to intoxicated Mahisha, bowed to him, and spoke in reply.

Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.5.3.23)

dūta uvāca | rājandevādhipaḥ kāmaṁ na tvāṁ vigaṇayatyasau | manyate svabalaṁ pūrṇaṁ devasainyasamāvṛtaḥ

The messenger said: O king, the lord of the gods truly counts you as nothing at all; surrounded by his army of gods, he considers his own strength complete.

Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.5.3.24)

yaduktaṁ tena mūrkheṇa kathamanyad bravīmyaham | priyaṁ satyaṁ ca vaktavyaṁ bhṛtyena purataḥ prabhoḥ

What that fool has said — what else could I say beyond it? A servant must speak before his master only what is pleasant and true —

Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.5.3.25)

priyaṁ satyaṁ ca vaktavyaṁ prabhoragre śubhecchunā | iti nītirmahārāja jāgarti śubhakāriṇī

— one who wishes well must speak, before his master, only what is pleasant and true. This, O great king, is the auspicious rule of conduct that ever holds.

Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.5.3.26)

If only what is pleasant is spoken, your purpose will not be served; and yet one who wishes well should never speak harsh words either.

Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.5.3.27)

yathā ripumukhādvācaḥ prasaranti viṣopamāḥ | tathā bhṛtyamukhānnātha niḥsaranti kathaṁ giraḥ

Just as poison-like words issue from an enemy's mouth, O lord, how could such words ever come from the mouth of a servant?

Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.5.3.28)

yādṛśānīha vākyāni tenoktāni mahīpate | tādṛśāni na me jihvā vaktumarhati karhicit

O lord of the earth, my tongue could never be capable of speaking such words as he has spoken.

Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.5.3.29)

vyāsa uvāca | tacchrutvā vacanaṁ tasya hetugarbhaṁ tṛṇāśanaḥ | bhṛśaṁ kopaparītātmā babhūva mahiṣāsuraḥ

Vyasa said: Hearing those pointed words of his, that grass-eating Mahishasura became utterly overwhelmed with fury.

Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.5.3.30)

samāhūyābravīddaityānkrodhasaṁraktalocanaḥ | lāṅgūlaṁ pṛṣṭhadeśe ca kṛtvā mūtraṁ parityajan

With eyes red with rage, his tail raised over his back, and voiding urine, he summoned the daityas and spoke.

Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.5.3.31)

bho bho daityāḥ surendro'sau yuddhakāmo'sti sarvathā | balodyogaṁ kurudhvaṁ vai jetavyo'sau surādhamaḥ

'Ho, ho, O daityas! That lord of the gods is set utterly on war. Muster your strength — that vile lord of gods must indeed be conquered.'

Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.5.3.32)

'Who indeed could be a hero before me, even if there were millions such as him? Alone I fear nothing — today I shall utterly destroy them all.'

Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.5.3.33)

śaraḥ śānteṣvasau nūnaṁ tapasviṣu balādhikaḥ | balakartā hi kuhako lampaṭaḥ paradārahṛt

'He is surely mighty only against the peaceful and against ascetics — that so-called strong one is nothing but a trickster, a lecher, and an abductor of others' wives.'

Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.5.3.34)

apsarobalasammattastapovighnakaraḥ khalaḥ | chidrapraharaṇaḥ pāpo nityaṁ viśvāsaghātakaḥ

'Maddened by the power of apsaras, a wicked disturber of others' austerities, a sinner who strikes wherever he finds a weakness, ever a betrayer of trust —'

Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.5.3.35)

namucirnihato yena kṛtvā sandhiṁ durātmanā | śapathānvividhānādau kṛtvā bhītena chadmanā

'— he by whom Namuchi was slain: that evil-souled one who, having first made a treaty and, out of fear, sworn various oaths, then killed him through deceit —'

Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.5.3.36)

viṣṇustu kapaṭācāryaḥ kuhakaḥ śapathākaraḥ | nānārūpadharaḥ kāmaṁ balakṛddambhapaṇḍitaḥ

'— and Vishnu is a master of deceit, a trickster, a taker of false oaths, one who assumes many forms at will, an expert at building power through cunning show —'

Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.5.3.37)

kṛtvā kolākṛtiṁ yena hiraṇyākṣo nipātitaḥ | hiraṇyakaśipuryena nṛsiṁhena ca ghātitaḥ

'— he by whom, taking the form of a boar, Hiranyaksha was struck down, and by whom, as Narasimha, Hiranyakashipu was slain.'

Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.5.3.38)

nāhaṁ tadvaśago nūnaṁ bhaveyaṁ danunandanāḥ | viśvāsaṁ naiva gacchāmi devānāṁ kutra karhicit

'O sons of Danu, I shall never fall under his sway — I place no trust in the gods, anywhere, at any time.'

Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.5.3.39)

kiṁ kariṣyati me viṣṇurindro vā balavattaraḥ | rudro vāpi na me śaktaḥ pratikartuṁ raṇāṅgaṇe

'What can Vishnu do to me, or even mightier Indra? Not even Rudra is capable of standing against me on the field of battle.'

Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.5.3.40)

triviṣṭapaṁ grahīṣyāmi jitvendraṁ varuṇaṁ yamam | dhanadaṁ pāvakaṁ caiva candrasūryau vijitya ca

'I shall seize heaven, conquering Indra, Varuna, and Yama, and vanquishing Kubera and Agni, and the Moon and Sun as well.'

Verse 41 (devibhagavatam.5.3.41)

yajñabhāgabhujaḥ sarve bhaviṣyāmo'dya somapāḥ | jitvā devasamūhañca vihariṣyāmi dānavaiḥ

'From today, all of us shall enjoy the sacrificial portions and drink the soma; having conquered the whole host of the gods, I shall sport among the danavas.'

Verse 42 (devibhagavatam.5.3.42)

na me bhayaṁ surebhyaśca varadānena dānavāḥ | maraṇaṁ na narebhyaśca nārī kiṁ me kariṣyati

'O danavas, by the power of my boon I have no fear of the gods; death shall not come to me from men — and what, indeed, could a mere woman do to me?'

pātālaparvatebhyaśca samāhūya varānvarān | dānavānmama sainyeśānkurvantu tvaritāścarāḥ

'Let swift messengers be sent at once to summon the finest of the danavas from the netherworlds and the mountains, and let them be made commanders of my army.'

Verse 44 (devibhagavatam.5.3.44)

eko'haṁ sarvadeveśānvijetuṁ dānavāḥ kṣamaḥ | śobhārthaṁ vaḥ samāhūya nayāmi surasaṅgame

'O danavas, I alone am capable of conquering all the lords of the gods; it is only for your glory that I summon you and lead you into battle with them.'

śṛṅgābhyāṁ ca khurābhyāṁ ca haniṣye'haṁ surānkila | na me bhayaṁ surebhyaśca varadānaprabhāvataḥ

avadhyo'haṁ suragaṇairasurairmānavaistathā | tasmātsajjā bhavantvadya devalokajayāya vai

'I am unslayable by the hosts of gods, by asuras, and by men alike; therefore let everyone be ready today for the conquest of the world of the gods.'

Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.5.3.47)
