Nahusha's Fall from Heaven

Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.6.9.1)

व्यास उवाच । तां वीक्ष्य विपुलापाङ्गीं रहः शोकसमन्विताम् । आखण्डलः प्रियां भार्यां विस्मितश्चाब्रवीत्तदा

vyāsa uvāca | tāṁ vīkṣya vipulāpāṅgīṁ rahaḥ śokasamanvitām | ākhaṇḍalaḥ priyāṁ bhāryāṁ vismitaścābravīttadā

Vyasa said: Seeing his beloved wife, wide-eyed and sorrowful there in that secluded place, Akhandala (Indra), astonished, then spoke to her.

Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.6.9.2)

कथमत्रागता कान्ते कथं ज्ञातस्त्वया ह्यहम् । दुर्ज्ञेयः सर्वभूतानां संस्थितोऽस्मि शुभानने

kathamatrāgatā kānte kathaṁ jñātastvayā hyaham | durjñeyaḥ sarvabhūtānāṁ saṁsthito'smi śubhānane

'How have you come here, my beloved? How did you discover me at all? O fair-faced one, I remain here, unknowable to every living being.'

Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.6.9.3)

शच्युवाच । देव देव्याः प्रसादेन ज्ञातोऽस्यद्य भवानिह । पुनस्तस्याः प्रसादेन प्राप्तास्मि त्वां दिवस्पते

śacyuvāca | deva devyāḥ prasādena jñāto'syadya bhavāniha | punastasyāḥ prasādena prāptāsmi tvāṁ divaspate

Shachi said: 'O lord, it was by the grace of the Goddess that you became known to me today; and by her grace alone, O lord of heaven, I have found you once more.'

Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.6.9.4)

नहुषो नाम राजर्षिः स्थापितो भवदासने । त्रिदशैर्मुनिभिश्चैव स मां बाधति नित्यशः

nahuṣo nāma rājarṣiḥ sthāpito bhavadāsane | tridaśairmunibhiścaiva sa māṁ bādhati nityaśaḥ

'A royal sage named Nahusha has been placed by the gods and sages upon your very throne; he harasses me continually.'

Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.6.9.5)

पतिं मां कुरु चार्वङ्गिः तुरासाहं सुराधिपम् । एवं वदति मां पाप्मा किं करोमि बलार्दन

patiṁ māṁ kuru cārvaṅgiḥ turāsāhaṁ surādhipam | evaṁ vadati māṁ pāpmā kiṁ karomi balārdana

'"Take me as your husband, O lovely one — I am now Turashad, lord of the gods" — so speaks that sinner to me. What am I to do, O crusher of Bala?'

Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.6.9.6)

इन्द्र उवाच । कालाकाङ्क्षी वरारोहे संस्थितोऽस्मि यदृच्छया । तथा त्वमपि कल्याणि सुस्थिरं स्वमनः कुरु

indra uvāca | kālākāṅkṣī varārohe saṁsthito'smi yadṛcchayā | tathā tvamapi kalyāṇi susthiraṁ svamanaḥ kuru

Indra said: 'O fair one, I remain here, waiting for the right moment, as circumstance allows; you too, O gracious lady, keep your own mind firm and steady.'

Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.6.9.7)

व्यास उवाच । इत्युक्ता तेन सा देवी पतिनातिप्रशंसिना । निःश्वसन्त्याह तं शक्रं वेपमानातिदुःखिता

vyāsa uvāca | ityuktā tena sā devī patinātipraśaṁsinā | niḥśvasantyāha taṁ śakraṁ vepamānātiduḥkhitā

Vyasa said: Thus addressed by her husband, who praised her so highly, that goddess, sighing, trembling, and deeply sorrowful, spoke to Shakra.

Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.6.9.8)

कथं तिष्ठे महाभाग पापात्मा मां वशानुगाम् । करिष्यति मदोन्मत्तो वरदानेन गर्वितः

kathaṁ tiṣṭhe mahābhāga pāpātmā māṁ vaśānugām | kariṣyati madonmatto varadānena garvitaḥ

'How am I to endure this, O greatly fortunate one? That sinful soul, intoxicated and proud from his boon, means to bring me under his own control.'

Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.6.9.9)

देवाश्च मुनयः सर्वे मामूचुस्तद्भयाकुलाः । तं भजस्व वरारोहे देवराजं स्मरातुरम्

devāśca munayaḥ sarve māmūcustadbhayākulāḥ | taṁ bhajasva varārohe devarājaṁ smarāturam

'And the gods, along with all the sages, troubled by fear of him, said to me: "Accept him, O fair one, this king of the gods, so tormented by desire for you."'

Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.6.9.10)

बृहस्पतिस्तु शत्रुघ्न वाडवो बलवर्जितः । कथं मां रक्षितुं शक्तो भवेद्देवानुगः सदा

bṛhaspatistu śatrughna vāḍavo balavarjitaḥ | kathaṁ māṁ rakṣituṁ śakto bhaveddevānugaḥ sadā

'But how, O slayer of enemies, could Brihaspati, deprived of power and always subordinate to the gods, be able to protect me?'

Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.6.9.11)

तस्माच्चिन्तास्ति महती नार्यहं वशवर्तिनी । अनाथा किं करिष्यामि विपरीते विधौ विभो

tasmāccintāsti mahatī nāryahaṁ vaśavartinī | anāthā kiṁ kariṣyāmi viparīte vidhau vibho

'Therefore great anxiety weighs on me — a woman, dependent on another's will. Helpless as I am, O lord, what shall I do, when fate itself has turned against me?'

Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.6.9.12)

नार्यस्म्यहं न कुलटा त्वच्चित्तातिपतिव्रता । नास्ति मे शरणं तत्र यो मां रक्षति दुःखिताम्

nāryasmyahaṁ na kulaṭā tvaccittātipativratā | nāsti me śaraṇaṁ tatra yo māṁ rakṣati duḥkhitām

'I am a faithful woman, not a wanton one, utterly devoted to you in my heart; yet I have nowhere to turn, no one to shelter me in this distress.'

Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.6.9.13)

इन्द्र उवाच । उपायं प्रब्रवीम्यद्य तं कुरुष्व वरानने । शीलं ते दुःखिते काले परित्रातं भविष्यति

indra uvāca | upāyaṁ prabravīmyadya taṁ kuruṣva varānane | śīlaṁ te duḥkhite kāle paritrātaṁ bhaviṣyati

Indra said: 'I shall tell you a means today, O fair-faced one — follow it. In this time of sorrow, your own virtue shall be your protection.'

Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.6.9.14)

परेण रक्षिता नारी न भवेच्च पतिव्रता । उपायैः कोटिभिः कामभिन्नचित्तातिचञ्चला

pareṇa rakṣitā nārī na bhavecca pativratā | upāyaiḥ koṭibhiḥ kāmabhinnacittāticañcalā

'A woman protected by another does not thereby become truly devoted to her husband; whose mind, broken by desire, remains fickle beyond measure, however many precautions one takes.'

Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.6.9.15)

शीलमेव हि नारीणां सदा रक्षति पापतः । तस्मात्त्वं शीलमास्थाय स्थिरा भव शुचिस्मिते

śīlameva hi nārīṇāṁ sadā rakṣati pāpataḥ | tasmāttvaṁ śīlamāsthāya sthirā bhava śucismite

'It is virtue alone that ever safeguards women from sin; therefore, holding fast to your own virtue, remain steadfast, O pure-smiling one.'

Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.6.9.16)

यदा त्वां नहुषो राजा बलादाकर्षयेत्खलः । तदा त्वं समयं कृत्वा गजं वञ्चय भूपतिम्

yadā tvāṁ nahuṣo rājā balādākarṣayetkhalaḥ | tadā tvaṁ samayaṁ kṛtvā gajaṁ vañcaya bhūpatim

'When the wicked King Nahusha tries to draw you to him by force, then strike a bargain with him and beguile the king away from his usual elephant mount.'

Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.6.9.17)

एकान्ते तत्समीपे त्वं गत्वा वद मदालसे । ऋषियानेन दिव्येन मामुपैहि जगत्पते

ekānte tatsamīpe tvaṁ gatvā vada madālase | ṛṣiyānena divyena māmupaihi jagatpate

'Going to him alone, in private, say to him, O languid-eyed one: "Come to me, O lord of the world, borne upon a divine vehicle carried by sages."'

Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.6.9.18)

एवं तव वशे प्रीता भविष्यामीति मे ततम् । इति तं वद सुश्रोणि तदा तु परिमोहितः

evaṁ tava vaśe prītā bhaviṣyāmīti me tatam | iti taṁ vada suśroṇi tadā tu parimohitaḥ

'"So pleased, I shall then become yours" — this is my own firm resolve. Say just this to him, O fair one; then, utterly deluded —'

Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.6.9.19)

कामान्धः स मुनीन् याने योजयिष्यति पार्थिवः । अवश्यं तापसो भूपं शापदग्धं करिष्यति

kāmāndhaḥ sa munīn yāne yojayiṣyati pārthivaḥ | avaśyaṁ tāpaso bhūpaṁ śāpadagdhaṁ kariṣyati

'— that king, blinded by lust, shall harness sages to draw his vehicle; and some ascetic shall surely reduce that king to ashes with his curse.'

Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.6.9.20)

साहाय्यं जगदम्बा ते करिष्यति न संशयः । जगदम्बापदस्मर्तुः सङ्कटं न कदाचन

sāhāyyaṁ jagadambā te kariṣyati na saṁśayaḥ | jagadambāpadasmartuḥ saṅkaṭaṁ na kadācana

'The Mother of the universe shall surely come to your aid, without doubt; for one who calls upon the world-mother in a crisis, no danger ever lasts.'

Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.6.9.21)

यदि जायेत तच्चापि ज्ञेयं तत्स्वस्तये किल । तस्मात्सर्वप्रयत्नेन मणिद्वीपाधिवासिनीम्

yadi jāyeta taccāpi jñeyaṁ tatsvastaye kila | tasmātsarvaprayatnena maṇidvīpādhivāsinīm

'And should any hardship arise even so, know that it too works ultimately toward your welfare. Therefore, with every effort, worship the goddess who dwells on Manidvipa —'

Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.6.9.22)

भज त्वं भुवनेशानीं गुरुवाक्यानुसारतः । व्यास उवाच । इत्याख्याता शची तेन जगाम नहुषं प्रति

bhaja tvaṁ bhuvaneśānīṁ guruvākyānusārataḥ | vyāsa uvāca | ityākhyātā śacī tena jagāma nahuṣaṁ prati

'— the sovereign of the universe, according to the guru's own teaching.' Vyasa said: Thus instructed by him, Shachi went to Nahusha.

Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.6.9.23)

तथेत्युक्त्वातिविश्वस्ता भाविकार्ये कृतोद्यमा । नहुषस्तां समालोक्य मुदितो वाक्यमब्रवीत्

tathetyuktvātiviśvastā bhāvikārye kṛtodyamā | nahuṣastāṁ samālokya mudito vākyamabravīt

Saying 'so be it,' fully resolved and ready for the task ahead, she went; and Nahusha, seeing her, spoke to her with delight.

Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.6.9.24)

स्वागतं सत्यवचनैस्त्वदधीनोऽस्मि कामिनि । दासोऽहं तव सत्येन पालितं वचनं त्वया

svāgataṁ satyavacanaistvadadhīno'smi kāmini | dāso'haṁ tava satyena pālitaṁ vacanaṁ tvayā

Nahusha said: 'Welcome, O desirable one — by these true words of yours, I am now bound to you; I am your servant, for you have kept your promise.'

Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.6.9.25)

यदागता समीपे मे तुष्टोऽस्मि मितभाषिणि । न च व्रीडा त्वया कार्या भक्तं मां भज सुस्मिते

yadāgatā samīpe me tuṣṭo'smi mitabhāṣiṇi | na ca vrīḍā tvayā kāryā bhaktaṁ māṁ bhaja susmite

'Now that you have come to me, I am well satisfied, O measured speaker; feel no shame — accept me, your devoted one, O sweetly smiling lady.'

Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.6.9.26)

कार्यं वद विशालाक्षि करिष्यामि तव प्रियम् । शच्युवाच । सर्वं कृतं त्वया कार्यं मम कृत्रिमवासव

kāryaṁ vada viśālākṣi kariṣyāmi tava priyam | śacyuvāca | sarvaṁ kṛtaṁ tvayā kāryaṁ mama kṛtrimavāsava

'Tell me your wish, O wide-eyed one; I shall do whatever pleases you.' Shachi said: 'Everything has already been accomplished by you, O counterfeit Vasava.'

Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.6.9.27)

मनोरथोऽस्ति मे देव शृणु चित्तेऽधुना विभो । वाञ्छितं कुरु कल्याण त्वद्वशाहमतः परम्

manoratho'sti me deva śṛṇu citte'dhunā vibho | vāñchitaṁ kuru kalyāṇa tvadvaśāhamataḥ param

'I have a desire in my heart, O god; hear it now, O mighty one. Fulfill this wish of mine, O gracious one; thereafter I shall be yours.'

Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.6.9.28)

ब्रवीमि मानसोत्साहं त्वं तं कर्तुमिहार्हसि । नहुष उवाच । कार्यं त्वं ब्रूहि चन्द्रास्ये करोमि तव वाञ्छितम्

bravīmi mānasotsāhaṁ tvaṁ taṁ kartumihārhasi | nahuṣa uvāca | kāryaṁ tvaṁ brūhi candrāsye karomi tava vāñchitam

'I shall tell you the fervent wish of my heart; it is fitting that you grant it here.' Nahusha said: 'Tell me the task, O moon-faced one; I shall accomplish whatever you desire.'

Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.6.9.29)

अलभ्यमपि दास्यामि तुभ्यं सुभ्रु वदस्व माम् । शच्युवाच । कथं ब्रवीमि राजेन्द्र प्रत्ययो नास्ति मे तव

alabhyamapi dāsyāmi tubhyaṁ subhru vadasva mām | śacyuvāca | kathaṁ bravīmi rājendra pratyayo nāsti me tava

'Even what is impossible to obtain, I shall grant you, O fair-browed one; tell me.' Shachi said: 'How can I speak, O king of kings? I have no trust in you.'

Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.6.9.30)

शपथं कुरु राजेन्द्र यत्करोमि प्रियं तव । राजानः सत्यवचसो दुर्लभा एव भूतले

śapathaṁ kuru rājendra yatkaromi priyaṁ tava | rājānaḥ satyavacaso durlabhā eva bhūtale

'Take an oath, O king of kings, that you will do what pleases me; truthful kings are indeed a rare thing to find upon this earth.'

Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.6.9.31)

पश्चाद्ब्रवीम्यहं राजन् ज्ञात्वा सत्येन यन्त्रितम् । कृते चेद्वाञ्छिते भूप सदा ते वशवर्तिनी

paścādbravīmyahaṁ rājan jñātvā satyena yantritam | kṛte cedvāñchite bhūpa sadā te vaśavartinī

'Once I know you are truly bound by your oath, O king, only then shall I speak. And if my wish is granted, O king, I shall remain forever subject to your will.'

Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.6.9.32)

भविष्यामि तुराषाड् वै सत्यमेतद्वचो मम । नहुष उवाच । अवश्यमेव कर्तव्यं वचनं तव सुन्दरि

bhaviṣyāmi turāṣāḍ vai satyametadvaco mama | nahuṣa uvāca | avaśyameva kartavyaṁ vacanaṁ tava sundari

'This is my true word, O Turashad.' Nahusha said: 'Your word shall certainly be fulfilled, O beautiful one.'

Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.6.9.33)

शपामि सुकृतेनाहं यज्ञदानकृतेन वै । शच्युवाच । इन्द्रस्य हरयो वाहा गजश्चैव रथस्तथा

śapāmi sukṛtenāhaṁ yajñadānakṛtena vai | śacyuvāca | indrasya harayo vāhā gajaścaiva rathastathā

'I swear by the merit I have earned through sacrifice and charitable giving.' Shachi said: 'Indra has horses for his mount, and an elephant too, and a chariot —'

Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.6.9.34)

गरुडो वासुदेवस्य यमस्य महिषस्तथा । वृषभः शङ्करस्यापि ब्रह्मणो वरटापतिः

garuḍo vāsudevasya yamasya mahiṣastathā | vṛṣabhaḥ śaṅkarasyāpi brahmaṇo varaṭāpatiḥ

'— Garuda belongs to Vasudeva, the buffalo to Yama; the bull is Shankara's, and the lord of geese, the swan, belongs to Brahma —'

Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.6.9.35)

मयूरः कार्तिकेयस्य गजास्यस्य तु मूषकः । इच्छाम्यहमपूर्वं वै वाहनं ते सुराधिप

mayūraḥ kārtikeyasya gajāsyasya tu mūṣakaḥ | icchāmyahamapūrvaṁ vai vāhanaṁ te surādhipa

'— the peacock belongs to Kartikeya, and the mouse to the elephant-faced Ganesha. I desire for you, O lord of the gods, a vehicle unlike any that has ever existed.'

Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.6.9.36)

यन्न विष्णोर्न रुद्रस्य नासुराणां न रक्षसाम् । वहन्तु त्वां महाराज मुनयः संशितव्रताः

yanna viṣṇorna rudrasya nāsurāṇāṁ na rakṣasām | vahantu tvāṁ mahārāja munayaḥ saṁśitavratāḥ

'— one that belongs to none of Vishnu, Rudra, the asuras, or the rakshasas. Let sages bound by rigorous vows carry you, O great king.'

Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.6.9.37)

सर्वे शिबिकया राजन्नेतद्धि मम वाञ्छितम् । सर्वदेवाधिकं त्वां वै जानामि वसुधाधिप

sarve śibikayā rājannetaddhi mama vāñchitam | sarvadevādhikaṁ tvāṁ vai jānāmi vasudhādhipa

'Let them all bear you in a palanquin, O king — this is indeed my wish; for I know you, O lord of the earth, to be superior to all the gods.'

Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.6.9.38)

तेन ते तेजसो वृद्धिं वाञ्छाम्यहमतन्द्रिता । व्यास उवाच । तस्यास्तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा प्रहस्य ज्ञानदुर्बलः

tena te tejaso vṛddhiṁ vāñchāmyahamatandritā | vyāsa uvāca | tasyāstadvacanaṁ śrutvā prahasya jñānadurbalaḥ

'For that very reason, tirelessly, I wish for the growth of your splendor.' Vyasa said: Hearing these words of hers, he, weak in wisdom, laughed and —

Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.6.9.39)

मोहितस्तु महादेव्या कृतमोहेन तत्क्षणम् । उवाच वचनं भूपः संस्तुवन्वासवप्रियाम्

mohitastu mahādevyā kṛtamohena tatkṣaṇam | uvāca vacanaṁ bhūpaḥ saṁstuvanvāsavapriyām

— at that very instant deluded by the illusion cast by the great Goddess, that king spoke, praising Vasava's beloved wife.

Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.6.9.40)

नहुष उवाच । सत्यमुक्तं त्वया तन्वि वाहनं रुचिरं मम । करिष्यामि सुकेशान्ते वचनं तव सर्वथा

nahuṣa uvāca | satyamuktaṁ tvayā tanvi vāhanaṁ ruciraṁ mama | kariṣyāmi sukeśānte vacanaṁ tava sarvathā

Nahusha said: 'You have spoken the truth, O slender one — a splendid vehicle indeed for me. O lovely-haired one, I shall in every way fulfill your word.'

Verse 41 (devibhagavatam.6.9.41)

न ह्यल्पवीर्यो भवति यो वाहान्कुरुते मुनीन् । अहमारुह्य यानेन त्वामेष्यामि शुचिस्मिते

na hyalpavīryo bhavati yo vāhānkurute munīn | ahamāruhya yānena tvāmeṣyāmi śucismite

'No one of little power could ever make sages themselves his bearers; mounted upon that very vehicle, O pure-smiling one, I shall come to you.'

Verse 42 (devibhagavatam.6.9.42)

सप्तर्षयो मां वक्ष्यन्ति सर्वे देवर्षयस्तथा । समर्थं त्रिषु लोकेषु ज्ञात्वा मां तपसाधिकम्

saptarṣayo māṁ vakṣyanti sarve devarṣayastathā | samarthaṁ triṣu lokeṣu jñātvā māṁ tapasādhikam

'The seven great sages, and all the divine sages too, shall carry me, knowing me to be capable throughout the three worlds and supreme in austerity.'

Verse 43 (devibhagavatam.6.9.43)

व्यास उवाच । इत्युक्त्वा तां सुसन्तुष्टो विससर्ज हरिप्रियाम् । मुनीनाहूय सर्वास्तानित्युवाच स्मरान्वितः

vyāsa uvāca | ityuktvā tāṁ susantuṣṭo visasarja haripriyām | munīnāhūya sarvāstānityuvāca smarānvitaḥ

Vyasa said: Having said this, well satisfied, he let Hari's beloved go; and summoning all the sages, consumed with desire, he spoke to them.

Verse 44 (devibhagavatam.6.9.44)

नहुष उवाच । अहमिन्द्रोऽद्य भो विप्राः सर्वशक्तिसमन्वितः । कार्यमत्र प्रकुर्वन्तु भवन्तो विगतस्मयाः

nahuṣa uvāca | ahamindro'dya bho viprāḥ sarvaśaktisamanvitaḥ | kāryamatra prakurvantu bhavanto vigatasmayāḥ

Nahusha said: 'I am Indra this day, O brahmins, endowed with every power; set aside your pride and perform this task for me.'

Verse 45 (devibhagavatam.6.9.45)

इन्द्रासनं मया प्राप्तं नेन्द्राणी मामुपैति च । आकारिता च मां सूते प्रेमपूर्वमिदं वचः

indrāsanaṁ mayā prāptaṁ nendrāṇī māmupaiti ca | ākāritā ca māṁ sūte premapūrvamidaṁ vacaḥ

'I have obtained the throne of Indra, yet Indrani does not come to me. When summoned, she spoke to me these loving words —'

Verse 46 (devibhagavatam.6.9.46)

मुनियानेन देवेन्द्र मामुपैहि सुराधिप । देवदेव महाराज मत्प्रियं कुरु मानद

muniyānena devendra māmupaihi surādhipa | devadeva mahārāja matpriyaṁ kuru mānada

'"Come to me, O lord of the gods, borne upon a vehicle of sages, O ruler of the gods. O god of gods, great king, do what pleases me, O honored one."'

Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.6.9.47)

एतत्कार्यं मुनिश्रेष्ठा ममात्यन्तं दुरासदम् । भवद्भिस्तु प्रकर्तव्यं सर्वथैव दयालुभिः

etatkāryaṁ muniśreṣṭhā mamātyantaṁ durāsadam | bhavadbhistu prakartavyaṁ sarvathaiva dayālubhiḥ

'This task, O finest of sages, is exceedingly difficult for me on my own; it must, by all means, be undertaken by you, out of your very compassion.'

Verse 48 (devibhagavatam.6.9.48)

मनो दहति मे कामः शक्रपत्न्यां प्रवर्तितम् । भवन्तः शरणं मेऽद्य कुरुध्वं कार्यमद्भुतम्

mano dahati me kāmaḥ śakrapatnyāṁ pravartitam | bhavantaḥ śaraṇaṁ me'dya kurudhvaṁ kāryamadbhutam

'Desire, fixed upon Shakra's wife, is burning my very mind; you are my refuge this day — carry out this extraordinary task.'

Verse 49 (devibhagavatam.6.9.49)

अगस्तिप्रमुखास्तस्य श्रुत्वा वाक्यमसत्करम् । अङ्गीचक्रुश्च भावित्वात्कृपया परमर्षयः

agastipramukhāstasya śrutvā vākyamasatkaram | aṅgīcakruśca bhāvitvātkṛpayā paramarṣayaḥ

The great sages, led by Agasti, hearing his disrespectful words, agreed nonetheless, out of foresight and compassion.

Verse 50 (devibhagavatam.6.9.50)

अङ्गीकृतेऽथ तद्वाक्ये मुनिभिस्तत्त्वदर्शिभिः । मुदं प्राप नृपः कामं पौलोमीकृतमानसः

aṅgīkṛte'tha tadvākye munibhistattvadarśibhiḥ | mudaṁ prāpa nṛpaḥ kāmaṁ paulomīkṛtamānasaḥ

When the truth-perceiving sages had thus accepted his request, the king, his mind wholly fixed on Pauloni through desire, rejoiced.

Verse 51 (devibhagavatam.6.9.51)

आरुह्य शिबिकां रम्यां संस्थितस्त्वरयान्वितः । वाहात्कृत्वा मुनीन्दिव्यान्सर्प सर्पेति चाब्रवीत्

āruhya śibikāṁ ramyāṁ saṁsthitastvarayānvitaḥ | vāhātkṛtvā munīndivyānsarpa sarpeti cābravīt

Mounting a splendid palanquin and settling into it in haste, having made the divine sages his bearers, he cried out, 'Move! Move!'

Verse 52 (devibhagavatam.6.9.52)

कामार्तः सोऽस्मृशन्मूढः पादेन मुनिमस्तकम् । अगस्तिं तापसश्रेष्ठं लोपामुद्रापतिं तदा

kāmārtaḥ so'smṛśanmūḍhaḥ pādena munimastakam | agastiṁ tāpasaśreṣṭhaṁ lopāmudrāpatiṁ tadā

Tormented by desire, that fool touched with his foot the head of a sage — Agasti, foremost of ascetics, the husband of Lopamudra —

Verse 53 (devibhagavatam.6.9.53)

वातापिभक्षकर्तारं समुद्रस्यापि शोषकम् । कशया ताडयामास पञ्चबाणशराहतः

vātāpibhakṣakartāraṁ samudrasyāpi śoṣakam | kaśayā tāḍayāmāsa pañcabāṇaśarāhataḥ

— the devourer of Vatapi, who had even dried up the ocean; struck by the arrows of the five-arrowed god of love, he struck him with a whip.

Verse 54 (devibhagavatam.6.9.54)

इन्द्राणीहृतचित्तोऽसौ सर्पेति प्रब्रुवन्मुनिम् । तं शशाप मुनिः क्रुद्धः कशाघातमनुस्मरन्

indrāṇīhṛtacitto'sau sarpeti prabruvanmunim | taṁ śaśāpa muniḥ kruddhaḥ kaśāghātamanusmaran

He, his mind stolen away by thoughts of Indrani, shouting 'Move!' at the sage; and the sage, furious, recalling the blow of that whip, pronounced a curse upon him.

Verse 55 (devibhagavatam.6.9.55)

सर्पो भव दुराचार वने घोरवपुर्महान् । बहुवर्षसहस्राणि यत्र क्लेशो महान्भवेत्

sarpo bhava durācāra vane ghoravapurmahān | bahuvarṣasahasrāṇi yatra kleśo mahānbhavet

'Become, O evil-conducted one, a monstrous, enormous serpent in the forest, where for many thousands of years great suffering shall be your lot.'

Verse 56 (devibhagavatam.6.9.56)

विचरिष्यसि वीर्येण पुनः स्वर्गमवाप्स्यसि । दृष्ट्वा युधिष्ठिरं नाम तव मोक्षो भविष्यति

vicariṣyasi vīryeṇa punaḥ svargamavāpsyasi | dṛṣṭvā yudhiṣṭhiraṁ nāma tava mokṣo bhaviṣyati

'You shall roam there by your own power; and thereafter you shall attain heaven once more. Upon beholding one named Yudhishthira, your release shall come.'

Verse 57 (devibhagavatam.6.9.57)

प्रश्नानामुत्तरं श्रुत्वा धर्मपुत्रमुखात्ततः । व्यास उवाच । एवं शप्तः स राजर्षिः स्तुत्वा तं मुनिसत्तमम्

praśnānāmuttaraṁ śrutvā dharmaputramukhāttataḥ | vyāsa uvāca | evaṁ śaptaḥ sa rājarṣiḥ stutvā taṁ munisattamam

'— upon hearing the answers to your questions from the mouth of Dharma's own son.' Vyasa said: Thus cursed, that royal sage, having praised that finest of sages —

Verse 58 (devibhagavatam.6.9.58)

स्वर्गात्पपात सहसा सर्परूपधरोऽभवत् । बृहस्पतिस्ततो गत्वा तरसा मानसं प्रति

svargātpapāta sahasā sarparūpadharo'bhavat | bṛhaspatistato gatvā tarasā mānasaṁ prati

— fell at once from heaven, and took on the form of a serpent. Brihaspati then went swiftly to Lake Manasa —

Verse 59 (devibhagavatam.6.9.59)

इन्द्राय सर्ववृत्तान्तं कथयामास विस्तरात् । तच्छ्रुत्वा मघवा राज्ञः स्वर्गात्प्रच्यवनादिकम्

indrāya sarvavṛttāntaṁ kathayāmāsa vistarāt | tacchrutvā maghavā rājñaḥ svargātpracyavanādikam

— and related to Indra the entire account in full. Hearing of the king's fall from heaven and everything that had happened, Maghavan —

Verse 60 (devibhagavatam.6.9.60)

मुदितोऽभून्महाराज स्थितस्तत्रैव वासवः । देवाश्च मुनयो दृष्ट्वा नहुषं पतितं भुवि

mudito'bhūnmahārāja sthitastatraiva vāsavaḥ | devāśca munayo dṛṣṭvā nahuṣaṁ patitaṁ bhuvi

— rejoiced there, O great king, remaining just where he was; and the gods and sages, seeing Nahusha fallen to earth —

Verse 61 (devibhagavatam.6.9.61)

जग्मुः सर्वेऽपि तत्रैव यत्रेन्द्रः सरसि स्थितः । तमाश्वास्य सुराः सर्वे मुनिभिः सहितास्तदा

jagmuḥ sarve'pi tatraiva yatrendraḥ sarasi sthitaḥ | tamāśvāsya surāḥ sarve munibhiḥ sahitāstadā

— all went there, to the very place where Indra remained in the lake; then all the gods, together with the sages, comforted him —

Verse 62 (devibhagavatam.6.9.62)

स्वर्गे समानयामासुर्मानपूर्वं शचीपतिम् । समागतं ततः शक्रं सर्वे ते मुनयः सुराः

svarge samānayāmāsurmānapūrvaṁ śacīpatim | samāgataṁ tataḥ śakraṁ sarve te munayaḥ surāḥ

— and brought Shachi's lord back to heaven with full honor. Then, with Shakra thus restored, all those sages and gods —

Verse 63 (devibhagavatam.6.9.63)

स्थापयित्वाऽऽसने पश्चादभिषेकं दधुः शिवम् । इन्द्रोऽपि स्वासनं प्राप्य शच्या सह सुरालये

sthāpayitvā''sane paścādabhiṣekaṁ dadhuḥ śivam | indro'pi svāsanaṁ prāpya śacyā saha surālaye

— established him upon his throne, and thereafter performed his auspicious anointing. Indra too, having regained his own throne, together with Shachi, in the abode of the gods —

Verse 64 (devibhagavatam.6.9.64)

चिक्रीड नन्दने रम्ये कानने प्रेमयुक्तया । व्यास उवाच । एवमिन्द्रेण सम्प्राप्तं दुःखं परमदारुणम्

cikrīḍa nandane ramye kānane premayuktayā | vyāsa uvāca | evamindreṇa samprāptaṁ duḥkhaṁ paramadāruṇam

— sported joyfully with his beloved in the delightful groves of Nandana. Vyasa said: Such, then, was the exceedingly terrible sorrow that befell Indra —

Verse 65 (devibhagavatam.6.9.65)

हत्वासुरं कामरूपं विश्वरूपं महामुनिम् । पुनर्देव्याः प्रसादेन स्वस्थानं प्राप्तवान्नृप

hatvāsuraṁ kāmarūpaṁ viśvarūpaṁ mahāmunim | punardevyāḥ prasādena svasthānaṁ prāptavānnṛpa

— from having slain that shape-shifting asura, the great sage Vishvarupa; yet again, O king, by the grace of the Goddess, he regained his own rightful place.

Verse 66 (devibhagavatam.6.9.66)

एतत्ते सर्वमाख्यातं वृत्रासुरवधाश्रयम् । यत्पृष्टोऽहं त्वया राजन् कथानकमनुत्तमम्

etatte sarvamākhyātaṁ vṛtrāsuravadhāśrayam | yatpṛṣṭo'haṁ tvayā rājan kathānakamanuttamam

'All this, O king, has now been told to you — the account of Vritrasura's slaying, this unsurpassed tale which you had asked of me.'

Verse 67 (devibhagavatam.6.9.67)

यादृशं कुरुते कर्म तादृशं फलमाप्नुयात् । अवश्यमेव भोक्तव्यं कृतं कर्म शुभाशुभम्

yādṛśaṁ kurute karma tādṛśaṁ phalamāpnuyāt | avaśyameva bhoktavyaṁ kṛtaṁ karma śubhāśubham

'Whatever deed a person performs, such is the fruit he shall reap; a deed once done, whether good or evil, must without fail be experienced.'
