Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.7.4.1)

व्यास उवाच । गते राजनि सा बाला पतिसेवापरायणा । बभूव च तथाग्नीनां सेवने धर्मतत्परा

vyāsa uvāca gate rājani sā bālā patisevāparāyaṇā babhūva ca tathāgnīnāṁ sevane dharmatatparā

Vyasa said: When the king had departed, that girl became wholly devoted to the service of her husband, and equally devoted to dharma in tending the sacred fires.

Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.7.4.2)

फलान्यादाय स्वादूनि मूलानि विविधानि च । ददौ सा मुनये बाला पतिसेवापरायणा

phalānyādāya svādūni mūlāni vividhāni ca dadau sā munaye bālā patisevāparāyaṇā

Gathering sweet fruits and various roots, that girl, devoted to her husband's service, offered them to the sage.

Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.7.4.3)

पतिं तप्तोदकेनाशु स्नापयित्वा मृगत्वचा । परिवेष्ट्य शुभायां तु बृस्यां स्थापितवत्यपि

patiṁ taptodakenāśu snāpayitvā mṛgatvacā pariveṣṭya śubhāyāṁ tu bṛsyāṁ sthāpitavatyapi

Having quickly bathed her husband with warmed water, and wrapped him in a deerskin, she seated him upon an auspicious mat of grass.

Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.7.4.4)

तिलान् यवकुशानग्रे परिकल्प्य कमण्डलुम् । तमुवाच नित्यकर्म कुरुष्व मुनिसत्तम

tilān yavakuśānagre parikalpya kamaṇḍalum tamuvāca nityakarma kuruṣva munisattama

Having arranged before him sesame, barley, kusha grass, and the water-pot, she said to him: "Perform your daily rites, O best of sages."

Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.7.4.5)

तमुत्थाप्य करे कृत्वा समाप्ते नित्यकर्मणि । बृस्यां वा संस्तरे बाला भर्तारं संन्यवेशयत्

tamutthāpya kare kṛtvā samāpte nityakarmaṇi bṛsyāṁ vā saṁstare bālā bhartāraṁ saṁnyaveśayat

When his daily rites were finished, taking his hand to raise him, that girl seated her husband again upon the mat or the bed of grass.

Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.7.4.6)

पश्चादानीय पक्वानि फलानि च नृपात्मजा । भोजयामास च्यवनं नीवारान्नं सुसंस्कृतम्

paścādānīya pakvāni phalāni ca nṛpātmajā bhojayāmāsa cyavanaṁ nīvārānnaṁ susaṁskṛtam

Afterward, the king's daughter brought ripe fruits and fed Chyavana well-prepared wild rice.

Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.7.4.7)

भुक्तवन्तं पतिं तृप्तं दत्त्वाचमनमादरात् । पश्चाच्च पूगं पत्राणि ददौ चादरसंयुता

bhuktavantaṁ patiṁ tṛptaṁ dattvācamanamādarāt paścācca pūgaṁ patrāṇi dadau cādarasaṁyutā

When her husband had eaten and was satisfied, she reverently gave him water for rinsing his mouth, and afterward, with respect, offered him betel-nut and leaves.

Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.7.4.8)

गृहीतमुखवासं तं संवेश्य च शुभासने । गृहीत्वाऽऽज्ञां शरीरस्य चकार साधनं ततः

gṛhītamukhavāsaṁ taṁ saṁveśya ca śubhāsane gṛhītvā''jñāṁ śarīrasya cakāra sādhanaṁ tataḥ

Having settled him, with his mouth freshened, upon an auspicious seat, and having taken his leave, she then attended to the needs of her own body.

Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.7.4.9)

फलाहारं स्वयं कृत्वा पुनर्गत्वा च सन्निधौ । प्रोवाच प्रणयोपेता किमाज्ञापयसे प्रभो

phalāhāraṁ svayaṁ kṛtvā punargatvā ca sannidhau provāca praṇayopetā kimājñāpayase prabho

Having eaten only fruit herself, she came again into his presence and said with affection, "What do you command, my lord?"

Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.7.4.10)

पादसंवाहनं तेऽद्य करोमि यदि मन्यसे । एवं सेवापरा नित्यं बभूव पतितत्परा

pādasaṁvāhanaṁ te'dya karomi yadi manyase evaṁ sevāparā nityaṁ babhūva patitatparā

"Shall I massage your feet today, if you wish?" Thus, ever devoted to service, she remained wholly intent on her husband.

Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.7.4.11)

सायं होमावसाने सा फलान्याहृत्य सुन्दरी । अर्पयामास मुनये स्वादूनि च मृदूनि च

sāyaṁ homāvasāne sā phalānyāhṛtya sundarī arpayāmāsa munaye svādūni ca mṛdūni ca

In the evening, when the fire-offering was ended, that beautiful woman gathered fruits, sweet and soft, and offered them to the sage.

Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.7.4.12)

ततः शेषाणि बुभुजे प्रेमयुक्ता तदाज्ञया । सुस्पर्शास्तरणं कृत्वा शाययामास तं मुदा

tataḥ śeṣāṇi bubhuje premayuktā tadājñayā susparśāstaraṇaṁ kṛtvā śāyayāmāsa taṁ mudā

Then, full of love, she ate the remainder by his leave, and, having made a soft bed, gladly laid him down to rest.

Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.7.4.13)

सुप्ते सुखं प्रिये कान्ता पदसंवाहनं तदा । चकार पृच्छती धर्मं कुलस्त्रीणां कृशोदरी

supte sukhaṁ priye kāntā padasaṁvāhanaṁ tadā cakāra pṛcchatī dharmaṁ kulastrīṇāṁ kṛśodarī

When her beloved husband lay comfortably resting, his wife, that slender-waisted one, then massaged his feet, asking him about the duties proper to women of good family.

Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.7.4.14)

पादसंवाहनं कृत्वा निशि भक्तिपरायणा । निद्रितं च मुनिं ज्ञात्वा सुष्वाप चरणान्तिके

pādasaṁvāhanaṁ kṛtvā niśi bhaktiparāyaṇā nidritaṁ ca muniṁ jñātvā suṣvāpa caraṇāntike

Having massaged his feet at night, wholly devoted, and finding the sage asleep, she too slept near his feet.

Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.7.4.15)

शुचौ प्रतिष्ठितं वीक्ष्य तालवृन्तेन भामिनी । कुर्वाणा शीतलं वायुं सिषेवे स्वपतिं तदा

śucau pratiṣṭhitaṁ vīkṣya tālavṛntena bhāminī kurvāṇā śītalaṁ vāyuṁ siṣeve svapatiṁ tadā

In summer, seeing him thus settled, that lovely woman, fanning him with a palm-leaf fan, so tended her husband, making a cool breeze for him.

Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.7.4.16)

हेमन्ते काष्ठसम्भारं कृत्वाग्निज्वलनं पुरः । स्थापयित्वा तथापृच्छत्सुखं तेऽस्तीति चासकृत्

hemante kāṣṭhasambhāraṁ kṛtvāgnijvalanaṁ puraḥ sthāpayitvā tathāpṛcchatsukhaṁ te'stīti cāsakṛt

In winter, gathering a store of firewood, she would kindle a fire before him, and repeatedly ask, "Are you comfortable?"

Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.7.4.17)

ब्राह्मे मुहूर्ते चोत्थाय जलं पात्रं च मृत्तिकाम् । समर्पयित्वा शौचार्थं समुत्थाप्य पतिं प्रिया

brāhme muhūrte cotthāya jalaṁ pātraṁ ca mṛttikām samarpayitvā śaucārthaṁ samutthāpya patiṁ priyā

Rising in the Brahma-muhurta, the pre-dawn hour, that loving wife, having raised her husband, would provide water, a vessel, and clay for his ablutions.

Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.7.4.18)

स्थानाद्दूरे च संस्थाप्य दूरं गत्वा स्थिराभवत् । कृतशौचं पतिं ज्ञात्वा गत्वा जग्राह तं पुनः

sthānāddūre ca saṁsthāpya dūraṁ gatvā sthirābhavat kṛtaśaucaṁ patiṁ jñātvā gatvā jagrāha taṁ punaḥ

Having settled him at a distance from the dwelling, she would go some way off and wait, steady; and knowing her husband had finished his ablutions, she would go and take him by the hand again.

Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.7.4.19)

आनीयाश्रममव्यग्रा चोपवेश्यासने शुभे । मृज्जलाभ्यां च प्रक्षाल्य पादावस्य यथाविधि

ānīyāśramamavyagrā copaveśyāsane śubhe mṛjjalābhyāṁ ca prakṣālya pādāvasya yathāvidhi

Bringing him back to the hermitage without agitation, and seating him on an auspicious seat, she would wash his feet with earth and water in the prescribed manner.

Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.7.4.20)

दत्त्वाऽऽचमनपात्रं तु दन्तधावनमाहरत् । समर्प्य दन्तकाष्ठं च यथोक्तं नृपनन्दिनी

dattvā''camanapātraṁ tu dantadhāvanamāharat samarpya dantakāṣṭhaṁ ca yathoktaṁ nṛpanandinī

Then, giving him the vessel for sipping water, the king's daughter would fetch the tooth-cleaning twig, and hand him the tooth-stick, exactly as prescribed.

Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.7.4.21)

चकारोष्णं जलं शुद्धं समानीतं सुपावनम् । स्नानार्थं जलमाहृत्य पप्रच्छ प्रणयान्विता

cakāroṣṇaṁ jalaṁ śuddhaṁ samānītaṁ supāvanam snānārthaṁ jalamāhṛtya papraccha praṇayānvitā

She would prepare warm, pure, well-purified water; and bringing water for his bath, she would ask him lovingly:

Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.7.4.22)

किमाज्ञापयसे ब्रह्मन् कृतं वै दन्तधावनम् । उष्णोदकं सुसम्पन्नं कुरु स्नानं समन्त्रकम्

kimājñāpayase brahman kṛtaṁ vai dantadhāvanam uṣṇodakaṁ susampannaṁ kuru snānaṁ samantrakam

"What do you command, O Brahmin? Your tooth-cleaning has been done; the warm water is fully ready — perform your bath with the sacred mantras."

Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.7.4.23)

वर्तते होमकालोऽयं सन्ध्या पूर्वा प्रवर्तते । विधिवद्धवनं कृत्वा देवतापूजनं कुरु

vartate homakālo'yaṁ sandhyā pūrvā pravartate vidhivaddhavanaṁ kṛtvā devatāpūjanaṁ kuru

"This is now the time for the fire-offering; the morning twilight-rite is beginning. Perform the oblation duly, then the worship of the gods."

Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.7.4.24)

एवं कन्या पतिं लब्ध्वा तपस्विनमनिन्दिता । नित्यं पर्यचरत्प्रीत्या तपसा नियमेन च

evaṁ kanyā patiṁ labdhvā tapasvinamaninditā nityaṁ paryacaratprītyā tapasā niyamena ca

Thus that blameless maiden, having obtained an ascetic husband, ever attended upon him with love, with austerity, and with strict observance.

Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.7.4.25)

अग्नीनामतिथीनां च शुश्रूषां कुर्वती सदा । आराधयामास मुदा च्यवनं सा शुभानना

agnīnāmatithīnāṁ ca śuśrūṣāṁ kurvatī sadā ārādhayāmāsa mudā cyavanaṁ sā śubhānanā

Ever tending the sacred fires and serving guests, that fair-faced woman gladdened Chyavana with devoted service.

Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.7.4.26)

कस्मिंश्चिदथ काले तु रविजावश्विनावुभौ । च्यवनस्याश्रमाभ्याशे क्रीडमानौ समगतौ

kasmiṁścidatha kāle tu ravijāvaśvināvubhau cyavanasyāśramābhyāśe krīḍamānau samagatau

Then at a certain time, the two sons of the Sun, both Ashvins, sporting together, came near Chyavana's hermitage.

Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.7.4.27)

जले स्नात्वा तु तां कन्यां निवृत्तां स्वाश्रमं प्रति । गच्छन्तीं चारुसर्वाङ्गीं रविपुत्रावपश्यताम्

jale snātvā tu tāṁ kanyāṁ nivṛttāṁ svāśramaṁ prati gacchantīṁ cārusarvāṅgīṁ raviputrāvapaśyatām

The two sons of the Sun saw that maiden, having bathed in the water, returning toward her own hermitage, beautiful in every limb.

Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.7.4.28)

तां दृष्ट्वा देवकन्याभां गत्वा चान्तिकमादरात् । ऊचतुः समभिद्रुत्य नासत्यावतिमोहितौ

tāṁ dṛṣṭvā devakanyābhāṁ gatvā cāntikamādarāt ūcatuḥ samabhidrutya nāsatyāvatimohitau

Seeing her, radiant as a celestial maiden, the two Nasatyas, utterly enchanted, hastened to her and, coming near with respect, spoke to her:

Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.7.4.29)

क्षणं तिष्ठ वरारोहे प्रष्टुं त्वां गजगामिनि । आवां देवसुतौ प्राप्तौ ब्रूहि सत्यं शुचिस्मिते

kṣaṇaṁ tiṣṭha varārohe praṣṭuṁ tvāṁ gajagāmini āvāṁ devasutau prāptau brūhi satyaṁ śucismite

"Wait a moment, O lovely-limbed one, O elephant-gaited one, that we may ask you something. We are the two sons of a god who have come to you — tell us the truth, O sweetly smiling one."

Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.7.4.30)

पुत्री कस्य पतिः कस्ते कथमुद्यानमागता । एकाकिनी तडागेऽस्मिन् स्नानार्थं चारुलोचने

putrī kasya patiḥ kaste kathamudyānamāgatā ekākinī taḍāge'smin snānārthaṁ cārulocane

"Whose daughter are you, who is your husband, and how have you come to this garden, alone, to this lake for bathing, O beautiful-eyed one?"

Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.7.4.31)

द्वितीया श्रीरिवाभासि कान्त्या कमललोचने । इच्छामस्तु वयं ज्ञातुं तत्त्वमाख्याहि शोभने

dvitīyā śrīrivābhāsi kāntyā kamalalocane icchāmastu vayaṁ jñātuṁ tattvamākhyāhi śobhane

"You shine like a second Lakshmi in your radiance, O lotus-eyed one. We wish to know the truth — tell it to us, O lovely one."

Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.7.4.32)

कोमलौ चरणौ कान्ते स्थितौ भूमावनावृतौ । हृदाये कुरुतः पीडां चलन्तौ चललोचने

komalau caraṇau kānte sthitau bhūmāvanāvṛtau hṛdāye kurutaḥ pīḍāṁ calantau calalocane

"Your two tender feet, standing unshod upon the ground, O lovely one — as they move, they cause pain in our hearts, O one of restless eyes."

Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.7.4.33)

विमानार्हासि तन्वङ्गि कथं पद्भ्यां व्रजस्यदः । अनावृतात्र विपिने किमर्थं गमनं तव

vimānārhāsi tanvaṅgi kathaṁ padbhyāṁ vrajasyadaḥ anāvṛtātra vipine kimarthaṁ gamanaṁ tava

"You are worthy of riding in a celestial chariot, O slender-limbed one — why then do you walk here on your feet? Why do you go about in this wilderness, unprotected?"

Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.7.4.34)

दासीशतसमायुक्ता कथं च त्वं विनिर्गता । राजपुत्र्यप्सरा वासि वद सत्यं वरानने

dāsīśatasamāyuktā kathaṁ ca tvaṁ vinirgatā rājaputryapsarā vāsi vada satyaṁ varānane

"How is it you have come out alone, though you should be attended by a hundred maidservants? Are you a princess, or an apsaras? Tell us the truth, O fair-faced one."

Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.7.4.35)

धन्या माता यतो जाता धन्योऽसौ जनकस्तव । वक्तुं त्वां नैव शक्तौ च भर्तुर्भाग्यं तवानघे

dhanyā mātā yato jātā dhanyo'sau janakastava vaktuṁ tvāṁ naiva śaktau ca bharturbhāgyaṁ tavānaghe

"Blessed indeed is the mother from whom you were born, and blessed too is your father; but we are quite unable to say, O sinless one, how great must be the fortune of him who is your husband."

Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.7.4.36)

देवलिकाधिका भूमिरियं चैव सुलोचने । प्रचलंश्चरणस्तेऽद्य सम्पावयति भूतलम्

devalikādhikā bhūmiriyaṁ caiva sulocane pracalaṁścaraṇaste'dya sampāvayati bhūtalam

"This ground, O beautiful-eyed one, has become greater than a shrine of the gods — for today the earth is sanctified by the mere passing of your foot upon it."

Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.7.4.37)

सौभाग्याश्च मृगाः कामं ये त्वां पश्यन्ति वै वने । ये चान्ये पक्षिणः सर्वे भूरियं चातिपावना

saubhāgyāśca mṛgāḥ kāmaṁ ye tvāṁ paśyanti vai vane ye cānye pakṣiṇaḥ sarve bhūriyaṁ cātipāvanā

"Truly fortunate are the deer that behold you here in the forest, and all the other birds as well; and this earth has become exceedingly sacred."

Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.7.4.38)

स्तुत्यालं तव चात्यर्थं सत्यं ब्रूहि सुलोचने । पिता कस्ते पतिः क्वासौ द्रष्टुमिच्छास्ति सादरम्

stutyālaṁ tava cātyarthaṁ satyaṁ brūhi sulocane pitā kaste patiḥ kvāsau draṣṭumicchāsti sādaram

"Enough of praising you at such length — tell us the truth, O beautiful-eyed one: who is your father, and where is your husband? We wish, with respect, to see him."

Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.7.4.39)

व्यास उवाच । तयोरिति वचः श्रुत्वा राजकन्यातिसुन्दरी । तावुवाच त्रपाक्रान्ता देवपुत्री नृपात्मजा

vyāsa uvāca tayoriti vacaḥ śrutvā rājakanyātisundarī tāvuvāca trapākrāntā devaputrī nṛpātmajā

Vyasa said: Hearing these words of theirs, that exceedingly beautiful princess, overcome with modesty, spoke to those two sons of a god:

Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.7.4.40)

शर्यातितनयां मां वां वित्तं भार्यां मुनेरिह । च्यवनस्य सतीं कान्तां पित्रा दत्तां यदृच्छया

śaryātitanayāṁ māṁ vāṁ vittaṁ bhāryāṁ muneriha cyavanasya satīṁ kāntāṁ pitrā dattāṁ yadṛcchayā

"Know me to be the daughter of Sharyati, given here by my father, of his own accord, to be the chaste and devoted wife of the sage Chyavana."

Verse 41 (devibhagavatam.7.4.41)

पतिरन्धोऽस्ति मे देवौ वृद्धश्चातीव तापसः । तस्य सेवामहोरात्रं करोमि प्रीतिमानसा

patirandho'sti me devau vṛddhaścātīva tāpasaḥ tasya sevāmahorātraṁ karomi prītimānasā

"O gods, my husband is blind, and exceedingly old, and a great ascetic; I serve him day and night with a joyful mind."

Verse 42 (devibhagavatam.7.4.42)

कौ युवां किमिहायातौ पतिस्तिष्ठति चाश्रमे । तत्रागत्य प्रकुरुतमाश्रमं चाद्य पावनम्

kau yuvāṁ kimihāyātau patistiṣṭhati cāśrame tatrāgatya prakurutamāśramaṁ cādya pāvanam

"Who are you two, and why have you come here? My husband is present in the hermitage; come there and sanctify our hermitage today."

Verse 43 (devibhagavatam.7.4.43)

तदाकर्ण्य वचो दस्रावूचतुस्तां नराधिप । कथं त्वमपि कल्याणि पिता दत्ता तपस्विने

tadākarṇya vaco dasrāvūcatustāṁ narādhipa kathaṁ tvamapi kalyāṇi pitā dattā tapasvine

Hearing these words, the two Dasras said to her, O king: "How is it, O gracious lady, that your father gave you to an ascetic —"

Verse 44 (devibhagavatam.7.4.44)

भ्राजसेऽस्मिन्वनोद्देशे विद्युत्सौदामिनी यथा । न देवेष्वपि तुल्या हि तव दृष्टास्ति भामिनि

bhrājase'sminvanoddeśe vidyutsaudāminī yathā na deveṣvapi tulyā hi tava dṛṣṭāsti bhāmini

"— you who shine in this part of the forest like a flash of lightning? Not even among the gods, O radiant one, have we seen your equal."

Verse 45 (devibhagavatam.7.4.45)

त्वं दिव्याम्बरयोग्यासि शोभसे नाजिनैर्वृता । सर्वाभरणसंयुक्ता नीलालकवरूथिनी

tvaṁ divyāmbarayogyāsi śobhase nājinairvṛtā sarvābharaṇasaṁyuktā nīlālakavarūthinī

"You are fit for celestial garments; you do not shine, clad as you are in deerskin — you, whose place is amid every ornament, whose dark curling locks are so lovely."

Verse 46 (devibhagavatam.7.4.46)

अहो विधेर्दुष्कलितं विचेष्टितं यदत्र रम्भोरु वने विषीदसि । विशालनेत्रेऽन्धमिमं पतिं प्रिये मुनिं समासाद्य जरातुरं भृशम्

aho vidherduṣkalitaṁ viceṣṭitaṁ yadatra rambhoru vane viṣīdasi viśālanetre'ndhamimaṁ patiṁ priye muniṁ samāsādya jarāturaṁ bhṛśam

"Ah, how ill-fated is the working of destiny, that here in this forest you should languish, O banana-thighed one — having obtained, O wide-eyed beloved, this blind sage as husband, so gravely afflicted by old age!"

Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.7.4.47)

वृथा व्रतस्तेन भृशं न शोभसे नवं वयः प्राप्य सुनृत्यपण्डिते । मनोभवेनाशु शराः सुसन्धिताः पतन्ति कस्मिन्पतिरीदृशस्तव

vṛthā vratastena bhṛśaṁ na śobhase navaṁ vayaḥ prāpya sunṛtyapaṇḍite manobhavenāśu śarāḥ susandhitāḥ patanti kasminpatirīdṛśastava

"Your vow is in vain, for you do not shine at all, though you have reached the freshness of youth, O one skilled in graceful dance. On whom shall the well-aimed arrows of the love-god fall swiftly, when your husband is such as this?"

Verse 48 (devibhagavatam.7.4.48)

त्वमन्धभार्या नवयौवनान्विता कृतासि धात्रा ननु मन्दबुद्धिना । न चैनमर्हस्यसितायतेक्षणे पतिं त्वमन्यं कुरु चारुलोचने

tvamandhabhāryā navayauvanānvitā kṛtāsi dhātrā nanu mandabuddhinā na cainamarhasyasitāyatekṣaṇe patiṁ tvamanyaṁ kuru cārulocane

"You, endowed with fresh youth, have been made the wife of a blind man — surely by a dull-witted Creator! O dark, long-eyed one, you do not deserve him — take another husband, O beautiful-eyed one."

Verse 49 (devibhagavatam.7.4.49)

वृथैव ते जीवितमम्बुजेक्षणे पतिं च सम्प्राप्य मुनिं गतेक्षणम् । वने निवासं च तथाजिनाम्बर- प्रधारणं योग्यतरं न मन्महे

vṛthaiva te jīvitamambujekṣaṇe patiṁ ca samprāpya muniṁ gatekṣaṇam vane nivāsaṁ ca tathājināmbara- pradhāraṇaṁ yogyataraṁ na manmahe

"Your life is spent in vain, O lotus-eyed one, having obtained as husband a sage who has lost his sight; nor do we think it fitting that you should dwell in the forest, wearing garments of deerskin."

Verse 50 (devibhagavatam.7.4.50)

अतोऽनवद्याङ्ग्युभयोस्त्वमेकं वरं कुरुषावहिता सुलोचने । किं यौवनं मानिनि सङ्करोषि वृथा मुनिं सुन्दरि सेवमाना

ato'navadyāṅgyubhayostvamekaṁ varaṁ kuruṣāvahitā sulocane kiṁ yauvanaṁ mānini saṅkaroṣi vṛthā muniṁ sundari sevamānā

"Therefore, O flawless-limbed one, choose one of us two as husband, considering carefully, O beautiful-eyed one. Why, O proud one, do you squander your youth thus, serving a sage in vain, O beautiful one?"

Verse 51 (devibhagavatam.7.4.51)

किं सेवसे भाग्यविवर्जितं तं समुज्झितं पोषणरक्षणाभ्याम् । त्यक्त्वा मुनिं सर्वसुखापवर्जितं भजानवद्याङ्ग्युभयोस्त्वमेकम्

kiṁ sevase bhāgyavivarjitaṁ taṁ samujjhitaṁ poṣaṇarakṣaṇābhyām tyaktvā muniṁ sarvasukhāpavarjitaṁ bhajānavadyāṅgyubhayostvamekam

"Why do you serve one so bereft of fortune, one incapable even of providing sustenance and protection? Leave that sage, deprived of all happiness, and take one of us two, O flawless-limbed one."

Verse 52 (devibhagavatam.7.4.52)

त्वं नन्दने चैत्ररथे वने च कुरुष्व कान्ते प्रथितं विहारम् । अन्धेन वृद्धेन कथं हि कालं विनेष्यसे मानिनि मानहीनम्

tvaṁ nandane caitrarathe vane ca kuruṣva kānte prathitaṁ vihāram andhena vṛddhena kathaṁ hi kālaṁ vineṣyase mānini mānahīnam

"In the Nandana or the Chaitraratha groves, O beloved, take your celebrated pleasure; how indeed, O proud one, will you pass your time, stripped of all honor, with a blind old man?"

Verse 53 (devibhagavatam.7.4.53)

भूपात्मजा त्वं शुभलक्षणा च जानासि संसारविहारभावम् । भाग्येन हीना विजने वनेऽत्र कालं कथं वाहयसे वृथा च

bhūpātmajā tvaṁ śubhalakṣaṇā ca jānāsi saṁsāravihārabhāvam bhāgyena hīnā vijane vane'tra kālaṁ kathaṁ vāhayase vṛthā ca

"You are a king's daughter, of auspicious marks, and understand the pleasures proper to worldly life — bereft of good fortune, why do you spend your time here in vain, in this lonely forest?"

Verse 54 (devibhagavatam.7.4.54)

तस्माद्भजस्व पिकभाषिणि चारुवक्त्रे एवं द्वयोस्तव सुखाय विशालनेत्रे । देवालयुषे च कृशोदरि भुङ्क्ष्व भोगान् त्यक्त्वा मुनिं जरठमाशु नृपेन्द्रपुत्रि

tasmādbhajasva pikabhāṣiṇi cāruvaktre evaṁ dvayostava sukhāya viśālanetre devālayuṣe ca kṛśodari bhuṅkṣva bhogān tyaktvā muniṁ jaraṭhamāśu nṛpendraputri

"Therefore, O sweet-voiced, lovely-faced one, choose one of us two for your happiness, O wide-eyed one; take one who lives as long as the gods, O slender-waisted one, and enjoy pleasures, quickly abandoning that decrepit sage, O daughter of the lord of kings."

Verse 55 (devibhagavatam.7.4.55)

किं ते सुखं चात्र वने सुकेशि वृद्धेन सार्धं विजने मृगाक्षि । सेवा तथान्धस्य नवं वयश्च किं ते मतं भूपतिपुत्रि दुःखम्

kiṁ te sukhaṁ cātra vane sukeśi vṛddhena sārdhaṁ vijane mṛgākṣi sevā tathāndhasya navaṁ vayaśca kiṁ te mataṁ bhūpatiputri duḥkham

"What happiness can you find here in this forest, O lovely-haired one, in solitude with an old man, O doe-eyed one? What of the service of a blind man, and your own fresh youth — do you not think this a sorrow, O king's daughter?"

Verse 56 (devibhagavatam.7.4.56)

शशिमुखि त्वमतीव सुकोमला फलजलाहरणं तव नोचितम्

śaśimukhi tvamatīva sukomalā phalajalāharaṇaṁ tava nocitam

"O moon-faced one, you are exceedingly delicate; the fetching of fruit and water is not fitting work for you."
